From the phone that sits in his pocket, a person can now order almost anything online and have it delivered to his door the next morning. For all of human history, no one on earth had that kind of power, and now, within a single lifetime, every middle-class American has it. Walmart or Amazon or other major e-commerce platforms will bring you whatever you want: a vintage edition of a particular book, a specific article of clothing in a specific size, same-day delivery of kosher pastrami from Costco. Americans are now used to getting what they want, when they want it, with very little delay. That's because the interpretation of vast amounts of data has already told retailers that a person is likely to want diapers and baby formula, or the new Winston Churchill biography, or, having bought a new phone, an extra phone charger, already prepositioned in nearby warehouses, just waiting for someone to want it and press "ship." As a result, it's hard for us to understand intuitively why some things take time to manufacture, and why, when we read reports of missile and interceptor stockpiles, the American military, with all its might, can't just order up another arsenal and have it at the ready. After this spring's combat operations against Iran, the U.S. has used up a lot of missiles. Here are some numbers, drawn from analysis published this spring by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In the course of Operation Epic Fury, the United States fired over 1,000 Tomahawk cruise missiles from a prewar inventory of approximately 3,100. Recent annual production is less than 200, and replacement is not projected until late 2030. Up to 1,430 Patriot interceptors were expended from a prewar inventory of roughly 2,330, at a production rate of 650 per year—half of which go to allied nations. And 290 of America's 360 interceptors for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense—the most advanced missile-defense system we field, known as THAAD—were fired. We produce about 96 of these interceptors per year. Needless to say, there are other things that we need those missiles for. And some strategists believe that China or another adversary might look at the state of American munitions and decide that a window of opportunity has opened up. How did the most powerful military in the history of the world arrive at this moment? What does the supply chain behind a Patriot missile actually look like, all the way down to the raw materials? And what would serious industrial mobilization require? These are among the questions that Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver takes up with Ryan McBeth. McBeth spent twenty years in the U.S Army as an infantryman, and is now an intelligence analyst with a popular YouTube channel he uses to explain military affairs to non-specialists. You can learn more about him, and follow his work, at ryanmcbeth.substack.com. In today's podcast, McBeth explains why he is not quite so worried about the state of the American arsenal. Kentucky's Republican primary out of its 4th District has turned into the most expensive House primary in American history, and it doesn't take a detective to tell where the money went. No, not into field operations. Not into policy. Not even into persuasion. It went into some of the most deranged political advertisements I have ever seen. Thirty-two million dollars dumped into a district where basically all the ad spending is concentrated around Cincinnati media buys, and the result is a nonstop fever dream where every commercial break feels like somebody slipped hallucinogens into the broadcast feed.At the center of all this is Thomas Massie, who has spent years building a reputation as the libertarian conscience of the Republican Party. He's the guy who votes no on spending bills, needles leadership, pushes Epstein file transparency, and generally treats party discipline like a disease. Normally that kind of anti-establishment energy would mesh perfectly with Trumpism. Instead, Trump absolutely hates him. Massie crossed him too many times, and now removing him from Congress has become a personal project for the president.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The actual challenger, Ed Gallrein, barely matters as a political figure in his own race. His campaign's main qualification is basically “Donald Trump likes me more than the other guy.” That's enough. The first ads are almost normal by comparison. One of them goes after Massie for abandoning his old support for term limits. Another features Massie literally walking alongside a CGI elephant wearing a MAGA hat and Trump hair while talking about how he and Trump are aligned after all. It's less “principled constitutional conservative” and more “please stop yelling at me, sir.”Then the campaign fully leaves Earth's atmosphere. One anti-Gallrein ad argues that the real force behind the race is some kind of shadowy gay liberal conspiracy, complete with rainbow lighting effects and a parade of terrifyingly unflattering images of trans women like the editor accidentally imported a folder labeled “Fox News Facebook comments.” In other words, on't be