As someone whose business was rooted in a physical presence, Jo comes to us with a unique perspective on just how expansive an online presence can be for any business.Starting with the transition itself, we dive into the lessons that Jo learned while embracing visibility, especially when what started out as a TikTok experiment led to her going viral. Tune in for some amazing insights on how to build and maintain your confidence and sense of self when showing up online!QUOTES:" These are not personality traits. They are skills that I can learn or unlearn. And where I focus my energy is where it's going to grow." "Let me tell myself a better story about Instagram. Let me tell myself that I can learn this, that there's a formula, and that it's not happening to me, I'm happening to it. If both of those stories aren't true, then pick the one that's gonna feel better in your head."" The hardest bit is climbing up cringe mountain. But once you're on the other side of cringe mountain, it doesn't matter which cringe mountain you've climbed. My second guest in the ‘You're Guide to Making it Happen in 2025' series is the wonderful Samantha Hearne! I was blown away by my conversation with Samantha – the fearlessness and tenacity that she brings to her business and coaching is absolutely infectious.Samantha and I talk through her own business journey from her start as a teacher to building a business that sustained her both energetically and financially. We dive deep into how she created her foundational approach that success is inevitable, and ways that you can adapt a similar belief within your own mindset.Tune on for a massive permission slip to believe in your goals with all of you, and then make them work on your own terms. You can find more about Samantha at https://www.samanthahearnecoaching.com/QUOTES“Some of us are more doers. Some of us are more fly by the seat of our pants. If you do have a more questioning mentality of ‘how do I do this? Is this possible?', that doesn't mean that you're doubting yourself. It's just your thought process.”“ Such a big part of being online and having an online business is that you are creating a level of exposure and vulnerability that a corporate job or employment doesn't have. Essentially what you're doing is saying, ‘here's what I want to say. Do you agree with me?”“ Who you are is so much more than a number. Welcome to a very special Real You Real Money episode series! To kick off 2025, I wanted to gift you a handful of episodes to combat the negative chatter that can run wild in the online space. Those voices that say things like ‘nothing worked in 2024, the algorithm is against you, the game has changed and left you behind'. Sound familiar? All of those generalisations can make you feel like giving up and keep you from reaching for your goals… and while people say these things like they're universal truths, the secret is that they are absolutely NOT!During this series, I've invited 5 different guests who absolutely smashed it in 2024 to talk through how they did it. We dive deep into their unique stories and break down how they shifted away from those beliefs and toward a business that worked for them.In the first episode of the series, I welcome the brilliant Colette McBeth to the podcast. Colette shares her journey from being a Television Correspondent for the BBC to a prolific author and coach who helps business owners use storytelling not just within their marketing, but throughout every aspect of their work. The usefulness of storytelling doesn't end with how you speak to your audience; Colette shares how the stories we tell ourselves can have a huge impact on how we set goals and define our self-worth. Tune in for tips on how to connect deeply with your audience AND your own desires! You can find out more about Colette at https://colettemcbeth.com/If you loved this episode, https://www.raydodd.co.uk/price-without-apologyMentioned in this episode: Ready to stop apologising for your prices and start 2025 with real confidence? My guest today is the wonderful Josh Peck! This is the first time I've had the chance to chat with Josh, a midlife career change coach who helps mid to senior level professionals find more fulfilment in their careers without sacrificing salary.Josh and I dive deep into why so many people seek career changes in their 40s, plus what that process looks like practically, the challenges of finding a new balance, and the fulfilment that waits on the other side. We break down common pitfalls, like the pressure to stick to an 8 hour workday, how to avoid becoming your own toxic boss, and challenging the idea that a career change means starting completely from scratch (hint: it doesn't!).Tune in for insights on how to balance what you want in life with what you want from your career, and of course the money side of it all.Be sure to learn more about Josh at:https://yourbestlifeuk.comAnd on Instagram @yourbestlifeukQUOTE“If you want a career change, it's because your job's here and you're way over there and there's this gulf between them. If you want to realign who you are with what you do, you've got to be really bloody clear about who you are at this point in your life. Because we change so much and no one teaches us stuff, most just aren't that clear unless you've done a fair amount of work on who you are.”“Money's not bad, its neutral. What you choose to do with it is what YOU choose to do.”“What we learn when we're really small is that all of our worth and our value comes from doing rather than just being. Is it any wonder that we get absolutely addicted to working, working, working? If we're not working, then what value do we think that we have?
Feeling stuck with your sales but can't put your finger on why? There is one specific block that comes up with most of my clients when this happens… and the tricky part is that most people can't see it in themselves! In this episode, I'm revealing the secret spiral that so many business owners get into, where you doubt yourself because you're not making sales, then stop selling because you doubt yourself. It's a circle that feeds itself and keeps you from showing up and sharing your work passionately.Tune in for insight on how to notice when you're avoiding selling, and most importantly discover the reasons why in order to stop the spiral! If you're looking for some help to make more sales without the ick, my self-paced course Sell That Thing is now open. And I have a very exciting bonus for this round. Join before 31st Oct and you will be able to join my live 5 day 'Sell That Black Friday Thing' bonus. This means you will be able to plan/create an offer to sell on Black Friday (or small business Saturday if that's more your bag!). This bonus is a great way to get learn how to put offers out quickly and sell them with joy! Plus it means you'll get a whole heap of coaching from me within the group! Check out all of the details here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/sell-that-thingQUOTES“People conditioned as women are told to stay small, be nice, be polite, be kind at all costs, be gentle, be humble. Do any of those sound like what we're told selling is like? Selling takes up space. Selling says what I offer is good. Selling repeats itself over and over again.”“Can you imagine a man going, “I just think my communication style is too direct”, and trying to make it more flowery, more gentle, and more approachable? Women who are more direct are shamed, but equally the wiggly non-linear people are criticized because their style of communication is meandering. It is harder for women to show up on repeat because we have less trust in our own communication styles.”
