Scottish-born guitar whiz and singer-songwriter, Bert Jansch. A pioneering force in the English folk movement starting in the mid-60s, he was often described as the "Hendrix of the acoustic guitar" and made highly alluring albums to back up that hype- ones that put him a cut above most on that folk scene indeed. It's all fair game for another series of tremendous tunes you'll hopefully enjoy.

The Full Count welcomes Mark Hebscher. A longtime sports journalist, Mark now does his own podcast. Its called XXXX, and he’s got his first book coming out next February. I thought it was a good time to get him here on The Full Count to talk about the biz, about the issues in my new book Cap In Hand and why independent voices are dead.
A new book tries to shed a little light on the dynamic between governments and the press. Power, Prime Ministers, and The Press charts the sometimes fractious, sometimes symbiotic history of the prime ministers and the Parliamentary press corps. The author is my old friend and colleague Bob Lewis and he joins me on The Full Count.

Andrew Prossin is the CEO of One Ocean and he grew up dreaming of the sea in Cape Breton. Later on he was winning races across the Atlantic in a 30-foot sailboat and sailing around Cape Horn in a 70-knot Southern Ocean gale. Possin and One Ocean have added a unique golf and cruising line called Fiddles N Sticks, a marriage of great courses in the Maritimes such as Cabot links and Cliffs, Crowbush Cove and Highland Links. We sat down with him on the Russian ship Akakdemik Ioffe on the inaugural cruise and asked him how a kid from Sydney became so enamoured with sailing.
Louisiana native Tony Joe White brought a sound straight from the bayou to the thriving late 60s soul scene, penning several signature cuts not only for himself but other artists- namely "Rainy Night in Georgia" for Brook Benton. One of those other big cuts, his immortal backwoods tale "Polk Salad Annie," is featured on this 2nd podcast themed episode about first names featured in song. This is the 2nd official podcast episode of 2018 here on the Sound & Groove Podcast. It's long overdue but no need to worry, as I've pledged another 4 episodes yet to come throughout this calendar year. This is the 2nd in a 2-part theme on songs featuring first names in the title. As in, songs that mention a person's name like Steve or Martha or Rick or Emily (none of which I've actually used! But you get the picture). So check out some of my favourite tracks that fit with the motif I've come up with this time around.

This is the 1st official podcast episode of 2018 here on the Sound & Groove Podcast. It's long overdue but no need to worry, as this will be followed by 5 more during the calendar year. This is the 1st in a 2-part theme on songs that discuss songs with first names in it, ie Rick or Jack or Emily or Alice, except none of those names are used here (but you get the idea!). So check out some of my favourite tracks that fit with this motif I've come up with this time around.
In an earlier episode of The Full Count author and social critic Heather MacDonald told us about the falsehoods behind the Black Lives Matter propaganda. Heather described how cops were being blamed in the media for targeting blacks-- even as they ignore murder rates among black teenagers that are ten times the combined rate of whites and latino teenagers. In her City Journal column she has pointed out FBI statistics that show in 2016 just 16 unarmed blacks-- in a population of 37 million-- were killed by cops. She’s shown how a 20-year decline in violent crime was reversed in 2015— coincidental with the Obama administration’s embrace of the Black Lives Matter agenda that blames cops. Needless to say such candour has attracted the attention of the extreme Left that tries to ban such heresies. Students at Claremont College said “Heather Mac Donald is a fascist, a white supremacist, a warhawk, a transphobe, a queerphobe, a classist, and ignorant of interlocking systems of domination that produce the lethal conditions under which oppressed peoples are forced to live,” The Atlantic magazine wrote "If you believe that the criminal justice system is racially biased, you need to know Heather Mac Donald. She’ll mess with your mind and make you either up your politico-cultural game or admit you were wrong.” This pushback against a courageous researcher with real data is why we always enjoy having her here on The Full Count.