fooled by Trump endorsing Gallrein — the real people backing him are THE GAYS. It feels less like a campaign commercial and more like a local-access panic attack. And then came the AI ad. One PAC generated fake footage of Thomas Massie romantically wandering around Washington with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. Hand-holding. Walking together. Getting into cars. Ending at a hotel room with a “Do Not Disturb” sign hanging on the door. The implication is obviously that Massie is not merely politically disloyal, but sexually and emotionally aligned with the Democratic left in some kind of forbidden MSNBC throuple. This is the sort of nonsense that 32 million dollars will buy you in 2026.The craziest part is that this stuff probably works. Maybe not the specifics, but the overall environment absolutely does. If you live in Kentucky right now, these ads are your atmosphere. You cannot escape them. Basketball game? Ads. Baseball? Ads. YouTube? Ads. Streaming? Ads. Every available surface is screaming about Thomas Massie, Donald Trump, transgender conspiracies, and AI-generated hotel hookups. National media tends to treat Massie like an interesting ideological dissenter, but Republican primaries are not decided by cable-news admiration. They're decided by highly motivated Republican voters who really, really care whether Donald Trump wants somebody gone.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:33 - Kentucky Primary Ads00:13:51 - Interview with Ryan McBeth00:42:30 - $1 Billion Ballroom00:45:58 - IRS Lawsuit00:49:49 - Trump's Bad Polls00:54:08 - Interview with Ryan McBeth, con't01:32:40 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. What happens when a coach, a former D1 athlete, and a veteran basketball official sit down and actually watch game film together? This episode features Austin — former Iowa State basketball and football player, high school head coach, and creator of the fast-growing YouTube channel The Film Room — in one of the most honest coach-referee conversations you'll hear.Austin brings real game film from his season and asks the hard questions coaches are always thinking but rarely get answered: What actually makes a screen illegal? When does a roll man become a cutter — and does that distinction even matter to an official? Why does the same contact get whistled in the second half when it sailed through the first? It all gets broken down through a live film review of borderline screens, wash-outs, hand checks, and driving fouls — drawing the line between what's technically illegal and what actually rises to the level of stopping the game. The biggest takeaways from this episode go beyond any single call. Austin makes a compelling case that understanding how officials see the game makes coaches better, not just more tolerant of officiating. The episode also challenges the idea that knowing a team's scheme helps officials — arguing that preconceived notions actually hurt judgment and that every play has to be evaluated in isolation. They dig into Rule 10-14 on hand checking, the “wash out” screening technique showing up at every level, why defensive effort makes illegal contact more visible to officials, why proactive communication from refs can prevent problems before they escalate, and why coaches should always bring one specific play instead of a halftime summary when they want real answers. Essential viewing for coaches, players, and officials who want to stop talking past each other and actually understand what the other side is seeing.

Washington state Democrats have passed a new 9.9 percent income tax on millionaires, the first income tax in the state's history. The measure now heads to the governor's desk and represents a major shift in a state long known for its lack of personal income taxes. But the policy debate is already colliding with economic reality. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has announced he is relocating to Florida, a state with no income tax. That move underscores a longstanding pattern in American economics: high earners often respond to aggressive tax policies by moving to lower-tax jurisdictions. If more states pursue similar policies, the migration of wealthy taxpayers to places like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee could accelerate. The broader question is what happens if that migration significantly shrinks the tax base in high-spending states. European countries experimented with wealth taxes for years before many rolled them back after wealthy residents simply moved elsewhere. Washington may now be testing whether the same dynamic will play out inside the United States.