This week's Mission CTRL episode takes us behind the Blue Wall in Bridgeport. David Daniels III is a Retired Lieutenant from the Bridgeport Police Department. After serving the residents of Bridgeport for over 25 years he decided to call it quits. Daniels was born and raised in the infamous P.T. Barnum Housing Projects and what he learned there prepared him for a lifetime of adversity. What he had to deal with would cause the average person to throw in the towel. Eight months after transitioning from corporate America to Bridgeport PD, Daniels experienced something that would change the trajectory of his career. As an outspoken man of integrity he decided to live by his convictions instead of standing behind the Blue Wall. David was inspired by the late actor Richard Roundtree and at first blush one might think it's because Roundtree played John Shaft while David was coming of age in the 70's. But, that doesn't tell the whole story. Daniels is the author of Black and Blue in Bridgeport and Founder of The Bridgeport Jazz Festival. Tune in to hear how Daniels monetizes his habits during his retirement and get a peek behind the Blue Wall of Silence. Before peeling back the layers of this episode, Ramon and the PD Flight crew discuss the NFL and recap NMSDC Conference in Baltimore. . . . Richard Roundtree has been a cultural icon for most of our lives, it seems. He passed away quietly at home this week, surrounded by his family, after a two-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Richard is best known for playing Detective John Shaft in the original Shaft movie franchise, including the 1971 OG film, "Shaft," the 1972 sequel, "Shaft's Big Score," and the 1973 trilogy, "Shaft in Africa." Richard also had a role in the famous "Roots" miniseries playing the role of Sam Bennett. When Shaft got a remake in 2000, Richard reprised his role as John Shaft alongside Samuel L. Jackson. Well, I've got to tell you celebrities are pouring in the tributes for Richard today but I think the best one came from Sam Jackson, who posted on a tribute on Instagram, reading: "Richard Roundtree, The Prototype, The Best To Ever Do It!! SHAFT, as we know it is & will always be His Creation!! His passing leaves a deep hole not only in my heart, but I'm sure a lotta y'all's, too

Gaza health ministry says almost half the victims were children. The figures have not been independently confirmed. Also: Israel says it will withhold visas from UN officials - including its humanitarian chief - because of comments by the secretary-general, and we look back at the life of Richard Roundtree, the American actor best known for his starring role as detective John Shaft.
Nuggets start title defense with win over Lakers. NBA season picks: Finals teams, MVP, ROY, DPOY, and Blazers record. Sports owners should tweet more. RIP Richard Roundtree, best known as John Shaft.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 25 at 6:45 a.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees has warned that without immediate deliveries of fuel it will soon have to sharply cut back relief operations across the Gaza Strip. The territory has been blockaded and hit by devastating Israeli airstrikes since Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel more than two weeks ago. The warning came as hospitals in Gaza struggled to treat masses of wounded with dwindling resources. Health officials in the Hamas-ruled territory also said the death toll was soaring as Israeli jets continued striking the territory overnight into Wednesday. The Israeli military said its strikes hit Hamas targets. ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Otis has slammed into Mexico's southern Pacific coast as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane, bringing 165 mph winds and heavy rain to Acapulco and nearby towns. Otis rapidly intensified Tuesday, growing from a tropical storm to a Category 5 monster in 12 hours. The storm then quickly weakened to a Category 4 shortly after making landfall with its maximum sustained winds decreasing to 130 mph. The hurricane is expected to continue to weaken quickly in Guerrero state's steep mountains. But the 5 to 10 inches of rain forecast, with as much as 15 inches possible in some areas, raises the threat of landslides and floods. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have chosen congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana as their latest nominee for House speaker. Johnson will face a floor vote Wednesday trying to unify the divided Republican majority. Johnson is the fourth candidate Republicans have nominated to replace Kevin McCarthy. Johnson's nomination came just hours after an earlier pick, congressman Tom Emmer of Minnesota, dropped out amid opposition from Donald Trump. The Republican majority has been without a speaker for three weeks and is desperate to end the chaos and get back to work. Johnson had no opposition on a private tally, but many were absent. Johnson will need almost all Republicans to win the gavel in a floor vote. BANGKOK (AP) — China said the United States is the “biggest disruptor of regional peace and stability” in the world in a scathing response to a Pentagon report on China's growing military buildup. The annual report that is required by Congress is one way the Pentagon measures the military capabilities of China, which the U.S. government sees as its key threat in the Asia-Pacific region and America's primary long-term security challenge. The statement China's Ministry of Defense issued in response early Wednesday morning called the Pentagon report's findings false and used it in turn to hit back at the U.S.