As we speak Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is watching his net value sink by billions of dollars. Companies such as Cambridge Analytics, a British company, have been used by political parties on both sides of the aisle to target their voters. That’s why we have invited our friend Jess Hirsh back to the Full Count. When we don’t understand the world of data, tech and social media we call on Jesse, who lectures and writes on these subjects.

What could wrong with government paying for the coverage they get? This week on The Full Count, should the Canadian government fund the failing heritage media in this country? They've pledged $50 M to do just that. Bruce is joined by Peter Menzies, one of his old bosses at the Calgary Herald, to talk about how to save local coverage and prevent the CBC from gobbling up the online business.
Rhys and Allan recap their Oscar picks and talk their highlights from the show as well as the biggest snubs and winners.
The Academy Awards are this weekend. Naturally, Rhys and The Gonger couldn't make it five minutes into a conversation about the nominees without mentioning all the movies and or nominees who had never won before. So they decided a pod about their favorite winners and losers in Oscar history was more fun. Rhys and Allan discuss four of their favorite categories - Best Foreign Film, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay - and their favorite films to have ever triumphed in those categories (or got the shaft - SHAFT, he's one baaaaaaad motha' - SHAFT, John Shaft!)
Stress is an everyday fact of modern life. The pace of life today leaves everyone a little frazzled. This is the 6th official podcast episode of 2017 here on the Sound & Groove Podcast. It's long overdue but no need to worry, as this is the last one owed to all you great fans out there. This is the 2nd in a 2-part theme on songs that discuss colours in the lyrics or just the title if you want to get looser about it. So check out of some of my favourite tracks that fit with this motif I've come up with this time around.
Whatever you think of its methods, the #metoo campaign has had an enormous impact. The issue of sexual assault, sexual harassment and public disgrace has made headlines in the past months. From Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein to senator Al Franken to Ontario conservative leader Patrick Brown, the high and mighty have fallen like ten pins. While nearly everyone agrees with the overarching principle, many are growing concerned with the methods used to achieve these ends. Anonymous complaints, allegations that date from 20- 30 years ago, an unseemly rush to judgement have all been features of this campaign. National Post columnist Barbara Kay says it’s time to pause for a breath. In her column she writes: "Workplace sex is the only sport in town where any adult is eligible to play, but there are no protocols, no referees, the goalposts keep moving, and fouls are made up on the spot (or years later) by disgruntled players with no numbers on their jerseys. Penalties and suspensions are imposed by angry spectators, but only on the players of one team.”
Whether it’s a single-payer system such as Canada operates or a mixed private/ publicsystem as used in the United States, delivery of services has become paramount. Allthe greatest doctors and researchers in the world are pointless unless there’s anefficient system for bringing them to the public and vice versa. This week on The Full Count with Bruce Dowbiggin, our guest is Dr. Tom Feasby, the CEO of the Airdrie and Area Health Benefits Cooperative in Alberta. This is a community-led venture aiming toimprove the health of the 70,000 residents of Airdrie and to improve the delivery ofhealth care. He was also recently named to the Order of Canada.
This is the 5th official podcast episode of 2017 here on the Sound & Groove Podcast. It's long overdue but no need to worry, as this one will be followed up soon enough because it's part 1 of a 2-part theme on songs that discuss colours in the lyrics or just the title if we want to get looser about it. So check out some of my favourite tracks that fit with this motif I've come up with this time around.
UFC 219 was supposed to end the year on a bang after a difficult 2017 for the UFC. It was supposed to put Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos on the map as the best female fighter ever. It was supposed to add Khabib "the Eagle" Nurmagomedov in the love triangle for the Lightweight belt with Tony "El Cucuy" Ferguson and Conor McGregor. It did all those things. Funny how meeting expectations can be really underwhelming.