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The Filibuster Fight and the SAVE ActMeanwhile, a new institutional battle is brewing in the Senate. Senator Ron Johnson is pushing for a vote to begin debate on ending the legislative filibuster, at least in its current form. The immediate catalyst is the House-passed SAVE America Act, which focuses on citizenship-based voter registration and voting ID requirements.Republicans do not currently have the 60 votes needed to pass the legislation under existing Senate rules. That reality has revived calls to weaken the filibuster by shifting to a “talking filibuster,” forcing senators who want to block legislation to continuously hold the floor rather than simply signaling opposition.Institutionalists in both parties warn that such a move could be the beginning of the end for the Senate's 60-vote threshold entirely. Supporters argue the change is inevitable anyway and that the current rules simply prevent major legislation from passing. Either way, the vote could force senators to go on record about how much they value the chamber's traditional rules.Jim Clyburn and the Persistence of IncumbencyFinally, South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn has announced that he plans to seek reelection at age 85. First elected in 1992, Clyburn remains one of the most influential figures in Democratic politics and a central leader within the Congressional Black Caucus. His decision highlights the enduring power of incumbency in American politics. While voters and activists often debate generational change, long-serving lawmakers frequently retain strong political machines and local loyalty that discourage serious primary challenges. For now, there is little sign that anyone in Clyburn's district is preparing to challenge him.Taken together, these developments offer a snapshot of the current political landscape: states experimenting with new tax policies, the Senate wrestling with its own rules of power, and long-time incumbents continuing to dominate the institutions they helped shape.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro on Iran and Elections00:08:47 - Iran Breakdown with Ryan McBeth01:07:54 - Update01:08:14 - Washington State Tax01:09:53 - Filibuster01:13:30 - Jim Clyburn01:14:37 - Oscar-Nominated Movie Talk with Jada Yuan02:38:28 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. I went back and watched Donald Trump's speech at Davos after the reaction to it spiraled into calls for the 25th Amendment. Having seen it in full, I have to say, that response struck me as pretty overstated. The speech was odd, repetitive, and occasionally sloppy, but it was also entirely familiar. Trump no longer has multiple registers. He speaks the same way at Davos that he does in Greensboro, North Carolina. Rally Trump is the only Trump left.Yes, he mixed up Greenland and Iceland, and that matters if you believe he is on the brink of ordering military action. But once the Greenland panic subsided and the White House quietly declared the issue settled, the speech reads less like evidence of incapacity and more like evidence of stagnation. Trump told the same tariff stories, did the same accents, and framed global politics through the same lens of personal deal making. That consistency may be unnerving, but it is not new. If anything, the Davos speech underscored how little adaptation Trump feels he needs to make, even on the world stage.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. Reporting that Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski are trying to force out CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott is not just palace intrigue. It exposes a deeper divide between political operatives and career enforcement officials. On one side are Stephen Miller's allies, filtering through Noem and Lewandowski, pushing for maximal optics and aggressive deportation numbers. On the other are figures like Tom Homan and Rodney Scott, who argue that certain tactics erode public trust and make enforcement harder, not easier. Homan's recent media blitz reflects that anxiety. He keeps stressing that deportations are happening, that priorities exist, and that blue state resistance is the real bottleneck. When enforcement professionals feel compelled to publicly justify their competence, it usually means politics has begun to overwhelm operations.Congress Moves, Barely, and Voters NoticeOn Capitol Hill, the House narrowly passed funding for the Department of Homeland Security, overcoming Democratic opposition tied to immigration enforcement concerns. It was not a clean win. Only seven Democrats supported the bill, and the compromises focused on oversight rather than substantive limits on ICE. Still, the broader takeaway is that Congress is moving more bills than expected for late January, even as shutdown deadlines loom.At the same time, new polling suggests Democrats are regaining momentum. An Emerson College survey shows Democrats leading Republicans by six points on the generic congressional ballot, alongside Trump's approval sitting well underwater. Six points is not a wave by itself, but it is the range where wave watching becomes justified. Voters are signaling frustration on affordability and foreign policy, and that dissatisfaction is beginning to register in the numbers. If that margin holds or grows, Republicans will not be able to dismiss it as noise.