′ recent actions in helping Israel and Ukraine, as well as its buildup of military installations worldwide. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Roundtree, the trailblazing actor for Black filmmakers who starred as the ultra-smooth private detective in the 1971 action movie “Shaft” and several sequels, has died. He was 81. Roundtree's longtime manager, Patrick McMinn, says the actor had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday. He was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and underwent a double mastectomy. Roundtree was considered as the “first Black action hero” and became one of the leading actors in the blaxploitation genre through his New York street smart John Shaft character in the Gordon Parks-directed film. At age 28, it was Roundtree's feature film debut after starting his career as a model. The Diamondbacks end their two-plus decade World Series drought, the defending champion Nuggets raise a banner and beat the Lakers, Kevin Durant helps the Suns win in his Phoenix debut, and the Kraken rally for an overtime victory against the Red Wings. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Health Ministry in Gaza says hundreds of people were killed in the past day as a result of Israeli airstrikes. Israel has been striking Gaza since Hamas militants attacked southern Israeli towns on Oct. 7. Israel said Tuesday it had launched 400 airstrikes over the past day, killing Hamas commanders, hitting militants as they were preparing to launch rockets into Israel and striking command centers and a Hamas tunnel shaft. The Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, said more than 700 people were killed in the past day, a claim that AP could not independently verify. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have picked Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota as their nominee for House speaker, but there's no guarantee he can win the gavel. In fact, Republicans are no closer to ending the bitter infighting as Donald Trump and hard-liners have rejected the choice. As the GOP whip, Emmer jumped out front in private balloting Tuesday as the top vote-getter among the hodgepodge list of mostly lesser-known congressmen. He won a simple majority of his colleagues behind closed doors but fell far short of the support of almost all Republicans he would need during a House floor vote ahead. It's been three weeks since Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy as speaker. ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump's lead attorney in the 2020 Georgia election case against him is using another attorney's guilty plea to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the racketeering charges brought against all 19 defendants. Trump attorney Steve Sadow says it's the fourth time Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has dismissed the racketeering charge “in return for a plea to probation." Attorney Jenna Ellis pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony over efforts to overturn Trump's election loss in Georgia. The Florida resident is the fourth defendant in the case to enter into a plea deal with prosecutors. Prosecutors say Ellis helped other lawyers as they lied to Georgia lawmakers. WASHINGTON (AP) — A powerful Haitian gang leader has been charged by U.S. prosecutors with ordering the kidnapping of an American couple, which left a woman dead. The U.S. attorney's office for the District of Columbia announced a new indictment Tuesday against Vitel'Homme Innocent, the leader of the Kraze Barye gang, in connection with the October 2022 kidnapping in Haiti of Jean Franklin and Marie Odette Franklin. Marie Franklin was shot and killed in the kidnapping. Jean Franklin was held for 21 days. Authorities are offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to his arrest. He was previously charged in connection to the 2021 kidnappings of Christian missionaries. Dozens of US states, including California, New York, Arizona and Indiana are suing Meta Platforms Inc. for harming young people's mental health and contributing the youth mental health crisis by knowingly designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to the platforms. The lawsuit filed in federal court in California also claims that Meta routinely collects data on children under 13 without their parents' consent, in violation of federal law. DETROIT (AP) — A strike by autoworkers against General Motors is expected to cut the automaker's pretax earnings by $800 million this year, and another $200 million per week after that. That's according to the company's chief financial officer. And those figures just include factories that are on strike now by the United Auto Workers union. So if more plants are added, the losses will pile up further, CFO Paul Jacobson told reporters. His statements came as GM reported Tuesday just over $3 billion in net income from July through September, a figure that was 7% below a year ago due to lost production from the strike and increased warranty costs. But the results soundly beat Wall Street estimates. NEW YORK (AP) — A new shot for infants against RSV is in short supply, and U.S. health officials are telling doctors they should prioritize giving the drug to babies at the highest risk