I'm so excited to share my conversation with the brilliant Mars Lord with you today! Mars is a Certified Life Coach, birth activist, and a leading voice in Black Maternal Health and cultural competency. She is also the creator of Abuela Doulas, a doula preparation course primarily (but not exclusively) for Black and Brown bodied people.   Mars shares her experiences as a multi award-winning doula and mentor, and the responses she's noticed from clients and businesses when educating on systemic and structural change. As someone who sits on the RCOG Race Equality Taskforce and on the Birthrights Legal inquiry into Black Maternal Health panel, Mars brings us invaluable perspective on the intersections between business, race, money making, and everything in between.   I hope you enjoy this conversation just as much as I did! www.marslord.co.uk and @_marslord www.abueladoulas.co.uk and @abueladoula   And if you caught Plenty in the introduction, you can get on the waitlist here! https://www.raydodd.co.uk/plenty-waitlist     REFERENCES Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall The Good Ally by Nova Reid   QUOTES "Misogyny is a hatred and dislike of women. It doesn't have to mean calling women la, la, la, la, la, la, la to hate them. You can be in a relationship with a woman and still be misogynistic. Misogynoir quite simply is the intersection of between race and women. Yeah. So it's misogyny with a layer, a very thick layer, of black."   "Until we listen to black women, we cannot say we listen to all women."   "Your value is set. Mm. It's not the amount of money that you earn or don't earn. It's not the amount of work that you do or don't do. It's not what people say or don't say about you. It's not what you two or don't say about yourself. It is simply because of your intent of being a human being.”   "It's not about getting money from clients; it's about serving people. It's about true service. And true service (also) isn't being walked on like a mat.”

Our guest today is Mars Lord. Mars is a coach, a birth activist, a doula educator, and the leading voice about black maternal mortality and health in the UK and beyond. She has also spoken to Parliament and can be found on the record in the history books for her work with black maternal health. As you can imagine, being a leader in these spaces carries a high level of stress and overwhelm. Mars describes her work as heavy because it comes with lots of emotional strain as she's educating people on anti-racism.  Listen as she shares how having a coach helps her carry that load, balance her mind, and apply her anger in a situation in a far more productive way than she's used to doing. We’re joined by award-winning Doula, birth worker, educator and activist Mars Lord. I met Mars about 12 years ago through my birth work… ‘What’s any of this got to do with midlife? ’I hear you ask – well, for a bit of background, I’ve seen her speak quite a few times and when she does there are always lightbulb moments in abundance for her audience. Each time I’ve come away inspired and informed. So, imagine my delight when I learnt that she is branching out, using her years of experience to coaching – it gave me a legitimate reason to ask her onto this midlife podcast …Of COURSE we didn’t stick just to the topic in hand, we talked about EVERYTHING and it was an absolute treat, because a conversation with Mars leaves you considering things differently. But, as regards the coaching - are you questioning who you are and who you want to be? Do you know some changes need to happen but you’re not sure what they are or how you go about making them? If you’re nodding your head, ask yourself what you’re waiting for. Ask yourself if you REALLY need to have a load of ducks in a row before you can move forward – I bet you don’t! Have you ever heard someone speak and just thought “oh my Lord I need this person in my life?”. Mars Lord was a guest recommended to me by a few of you listeners, and I’m so grateful! My favourite mentors in life have been women who are epic storytellers, make difficult topics easy to talk about by being warm, passionate and funny as fuck. Mars is a mother of 5, grandmother now too. She has been a doula for 15 years and she is a glorious speaker and activist. Maternal and infant mortality rates for black, brown, Asian and Indigenous people are increasing. Black women are now five times more likely to die than white women – in pregnancy, birth or within the first 12 months. Mars talks to us about how the reasons that black women are dying haven’t changed, and yet the system and the people supporting them hasn’t changed to acknowledge that they are dying. You think about other health crises in the perinatal period – like cot death or SIDS. When we found putting babies to sleep on their tummies led to cot death we started putting them on their backs – and infant morality rates dropped. When we found that smoking makes small and premature babies, we started anti smoking campaigns, and infant morbidity associated with smoking reduced. Mars talks about what it means to be a non-racist versus an anti-racist. If you’re not ok with racism, assault, obstetric violence and coercion then be more public about it. If you’re not ok with birthing people and babies dying then what change are you actioning? You are more powerful than you know. If birthworkers and the people they serve remember that they are powerful, then we will change the world. It’s probably fair to say that most women, when they’re pregnant, are a bit apprehensive about the birth. I know I was! Especially when it’s your first pregnancy, it’s totally normal to feel worried or even a bit scared about what childbirth will be like. But my guest on this episode – blogger and comedian Jess Jones aka The Fat Funny One – developed such a fear of giving birth, during her first pregnancy, she was diagnosed with Tokophobia.Tokophobia is an irrational and extreme fear of childbirth, and although it’s a very rare mental health condition, it can leave sufferers reluctant to get pregnant, or if – like Jess – they’re pregnant when it develops, it can result in panic attacks, anxiety and more.Jess talks to me about what it feels like, how it manifested itself and how she approached subsequent pregnancies in a way that tackled the Tokophobia. You can find out more about Tokophobia here, follow Jess on Instagram and buy tickets for her comedy tour. Statistically, doulas have been shown to lower the instances of cesarean sections, increase the instances of spontaneous vaginal birth, and shorten labours (statistics taken from Evidence Based Birth). But what does a doula actually do, and how do you find one if you want to work with one? Mars Lord is a doula and activist, and joins the Birth Stories Podcast to help answer all doula related questions.  Mars also talks about her birth activism, supporting Black and Asian women.   (This podcast contains discussion of maternal death and stillbirth, very sensitively handled, but it may be a trigger for some listening.)

