Have you been thinking about quitting something—or someone—but can't decide if it's the right time? In this episode, Nicole Kalil is joined by Goli Kalkhoran, Master Certified Life Coach and host of the Lessons from a Quitter podcast, to break down the stigma around quitting and show how it can be a path to clarity and fulfillment. Quitting isn't about giving up; it's about recognizing when it's time to stop pouring energy into things that no longer serve you. Goli shares tools and inspiration to pivot toward something intentional, aligned, and meaningful. In this episode, we explore: How to tell if it's time to quit or push harder. Why quitting isn't the opposite of perseverance but the companion to clarity. Practical steps for trusting yourself in career and life pivots. The power of choosing to stop, reset, and realign with what truly matters.

Welcome to a special pre-holidays ep of A Friend for the Long Haul! This is just shy of 2.5 hours but full of good chats. Here's the guest list! Caryn Zaner (0:01:01) is a clinical psychologist specializing in helping folks with identity & values alignment, anxiety, & group therapy. Find their professional Instagram account here. My obsession with Caryn started with this post on still Coviding and attachment theory. We discuss the stinky onion of grief, lost friendships, & values alignment. We get into setting boundaries - are we asking permission instead of actually setting them? Is it effective to appeal to empathy to “make your case” & or is it a waste of spoons? We dive into how difficult it is to make friends as adults. Caryn talks about the Wednesday night peer support group they facilitate & sends out a call to join a cross-generational queer group they want to start! Wanda Belisle (0:26:23) is a registered health coach, dealing with ME/CFS for several years & shares her experience to help people with ME & Long Covid pace. I'm not a client of Wanda's, but I find her posts helpful, & it's refreshing that when she's in a flare or crash, she shares it . In the ‘wellness' space that is rare for fear of diminishing returns on a ‘product.' We discuss pacing during the holidays. The focus is on parenting, but is relevant to all . Wanda explains how she's saved spoons by asking herself how she wants to feel, talking as a family about what's important , & how she reviews that. She offers tips on asking for help, delegating, being your own “Santa” & explaining pacing to family. As a gift, Wanda is sharing a pdf guide: Thriving this Season with ME/CFS and Long Covid for free. You can download it here.  Chimére & Tory Sweeney (0:57:54) joined me for a full-length episode, coming out soon. In this excerpt, we discuss what they have planned for the holidays - or - what they DO NOT have planned.  Kathleen Banks (1:02:35) has been working in public health for about 20 years & while we were having a casual conversation about grief (as you do) she mentioned the concentric circles of grief. We about it & it really helped me understand why I get so annoyed when other people put their grief about my illness back on me. We discuss appealing to empathy again, self-compassion (hello Kristen Neff), & touch on identifying your needs - something we'll talk about in an episode soon. Notes & links from Kathleen: My recent commentary on research priorities for Long COVID, *note for podcast that all my opinions expressed during our interview are mine & do not represent those of any of my affiliations, organizations or co-authors. “How not to say the wrong thing,” LA Times article on Ring Theory. We discuss how this illness has affected our relationships with family & friends, being a lifeline for each other, our “words” for 2024, spending time together over the holidays, & friends who “get it.”  Lesa Schultz ( 1:52:52) was my first ever podcast guest & is one of my dearest long hauler friends. Lesa has an invitation to everyone to join a Sunday night long covid support group she facilitates, & has an update on what it's been like moving across the country to be closer to family while still upholding Covid boundaries.  The end (2:08:48) is a gift from Dr. Laurie Nadel, who has been on the podcast. Dr. Nadel is a psychotherapist. She & Lesa have been building a YouTube channel of meditations, & we have an exclusive for your holiday szn. It is 18 minutes long. Hello beautiful ones! I've somehow taken a bit of an unexpected hiatus from the podcast lately, but I'm really, really delighted to share a new episode with you today.  It's a super fun and beautiful conversation between three friends – myself, Mara Glatzel and Becca Piastrelli.  In this episode, we're turning the tables and Mara and Becca are interviewing ME about the launch of my upcoming book, Mothershift:  Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage. If you aren't familiar with Mara and Becca, let me tell you a little bit about them first! Mara Glatzel is a coach, podcast host and author of the book Needy:  How to advocate for your needs and claim your sovereignty and Becca Piastrelli is a community gatherer and women's circle facilitator, podcast host and author of the book Root and Ritual:  Timeless ways to connect with land, lineage, community and the self.  