of severe disease. The one-time shot is called Beyfortus. It was developed by AstraZeneca and Sanofi. It contains a lab-made antibody that helps the immune system fight off the virus. RSV is a common cause of coldlike symptoms, but it can be dangerous for young children. A seasonal virus, it's already widely reported in the southern United States and is expected to continue to spread over the next month or two. Georgetown women's basketball coach Tasha Butts has died after a two-year battle with breast cancer. The 41-year-old coach was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer in 2021. She stepped away from coaching Georgetown last month. Georgetown athletic director Lee Reed announced Butts' death on Monday. Her diagnosis inspired the Tasha Tough campaign which has brought awareness and raised money to bring quality care to women who can't afford it through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Butts came to Georgetown from Georgia Tech this past April after a long coaching and professional WNBA career. Reigning AP national player of the year Zach Edey is a unanimous selection on The Associated Press preseason All-America team in college basketball. The big man tested the NBA waters before deciding to play one more season for No. 3 Purdue. Edey is joined by Marquette guard Tyler Kolek, Kansas center Hunter Dickinson, Duke big man Kyle Filipowski and North Carolina forward Armando Bacot. Edey was the consensus national player of the year last season after averaging 22.3 points and 12.9 rebounds while shooting nearly 61% from the field. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. CAN YOU DIG IT?SHAFT by Isaac Hayes (Enterprise, 1971)As a 19 year old, I didn't realize that history was being made, but when I saw Isaac Hayes on the Oscars, bedecked in chain-mail, at the keyboard, being wheeled onstage in a cloud of dry ice to sing The Theme From Shaft, I knew something was up. The chicka-chicka of the wah-wah guitar riff had already surgically implanted in my head by AM radio, along with Haye's chilled delivery of “That Shaft is a baaaad Mutha…” Together, these elements excited the entire country in new and electric ways. Richard Roundtree said years later that he had an instinct that John Shaft would certainly be the best role of his career - (Hayes was considered, but Gordon Parks wisely persuaded The Black Moses to create the indelible ambience instead) - but, he couldn't have prepared for the seismic impact that this film would deliver. Director Parks wanted to make a “fun” picture with a Black Action Hero, but Shaft transcended all that. All the creatives and many of the crew were also black; it was filmed largely in Harlem, and tapped into the prevailing Black Power aesthetic zeitgeist, and the film changed the “Blaxploitation” genre forever. Before Shaft, MGM had been struggling, but the studio was rescued by the film, which made 13 million from a half a mil budget. The soundtrack, with it's laid back, jazz infused arrangements by Johnny Allen, and bolstered by Haye's compatriots at Stax, The Bar-Kays, went platinum. In 2014 it was entered into The Library of Congress list of essential recordings. I coveted a black leather coat like the one that Shaft wore - but the closest I could get was a brown bomber jacket. Nobody was as cool as Shaft or Isaac Hayes - nobody could be. “Damn Straight!”

Ian and Pat break out their turtlenecks and leather trenchcoats to review Gordon Parks' seminal Blaxploitation epic, Shaft!Richard Roundtree stars as the Black private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks. It's 1971 in New York City, and John Shaft has been hired to find the kidnapped daughter of a Harlem gangster. He winds up on the wrong side of the police, the Mafia, and a crew of militants all battling to control the streets of the Big Apple. The guys continue their exploration of 70s Black cinema with a (pretty much) first-time viewing of Parks' swagger-heavy procedural--comparing it to Melvin Van Peebles' Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (which came out the same year), and questioning whether or not this film belongs in the genre with which it is most heavily associated.Shaft was recently given the deluxe treatment by The Criterion Collection, which has made the film available on 4K UHD and Blu-ray.Show Links:Watch the Shaft (1971) trailer.Keep up with Pat at HollywoodChicago.com.Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

Tori takes pleasure in speaking with the “original Black action hero” and a cultural iconoclast. Many see him simply as John Shaft with a brash, ‘take no prisoners' veneer. He however says, “what you see is not the actual”. So, he is not only cool but a true gentleman, gentle soul and master thespian whose works span 5 decades including his forthcoming show with Ava DuVernay. The man also known as double R (or RR) is his father's son and a loving father with a disarming wit that will delight if not tickle you to all ends.He began his one of a kind career as a model with the Ebony Fashion Fair, Johnson Products', and Salem Cigarettes. After joining the Negro Ensemble Company, his first role was portraying boxing legend Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope. From there, he became a leading man whose career was launched by playing the infamous and original detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft. For his performance, he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award