There's never enough MMA news to talk about! The week in MMA was loaded, from news about Conor McGregor and GSP to title fight announcements at UFC Middleweight and Heavyweight. Bellator had a title fight (that no one saw) while the UFC had a nice little Fight Night card (with some excellent highlights). The cherry on top was a boxing fight for the hardcore fans out there with Vasyl Lomanchenko taking on Guillermo Rigondeaux. But what got Rhys really going? His awe of the lighter weight classes.
UFC 218 had not one, but two Fight of the Year candidates with Alex Oliveira and Yancy Medeiros putting on a show alongside Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez. Even if the rest of the card had been a dumpster fire, that's enough to put it up there among the best of the year. But guess what? The rest of the card wasn't a dumpster fire! It was on fire! We have Max Holloway, who officially ended any thoughts of Jose Aldo reigning again, and Francis N'Gannou, who hit Alistair Overeem so hard Overeem nearly did a backflip, to thank for that.
This here is the 4th official episode of 2017 for the Sound & Groove Podcast but of course it's way overdue. Don't fret though. Another 2 will still follow here in the rest of 2017. This particular edition is the 2nd of a 2-episode theme dealing with songs I enjoy from artists I typically don't or ones who were often the target of the music critics' revulsion for various reasons.
This past weekend, UFC: Norfook, er, Norfaulk, uhhh, Northfolk? Whatever. The UFC had another card, one of nine straight weekends of fight cards until December 16. This one had Clay Guida and Diego Sanchez. But also, Dustin Poirier continues his improvements and Anthony Pettis continues his slide. This week's Q-Rating, Conor McGregor. But The Notorious is so damn famou his Q-Rating measured in another chemical compound, so when McGregor is naughty does it truly make a sound?
This here is the 3rd official episode of 2017 for the Sound & Groove Podcast but of course it's way overdue. Don't fret though. Another 3 will still follow here in the rest of 2017. This particular edition is the first of a 2-episode theme dealing with songs I enjoy from artists I typically don't or ones who were often the target of the music critics' revulsion for various reasons.
A night that could have gone so very, very differently turned out to be one of the best fight cards you will ever see. The return of GSP was mired by chaos - but St. Pierre certainly put all those bad feelings to rest by capturing the Middleweight title. Rose Namajunas beat out the best female fighter on the planet and just wants people to hug each other. TJ Dillashaw defeated his Cody Garbrandt, his former training partner and friend, with no love to spare - but it wasnt Ill DIll that came out the most ahead.
De greatist championne dat de UFC has evr known is coming back to de Octogon, Georges St. Pierre, will take on Michael Bisping at UFC 217! But will his fans return with him or are we in a whole new world? The best female fighter on the planet (and arguably the best, regardless of gender) Joanna Jędrzejczyk defends her title looking for a sixth title defence against the as-of-yet-to-fulfill-her-tremendous talent Rose Namajunas. Also, the grudge match of all grudge matches: Abraham Lincoln v. Benedict Arnold (at least that's maybe the way the narrative has turned), former Team Alpha Male fighter, TJ Dillahsaw, takes on current Bantamweight champion and Team Alpha Male fighter, Cody Garbrandt. There can be only one Male! And, a special version of the Q-rating in honor of Brazil's public enemy number one, Colby Covington.
Rhys wasn't too thrilled to preview UFC: Gdansk, but he sure is happy to recap UFC: Gdansk. Because UFC: Gdansk is just much damn fun to say - and Darron Till just himself on the map! With a big win over Donald Cerrone (and a bit of horsing around with Mike Perry), Till is injecting some much needed youthful exuberance to the Welterweight division. Also, DJ teaches us how to beat Brock Lesnar and stresses not to get hurt, Conor McGregor is on tap for this week's Q-Rating, and is UFC 217 at risk of under performing? GDANSK, GDANSK.
On this edition of the show, we are joined by the newest member of the family, Allan Stringer. Rhys and Allan chat about a love that could never be but then was, the sequel to both of their favorite science fiction film, Blade Runner 2049.