These two are friends with each other and they've been my friends for quite a number of years now, and they have been *tireless* champions for Mothershift and my work.  Becca is also an alumni of my MotherSHIFT program.  They both played a key role in my ability to get a book deal for Mothershift, and for that I will be endlessly grateful. In this episode, Mara and Becca and I talk about: > Why I wrote Mothershift and why this book is so important right now.  You'll hear me talk about how I feel like I'm this book's doula, and how easy it's been to share the messages that it holds. > Why "the mothers aren't all right," including my perspective on the US Surgeon General's advisory on the mental health of parents.  We talk about the modern conditions that are particularly challenging for mothers as well as parts of the rite of passage into motherhood that have been difficult – but also filled with potential – since time immemorial. > Our relationship with social media, about how it has become a surrogate for the witnessing we need as we step into motherhood, and whether or not we're actually ever seeing the *real* truth about anyone's experience of mothering. > Is postpartum forever?  We speculate how many years it takes to feel fully embodied in your experience of motherhood. > The role of ritual in supporting and uplifting our matrescence experiences. I do hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we loved recording it, and that it gives you a special sneak peek into the writing of Mothershift.

Over the last few months, we've focused on the topic of confidence by releasing chapters of my book, Validation Is For Parking (you can still get the confidence workbook for free by visiting https://nicolekalil.com/). Last week I read the final few pages, but we're going to stick with that topic, because there's not much I care more about than YOU connecting to your confidence.  In the book I share the 5 confidence derailers that are impacting women at the highest level… these are the things that are doing damage, chipping away at, and destroying our confidence. But if I were to write the book over again, People-Pleasing would be the 6th confidence derailer that's wreaking havoc on most of our lives. So, we are re-releasing a “classic” episode we did almost a year ago… it is one of my personal favorites and it is definitely worth sharing again. Mara Glatzel, author, intuitive coach, and host of the “Needy” podcast, helps humans stop abandoning themselves and start reclaiming their humanity through embracing their needs. Because the antidote to people-pleasing is putting forward your own wants and needs The time has come for you to ask for what you need. And then expect it, first from yourself and then from others. "You're so needy" - We say that like it's an insult sometimes, but yes, yes you are needy. Because you're human! And until we can learn to identify our needs, find the words to articulate them, and adjust our schedules and interactions on any given day to accommodate them, we are doomed to burn out and be more unproductive than we ever thought possible. My guest today is Mara Glatzel, author of Needy: How to Advocate For Your Needs and Claim Your Sovereignty. Today we discuss how high-achievers can identify and honor our own needs and how it helps us show up in the workplace as more empathetic leaders and better able to respond and perform iin healthy, creative ways. And how you can identify, center, and advocate for your needs in a world or workplace that is not aligned with your values Mara shares one way to be kind and generous to ourselves every day and talks about moving your relationship with yourself from a place of self-abandonment to self-partnership. Finally, we tackle how to balance your needs while avoiding selfishness - which is kind of a trick question, as you'll learn! To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Many people do not have a vocabulary for their needs - this is starting to shift, but it is still a work in progress. We lead by example - we need to take care of ourselves to show our staff that it is okay to take care of themselves as well. Everyone will benefit as more people take care of themselves. There is a multitude of directions our needs can take at any given time. With a little creativity, needs that feel out of reach, can be met within our current life restrictions. When we start our day, we should check in with ourselves first, not check our calendar and decide who we are going to be based on those expectations. Are you needy? The correct answer is yes. We all have needs. Of course we have our basic needs to survive but as humans we have a lot more that we need to live our best life.   But what about in business? We have needs there too: we need to make money, we need to NOT work 14 hours a day, we need to not have too much on our plates.   This week on the podcast, Mara Glatzel shares more about what neediness looks like, why we need to be in daily connection with our needs, and why we should do away with the idea that what's right and good is always the same no matter what season we're in.   If you've been feeling a little “off” lately like I have, this is the episode you need. Mara shares that getting closer to our needs feels good, and we need to be seen, heard, and to matter.   