In this brilliant episode, Karen shares with Jayda her experiences of going through the menopause and the differences in which Black people experience the menopause and unpacking the social racial issues behind this. They talk about the journey of aging, and your body changing, and how for Karen so much growth, positivity and beautiful change was born out of her life being turned upside down. Jayda asks Karen more around the stigma of aging, and why for Karen aging is a privilege and she has found more joy in her life the older she has become. At the same time Karen spoke about finding a balance of gratitude in life but also mourning change and loss, and what for her is the difference between healthy processing versus toxic positivity. Menopause is a transition that every woman experiences, not just the tired-looking, grey-haired white woman that often takes the spotlight in somewhat gloomy stock photos used by the media. The experience of menopause is universal, regardless of ethnicity, yet symptoms and risk factors can differ for women of different backgrounds, such as those who are black or Asian.Up until recently, UK black women haven't been represented in the menopause conversation. Thankfully, that's starting to change thanks to Karen Arthur, who I talk to in this week's episode.Karen is a fashion designer, menopause diversity campaigner and host of the ground-breaking podcast Menopause Whilst Black. She also appeared in the Channel 4 documentary about menopause with Davina McCall.Karen is also the inspiration behind Wear Your Happy, because she believes passionately in the power of clothing and accessories to enhance your mood and lift your spirits. In this episode, we delved into several topics, including:

This year, the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause plans to deepen our intergenerational narrative shift work by co-creating peer learning exchanges to normalize the menopause experience of Black people in the UK, New York, Toronto, and Puerto Rico. We are also co-hosting intergenerational menopause storytelling events called "Orisii" ( "pairs" in Yoruba). The peer learning and the Orisii dinner are being offered in partnership with community-based women-led organizations. We identified each of these locations because of their strong Black diasporic communities, we have local partners on the ground, or we are seeking to connect with more partners on the ground. In addition to the events we co-host, BGG2SM is documenting our learning during our travels, introducing how each partnering organization works to normalize menopause for Black and Queer communities and sharing stories from participants about their experiences with their bodies, identities, and relationships. So.... our podcasts in Season 5 will sound a little different. Think if "This American Life" was centering on Black intergenerational menopausal stories.... LET'S GO! This spring, we traveled to the UK to partner with Karen Arthur, fashion creative, model, menopause advocate, and creator of the UK-based podcast Menopause Whilst Black centering the menopause stories of Black women in the UK. We hosted two intergenerational gatherings, a peer learning dinner with other Black women, femmes, and gender-expansive people engaged in work in the UK focused on women's wellness, gender equity, mental health, menopause, and aging. We also co-hosted our first Orisii (Pairs) intergenerational dinner in St. Leonards-on-Sea (Sussex). Each guest attended a delicious dinner with a special "plus one" guest and was guided through conversations about bodily autonomy, body sovereignty, pleasure, identity, and mental health using the Say More deck. What does your menopause look like? The chances are it's not much like a lot of the media portrayals of the menopause! With International Women's Day fast approaching and with a theme of Embrace Equity, I wanted to take a closer look at diversity around the menopause, because it doesn't just happen to the tired-looking grey-haired white woman that seems to take centre stage in so many of the slightly depressing stock shots used in the media. Every woman goes through menopause – and it can happen at any age, some women experience premature menopause, others may have menopause triggered by medical treatment or a surgical intervention. And women of every ethnicity experience menopause and it's really important to understand that the timing and some of the symptoms and risk factors can vary quite significantly if you're black or Asian, for example. If that's you or one of your loved ones, it's essential to understand these key differences in order to take positive action and this month's guest is just the woman to help us with this. Meet Karen Arthur! She's a fashion creative, menopause diversity campaigner and host of the ground-breaking podcast Menopause Whilst Black. Karen is also the inspiration behind Wear Your Happy, because she believes passionately in the power of clothing and accessories to enhance your mood and lift your spirits.  