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:23 - Davos00:16:05 - Ryan McBeth on Venezuela00:43:29 - Update00:43:58 - DHS Infighting00:47:18 - DHS Funding00:48:28 - Midterms Polling00:50:13 - Ryan McBeth on Iran01:06:19 - Ryan McBeth on Russia-Ukraine01:14:44 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Trump is once again talking about Vladimir Putin — this time setting up a meeting in Budapest to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. That's according to Trump himself, who said the two agreed on a phone call to meet, and that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other U.S. officials would begin prep meetings with their Russian counterparts. No date has been set, but Trump described the call as productive. He also mentioned they'd loop in Zelensky during his upcoming White House visit, which adds another layer of complexity. Earlier in the week, Trump floated sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine as leverage. Whether that was serious or just bluster is up for debate, but the message was clear — he's still playing both sides. One thing he did emphasize on Truth Social was how eager Putin seemed to be about post-war trade. According to Trump, that was the real focus — not the war itself, but what comes next. This is the kind of move that makes sense if you assume Putin is trying to preempt whatever message Zelensky hopes to deliver later this week. It's also a reminder that Trump sees all of this through the lens of dealmaking, not diplomacy. He's playing to his base — the voters who see “getting a deal” as a win, regardless of what's actually in it. But as past attempts have shown, any momentum gained by just talking with Putin tends to evaporate as soon as the bombs keep falling.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The Shutdown MathSenate Majority Leader John Thune hinted that the White House might walk back some of its shutdown-related moves if Democrats agree to vote for a continuing resolution. He didn't lay out specifics, but the implication was that things like furloughs or aggressive reduction-in-force orders could be reconsidered. Thune said passing a full-year appropriations package would make more clawbacks unnecessary — but until then, it's unclear what Democrats would get in return. The rumor mill is working overtime — and the story making the rounds is that Democrats will vote for the CR, then hold a vote on Obamacare subsidies separately. Chuck Schumer says that's not the plan, but let's be real: it sounds like a deal in the making. Everyone knows the play here. The question is how quickly the Democrats can make it look like they won.At the end of the day, this is all about messaging. Democrats want to go back to their base and say they got something out of this. And if a CR plus a later vote on subsidies is the path to that — well, they'll probably take it. Everything else is just noise.John Bolton IndictedJohn Bolton's been indicted. Eight counts of transmitting and ten counts of retaining national defense information. This case centers around his handling of classified documents tied to his book, which he apparently shared through personal email and notes. The FBI raided his home, and now it's up to the courts. The Biden administration says politics aren't involved, but Bolton's been a vocal Trump critic, which puts this in awkward territory. It comes on the heels of indictments for James Comey and Letitia James — all of them known Trump opponents. In those cases, the Comey case seems flimsy, while the one against Letitia James has more substance. Meanwhile, the Bolton charges had been floating around since before Trump left office in 2021.Here's where I land: this whole mess reflects the same double standard we've seen for years. People working with classified material always say the same thing — if they did what these folks are accused of, they'd be in jail. There has to be a better way to handle these documents. Until then, we'll keep getting stories like this.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:04 - Interview with Tom Joseph00:22:23 - Russia-Ukraine00:24:43 - Shutdown00:26:21 - John Bolton00:28:26 - Interview with Ryan McBeth01:13:29 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Utah prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder in the shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The charges include obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and multiple firearm offenses. According to the affidavit, Robinson confessed to both his roommate — with whom he was in a romantic relationship — and his father. Investigators say Robinson admitted that the motive was political. He told his roommate that “some hate cannot be negotiated” and accused Kirk of “spreading hatred.”Prosecutors allege that Robinson carved antifascist slogans into the bullet casings used in the shooting. They say he left behind clothes and a backpack at the scene, both of which tested positive for his DNA. A bolt-action rifle was found nearby. Surveillance footage and Discord messages allegedly link Robinson to planning the attack, though he has not spoken directly to police. His roommate, someone transitioning from male to female who has not been publicly identified, is cooperating with investigators.