Flipping over to the defensive side of football after looking at standouts from Arizona State Sun Devils football's spring practice sessions, we find ourselves with more than a handful of guys to highlight. Every level of defense had young and green players to savvy veterans who made an impact and were impossible to overlook. Perhaps the biggest of all these guys was senior pass rusher Elijah O'Neil, who has an opening before him to become a full-time starter. O'Neil has showcased significant growth entering his (likely) final season with the Sun Devils and a strong training camp will surely earn him some significant playing time. Some of his partners in crime, including Clayton Smith, C.J. Fite, Jacob Kongaika, and Jeff Clark also stood out along the defensive line. The linebacker room had plenty of playmakers, but redshirt freshman K'Vion Thunderbird caught our eye the most. In the secondary, it was impossible to narrow it down to just two or three standouts, but both  redshirt and non-redshirt freshmen like Keontez Bradley, Montana Warren, Tony Lewis-Nkuba, and Rodney Bimage made their presences felt alongside veterans like Xavion Alford and LT Welch. Arizona State Sun Devils football rolled out a more than-quality defense in 2023. Despite the deceptive points per game, the unit dialed up pressure thanks to a new philosophy under defensive coordinator Bria Ward. Several players emerged as stud players for the Sun Devils including B.J. Green, Dashaun Mallory, and Tre Brown, however, all three of them are no longer with the program for various reasons. Now looking ahead to 2024, the Sun Devils have a need for new veterans, but thankfully they have some key returners who will make the process a bit easier. As we turn our attention to the defensive side of the football where Arizona State Sun Devils football was a pleasant surprise in 2023. As we turn our attention to the defensive side of the football where Arizona State Sun Devils football was a pleasant surprise in 2023. Defensive coordinator Brian Ward had his players playing every down at a high level and has us thinking the best is yet to come. Although there have been some key departures from the program, the unit has a slew of guys returning who could make major contributions in 2024. The duo of edge rushers Prince Dorbah and Clayton Smith could yield a remarkable pass rush for the Sun Devils after the two combined for 10.5 sacks a season ago. They'll be aided by defensive tackle C.J. Fite, who was one of the most productive freshmen for Arizona State a year ago. The secondary will have some key returners as well, such as Shamari Simmons at safety and Ed Woods at cornerback. Between these five and some other returners, the Sun Devils' defense can hopefully match what they did last season. This is the 13th year of the Speak of the Devils podcast, and the sixth year of the Sitdown Series. Over that span, I've done over 1,000 interviews, and this is the first one in which the subject's snake got loose mid-interview. But that snake breaking contain was about the only thing eluding Clayton Smith's grasp, albeit briefly, during his time in Tempe. A former 5-star recruit, Smith spent his first two years at Oklahoma before transferring to Arizona State. Brief resolved unexplained what?? MCHD paramedic, Cpt. Clayton Smith, joins Dr. Dickson to discuss an EMS approach to BRUE's.