In this episode we discuss the different way that black women experience menopause and the challenges that they face. Karen talks through her own experience and the motivation behind creating her Menopause Whilst Black podcast. She's keen to open up the menopause conversation to women of all ages and ethnicities, taking the conversation out to communities and is doing a brilliant job of it. Karen is also completely inspirational on the subject of fashion and how what you wear should make you happy. She's a complete bundle of energy and positivity – tune in to hear her words of wisdom! If you've enjoyed the podcast, please give it 5 star rating and a short review on Apple podcasts, or whichever platform you listen on, I'd be so grateful. And do tell your friends and family about it too. It really does make a huge difference to the visibility of the podcast, so that more women can find the show. Warning: Some strong language Welcome to The Menopause Revolution! A new era for a bodily phenomenon we were once too scared to call by name. Menopause is starting to show its face in our mainstream media, but how accurate is the coverage that has emerged? How much of it is stigma-smashing, and how much of it is scaremongering? And has all this talk resulted in any actual change? This week, Media Storm speaks to older women in the workplace, with a close inspection of the regularly-reported story that 900,000 women in the UK population have been driven out of work due to menopause. We'll meet some of the people behind those numbers, assess the reliability of its source, and question whether anything besides the midlife mistress is to blame. Working women often speak of feeling invisible, overlooked and unconfident as they get older, despite becoming increasingly knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. So is it menopause - or good old fashioned ageism and sexism? We are joined in the studio by Menopause Whilst Black host Karen Arthur and Effin' Hormones host Emma Goswell to talk about how the media covers menopause, rethink the representation of women in midlife, and pick apart some hare-brained headlines on hormone replacement therapy and more. The episode is hosted by Mathilda Mallinson (@mathildamall) and Helena Wadia (@helenawadia), with research by Eliza Meller. Guests:Sally Leech @MenopauseClub, Henpicked @T4W_HenpickedRachel Lankester, Magnificent Midlife @MagnifMidlifeLisa Nicholls, Fair Treatment for the Women of Wales @FTWW_Wales Riannon Palmer @lemuhn_Emma Goswell @emmagoswell @effinhormonesKaren Arthur @thekarenarthur @menopausewhilstblackSources:BUPA Research https://bit.ly/3u0EFuR Channel 4 survey https://bit.ly/3UXkF8d Workplace menopause policies https://bit.ly/3EE3UI2Fastest growing workplace demographics https://bit.ly/3EI26y6Resources:Henpicked free resources: https://henpicked.net/menopause-hub/resources/ Rachel Lankester's book https://magnificentmidlife.com/book/Fair Treatment For The Women of Wales Menopause CampaignMap your symptoms with the Balance AppWhere to find a menopause clinic in your area Get in touch:Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok @mediastormpodEmail us mediastormpodcast@gmail.comMedia Storm is an award-winning podcast brought to you by the house of The Guilty Feminist and is part of the Acast Creator Network. We move on to unpack how three years of therapy, a lot of unlearning, and her dedication to living more truthfully and authentically led to her reinvention and curation of the next stage of her life - which includes leaving London to live by the sea, saying ‘Yes' to things that bring her joy and ‘No' to the things that don't.   We touch on why therapy is the best money she's ever invested in herself, why being honest is addictive, and how it's easier to stay in our comfort zones than admit why those are no longer serving us and then do something about it.    Karen talks about why she is so protective of her boundaries in both her personal and professional life, how we can all focus on deeply knowing ourselves and prioritising ourselves in the run up to midlife and perimenopause, and how post-menopause can be a liberating and positive stage of life.    You can find Karen at https://www.thekarenarthur.com/ the podcast at https://www.thekarenarthur.com/menopausewhilstblack and she is on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/thekarenarthur/ and https://www.instagram.com/menopausewhilstblack/   Don't forget to follow us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ or find out more/listen to past episodes/subscribe to the newsletter at https://middlingalong.com   It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts to share the love! In today's episode, the conversation is with speaker, fashion designer, and host of Menopause Whilst Black podcast, Karen Arthur. We chat about the menopausal journey and what we can learn from it as a necessary process to get us to our next chapter.  Her story shares a lot of similarities to my menopause journey.  In our discussion, we speak about the lessons and gifts that we are given throughout this process. Karen shares her midlife “crisis” that began with the exit from a 28-year career in education to living her dream as a fashion designer and returning to her love of dancing.  