Dr. Martínez-Fernández has published at least eight books, including “Key to the New World: A History of Early Colonial Cuba” in 2019, and “Revolutionary Cuba: A History” in 2014. He was also a nationally syndicated columnist for Creators Syndicate — it's an independent media and syndication company. He was on the FGCU campus last week to give a talk titled “Chiseled out of stone and cast out of bronze: a history of the Caribbean as told by its statues.” But, because of recent events in South & Central America and the Caribbean — and in Iran and the Middle East and other parts of the world and how it's all connected — we didn't talk about statues, but instead began our wide-ranging conversation with his most recent book, “When the World Turned Upside Down: Politics, Culture, and the Unimaginable Events of 2019-2022."

In this conversation, Josh Hammer examines the perilous moral confusion of our age through the prism of Israel and its survival. The attacks of October 7 and the confused global response revealed, he argues, a civilisation that has lost confidence in truth itself. When so many can no longer distinguish between barbarism and freedom, the very survival of Western civilisation is at stake. Hammer maintains that the West's survival depends on rediscovering its biblical foundations in Judaism and Christianity. Without recovering that foundation, the West cannot withstand the mounting pressures of relativism, Islamist extremism, and cultural Marxism. This is a sobering but vital discussion on Israel, anti-Semitism, and the future of the West. Joshua Hammer is the author of Israel and Civilization: The Fate of the Jewish Nation and the Destiny of the West. He is a syndicated columnist through Creators Syndicate, senior editor-at-large for Newsweek, and host of The Josh Hammer Show.

Mark interviews Leigh Rubin about 40 years of his Rubes® cartoons and his latest book THINK LIKE A CARTOONIST. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, and a word from this episode's sponsor. Learn more about this self-publishing/WIDE-publishing focused cruise. In the interview Mark and Leigh talk about: The fact that in 2024 Leigh is celebrating 40 years of producing Rubes® cartoons Some of the things that have changed since Leigh first started writing the cartoons - such as the way he delivers the daily cartoons The tools that haven't changed over the years, such as the drawing instruments he uses How far in advance the daily cartoons need to be sent in for syndication The fact that Leigh rarely ever takes a day off from drawing something new for the cartoon Leigh's book THINK LIKE A CARTOONIST and the story behind it The various types of essays that appear in this book Leigh's Cartoonist Pledge (inspired by the Boy Scout pledge) The ease of sharing cartoons on social media without any compensation given to the artist What a "workaround" is for cartooning The challenges of when humor doesn't age well because of changing sensitivities Testing the cartoons and deciding not to use certain ones that don't hit just right - (and the big stack of un-used cartoons that Leigh never submitted because they weren't funny enough) And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on the idea of what Leigh calls a "workaround" and how a similar thing might apply to writers in general as well as the idea of testing cartoons and not publishing them unless the hit right. Dr. Paul Craig Roberts discusses the ever widening war and the insanity of the West which seems to be provoking nuclear armageddon from which we might not recover. America is enabling genocide in Gaza which is destroying its international reputation and on top of that, Israel has been trying to get Washington attack Iran. It's strange that only dissident politicians get assassinated or die under mysterious circumstances (e.g. Raisi, Fico) and it's amazing Viktor Orbán is still alive. Washington is opening another front for Russia in Georgia. The migration agenda is deliberate to create Babel. Trump might end up getting assassinated. If they install the digital control system it will be total tyranny. The middle class is being wiped out and the dollar's days seem to be numbered. Ted Rall (WhoWhatWhy, Creators Syndicate) comes from the Left, Scott Stantis (Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News) comes from the Right and sparks fly.First up: the guys react to the increasing diplomatic isolation of Israel, marked by the decision of the International Court of Justice to order Israel to stand down in the Gaza Strip, following on the heels of the International Criminal Court's decision to issue a warrant for the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Scott, a supporter of Israel, debates Israel's intentions and war aims with Ted, a supporter of Palestinian emancipation.Second: Scott's expertise as a vexologist comes into play in light of Supreme Court Samuel Alito's decision to fly flags associated with the extreme Right at his homes. How much should we make of Alito's flag choices? Scott argues: a lot. Should he recuse himself from Trump's Jan. 6th case?Third: The Washington Post tries to solve its budgetary difficulties by putting A.I. "everywhere in the newsroom," whatever that means. Considering that Google AI is a total disaster, this might need to be rethunk. Congressman Drew Ferguson is a proud native of West Point whose family roots in the West Georgia area are several generations deep. He attended the University of Georgia