Most Promising Newcomer Male Actor - in 1972. What followed has been a distinguished filmography including Inchon opposite Laurence Olivier, Alex Haley's Roots, City Heat opposite Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds, and David Fincher's Se7en. "Here's to Life" welcomes the brilliant, soulful and beautiful spirit that is Richard Roundtree. Of all the blaxploitation films that were made in the '70s, Shaft was the most influential and probably the coolest too. It's even had longevity, as evidenced by all the sequels and remakes. People (including the AFI) haven't forgotten about Gordon Parks' private dick flick, which had a fresh take on just what a black hero could be. Richard Roundtree wasn't righteous and measured like Sidney Poitier always had to be. John Shaft was a bad…uh, mamma jamma. This, however, wasn't a film we enjoyed as much as others of its type, partly because it's a little amateurish technically and the man's sex life is a bit dicey. Still, you can't overlook how important this movie was and is to people who look like Roundtree and not like us. Anyway, be the only one to understand our final episode of 2021 (well, you and his wuh-huh-man) as we get political, but also laugh a bunch in our 422nd Ellises' Analysis. Well, Actually: The Godfather was actually NOT one of the 25 movies inducted into the National Film Registry in 1989 (the inaugural year), but instead went in the following year. Also, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was inducted too, but it wasn't the 2nd film directed by a black person to make that cut because it only went in in 2020. Stevie Wonder - Light My Fire (1970) Listen to that bass player. Syreeta Wright - Spinnin' and Spinnin' (1974) No one was EVER as hot as Stevie in the '70s, and the album this came from proves that even occupied with his own music, he can lovingly produce one of the best female-sung records of the '70s. I love this factoid from Wikipedia: Three artists who performed on this album (Stevie Wonder, Deniece Williams, Michael Sembello) would all have Billboard number one songs ("I Just Called to Say I Love You", "Let's Hear It for the Boy", and "Maniac", respectively) within a year of each other, a decade after this album's release. Another artist on this album, Ollie Brown of Ollie & Jerry, would have a Billboard top ten single, "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us", in the same one-year period. The song "Come And Get This Stuff" was originally intended for Rufus, but lead singer Chaka Khan refused to do the song. Instead, Stevie wrote "Tell Me Something Good" for them which appeared on their album Rags to Rufus. There's no word to describe how good he was in this five-year period. This song made it to #49 in the UK, and never a peep in the US, which is a shame. Gentle Giant - Weekend Cowboy (1970) I love their sound on these early demos. Less prog than they would become, a sort of The Band meets Harry Chapin. Through the filter of England, of course. Godley and Creme - Random Brainwaves/I Pity Inanimate Objects (1979) When Gary Storm played this on Buffalo's WIZR 107.7, I had never heard anything like it. I still love what they did with the backing vocals. Jimmy "Bo" Horne - Dance Across The Floor (1978) Lawrence Hilton Jacobs - Larry's Theme (1978) He was Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington on Welcome Back, Kotter and Michael Jackson's father Joe on The Jacksons: An American Dream ("Get the switch!") but I actually find his albums in the late '70s very listenable, especially this. So much shit came out from TV stars around that era. Scott Baio was the worst. Les Humphries Singers - Mexico (1972) Included here because doing this show helped me discover them. My one-man raison d'être is to make you a believer! It's not that good. Just a strange pre-sampling curio. Nino Tempo and April Stevens - Love Story (1972) From Buffalo, NY! Their biggest hit was "Deep Purple" from 1963. They were siblings. God, she was beautiful. Her first record came out in 1950 (!) but her biggest solo hit was "Teach Me, Tiger" from 1960. She reprised this in 1965, but this was virtually the same recording, with dialog implying that she had kidnapped one of The Beatles in order to seduce him. Just wow. I love it. Men At Work - Down Under (original, non-hit version) (1980) A brief retelling of The Greg Ham Story. Don't Do Drugs. Mudcrutch - Don't Do Me Like That (original, non-hit version) (1974) The almost note-for-note prototype for the Tom Petty hit a few years later. The Osmonds - War in Heaven (1973) Sammy Davis Jr. - John Shaft (1972) Ok, ok. Shaft. Ok! Shut up and let me finish my dinner. Sha Na Na PSA (1972) Pink Floyd - Scream Thy Last Scream (1967) I was surprised to learn that Nick Mason sang this. Bee Gees - Lovers (1976) This is a very strange and wonderful album track from a band on its....third ascension? Sensational Alex Harvey Band - The Dolphins (1979) I love this song as much as any I have ever played on D-Sides. I never would have heard it if not for this show. The Langley Schools Music Project - The Long and Winding Road (1977) You should read about this. I think I read about this in RE/Search magazine. The Residents - Give it To Someone Else (1980) Every song on The Commercial Album is about 60 seconds long. There are 20 per side. Wild Cherry - Baby Don't You Know (1977) A wonderful, horrible attempt to recapture the lightning of the last