We talk about slowing down the busyness, taking up space in our lives, listening to the wisdom of our bodies, and learning to trust ourselves as we tap into the many chapters within all of us.    Would love to hear your thoughts on this episode. Have you had a similar experience in your menopause journey?    More about Karen:    Founder and host of Menopause Whilst Black podcast, Karen provides a much-needed platform that's dedicated to addressing the unique issues Black women face as we navigate menopause and aging. In her discussions with guests, she sheds light on the lived experiences of Black women struggling with disparities in care (and concern) for our health and well-being – from both the medical community and the communities in which we live.   Website: https://www.thekarenarthur.com/ Podcast: https://www.thekarenarthur.com/menopausewhilstblack Instagram: www.instagram.com/menopausewhilstblack/ Instagram: www.instagram.thekarenarthur/

If you know me you know how much I love clothing! And todays guest truly lives that passion too. The Karen Arthur lives by the mantra of ‘do what you love and see where that takes you'.  Wearing clothes that made her feel good saved her sanity and so she started #wearyourhappy, which is all about wearing clothes that give you happy memories. Karen is a fashion designer, fashion creative, sewing tutor, podcast host, model, speaker and teacher. Karen's podcast, Menopause Whilst Black, is a podcast committed to centering the menopause journeys of Black UK women through research stories.  When Karen hit menopause she found herself falling out of love with a teaching career spanning 3 decades. She left under ill health amongst many big changes and grieving the loss of her aunt and stepped out into funemployment. As Karen started to feel better she started to think about the few items of her aunts clothing: a red maxi skirt, a pleated chiffon number and a bangle and found herself consciously choosing clothing to lift her mood.  https://www.reddskin.co.uk https://www.instagram.com/thekarenarthur/  https://open.spotify.com/show/5ibCtyPnZvCW75LndQ1Fvl?si=vJedqQrKSxS69bR75B3znw&dl_branch=1  https://www.instagram.com/menopausewhilstblack/    REFERENCED Ebook - 8 ways to wear your happy: https://www.reddskin.co.uk/wear-your-happy-shop/nyca2l7tcsgl90kwx3jmps2qubs5gr Candace Brathwaite: https://www.candicebrathwaite.com Books: The Shift by Sam Baker: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/sep/06/the-shift-by-sam-baker-review-funny-frank-and-empowering Don't Touch my Hair - Emma Dabiri: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/305/305706/don-t-touch-my-hair/9780141986289.html You're a Badass: https://jensincero.com/shop/   WE TALK ABOUT 0:54 intro 3:02 Karen in her own words 6:21 Diversity and superficial optics 7:50 Transitioning from teaching to all the different bits Karen does now 15:31 Therapy  18:10 Karen's aunts clothing and the beginnings of #wearyourhappy 23:35 Fashion for how you feel in your heart and throwing away the ‘rules' 28:41 Intuition thinking in fashion 34:36 Dressing for yourself and spreading happiness 37:24 Being seen and knowing your worth filters into your business 39:29 Clothing, confidence and honesty 43:19 Be yourself and allowing your own growth 44:29 My quick fire questions   JOIN ME! "I'm sitting at my kitchen table, hot flushing...traumatised.” Karen Arthur began speaking out about her health and wellbeing after the murder of George Floyd in summer 2020.  She'd been struggling with all kinds of menopausal symptoms and was traumatised by the news.  As the Black Lives Matter movement grew, it led Karen to ask, ‘How are other Black menopausal women coping with seeing people who look like me, being killed? How are they coping with that on top of menopausal symptoms and Covid?' So - Karen started her own podcast, Menopause Whilst Black. It's a wise, supportive, illuminating series. The Effin Hormones gang love it.  Listen to Karen discuss her career as a fashion designer and how she recovered from a breakdown - or ‘breakthrough' as she now views it.  We also discuss Karen's contribution to 'Sex Myths and the Menopause', the recent Channel 4 documentary presented by Davina McCall which has helped ignite the peri- and menopause conversation in the UK. My brilliant guest for the first episode of this season is a very special one. You may not have heard of Karen Arthur, but you sure as hell will have done by the time she's finished with you. Because Karen - the founder of Menopause Whilst Black - is a woman on a mission. In the few months since she launched Menopause Whilst Black on Instagram she has become a force to be reckoned with in the fast-growing “menopause community” (not sure what that is, but it will come as no surprise to you that it was very, very white…) and now she's launched a podcast of the same name. For the first three decades of her working life, Karen was a teacher. Then she had a breakdown that caused her to rethink everything about her life (sound familiar?!). She recreated herself as a fashion designer, activist, campaigner, model and set about giving black menopausal women a much needed voice.