There's a lot of talk around mindset at the beginning of your business – why wouldn't there be, it's easier to recognise! When you're just starting out, you're much more likely to come face to face with your money conditioning at every turn, from the way you think about setting your prices all the way to the scarcity that may get in the way of you starting in the first place. After you've been doing this for a little while, that mindset talk can get fewer and farther between. You feel familiar with all of the tricks your brain is trying to play, and you may even have a few tricks of your own to combat them! Which leaves you wondering… what's still standing in the way?It probably comes as no surprise that your mindset work isn't over just because you've been running a business for a long time. In fact, this could be the most challenging stage of working on your money mindset because your conditioning shows up in really subtle ways.Tune in for insight on where money blocks can sneak their way into your subconscious even if you know what to look for, and what you can do about it!If you'd like to join a group of likeminded business owners as we make a plan to embody your next money making level, be sure to grab one of the last few spaces left in my retreat on 16th October! You can find all the information here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/retreat-daysQUOTES“We're always slagging money off to somebody: “There's not enough of it. It's hard to come by. People spend too much of it. There's not enough for us but there's too much for everybody else.” And so your subconscious brain just goes, ‘cool, sounds like we shouldn't have much of that.”“What I notice is that two things happen as people progress in this work: they start to ignore mindset because they ‘did the big stuff'. They swept their desk of the mess, but what they didn't notice was that actually, their desk had woodworm in it. That was making the desk weaker. But they didn't see that because they didn't pay a lot of attention to the nooks and crannies.”
Get ready for an episode that's a little meta, where I interview my own coach Amanda Ranae! I love working with Amanda because we have so many things in common when it comes to our coaching philosophy. Most of all, we both believe that you don't need to be anything different to be successful— your magic lies in growing more and more into who YOU are! Tune in for a conversation on embracing both your strengths and weakness, resisting the urge to follow advice that doesn't work for you, and creating the type of business that functions based on your own needs, energy and desires. You can find out more about Amanda at Biglovewildmagic.com Or in Instagram @amanda_ranae QUOTES “What happens when we start to approach ourselves more like a plant. If the plant is struggling we're never like, “what is wrong with you?!” We always look at: what's wrong with your environment? What's wrong with the nutrients that you're getting? That feeling that you're talking about that we love so much about growth is there's nothing wrong with us.” “Do things that you love, build up what you're great at, and accept all the parts of you. I love saying it's just as important to own who you're not as it is to own who you are, because when we own who we're not, it connects us deeply with the fact that we're not supposed to be everything.” “It really takes audacity within ourselves to own our appetite— to have an appetite, whether it's food, for money, for love, for sex, as someone who was conditioned as a woman or currently expresses and still identifies as a woman. It takes so much radical reclamation because one of the strongest messages is shrink down.”
I want to start with a quick content warning: today we're talking about grief, specifically the death of a parent. If this is a vulnerable topic for you, this might be an episode to skip or listen to with care. I've been feeling the pull to record an episode on grieving while running your business for a while now, mainly because this has been so prominent in my own business, and I haven't found much content that speaks to it. This isn't going to be an episode where I teach you how to smash your business goals despite your grief – in my experience, that's just not how it works. For me, making space to care for myself while grieving is the main thing that has allowed me to balance the work that that I love, which sustains me and my family, with the very personal processes and emotions around losing a loved one. Listen in for a nuanced conversation on what it's like to find balance in times of loss, and the unavoidably practical side of trying to slow down in a world that keeps moving. If you have experience with anything discussed in this episode, I'm sending lots of love your way. QUOTES "Sometimes things do fall out of the sky when we weren't expecting it. And that's really scary. But rather than working on all the ways you'll manage it, try to work on looking at the things you can control. One of the main things you can control is believing that you will cope." "This doesn't have to be the year you smash it. What if this is the year that you coast? What if this is the year where you get by and it's okay? If I'd been honest about that in the moment, I actually think I'd have made more money ironically, because I think I'd have made a plan for a coasting me, not a smashing it me."
Get ready, cause this one's a deep dive! Doctor Asher Larmie joins me in this episode of Real You Real Money to talk through the intricacies of gender identity, gender conditioning, and what it all means not only when you're navigating your business, but the world. Asher is a transmasculine doctor now working independently with clients to combat weight stigma and promote weight-inclusive care. Together, we dive into the complicated nuances between the very personal side of gender identity, and how it relates to the larger social conditioning and often arbitrary expectations we place on people based on the gender they're born into. Bringing both of our experiences to the table, this conversation is mainly about what it means to be socially conditioned as female. You can find out more about Asher at https://www.fatdoctor.co.uk/
This week I'm welcoming Joeli Caparco to the podcast! Joeli is a brilliant coach who helps people reconnect with their needs, wants, and desires so that they can have happier, healthier relationships. Together we unpack the complexities of how money-making plays into, and sometimes determines the dynamics of our marriages and relationships. Fair warning, it's a maze of conditioning, a healthy dose of grey area, and a whole lot of self (re)discovery! Stay tuned as Joeli shares her own story of a dysfunctional money dynamic within her previous marriage, and how she created a new family balance that made room for the work that she's passionate about and the moneymaking possibilities that come with it. You can find out more about Joeli's work at queercyclecoach.com @joelicaparco
If you're up to date with coaching industry trends, you may have noticed a big uptick in ‘do it my way' marketing - people selling the one solution that will skyrocket your business to success. If you're a long time listener, you may have already guessed that I'm NOT a fan of one size fits all solutions. In this episode, I'm diving into the mentality that leads people to lean on step by step techniques, how these methods are rooted in scarcity, and the mindset alternatives that will provide much more longevity and ease to your money making. Tune in for tips on how to gain a deeper understanding of your business beliefs and where they come from, plus how to use these to be a discerning consumer of advice and coaching. QUOTES "My very first discovery of Mindset was mindblowing to me, this concept that I had control over my brain, that I didn't just have to accept these thoughts and beliefs that didn't feel like they fit me. I got to choose my beliefs about myself rather than just feeling like I was a victim to them." "There's a need for control, a need for steadiness - because we don't have it, we're trying to create it. What we really need for that stability is to find it internally, and mindset work is part of a way that we can do that." "Group coaching is an amazing thing when it comes to money because one of the biggest things holding us back from feeling good about money is shame. One of the key ways that we remove shame is by sharing in groups, by understanding that we're not alone."