single, "Play That Funky Music". THIS is how you follow up a fluke hit: One more time Well we play that funky music And we were looking so good yeah Electrified funky feeling Was coming down like I thought it would So we went out on the road yeah Try to get ourselves ahead And on the way I was surprised to discover That all those funky people Had been misled, they were shouting out Black? NO! White? Right!, Oh what a sight! I really didn't know the suckers was white Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know That the honkey's got soul Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know That the honkey's got soul Roger Nichols and Small Circle of Friends - Don't Go Breaking My Heart (1968) So beautiful, especially the "Middle 8". Just amazing harmonies. The Free Design - Day Breaks (2001) This will be my funeral song. I don't WANT a funeral. Just a little party for people to remember funny stories about me. In life, very few people are still in touch with me in an earnest sense. People have come and gone and sometimes I look around and wonder if someone should have bought me a ball gag long ago. Still, even after all the mistakes I have made in my life and my dealings with people I have lost, I know deep down that some people will be genuinely touched by the fact that we met and decided to be in each other's lives for as long as we had. If you listen to this song and put yourself in that place, celebrate the people who DID choose to be with you, no matter WHAT you said. Everyone is broken. Everyone. You're not alone. Co-written by my friend Bruce Dedrick. The Free Design - Friendly Man (1971) Adriano Celentano - Prisencolinensinainciusol (1972) This song is being used for a commercial in the US. I like to think it's because of me. The Beatles - Revolution (Take...Your Knickers Off!) (1968)
The Context of White Supremacy hosts the fifth and final study session on Ernest Tidyman's 1970 novel, SHAFT. Tidyman is a White man. He forged a distinguished journalism career working for The New York Times and Ohio's The Plain Dealer. In the midst of the so called Civil Rights Movement and the unrest of the 1960's, Tidyman decided to concoct a narrative around a black private detective named John SHAFT. This relatively short book sparked fifty years of trashy films and a television program, and mightily influenced the thoughts, speech, action, emotions, and wardrobe of generations of black people. Gus has yet to hear of any black people (including Neely Fuller Jr.) who were aware that the SHAFT franchise is the spawn of a White Man. Last week, SHAFT was beaten down by the White thugs who kidnapped Knox Parson's daughter. Following the assault, SHAFT requests a black doctor to repair his injuries. This is a significant difference from 1971 film, where a White doctor bandages a wounded Richard Roundtree. Before being battered, Tidyman has SHAFT chat with one of the mobsters. He tells the black private detective about his thoughts on White Women who have sex with "spades" and insists that these sorts like it "rough." #IsaacHayes INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943# INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

They remark that this had to be the work of a White man because black people are not great thinkers. Repeatedly, Tidyman describes Ben Buford, the only character in the book attempting to counter racism, as some type of insect (non-human). At one point, Ben Buford, SHAFT and Knox Parsons have a brawl over the details of the kidnapping. Tidyman has Buford label SHAFT as a "faggot cocksucker." The homoeroticism of the text continues, when Tidyman has a pair of White gangbangers gawk and fantasize about having anti-sex with SHAFT and/or viewing SHAFT engaged in sexual activity. #IsaacHayes INVEST in The COWS – paypal.me/TheCOWS Invest in The C.O.W.S. - Cash App: http://Cash.App/$TheCOWS The C.O.W.S. In the midst of the so called Civil Rights Movement and the unrest of the 1960's, Tidyman decided to concoct a narrative around a black private detective named John SHAFT. Gus has yet to hear of any black people who were aware that the SHAFT franchise is the spawn of a White Man. During the second session, Tidyman introduces Knox Parsons, a black criminal who hopes to hire shaft to find his missing daughter. The film portrays the missing black female as quiet and well-behaved. Tidyman describes her as a promiscuous, street-hustler. We're also introduced to Ben Buford, a black male "revolutionary," who seems to be Tidyman's composite of the many attempted counter-racist groups of the 1960's. Buford and his group do drugs, have no weapons, and are easily slaughtered by the White thugs who kidnapped Parsons's daughter. Tidyman includes fascinating commentary on the faithfulness and support of a good "dark woman," and has SHAFT remark on the so-called blackness of other Victims. #IsaacHayes INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

He routinely employs the word "fag," and has SHAFT pretend to set up a date for homosexual/anti-sexual activity with a "gay" White Man. While speaking with the police, Tidyman places SHAFT in a the "butt-cupping grip" of a steel chair. Similar to Romain Gary's WHITE DOG, the White male author obsessives over the black male physique. Tidyman greatly details the black body of John SHAFT, including scars received while fighting in Vietnam. Tidyman was reportedly unhappy that's SHAFT's veteran status was excised from the movie.