Black women in Britain are now five times more likely to die during pregnancy, birth or postpartum than white women. This is according to the latest study from MBRRACE-UK (Mothers and Babies: Reducing Risk through Audits and Confidential Enquiries across the UK). And the risk has been increasing year on year. On today’s Woman’s Hour we concentrate on these disturbing statistics – released late last year, but receiving very little attention. We discuss why this could be happening with Elsie Gayle, an independent midwife and nurse with 30 years’ experience in the NHS; Daghni Rajasingham, a consultant obstetrician who speaks for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists; Jenny Douglas, the founder and chair of the Black Women’s Health and Well Being Research Network and a senior lecturer at the Open University; and Mars Lord, a doula. We also hear the birth experiences of some of the many women who contacted us, and are joined in the studio by Remi Sade, a writer and podcaster, and Candice Brathwaite, the founder of Make Motherhood Diverse. And we look at historical attitudes to black women’s bodies in obstetrics and gynaecology. Deirdre Cooper Owens is a Professor of History who explores how the field of gynaecology developed through the experimental treatment of black slave women in the American south. She is professor of history and medicine at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the author of Medical Bondage: Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynaecology. If you're expecting multiples then today is your turn! I can't tell you how many times I receive emails from mamas expecting multiples asking.. no BEGGING.. me for podcast episodes for them and believe me when I say this: I have been TRYING!!! [spp-player] Today I'm speaking to Mars Lord. Mars is a doula who specialises in supporting parents who are expecting multiples and what gives her special insider knowledge is the fact that she is a mum of twins. Incredibly, she had her twins AFTER her 3rd baby; you can listen to the full story in the podcast. Expecting Multiples During our chat Mars shares a ton of gold nuggets, and they're not just for the mamas expecting multiples. There's stuff there for all pregnant mamas. She starts by sharing her own twin birth journey busting the common assumptions that are held when it comes to expecting multiples; twins will come early you will birth in a hospital you will have a planned c-section you will need to be monitored you will need an epidural Instead Mars encourages you to approach your birth in the same way you would a singleton birth; Get savvy and do your birth homework Research your birth choices Understand the risks you face and decide on what is right for you. Mars likes to replace the word risk with considerations. Everything is a consideration. Trust your instincts Ask the questions and challenge what you're being told Ask your hospital for the multiples birth policy and remember protocol is not a medical reason; it’s a guideline. About Mars Lord My name is Mars Lord and I am passionate about birth and about women having and making informed choices.  I became a doula because I believe that birth is a wonderful thing and can be a wonderful time. As a mother of 5 (including twins) I know that even when it doesn’t seem to go the way that we want it to, it can still be an incredible experience.  It should be your incredible experience. Find out more about Mars at her website Mammy Doula. You can also followe her on Twitter. [spp-player]

Hello, this is Joe Valley of Empowered Papa and last week was my first episode here on Blog Talk Radio...which was awesome...and waaaay full of technical learning curve moments. This week we are going to do a do-over and have Mars Lord over again for a chat about dads and doulas. I invite you to heckle us again...and you'll have good reason this time!  My guest, Mars Lord, was one of the first people I met after creating Empowered Papa, and she has remained a close friend. She is a doula in the UK whose experience includes attending a bagillion births and giving birth to five kids, two of which are twins. Mars has a good rapport with dads and I suspect it's because she works to support dads in supporting moms.  Heckle us for real this time because we've ironed out the kinks...and we can take it! It's Monday, January 17, 2012 12 Pacific 1pm Mountain 2pm Central 3pm Eastern  8pm UK  See you there! Joe