I'm thrilled to welcome Nicola to the podcast! As a Coach, Coach Trainer, Certified Coach Supervisor, and experienced Creative Strategist, Nicola takes a strategic yet heart-centered approach, creating holistic solutions by examining the bigger picture and understanding how the various systems of our society intersect. In this episode, Nicola shares how her experiences have shaped her approach to ambition, both within and outside of money-making. Tune in for valuable advice on taking a holistic approach to ambition, its impact on everything from sales to daily life, and what it means to balance the personal, professional, and beyond. You can find Nicola at: https://www.alifemoreinspired.com/ Or on Instagram @nicolaraewickham QUOTES ‘I think in line with looking at ambition is looking at our definitions of success. For me, a definition of success is being able to do the school runs. That is very personal and that's a definition of success, as well as income goals being a definition of success, as well as being able to go on adventures. Whatever it is, there are these bigger ones and these smaller ones.” “What has worked before isn't going to work going forward “I have learned that I can really trust my business and I can really trust my work. I can trust myself. Life can be happening and things can be going on and with the right support, you can still show up and deliver.”
My guest today is Claire Paniccia, a brilliant business coach helping neurodivergent, spoonie, and creative rebel online entrepreneurs figure out how to do business (and make money) in ways that work for THEM. Claire and I walk through the unique layout of moneymaking when you're neurodiverse, from the limits of corporate life to finding your footing in self-employment and everything in between. Tune in for insight on how running your own business can expand your earning potential, how to get your business to work for you, plus some really helpful tips on how to balance fluctuating energy levels with income consistency. On Jul 22nd - Jul 25th, Claire is hosting a free 4-day online event to help you toss out the “rules” and build your online business to work for YOUR unique brain. https://neurodiverseentrepreneursummit.com/ (I was a speaker last year and can promise that this is one not to miss!) QUOTES “What was a successful, functional, proven path for someone else might not be a successful path for you. Let's say they had really good hiking shoes, and you have flip flops for the brain. Your flip flop brain is not going to do well on the hiking path that they used cleats on.” “I love an unregulated industry because there's so much opportunity without gatekeeping. But a flip side of that coin is that there are gross opportunists. It's kind of baby with the bathwater.”
Today we're debunking the myth that there are certain times of the year that you just can't make money. So many of my clients stress about quiet summer months— lots of people even think it's a given that they won't make any sales in August. I want you to know that's just not true. Tune in for a breakdown of the reason that you have such low expectations for summer sales, and how to challenge this in a way that could turn August into your best month of the year. Interested in a free masterclass to boost your sales? Sign up for three simple steps here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/masterclass QUOTES “Think about what your clients want and stay out of their pockets and their diaries and their holiday plans and their rest plans and how much time they should spend with their kids.” “Don't be afraid to gamify it. In fact, do it. Money doesn't need to be treated so heavily and seriously all the time. In fact, it loves not to be. So how can you make it lighter?”
Today we're joined by brilliant photographer and business owner Éadaoin Curtin! Éadaoin's specialises in branding photography with her business Firechild Photography, and has a fresh and encouraging perspective on how to put your face to your brand. Her approach is backed by years of connecting with entrepreneurs and bringing the most authentic reflection of themselves to the surface. Tune in for talk on the pressures of being visible— literally — the revelations that happen when you are free of the male gaze, and the conditioning we challenge whenever we have our photo taken. You can find out more about Éadaoin at: https://firechildphotography.com/ @ firechildphotography And if you're catching this episode on 6 June, you're JUST in time to sign up to Plenty! You can find all the info here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty QUOTES “None of my clients are getting the photos taken because they want to promote how they look. It's because they want to promote how they work, what they do, how they can help you. The body that they are in is important…and irrelevant.” “In being the real you, people will be attracted to you. If you're actively trying to blend in with all the other coaches, you just become one of a crowd. That's the countercultural aspect of showing up in front of the camera as yourself.”
The brilliant Asher Larmie joins me today to talk about combatting scarcity, prioritising accessibility, and learning to embrace making the money you desire. Asher is an educator and advocate combatting weight stigma and promoting weight-inclusive care. They offer courses, books and masterclasses that empower you on your health journey without all the toxic weight loss nonsense. Asher is part of my money program Plenty, and has had huge success in doubling their income within the space of 6 months. We walk through that journey together, starting with how to challenge money stories carried through generations, facing the unique finances of being self-employed, and embracing a sense of community to lead you through it all. This episode is for you if you're interested in how to challenge your conditioning around money… and so is Plenty! Doors are now open to join, with full information on the program and community and a link to sign up right here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty. 'It costs that much cause it takes me f***ing hours…' If you sang this lyric in your head then you've probably heard of Laura Jane Barnes, who joins us in today's episode! Of course, Laura Jane is more than just a viral song maker (which we'll get into in the pod). She is a business strategist who helps artists and handmade business owners turn their social media efforts into an engaged and loyal online following. Tune in as Laura and I talk through why visibility as a small business owner is more essential than you think, how to establish trust with your following, and why the algorithm isn't your enemy. For more about Laura Jane, go to: https://www.laurajanebarnes.com/ Or follow @heyitslaurajane And if you're interested in making your own impact online, join the waitlist for Plenty right here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty QUOTE 'When it comes to like artists and hand makers and stuff like that, I see a lot of “I don't want to be a content creator. I don't want to be a personal brand' … Well, you don't have to be, but your journey is going to be more difficult. Because the reason that someone buys from a small business owner over a huge company is that personal connection.' 'I think the other thing with showing up is that people assume that in order to be visible that you have to give up your privacy, and I don't think that's the case. It's not about letting strangers in, it's about letting yourself out.' 'This is the main piece with engagement that so many people are missing: you need to give people an opportunity to share themselves, their values, their opinions, their experiences, their preferences, because people want to talk about themselves…. Then you'll find that people actually start building friendships within your comment section.'
If you're running an independent business, it is almost impossible to avoid thinking about the current economy and how it's effecting sales. I've seen so many people preparing for the worst, closing down their small businesses, or simply adjusting to the change in the market while looking back at the ‘e-commerce pandemic boom' as a thing of the past. It's a lot to take in. And the good news is, you do have control over a lot of how you move forward. That's why today, I'm breaking down the misconceptions and misunderstandings about how something like a recession, a cost of living crisis, or an economic downturn can impact our businesses, and what we can do about it. QUOTES “There has never been more ways to make this work, even though what we're being told is that there's never been less ways.” “If somebody chooses to work with you, you have to trust them. It's not your business to decide who should or shouldn't be working with you or how people should or shouldn't spend their money.” “People do get more discerning when there is this general scarcity in the air. It's a bit chicken and egg.”