当然怎么能不提 “Do The Right Thing” 和 “Menace II Society” 这样触目惊心的作品?! Hittman, Six-Two, Nate Dogg&Kurupt) by Dr. Dre 采样了 “Bumpy’s Lament” (“Shaft” ) pimp, drug pusher 这些 persona 将黑人男性魅力具体化了,Miles Davis 这样的爵士音乐人在 “On the Corner(1972)”的封面上也体现出当时 pimp 的状况,皮条客是黑人群体中先富起来的人。
WOW!!! This week’s episode is out of this world and filled with Lunatics, parks and just outright fun in the powder or snow. NASA is planning on sending people back to the moon and are starting to plan missions in advance with an eye to researching developments for future exploration. That’s right folks, it may not be 1999 but Moonbase Alpha is finally looking at becoming a reality. Plus there are going to be new buggies and other equipment being sent to the moon so the Astronauts will have something to play with when they arrive next. Wonder if they will find that hidden base full of Nazis on the dark side of the moon or transformers?Next we look into why Manga sales are taking over the U.S comic sales. Could it be the fact that the subject matter is just so much cooler, fun and broad? Or is it part of some plot to take over the world and they are brain washing us all? Hmmm, if this was an anime episode we would now include a musical interlude. The scene, while our heroes wander the country looking for the answer our work on computers calculating and plotting what is happening. This is when the nutty and bumbling sidekick runs around in circles and makes a mess and eats lots of fried chicken. Jeepers, we are living in an anime, now I want my ramen and feel an overwhelming need to run down the street with my arms flung behind me screaming. Nope, not happening, oh well, such a shame. In response to a request from a listener we have had the Professor look into child safety measures in gaming such as the new Harry Potter Wizards Unite. We have a number of articles linked in the notes that have information that can help parents develop strategies aimed at helping protect their dirt magnets, children or teenage food disposal units. There are some really good points and suggestions in this, but as we aren’t parents we are unable to offer any expert advice. This is a really huge topic and it is something we took extremely seriously. If you have any suggestions please feel free to post them on the page and share with each other. Now, it is that time where we have the usual shout out, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. Be careful of those surprise mechanisms that try to loot you like a politician with eight arms. Take care of yourselves and look out for each other, stay hydrated and we will catch you next time. Thirty years ago, J.J. (Jessie T. Usher) was fathered by Samuel L. Jackson's Shaft, who was immediately estranged from his kid by the mother, Maya, who wants to keep her child's life from the daily danger that Shaft is surrounded by. Shaft keeps his toe in the water with J.J. by sending presents on birthdays and holidays that often show how out of touch he is, not only in what's going on in J.J.'s life but also in what is acceptable by standards of our less politically incorrect world. J.J. Shaft works primarily as a desk jockey in the FBI. J.J. learns that his old friend Karim and sometimes protector died from an overdose in Harlem. Knowing that his friend had turned his life around, J.J. thinks the death smells funny and decides to investigate the cause, leading him to ask questions in a drug dealer's lair that gets him nearly killed. Desperate to move on with his investigation, J.J. reaches out to the father he never knew, currently working as a hardboiled private investigator in town, who readily accepts his role as his son's new protector and mentor of all things "manly". They soon discover there is, of course, far more involved in Karim's death than what the official report says, and soon the men find themselves in the middle of a murder case. Tim Story directs this semi-spoof of its own franchise. Richard Roundtree takes a small role as the original John Shaft.