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Also at the scene was a second man, George Zinn, who approached police with a knife and told them to shoot him. Zinn allegedly said he had been trying to help Robinson escape. He has not been charged in the shooting, but prosecutors say he was found with child pornography. The two men were not known to each other before that day. This case does not follow the familiar patterns of mental instability or mass shooting chaos. Prosecutors have outlined what they describe as a deliberate, targeted act with ideological motivation. Robinson allegedly stated that he believed the shooting would be “the only way” to stop Kirk. The firearm used was a bolt-action rifle, which indicates planning rather than impulsivity.Governor Spencer Cox, in his television appearances, struck a more composed tone than in his initial press conference. That earlier moment felt like a political speech. Over the weekend, however, he appeared more focused on unity and de-escalation. That stands in contrast to Trump, whose responses were angrier and more inflammatory. The White House has not issued a formal statement, but administration officials have been briefed. One of the major talking points emerging in political media is whether this attack fits into a broader pattern. Names like Paul Pelosi and Ashli Babbitt have been floated — but what happened here is categorically different. The suspect allegedly had a motive, a plan, and a clear ideological framework. This was not senseless. According to prosecutors, it was intentional and politically driven. It's still early, and these are only allegations. But the details laid out so far paint a clear picture: a targeted political killing, carried out in public, with motive stated directly. That's rare. And it's something we'll be forced to grapple with as the trial unfolds.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:02:15 - Charlie Kirk Suspect Arrested00:09:53 - Interview with Karol Markowicz00:53:28 - Update00:54:01 - Pam Bondi Hate Speech00:57:39 - Epstein01:00:15 - Hakeem Jeffries and Zohran Mamdani01:02:53 - Interview with Ryan McBeth01:52:45 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. #300 Today's guest is Dr. Andrea McBeth, a trailblazer in the world of microbiome therapeutics and the founder and CEO of Thaena — a company pioneering human-derived postbiotic solutions to support gut and whole-body health. Andrea holds a Bachelor's in Biochemistry with a focus on molecular biology from the University of San Diego, and earned her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine. Her early clinical work focused on functional GI disorders and autoimmunity, and she went on to launch one of the first stool banks for fecal microbiota transplantation to treat Clostridioides difficile infections. She's served as President of GastroANP and as adjunct faculty at NUNM, where she developed and taught graduate courses on the microbiome's role in nutrition. Passionate about bridging science and real-world healing, Andrea invented ThaenaBiotic, the first human-derived postbiotic supplement — and now leads the charge at Thaena to bring safe, scalable microbiome-based treatments to the world. In this episode, we explore: What regenerative health means in the context of human biology Why the microbiome is central to regeneration — and what a truly resilient gut ecosystem looks like How the microbiome supports repair and renewal throughout the body — from gut lining to immunity and even mood Which microbial species and metabolites stand out for their regenerative potential Daily habits and exposures that best nourish the microbiome and enhance its regenerative power Common lifestyle and environmental disruptors that undermine microbial diversity and function Whether the traditional health model focuses too heavily on eradicating pathogens (e.g., antibiotics, cleanses) instead of cultivating regeneration How Thaena is flipping the script through their unique product philosophy You'll also hear from Dr. McBeth about the innovative postbiotics she's developed — including how Thaena sources and processes human-derived microbiome metabolites, what makes them safe, and how they differ from prebiotics, probiotics, and even FMT “crapsules.” And so much more.

The madman did it. Mike Johnson pushed the Big Beautiful Bill through the House in a razor-thin 215–214 vote, with one Republican voting present. It happened in the early hours of the morning, after an all-night session where, reportedly, one GOP member literally fell asleep during the vote. It's wild how this keeps happening: Johnson, backed by Trump, threads the needle just enough to claim victory — first on his own speakership, then on the budget, and now on the crown jewel of Trump's second-term domestic agenda. The vote was close, but this wasn't chaos. It was strategy. Johnson avoided making promises, waited out the loudest factions, and let Trump do the squeezing. First, the SALT caucus got its $40,000 cap. Then, once the blue-state Republicans were on board, the House Freedom Caucus got summoned to the White House. Trump made it clear — get in line. And they mostly did. What's Actually in the BillThe bill itself is massive. It permanently extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts. It temporarily exempts tips, overtime, and auto loan interest from taxes through 2028. It raises the SALT deduction cap to $40,000 for households earning up to $500,000. It imposes work requirements on Medicaid recipients aged 18 to 65 who don't have disabilities or young children. It bans Medicaid and CHIP from covering gender-affirming care. It cuts federal funding to states offering Medicaid to undocumented immigrants. Then there's the border and defense spending: $46.5 billion for the wall, $4.1 billion for more Border Patrol agents, $1,000 asylum application fees, nearly $150 billion for defense, including missile shields and naval expansion. It throws in a Trump Savings Account for kids, expands 529s for education, and guts clean energy tax credits earlier than expected. This is not a modest proposal. This is the full kitchen sink — and it cleared the House. The Congressional Budget Office says it'll add $3.8 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. For a party that used to live and die by fiscal restraint, it's a hell of a turn. And yet, what's striking is that Democrats are the ones now talking about debt again. The shift is real. But the counterargument is simple: we've been living under this tax structure for seven years. Making it permanent just formalizes the status quo. The new spending and credits? That's where the fight will be.Next Stop: The Senate WallNone of this becomes law unless it gets through the Senate — and that's a very different battlefield. The GOP has three votes to spare. And their best lobbyist is JD Vance, who's barely spent any time in the chamber. This is not the House. Rand Paul is a hard no. Ron Johnson is already calling out the deficit. Susan Collins is watching the optics. McConnell still looms over the process, even if he's stepping back from leadership. The House version of this bill isn't making it. Changes are coming — the question is whether they come from the right or the left. Johnson's strategy got him this far. But in the Senate, Trump's grip isn't as strong, and the margin is even tighter. The message is clear: they passed it out of the House, but the real negotiation starts now.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:12 - Big Beautiful Bill Passes House00:13:34 - Interview with Ryan McBeth00:46:17 - Update00:47:21 - Israeli Embassy Shooting 01:02:26 - Senate Bill Response01:04:15 - Texas Hemp Ban01:06:06 - Interview with Ryan McBeth, cont.01:34:29 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Maureen McBeth, Senior Medical Affairs Liaison for ImpediMed, a company that develops bio-impedance spectroscopy technology for the early detection and monitoring of lymphedema. This swelling, a common side effect of breast cancer surgery, is often overlooked until it impacts the quality of life of the patient. Using this advanced diagnostic technology, objective data on the risk and progression enables personalized intervention at the mild stage to prevent progression to severe, irreversible stages. Maureen explains, "Breast cancer-related lymphedema is an underappreciated side effect. Most people think that it's not an issue anymore because we do sentinel node biopsy. Still, we know that any time lymph nodes are removed, damaged, or radiated, they can cause problems with the plumbing system in that area of the body. And inflammation starts, and that's the first thing. People don't feel that, but over time, it starts to impact the lymphatic vessels, and those lymphatic vessels don't pump as well, and a fluid buildup starts to occur. Finally, a patient may start to have symptoms like an aching or a fullness, or they notice things don't fit right, and by the time they notice it, they're likely well into stage one lymphedema, which has noticeable symptoms." "And 20 years ago, when we didn't have these methods to detect it early, we often didn't see patients even with that at stage one. We wouldn't see them until the arm got really big and noticeable. If you can imagine, the guidelines said that the arm had to be 10% larger than the other side before we would diagnose it with lymphedema. Imagine your arm being 10% bigger on one side." "One of the important things about our technology is that it's about a 30-second test. In terms of non-invasive, the patient doesn't feel it. It gives us this L-Dex score, and we can get other things like body composition. And so, at the start of someone's treatment, it can be used not only for surveillance of lymphedema but also for other side effects of cancer treatment." #ImpediMed #EarlyDetectionMatters #LymphedemaAwarenessMonth #Survivorship #SurvivorshipCare #PatientEmpowerment impedimed.com Download the transcript here