I'm returning after a little hiatus, and with me is the brilliant Lauren Currie! Lauren is the Founder of UPFRONT, and is on a mission to change confidence for 1 million women. An all-around powerhouse, Lauren has been awarded an OBE for her services to design and diversity. Together we look at visibility from all angles, especially the ones that are trickier to navigate. From the positives of learning to own your work and show up as yourself, to the less explored complexity of privacy, safety, and pressure, we break down what it really means for people from all walks of life to show up online. Ever notice how visibility is an ‘obligation' that seems to fall on female business owners? Then this episode is for you… You can find out more about Lauren here: https://laurencurrie.co/ https://www.weareupfront.com/ QUOTES “You can be private and authentic at the same time.” “I think with female founders, the world wants to know everything about you. It's like: I'm going to decide if I'm your customer or not based on where you live, who you're in a relationship with, how you parent. I think it's risky and we're only just starting to scratch the surface of what the consequences are for the women in these positions.” “When you end up with a life that's so different to the life that you came from, how do you keep progressing?” “Why do I need to be camera ready every day when I'm trying to actually build a business? I look at male founders in the same position as me and they are not doing that.”
Today I'm taking a look back at the journey from the start of my business to where I am today. I'm currently revamping my own messaging and funnels, which has turned out to be a great chance to reflect on all of the experiences, inspirations, and even pitfalls that that are at the heart of my offers. Listen in to hear about how and why I started my business, the circumstances that led me to the self-trust I needed to jump in with both feet, and how you can do the same no matter where you're at. If you caught the shoutout at the beginning of the episode, the undeniably brilliant Tamu Thomas just released her first book ‘Women Who Work Too Much'. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Women-Who-Work-Too-Much/dp/1837820740 And if you're interested in the upcoming round of Plenty, be sure to get on the waitlist: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty QUOTES “I realised how much easier it was for me to make money when I decided to trust myself. When I decided to do things in ways that felt good to me, that is when it worked. “I don't care what people think of me being visible. I need to feed my family. That was a far more pressing concern than: what does so and so think of me being visible? Am I annoying these people?” “I don't want you to have to hit a rock bottom experience in order to be able to act on your zones of genius or your deep desires. That was my story, but it doesn't need to be your story”
I've had a breakthrough around how I manage my days, and ultimately how I manage my business... so of course I wanted to share it with you! There is so much focus on starting out in your business, but what happens once the excitement, the adrenaline, and even a little bit of fear has worn off? In a counterproductive way, I realised that I started replicating the very corporate structures that I started a business to get away from - things like equating being at my desk to productivity. These habits felt safe as they are familiar, but they certainly weren't productive or healthy. Tune in for advice on how to break out and run your business and time in a way that works for you. QUOTES “We talk a lot about starting up, but we don't really talk about the ebbs and flows of running a business for a long time.” “I was trying to replicate the working habits of being in an office…when part of the point of having my own business is not working within a system that doesn't work for me!" "I've found new ways of splitting my day up so I get more done, and don't feel obligated to be tied to my desk...I am so much happier because I don't feel like I'm having to sacrifice one part of my life for the other.”
Today, we're chatting about safety, familiarity, trust, and how all of these things come together to build the foundation of your business. Running your own business means that you are likely reinventing typical structures, whether it's in your sales, your offers, or even your day to day. You are at the centre of it all, and while that is super freeing in theory, it can be a challenge in times of doubt. When we have to make big decisions or take risks, our brain's instinct is to search for safety in the familiar. So what happens when we enter the uncharted territory of our new, play-by-our-own-rules business? Tune in for a discussion on how to avoid outsourcing your trust, and making decisions based on what you know instead of what you fear. Interested in joining Plenty? Get on the waitlist here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty QUOTES “We are so worried about drowning – about it all going wrong – that we are like squirming with our legs, working frantically to stop drowning, when actually we can just put our feet on the floor.” “The role of your subconscious is to make sure that you are safe. So it is asking without you consciously being aware of it in every situation: is this familiar? If it's familiar, I'll read it as safe.” “I have to look at what is true, what I know, what I can touch. Not what I fear is true.”
Today we're talking about how the people around you impact the kind of money you can make. From the influences you absorbed growing up, to clients' opinions on affordability, to the type of businesses you aspire toward, it seems like you can't turn a corner without someone else's money beliefs jumping out to inform or challenge your own. So how do we surround ourselves with money beliefs that will build us up and help us make the money we desire? Tune in for insight on the importance of a supportive money community, plus more on the unique inherited challenges that those of us historically left out of moneymaking face. QUOTES “I do think making money is harder for people who've traditionally been left out of money making. Imagine the people not in the cigar room drinking the brandy. The mental gymnastics that we have to do, the unravelling of the conditioning is broader and louder.” “One of the reasons communities are so impactful is we share power. We share power in communities. We share information, we share mistakes and failures. We share wins, we share wobbles, “Making more money is vulnerable. It's so vulnerable. And you do not need to hold that alone.”
In this episode, I'm breaking down why your money mindset is directly linked to your sales. You may not realise it when you're writing that sales email or editing that reel, but how you show up and sell in your business is directly related to how you feel about money, your potential to make it, and the role it plays in your life… not to mention in the world. Tune in for insights on how improving your money mindset can help you meet your sales goals, plus lots more on taking up space and giving ourselves permission to sell. And remember, Sell That Thing starts on February 12! Here's the link with all the info: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/sell-that-thing QUOTES “My view on selling is that you are inviting people into your world, and yes there's an exchange of money in there, but the exchange of money is not the thing.” “You're also gonna want to figure out how to sell without compromising who you are so that the whole of you gets to show up in selling. When you do that, you are going to attract the best fit people for you.” “We often conflate selling and unkindness. People feel like the more they go out and sell, somehow they're adding more bad to the world... You are adding good to the world, really falling in love with what you do in terms of making the world a better place.”