and gained early acceptance to the Medical College of Georgia. After graduating with a degree in dental medicine, he moved back to his hometown and established a successful family dental practice. In 2008, Congressman Ferguson was elected mayor of West Point and was at the forefront of attracting and keeping jobs in his community. By lowering taxes, eliminating government barriers and reforming education, he led a community in economic ruin back to life. Today, a wide range of new businesses and industries call West Point and the surrounding area home. Led by KIA Motors, automotive suppliers and related businesses, 16,000 new jobs have been created in the community. Congressman Ferguson came to Washington to apply the lessons he learned revitalizing West Point to creating policies that once again make America the most competitive place in the world to do business.Just as important as the creation of jobs, Congressman Ferguson wants to remove barriers to prosperity that prevent those in poverty from being able to move into the middle class. Congressman Ferguson believes these problems cannot simply be regulated away, but Congress should look for solutions that get government out of the way of American opportunity for innovation and growth. This is as much a moral issue as it is a practical matter.Congressman Ferguson currently serves on the Committee on Ways and Means and the House Budget Committee. On today's show, award-winning investigative journalist and author Diane Dimond discusses her most recent book which exposes the abusive and often criminal element within the nation's guardianship/conservatorship system. The culmination of her more than seven years of investigation, “We're Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong,” is a stark look at a system that was designed to protect the nation's at-risk population but, sadly, has morphed into a predatory playground for greedy bad actors. GUEST OVERVIEW: Diane Dimond has enjoyed an award-winning career in radio, television and print. Her expertise is in the crime and justice genre, and she is the author of four books: BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LOVE: INSIDE THE MICHAEL JACKSON CASE (2005), CIRQUE DU SALAHI (2010), THINKING OUTSIDE THE CRIME AND JUSTICE BOX (2016) and WE'RE HERE TO HELP: WHEN GUARDIANSHIP GOES WRONG (2023). Dimond began her journalism career in her hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a radio newscaster and crime reporter for KOB Radio (now KKOB) she exposed corruption within the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, put a sheriff in jail and won acclaim from the American Bar Association when the association presented her with their coveted Silver Gavel Award for Outstanding Public Service reporting. As a news anchor on National Public Radio's All Things Considered, a Capitol Hill correspondent for the RKO Radio Networks, a correspondent for WCBS-TV in New York and the Senior Investigative correspondent for the syndicated program Hard Copy Dimond built a reputation as a dogged investigative journalist. Her strength is in translating complicated stories and presenting them in conversational and understandable nuggets – be it on television, radio or in print. She also worked for CNBC as co-anchor of UpFront Tonight a nightly news program with Geraldo Rivera; at MSNBC as a political correspondent and anchor; at Fox News as a freelance weekend anchor following the September 11th attacks; and at Court TV Dimond was an anchor of daytime court coverage and Chief Correspondent of the CTV investigative Unit. In 2008, Dimond began writing a weekly syndicated crime and justice column. Distributed by Creators Syndicate and distributed to newspapers nationwide. She prides herself on writing about wide-ranging crime and justice topics designed to raise public awareness and promote outside-the-box thinking. As a long-time contributor for TheDailyBeast.com Dimond covered multiple stories, including several high profile criminal trials. Among them: The Casey Anthony murder trial, the political corruption trial of former Senator John Edwards and the child molestation case against former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky. She has also contributed to Newsweek, RealClear Investigations, the Albuquerque Journal and other print publications. Another bonus classic format edition, this time featuring Steve in extended conversation with Col. Austin Bay, one of the proprietors of the indispensable Strategy Page, columnist for Creators Syndicate, and author of the splendid Cocktails from Hell: Five Complex Wars Shaping the 21st Century. His column last week is a brief and lucid tour through the proxy wars America is currently confronting (against Russia and Iran, by way of Ukraine and Israel), and our conversation goes into much greater depth on both of these conflicts as well as our potential conflict with rapidly-arming China. Can Ukraine defeat Russia? What must Israel do to prevail, and what are the risks of a wider war? Some of what Col. Bay lays out will curl your hair and make you want to buy a lot of canned goods, but he also gets into detail about how combined arms work on the battlefield and especially in the kind of urban warfare U.S. forces faced in Iraq and Israel is facing now in Gaza. The biggest risk of the moment, Bay agrees, is with America's pathetic leadership class, making him more worried for the fate of the country than at any time in the last 20 years.