This episode includes a serious, hour-long discussion with Ryan McBeth on Syria, Iran, Lebanon, Israel and everything in between. ANDWe dive deep into this tweet…Of course, on December 24, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson issued the controversial pardon for his brother-in-law, Hunter DeButts, convicted of arms smuggling during World War I. DeButts, married to Wilson's sister-in-law, Alice, was sentenced to 15 years after British intelligence exposed his fraudulent shipping scheme. Though furious, Wilson faced mounting political pressure amid war preparations. The White House cited new evidence suggesting DeButts was manipulated by foreign spies, and critics accused Wilson of nepotism, while supporters framed the pardon as holiday clemency. After his release, DeButts vanished from public life, reportedly living quietly in Cuba until his death in 1933.Except. Wait a minute. What you just read, isn't true. I fabricated it by directing ChatGPT using Model 4o with the Mac app to make up a fictional reason why Hunter DeButts received a pardon from Woodrow Wilson. Because Hunter DeButts never received a pardon from Woodrow Wilson. Hunter DeButts did not marry Wilson's sister. Nor did he receive a pardon. There are other Hunter DeButts involved with Wilson or that time in history. And yet, Anna Navarro tweeted about it. Upon a simple Google search Navarro wound up getting serially dunked on as people realized very quickly something wasn't accurate. And so Anna Navarro posted the following explanation:She blamed ChatGPT's hallucinations.Oh, well. We've all been there. But have we? While conservatives dunked on Navarro even further for believing ChatGPT, I am here to tell you, as a reporter through and through, I don't know if ChatGPT hallucinated this. And really, I am following the research of my friend, Andrew Mayne, who first sent this to me and said, he could not replicate the Hunter DeButts answer on any ChatGPT model. Not 4o, not any model that is available, and specifically was available to Navarro on December 2nd.Now, here's something that you guys might not know about large language models: they are fairly replicable. You can get similar answers based on similar questions. It's not exact, but a hallucination is something that you should be able to recreate. It would be odd if you couldn't.And my friend Andrew should know. He worked at OpenAI. He was a science communicator. He made a lot of videos that demonstrated OpenAI products up to and including ChatGPT itself and is known as the first prompt engineer for that company. He spent a lot of time with these models. And with that, I went down my own reporting rabbit hole. Because one of the other things is that the screen grab that Anna Navarro showed was a ChatGPT search that had web results.See those little brackets with quotes in between them. Those would be annotations. Theoretically, you could click on them and they would bring you to a webpage that would show you where ChatGPT got this information. What's odd about it is that those are not the annotations that ChatGPT uses now. And they certainly were not used on December 2nd when Anna Navarro said that she did this search. So where'd she get it? What version of ChatGPT is she using? And what large language model is going to be the origin story of dear sweet DeButts?I had a theory. Let's say you're not particularly tech-savvy, if you don't know exactly what ChatGPT is or OpenAI is, then it is very easy, as ChatGPT has become more and more popular, to just go into the iOS app store and find a lot of — I'm going to call them copycats. What they really are are other apps that are using the ChatGPT API, but they do a skin on top of it and they often charge you a subscription service. Do not use them. But I did because my theory was that Ana Navarro was using one of these apps, one of these apps that are not using similar if not exact user interface the official ChatGPT app is. Maybe they are using those old annotations? All is revealed! We get to the bottom of DeButts, on this episode of the Politics Politics Politics. This is a public episode. That's not an outcome he wants. 00:11:10 We haven't mentally prepared our populations for fact we're already in WWIII. 00:13:19 Russia is basically a bully that owns a gas station. A mafia run gas station. 00:16:53 One of the issues is that there aren't necessarily enough weapons to give. 00:19:54 At some point you need to mobilise – the bodies to pull the triggers of guns. 00:24:53 I'm of opinion that either candidate is going to be ok when it comes to Ukraine. 00:27:25 Some are rearming. Poland's going to have largest land army in Europe soon. 00:33:35 We may just have more footage of Russian war crimes – executions of POWs. 00:36:06 Russians bombarded with patriotic propaganda and stories of WWII sacrifices. 00:40:02 Even though US supplying weapons we're still collaborating on spaceflight. 00:42:29 If it were a real issue, the US would revoke security clearance of Elon Musk. 00:44:22 Artillery would help Ukraine a lot. Long range weapon systems and the F-16. ---------- SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISER - A project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's frontline towns. https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras ---------- LINKS: https://www.youtube.com/@RyanMcBethProgramming https://www.ryanmcbeth.com/ https://ryanmcbeth.substack.com/ https://www.instagram.com/therealryanmcbeth/?hl=en ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment.