In this episode, I'm jumping into some sticky money territory… even for this podcast! I work with so many clients that are incredibly conscious of the ethics of their money making. If you're a listener, it's likely that you fall into this category of beautifully big-hearted business owners! While there's obviously so many good things about striving for an ethical business, there are moments where your conditioning around money can masquerade as kindness and keep you from entering that big moneymaking space that you long to fill. Tune in for the sideways lessons we can learn from ‘unethical money makers', and how we can embrace the many definitions of an asset that don't have to do with ownership. QUOTES “Sometimes I think our worry, our moralizing, our over commitment to what's ethical and what's not ethical is holding us back in ways it does not need to.” “We need to put a little more thought in than ‘this feels not right'. We need to think more critically than that. Sometimes the ick is legit, and sometimes the ick is social conditioning in disguise, and it's keeping us broke.” “The way that we've been conditioned is to believe that what money touches becomes bad or unkind is super interesting, because if we were just talking about community and we weren't thinking about what that community paying us, we wouldn't have these same thoughts. When we introduce selling (to a community), our footing becomes unstable and we don't really know what's okay anymore.”
The idea of selling is one of the most common points of anxiety for coaches and independent business owners – who do we approach? How do we share our offers? How hard do we push? How do we deal with rejection? With a maybe? Sales consultant Leah Gregory joins me to hash out these questions and more. We talk through those moments where sales get sticky, and the steps we can take to make selling less pressured and more about connection. Leah works with 6 & 7 figure coaches to sell high ticket offers, lead and train their sales teams, and help them make more sales and help more people. You can find out more about Leah on IG at @iamleah.co.uk Interested in joining me for a whole course on getting comfortable with selling? Read all about Sell That Thing here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/sell-that-thing QUOTES “People write themselves off or they discount themselves from ever being the kind of person that can sell because they're like identity currently feels so far away from that… (instead) I believe we've unlearned the ability to sell ourselves.” ‘Sometimes “I can't afford it” is the easiest way to say no without saying no. It can be “I don't want to hurt your feelings because you're lovely, but I don't really understand how this offer fits into the context of my life.' ‘When it comes to sales, we want to get down to the granular. It's having this particular problem with this particular aspect of self-worth. So when I make an invitation, it's going to be based on that.'
I need to rant. Right before I recorded this podcast, I watched my husband experience an awful sales call with an online coach in his industry. The thing that made this call especially bad was that it was a freebie consultation that ended in a HUGE amount of pressure to buy… which is exactly what I'm here to talk about today. When we offer free value – whether it's a 1:1 call or our everyday content – we need to be very aware of what the intention is behind it. Our own conditioning around scarcity can crop up when it's time to share your offer, which it's why it's important to work through your money stuff so that you can focus your sales on your clients and the value they'll get. Tune in for more on how! QUOTES ‘I'm not saying everybody who offers a strategy call for free is lying. What I'm saying is when you go on it and they're not actually giving you anything useful, trust is broken.' “There's the squirmy feelings, the way in which we get a client on a call or a customer in our emails and we feel like “If they don't buy, no one else is coming”. When we get those feelings, we need to address (why we're) not trusting clients to make decisions for themselves.” “We need to address our money stuff for other people, for our clients and customers so that they get to have a clean experience, a clean exchange when it comes to money with us.”
Welcome back to Real You Real Money, and happy new year! A new year means a new phase for so many of us, so I wanted to talk about the reality of working towards our idea of success, and why navigating the ins and outs of this is trickier than it seems. A lot of us set goals expecting that when we achieve them everything will fall into place. When we think this way, we can end up waiting for the ‘right time' when really the right time is now. The the reality of achieveing a goal can also be much different than it seems, especially when it comes with a whole bunch of new responsibilities and expectations to sustain. Tune in for tips on how to stop waiting for the permission of success, and how to make the pace of your business growth more sustainable. And if you'd like to join me for Sell That Thing, get on the wait list right here: https://ray-dodd-ltd.ck.page/6f92c19f75 QUOTES “If you want to do bold truth telling content, here is my top tip for doing that. Start saying bold truths.“ “I see a client pushing… holding on tightly to this goal. And the minute they hit it, they let go of the pen and their hand is tired and it's shaking and it needs to rest. And so of course they take their foot off the gas. They find themselves in this cycle and panic comes in and that just makes it harder and harder to actually show up. That's what happens when we treat an event as if it's success.” “We want to build businesses that let us take breaks during the journey to where we're going, which only stops if we choose to retire.”
My brilliant guest Sarah Clarke is on mission to help talented women unlock their potential and find more happiness at work. Her business Shine Brighter Consulting developed from nearly two decades of work in employee happiness and development, and helps women design their best work lives on their terms. Sarah and I chat through how creating a you-shaped business is a fundamental part of finding joy in your work – especially if you work for yourself. Tune in for insight on life during and after corporate, how to connect to your true self, and whether monetizing your passion is always a good idea. You can find out more about Sarah at www.shinebrighterconsulting.co.uk www.linkedin.com/in/sarahjclarke @thehappystartupcoach QUOTES “If you have a purpose aligned business, you can make more money and be happier. Your purpose will be attached to your lived experience. It's determined by so many different parts of who you are. It's as you unique as you are.” “I have a valuable bloody gift. I have a talent that is going to help someone in their life. And if they're willing to exchange money for that support, then you have a business. If they aren't willing to exchange money for that support, then you have a charity.” "Starting from the ground up has to be what I refer to as kind of resetting. What is a yes for you? What is a no for you? How does that play out in terms of the intuition you're going to apply to running your business?"
My guest today is the brilliant Ruthie Zerai! Ruthie a professional life and business coach who empowers people looking to become a better version of themselves everyday. We chat about the idea of having a purpose, and the practical ways that you can find and follow yours. It's easy to feel like you have to do it all, especially in some areas of the coaching space. Ruthie brings us examples from her own journey and experience that show us just how valuable it is to follow what you want instead of what you think you should want. You can find more about Ruthie at https://www.ruthiezerai.com/ @ruthiezerai REFERENCES Set Boundaries Find Peace, Nedra Glover Tawwab The Joy of Saying No, Natalie Lue QUOTES “My understanding of purpose is: how can you set yourself on a path that feels meaningful to you. And that's how you break down this whole big convoluted kind of topic around purpose into something that is digestible.” “How does this fit with the greater context of my life? I'm not saying that if it doesn't feel good, I don't do it. Because sometimes some things that are good for me might not always feel good. I'm more like ‘feel good' in terms of like, does this feel true? Or am I doing it because I'm trying to be like somebody else?”