And yes, we get into business and what it looks like for our human systems to fit into our business. When under stress, overwhelmed, or feeling burnt out, it is incredible how quickly many of us default back to perfectionism and people-pleasing and abandon ourselves. Maybe you've been setting them aside for the sake of another. Maybe you're scared they'll never get met. Have you ever wondered if you are too much or too needy? We carry a lot of baggage around our needs, others' needs, and the many mixed messages about having needs but doing everything possible to not be seen as ‘being needy'.The result? A relentless pursuit to keep our needs hidden, fueling feelings of scarcity, shame, and worry. But needs are an inherent part of being human. In a society that has weaponized needs so that if you need, you are “needy,” the idea of expressing our needs even evokes fear and shame. And we've created a moral binary around needs–good to have needs, bad to be needy, or good to help people but bad to be helped–which is exhausting and only serves to prop up the myth of rugged individualism.Today's guest joins me for a deep dive exploring our complicated relationship with needs and neediness. Mara Glatzel is the author of the book Needy, and we're digging into how we come to see our needs as problems, as objects of shame, as feelings to heal or to banish, instead of as natural and normal.Mara Glatzel, MSW (she/her) is an author, intuitive coach, and podcast host who helps humans stop abandoning themselves and start reclaiming their humanity through embracing their needs and honoring their natural energy rhythms. Neediness is often regarded as negative. But why? We're brought up learning to take care of other people's needs, and by adulthood we're often skilled at it. But when it comes to voicing our own needs, we become ashamed of speaking up and out. The truth is, if you don't communicate your needs so they can be met, you'll never be satisfied. And you'll keep living in a state of low-grade dissatisfaction or even resentment.  But what if you could acknowledge and communicate your needs so you can get them fulfilled? To help you with that, I invited Mara Glatzel, an intuitive coach, writer and podcast host to join us today. She teaches people how to embrace their own needs and how to articulate them so they have a chance of actually getting them met.  Mara's perspective on needs is gentle but also reorienting. It will help you if you're someone who struggles to make your needs known by giving you permission to share them. Listen in… Show Highlights Include: The actual reason we don't attend to our needs.. (5:32) How to curb and dissipate that feeling of brewing dissatisfaction (and what you do that makes you feel that way) (8:42) Why being called ‘needy' says more about the other person than you. (10:40) How our needs and wants are actually intertwined (instead of two conflicting sets of ideas). (12:50) Why we're much more skilled at meeting other people's needs than our own (and how to create a balance so you don't end up feeling resentful). (14:57) Two steps you can take to communicate your needs properly (without slinking away in shame afterwards). We talk a lot about meeting needs on the show. And mostly we focus on meeting your child's needs, because when those are met then your needs for peace and ease and collaboration with your child get met as well. But of course those are not your only needs. You also have needs independent of your relationship with your children, and you deserve to have these met. Mara Glatzel's new book focuses squarely on your needs. Why is it so hard to understand what our needs are? How can we figure out what our needs are...before they explode out of us in a meltdown? And how can we get these met on a regular basis? This episode will show you how to do that. Jump to highlights: 01:20 Introduction of the guest - Mara Glatzel 02:20 Mara shares the story at the beginning of her book where she tells her personal reflection when she felt learned the importance of asserting one's needs and the impact it has had on her  life and relationship 06:13 Mara differentiates needs from wants 09:47 The societal pressure to maintain a perfect and productive facade may just lead to burnout and a denial of our own humanity 13:31 It is important to recognize and identify  physical sensations, symptoms, and circumstances associated with burnout to prevent and reverse it 20:20 Setting boundaries with children allows parents to prioritize their own needs so they meet their children's needs as well 24:49 Consistently pushing ourselves beyond our limits and striving for perfection sets us up for burnout