In this episode, I'm bringing you a big confession. Last year, I set out to double my income in 2023… and it didn't happen. Not meeting a goal brings up a lot of questions for all of us – should I feel shame? Should I feel like I did something wrong? Did I do something wrong? I can tell you from experience, the answer to all three of those questions is a big resounding no. I may not have hit the numbers I set out to, but this year has taught me exactly what I needed to know. I'm entering 2024 with something that will serve me even more than a doubled income - I'm making more space for myself and my goals, making big plans and giving them the big time they need, and accepting that the ups and downs of running a business are a reality… and not a shameful one! Listen in and let's normalise embracing the unique timing of your business. QUOTE “When we decide that we want to hit a goal… we do not know what we do not know. We don't know what it's going to take, what we're going to need to go through to get to where we're going.” “Some of you are so focused on your business only being legit once you're making money, that that's the only problem you try and solve. The reason you're not making the money you want to make is because you're not showing up as the embodied version of yourself.” “Deal with each issue at a time. Make that boring plan.”
If you've ever found yourself freezing up, not getting traction, or longing for momentum that seems just out of reach, then this episode is for you. When recording this episode, I was feeling stuck myself… no matter when you're listening, there's a decent chance I may be again! The peaks and valleys of running a business (and of life in general) are something we all face. That is why I'm sharing the 5 techniques that I use to get unstuck! Tune in for how to meet yourself with compassion, from simpler motivational actions all the way to tackling the bigger challenges like burnout, dealing with change, and questioning the conditioning that stands in your way. QUOTES “If you can start the day with something you actually want to do, it will absolutely transform things. That's one of the best ways that you can get yourself unstuck.” “My stuckness is almost like my past-self holding on to where I've been, because it senses things are going to change. It senses I'm at the end of something, something new is beginning, and if I say stay stuck, I get to stay in this place that has been really uncomfortable in many ways, but is familiar.” "One of the ways you can tell if you're in that space is you're jumping from task to task. You're probably feeling overwhelmed and like you've got to do everything, but actually end up doing very little."
If you've ever struggled to balance your own needs alongside your business and the kids (or any caregiving), this episode is especially for you. My guest is the brilliant Doctor Jemma, an Empowerment Coach who helps mums bring to life their ambitions in a way that works in beautiful harmony with their life as a parent. Tune in for insight on finding fulfilment for yourself while caring for others, and meeting yourself with compassion during the ebbs and flows of it all. You can find more about Jemma at https://drjemma.co.uk/ on Instagram @ _dr.jemma QUOTES "Failure is just part of the journey. Sometimes you do things that either go right, that either go wrong. That's just the flip of the coin." "Can mums really have it all? I don't think anyone can... I think you can have what you desire, but I don't think it looks necessarily like 'having it all' in that way." "For me, balance is such a triggering word. It conveys that everything has to be of equal amounts at all times. The word that I relate to more is harmony. It allows that sense of flow, fluidity. Sometimes I need to be more with my kids as opposed to my business. Sometimes I'm working more on my business than time with my kids and that's okay."
My guest today is the brilliant Lucy Sheridan! Lucy is the one and only Comparison Coach, and helps people all over the world go from compare and despair to comparison free in their life and business. Click this link for all the info: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty QUOTES “If your brain is used to you feeling stressed and anxious around money, it will actually try and keep you there” “Our inner turmoil fears what we will lose if we choose what we need over what we believe others need. It actually doesn't consider what your clients and customers need. It considers how to be perceived as kind.” “Money talk has been so hidden from us that an open money themed community is incredibly disruptive, in a good way, to our conditioning. It's a brain rewriting tool all on its own.”
This week, I'm chatting with the brilliant Freya Powell! Freya is a Subconscious Transformation Coach specialising in helping people to make changes in their careers or businesses by harnessing the subconscious mind. Freya is also in Plenty, where we regularly find ourselves nerding out about neuroscience and the control we actually have over our brains (which is much more than we think!). In the personal development world, it's easy to fall into a pattern of fighting against our subconscious; in this episode, Freya and I look at how we can walk alongside our subconscious instead. Get on the waitlist right here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty QUOTES “It's all about brain state. So just before we go to bed where our subconscious is open, we can ask it questions because it's agnostic. The support isn't anything other than really a computer. If we start seeing it like a computer, we can go, okay, right. How do we program? How do we work with this computer as a tool?” “Beliefs are generally created through an experience in our lives. Something happens and you make a belief about yourself and the world that day to protect you for the future.” “Our subconscious works unbelievably faster than our conscious brain. If we can get the subconscious working for us, change can happen really quickly.”
I little while back, I released an episode talking about my decision to stop using the word ‘mindset'. There were a lot of (really valid) conversations happening at the time, about how ‘mindset' implied that our thoughts are the primary factor in what we can – or can't –achieve. ‘Mindset' felt like it side-lined all of the big, circumstantial things that are totally out of our control. It made things like patriarchy, racism, homophobia, and really any form of oppression a YOU problem, and not a SOCIETY problem. I just wasn't having that. What I was missing was the link between ‘mindset' and the ways we need to challenge internalised oppression in order to change our own perceived limitations. While our mindset won't be the only thing to change society, it is certainly part of what will allow us to claim our space in the face of the systems standing in our way. Tune in for more on the nuance of mindset, and the importance of looking for the meaning behind the buzzwords!
The Thriving Artists with Ali Mapletoft My guest today is the brilliant Ali Mapletoft, who supports gifted artists, performers and visionaries to generate elevated visibility, make bolder work, and live a prosperous life without losing their essence. Ali takes us on a deep dive into the intricacies of making money and being visible as an artist… in a world where algorithms and marketability are unavoidable, self-expression isn't as easy for artists as it may seem! Tune in for some amazing insights on the intersection between creativity and business, that apply even if you aren't specifically working in the arts. And if you are, have a listen to find out where the myth of the ‘struggling artist' comes from…and why it is absolutely possible to be a THRIVING artist instead. You can find out more about Ali at alimapletoft.com @alimapletoft_artist QUOTES 'Because we almost think algorithmically ourselves and perceive and observe what gets praise and what doesn't, we're actually able to kind of code ourselves to be inoffensive and popular. When we code ourselves to be in offensive and popular, we lose part of that innate kind of magic of self-expression.' ‘We do have a very ingrained idea of the struggling artist. And part of that is just an 18th century romanticisation of that archetype.' ‘You can't run away from yourself when you're running a business, because you'll be confronted daily with uncomfortable things about you.' ‘When you hit a patch in the road that's hard, you can go into this kind of resistance of, “I'm not gonna go down that path. I'm not even gonna try.” It's not self-doubt as such. It's this impatience that, “I should already have the rewards. I should already have the money, the followers, the clients, the record deal.” And that's a very real thing.'
…because I think we're doing this whole ethics thing wrong. If you're coming into the online space with good intentions (and most of us are!), selling can quickly become a vortex of do's and don'ts: show up every day, but don't flood people's inboxes. Share your offers clearly and consistently, but make sure there's never any pressure to buy. Be visible… oh wait… not that visible… too much! There's a lot of pressure to be percieved as ethical, while a lot of the time these new, unspoken rules around ethics are arbitrary and ultimately not useful for anyone involved! Listen in as I break down ethical selling'... and then break up with it once and for all. QUOTES “We end up replacing one set of rules for another set of rules. And we're not asking ourselves, ‘What do I think? What's going on in the context of what I'm doing?' “Ethics is subjective. We do not get to say this is ethical because you put it in a different context and it won't be. And we do not get to say what isn't ethical for the very same reason. So when we're talking about, ‘I'm an ethical marketer', or ‘I'm an ethical seller', what do I mean ethical? To who and when? And why?”
One of my absolute pet peeves is when people criticize other people's pricing. You may have had this happen before: someone random pops into your DMs, taking it upon themself to tell you that you are charging too much. Of course it's easy to fall into the trap of letting this shake your confidence… embracing how you price is a vulnerable thing! But when this happens, there's a lot more going on under the surface. Those who criticise high prices are usually people who haven't done the work to challenge their own conditioning around money. And since you're here, that's certainly not you! Your price needs to feel ok in your body, otherwise you'll avoid talking about it and struggle to sell. This is one of the many reasons that you – and only you - can decide what is ‘right' to charge within your business. Tune in for more on how! Interested in joining Building Powerful Money Beliefs? Check out all the info here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/buildpowerfulmoneybeliefs QUOTES “One of the things we get wrong when it comes to pricing is that we think it's a very practical exchange, a very practical kind of formula thing to figure out. What you price your work at is far more about what you believe about yourself and your work,.” “When somebody's criticising your pricing, often that is because they have been taught that there's only so much space for women. Only so many women can be at the top. Only so many women in a certain industry. So they jump in with their hurt, with their worries, with their fears, with their scarcity. And they give it to you.” “The person who slides into your DMs criticising your pricing, that comes from their money stuff. It's actually a microcosm of what happens in society as a whole.”
My guest this week is the amazing Sara Dalrymple, who has one of my absolute favourite combinations of straight talking, honesty, social awareness and business brilliance. Sara is bringing her expertise as a sales and business mentor to the podcast, as we talk about the number one reason that we believe people aren't making money – the reluctance to sell. Tune in as we take a close look at the most common fears around being visible, and the reasons behind why showing up as the real you will not only bring ease to your sales processes, but longevity, consistency, and a whole bundle of great benefits to your business. You can find more about Sara at: https://www.instagram.com/saleswithsara/ https://www.saradalrymple.co.uk/work-with-me REFERENCES The Double X Economy by Linda Scott QUOTES “There's so much that we could make hard, or we can just rip the plaster off, get started, and do it our way so that it is based on things that we're naturally good at and that feel aligned.” “Energy, being yourself, and allowing yourself to create products that you want to sell and feel really good to you… if you're not doing any of that and you're just going, ‘here's my product, do you want to buy it?' you are really limiting yourself to only the people who that day woke up, got on the internet and started googling.” “We have to be talking about our products. We have to be so clear about what they are… and really develop this natural conversation, these natural anchor points. We can't theorize everything in notepads and then never quite take the plunge.”
My guest today is the wonderful Giulia Mazzola! Giulia is a life coach for empathetic, imaginative creatives. She helps them channel their superpower – imagination – away from anxiety and overwhelm and into creating the life they want. In this episode, Giulia and I are taking a close look at the reasons that so many of us reject our intuition, and the societal messages that tell us intuition is something that's too abstract or to separate from intellect and reason. We're busting these myths by discussing where intuition really comes from, and how to embrace and follow yours! You can find out more about Julia at www.giuliamazzola.com www.instagram.com/giuliamazzola.x QUOTES “Magic is simply possibility. It's the possibility of things being different. Of being another way. Of the opening and expansion of things that we haven't even seen yet.” “You are conditioned through your habits which have been bred by society, and your nervous system, your physical responses to fear and trauma. You have these ingrained habits that lead you down specific roads… And when I think of magic, I think of bringing imagination in so that you begin to slowly carve new pathways and open things up.” “We are tricked into thinking that complexity is always the answer. In fact, the elegance and simplicity of it is what your brain will discount so that you don't do it.”
Today I'm chatting with the brilliant Pandora Paloma! Pandora is a Quantum Transformation & Business Coach, Author, and multi-6 figure business owner who combines strategy and spirituality to help female entrepreneurs build multi-dimensional wealth. Get ready, cause we're diving into a topic that always gets a strong response – how to shift with the times in your business. We're taking apart why exactly change in business brings up such big emotions, and how you can embrace and experiment with your own business evolution. Tune in for more on how to get touch with where you're at, when you do (and don't) need to outsource, and getting really intentional about where spend your time in your business. You can find out more about Pandora at www.pandorapaloma.com @pandorapaloma_ QUOTES “You are holding certainty and uncertainty in your business. You can do the same thing that you did in your last launch and not get the same results. You can never ever be certain, but there are things that you can create certainty with. I find what I'm doing outside of my business supports me to be able to hold uncertainty in my business.” “If the strategy's working but something still feels off, we know it's the energetics. That there's something else going on. That's for us to explore.” “You ask what's remained? Devotion. I can't teach people devotion. But I know that the thing that I have is that I am devoted to what I do to my clients. To being the best I can be.” “Money loves intimacy. Money loves to be connected to you. So where do you want that money to go? What's the bigger picture, ultimately?”