As humans, we all have needs. From the time we're babies, when we literally need someone to feed us and take care of us, to adults who need connection, safety and belonging, our wants and needs are part of our inner world and part of ourselves.  But somewhere along the way we start to feel ashamed of these needs, believing we're “too much” or “weak” or too “needy.” But I believe being able to acknowledge and ask for what we need is actually a superpower!  My guest today, Mara Glatzel, is a coach who helps people stop self-abandoning and start taking ownership of their needs. She digs into the many different dynamics of what it means to be a human who has needs and how we can better take care of ourselves as we navigate this world. We talk about the most common human needs, why we tend to judge and suppress our own needs and how it's when we suppress them that our needs come out sideways (as anger, resentment, unrealistic expectations or disconnecting from self).  Mara shares how to build a practice of connecting with self to check in with your needs on a regular basis, how to reclaim your sense of self if you've lost it and how to start validating and taking care of your needs…the true definition of self-care. Listen to discover: Why having needs isn't weakness The two most common reasons people struggle with their needs Some of the most common human needs The difference between having needs and being "needy" What real self-care looks like When and how to check in with self to learn what you need What "self-partnership" is and how you can take responsibility for your needs The Child Chair (or inner child) is where we are connected to our true needs – physical, emotional and spiritual.  As healthy adults, we know how to advocate for our needs by using the power of choice and boundaries to protect ourselves, as well as asking for what we need while honoring others' boundaries.  I hope this episode helps you start owning your needs as a strength, so instead of shaming ourselves for having needs, we can become people who support ourselves and others in healthy ways.  "The reality is that our needs are a fact and not a flaw." - Mara Glatzel "A need is whatever it is that you require in order to exist and survive." - Mara Glatzel "I think we need training to tap into ourselves so we can identify what our needs are." - Michelle Chalfant "So many of us are working so hard to belong to the world around us at the cost of belonging to ourselves." - Mara Glatzel "Taking responsibility for your own needs is an essential part of self-leadership." - Mara Glatzel "The self-care that we often see and that we're often sold is prescriptive in nature...I have a lot of clients who come to me burnt out on self-care." - Mara Glatzel "When you take a moment and slow down and really tune in and ask yourself, ‘What do I need?'...it changes things." - Michelle Chalfant "It's a beautiful form of self-care to just check in with self." - Michelle Chalfant "If we don't check in, then we might be living our lives on autopilot in so many ways." - Mara Glatzel "I think anything other than a full-throated acceptance of your needs is self-abandonment." - Mara Glatzel "To learn how to be our best advocate and ask for what we need is powerful." - Michelle Chalfant LINKS & RESOURCES  Mara Glatzel Website https://www.maraglatzel.com/  "Needy" (Mara Glatzel Book) https://www.maraglatzel.com/book/  Mara Glatzel Instagram https://www.instagram.com/maraglatzel/  Free Inner Child Resource https://theadultchair.com/innerchild MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com      The Adult Chair Events https://theadultchair.com/events/  The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification     STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/  The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

We all have needs. Yet why is it so difficult to honor them? Today on Sense of Soul Podcast we have Mara Glatzel she is an intuitive coach, writer, and Needy podcast host, a podcast about identifying, honoring, and advocating for your needs. She's joining us today to tell us about her newly released book NEEDY, How to Advocate for Your Needs and Claim Your Sovereignty. As the title of her book suggests, Mara wants us to own the fact that we are needy humans – especially when we feel like we shouldn't have needs or that they're inconvenient.  As a mother of two, her sweet spot lies in helping others (many of whom are parents!) understand how to expand their realm of possibility as it relates to what is even possible to need. She believes that when we can learn how to honor our own needs, it is a beautiful act of self-love that models for others how to do the same for themselves.  You can find her, book, quiz and podcast all here at her website: https://www.maraglatzel.com https://www.theneedypodcast.com Follow her journey @maraglatzel Visit Sense of Soul at https://www.mysenseofsoul.com Do you want Ad Free episodes? We all have deep human needs—for belonging, for autonomy, for creative expression, for safety and security. But modern life can make it a real challenge to get those needs met in meaningful ways. Instead, we're offered products with flashy marketing messages. Kitchen gadgets, social media platforms, clothing, personal care products, and many others offer to help us live our best lives. Financial and educational products promise a greater sense of security and autonomy. But do these commodities really satisfy our needs? Or do they merely stave off the hunger a little longer? In this final episode of The Economics Of, I explore how various economic concepts can help us understand why we buy the things we do, how our consumption relates to larger economics forces, and how our relationships are influenced by it all. I also talk with Mara Glatzel, the author of Needy, about how to better understand our own needs and create the conditions through which we can get those needs met.Footnotes: Get your copy of Needy by Mara Glatzel Learn more about Mara Glatzel “Varieties of the Rat Race: Conspicuous Consumption in the US & Germany” by Till Van Treeck, via the Institute for New Economic Thinking “Trickle-Down Consumption” by Marianne Bertrand and Adair Morse in The Review of Economics and Statistics “Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844” by Karl Marx Adam Smith's America by Glory M. The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life