The name of this episode. The name of this podcast. The name of my mastermind. There's a reason that the phrase “real you real money” is at the centre of my work – it's the philosophy that I have seen success with time and time again in my clients' moneymaking (and my own!). The “real you” is everywhere: it's in your systems, in how you market your business, in the way you run your day to day. It's in your own idiosyncrasies, your desires, it's that flow that works specifically for you. Of course these things can be hard to see; perfectionism and social conditioning can get in the way of making the money that we want to make. We hold ourselves back because of it, we hide the things that might just be the greatest, shiniest bits of ourselves... not to mention add ease to our moneymaking. When you feel the pressure to conform, remember that you can trust yourself to make and to handle money exactly as you are. Tune in for my three steps on how to do just that! Interested in joining my mastermind Real You Real Money? Take a look at all the info here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/real-you-real-money QUOTES “It's not possible for us to produce the amount we're supposed to produce, certainly not, and certainly not people who work for themselves and don't have a social media team or just an extra person. It's not possible to do that.” “Sometimes it can be like our business has a personality, a shape, and a form of its own. And so how you respond to it is important, like when are the two of you most matched? When is it working for you?” “The very thing that is working so beautifully for one person, another person will try and it will land flat on its face.”
I have just returned from the first retreat I've been on since the pandemic, and couldn't wait to bring you my thoughts, discoveries and reflections from the time away! My week in Florence was absolutely transformational in the most gracious of ways, and brought to light so much of what it means to trust myself and my desires. The feeling that has resonated with me the most was having no sense of reaching outside of ourselves for success— you may have caught my recent content about rejecting the idea of a ‘higher self' and replacing it with your most fulfilled self, your most satisfied self. I wanted to bring that feeling back to share with you, so tune in for more chat on how to embrace all parts of yourself, tap into your desires, and set them free in both your life and money making. Interested in joining my mastermind Real You Real Money? Take a look at all the info here: https://www.raydodd.co.uk/real-you-real-money REFERENCES Rise by Sarah Lewis (book) QUOTES “It was incredibly healing, to not have to feel like we have to be this higher and higher and higher version of ourselves. It was all about embracing all of our parts and making space for them and allowing them.” “What the world needs is full, complex human beings that also hold money. Because it amplifies who we are.” “It's about you doing exactly whatever you want to do and making money while you do it. And it not looking a certain way: it gets to look however it looks, but the guide for us all is trust. It's knowing that we can trust that who we already are is the person that achieves the goal, not your higher self.”
I am so excited to share today's episode with you as it's quite a departure from our usual topics here on Real You Real Money. I don't typically discuss the spiritual side of coaching – a big part of this is because of my own caution around the more toxic sides of manifesting culture. But as I challenge my own biases around spirituality, I've started to discover so many nuances, which is why I'm absolutely delighted to have my guest Jazreena Harlow here to chat through it all! Jazz is the founder behind the brand Radiant Wisdom. She is a creative, educator, guide & coach who works within a mix of dynamic modalities, including Life Coaching, Human Design, Sound Healing and even Personal Branding to tune up the dial on your inner radiance. This is a great episode for anyone who is cautious around spirituality, or even curious but unsure where to begin (or of course, just those who love to hear about it!). Tune in for a conversation on what exactly Human Design is, and the concrete ways it works within both your life and business. It just reconfirms and validates things that you already know to be true but don't trust yourself on.” “We all just do what serves us at the time. And if it helps us to bring us closer to being your most authentic self, then lean into it. Ask for guidance and support from people that you can trust. Otherwise, leave it alone. If it doesn't resonate, that's okay.” “Human design is just a little bit more granular. You can use the information in a way that is practical to help you make decisions as opposed to thinking, ‘I need to be more like this.' It actually helps with decision making, kind of like an awareness tool.” “There's a level of acceptance that we all have to work with and navigate in ourselves when we find we are dismissing our own internal communication of spirituality.”
How does the phrase ‘big money' make you feel? That's exactly what we'll be diving into today, specifically why a phrase like this provokes such a big reaction from so many people, and how understanding that reaction can help us make sense of our own approach to money making. This episode started even before I hit record, when I took to Instagram to ask all of you what your gut reaction was to the phrase. Some people said it was exciting, but two thirds were more reluctant. ‘Big money' felt out of reach, unattainable, too ambitions, even corrupt. The knee jerk reaction to ‘big money' often comes from a place of playing small, of casting aside what you want as too big, too ambitious, or too much. These are subconscious instincts that we've absorbed over time, from a culture that says it's not ok to want more… which is just not true! Tune in for more on how to challenge these assumptions and embrace your money making desires and ambitions. Interested in joining Real You Real Money? And learning to unravel our conditioning around that somehow not being okay really matters.” “Your worth is immeasurable. It's already set. It's pointless to measure it because it's concrete, and it can't really be measured because it's infinite.” “People never want money just for money. We all want things, experiences, all of it, to create a certain feeling.” “Just because there's lots of people not making that much money does not mean that's okay. The vast majority of the population is not making enough money. That doesn't mean we need to put ourselves in the place of the vast majority as if that's morally superior. It's not.”
Today I'm chatting with the brilliant Vix Meldrew about her business journey and pivot to online education and mentoring for coaches and course creators. We build the experience around that.” “Is it imposter syndrome, or is it that you actually, deep down, don't think you can deliver your promise? You have so much experience, so much care for your clients, but could there possibly be a different way or a better way?” “I hold myself to the standard that a hundred percent of my clients will get a hundred percent results, so I create everything to that standard… but I know it's impossible.” “When creating courses and programs, think about profitability in terms of time, energy, and finances.”