This is a really lovely conversation with Mara Glatzel, author of a new book coming out Feb 28 called, Needy: How to Advocate for Your Needs and Claim Your Sovereignty, which was recently selected by Malcolm Gladwell and Adam Grant for the Next Big Idea Club's book of the month.  Mara says she is an intuitive coach, writer, and Needy Podcast host who helps humans stop abandoning themselves and start reclaiming their sovereignty through embracing their needs and honouring their natural energy rhythms. She's also a queer, femme mother of two, recovering control freak. We talk about being multi-passionate when so much prevailing marketing tells you to niche down, we jam on balancing the need to feel safe in an overculture that is just factually unsafe in so many ways and especially so for more oppressed people, and we get into how we might approach reclaiming needs like rest and saying no, depending on where we're at in that healing journey. Wow!  I can't believe we're on season 5 of this podcast!  That is 4 years and 36 joyful episodes I've had the pleasure of sharing with you! On today's episode, I welcome The Becoming Podcast's first repeat guest, my friend Mara Glatzel.  (You can listen to our first episode together here). If you don't already know Mara, she is an intuitive coach, writer, and podcast host. She is a needy human who helps other needy humans stop abandoning themselves and start reclaiming their humanity through embracing their needs and honoring their natural energy cycles.   Here's some of what Mara and I talked about in this episode: >  The publication of Mara's book – and a sneak preview into how she's attuning to her own energy + seasonal cycles as her February 28th launch date approaches.  Mara beautifully models how tending to your needs and celebrating your successes is an evolving endeavour that even the "masters" among us will always be ever-mastering. > Grappling with the tension being "professional" and also being a human and caring for humans with oh-so-very human needs, and how it's a political statement to show up just as we are. > How seeing others' humanity begins with seeing, validating and tending to our own humanity. > Radical self-responsibility:  the fact that you are the person most intimately familiar with your needs, and are therefore the only person who can really advocate for those needs to be met, by yourself or by those around you.  > And a little treat for you at the end!   I hope you enjoy listening to this episode!   I'm so delighted to shout Mara's work from the rooftops because I think it's the foundation to any life transformation made well.

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C revisits a conversation with an incredible healer and coach. Today's guest is Mara Glatzel, MSW. She is an intuitive guide and energy healer for women who facilitates daily conversations about intention, truth, and celebration. A creative leader, Mara is expert at living in her own skin with grace and ease. At the core of her work is the desire to live a well-intentioned life, which means more joy, grit, and vibrant imperfection to spare. She is MY kind of person—how about you? Her website makes you feel warm, glittery, and nurturing, and her writings and programs are truly inspiring. Want to learn more? Join us! What you'll hear in this episode: Mara works with women who want to live with more intention and responsibility. She likes to take nebulous concepts that are hidden in layers and break them down into tangible, relatable pieces. Mara's work isn't like other therapies or focused on symptoms, but is based on self-love and self-compassion. Mara found this niche after finding herself “not fitting into” the standard therapy role. She knows what it means to struggle with body image, fears, and trusting yourself. When we sacrifice ourselves in order to “belong” to the world around us, then loneliness is the result. You can have all the “right” things happening in your life, and be MISERABLE! Mara's writing background flows perfectly into her intimate newsletter offerings, which happens to be her very favorite place to write! Mara is gifted in being able to take about difficult topics in ways that people can receive them. Her newsletter features the unusual option, “Click here if you want me to read this to you.” People love it! “Why aren't there MORE spaces in which people are lovingly spoken to?” Mara offers several programs throughout the year, many of which Laura enjoys participating in.  Mara's podcast, "Needy," is for anyone who struggles to acknowledge their own needs.