(Originally uploaded June 20, 2019) After nearly two decades, Shaft is back. We follow the young and naive John Shaft, Jr. as he reconnects with his estranged, free-wheeling father to investigate his best friend’s death. Does this installment do its predecessors justice, or does Hollywood need to finally let Shaft retire? Reel Underdogs are John Battiston, Trent Neely and Justin Redman. #Shaft #SamuelLJackson #RichardRoundtree Viktiga länkar: Hemsida: http://creativemeltdownpod.wordpress.com HyperURL: http://hyperurl.co/CreativeMeltdownPod iTunes/Apple: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/creative-meltdown-podcast/id1171487351 Android (Smartphone/Samsung): http://www.subscribeonandroid.com/creativemeltdownpodcast.podbean.com/feed/ Acast: https://www.acast.com/creativemeltdownpodcast Player.FM: https://player.fm/series/creative-meltdown-podcast Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1WhckMo5QmkT37CNwSBO7Z?si=VxHA6h0dQiaZD-lNKrOwxw YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA4LWmsHj8LhZ8j8SSWf1Pg?view_as=subscriber Sociala medier: Twitter: https://twitter.com/CreateMeltPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/createpod/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CreativeMeltdownPodcast/ E-mail: creativemeltdownpodcast@gmail.com
That bad ‘you-know-what’ Shaft has returned to the big screen. Samuel L. Jackson (“Captain Marvel”) is the titular private dick hero, John Shaft…or does the title also refer to his […] The post Take Two: “Shaft” (R) appeared first on KKFI.
Marvin Gaye: American singer, songwriter and record producer. Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, including "Ain't That Peculiar", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", and duet recordings with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Rossand Tammi Terrell, later earning the titles "Prince of Motown" and "Prince of Soul". 57. During the 1970s, he recorded the albums What's Going On and Let's Get It On and became one of the first artists in Motown (joint with Stevie Wonder) to break away from the reins of a production company. His later recordings influenced several contemporary R&B subgenres, such as quiet storm and neo soul. Following a period in Europe as a tax exile in the early 1980s, he released the 1982 Grammy Award-winning hit "Sexual Healing" and its parent album Midnight Love. 58. Aretha Louise Franklin: American singer and songwriter. Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was minister. In 1960, at the age of 18, she embarked on a secular career. 59. In 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Spanish Harlem" and "Think". 60. By the end of the 1960s decade she had gained the title "The Queen of Soul". 61. Franklin eventually became the most charted female artist in the history. 62. Franklin has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards and is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. Franklin has been honored throughout her career including a 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in which she became the first female performer to be inducted. She was inducted to the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In August 2012, Franklin was inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Franklin is listed in at least two all-time lists on Rolling Stone magazine, including the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time; and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. African-American Cinema 63. Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song is a 1971 American independent action thriller film written, co-produced, scored, edited, directed by and starring Melvin Van Peebles. His son Mario Van Peebles also appears in a small role, playing the title character as a young boy. It tells the picaresque story of a poor black man on his flight from the white authority. 64. Van Peebles began to develop the film after being offered a three-picture contract for Columbia Pictures. No studio would finance the film, so Van Peebles funded the film himself, shooting it independently over a period of 19 days, performing all of his own stunts and appearing in several sex scenes, reportedly unsimulated. He received a $50,000 loan from Bill Cosby to complete the project. The film's fast-paced montages and jump-cuts were unique features in American cinema at the time. The picture was censored in some markets and received mixed critical reviews. However, it has left a lasting impression on African-American cinema. 65. The musical score of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was performed by Earth, Wind & Fire. Van Peebles did not have any money for traditional advertising methods, so he released the soundtrack album prior to the film's release to generate publicity. Huey P. Newton celebrated and welcomed the film's revolutionary implications, and Sweetback became required viewing for members of the Black Panther Party. According to Variety, it demonstrated to Hollywood that films which portrayed "militant" blacks could be highly profitable, leading to the creation of the blaxploitation genre, although critic Roger Ebert did not consider this example of Van Peebles' work to be an exploitation film. 66. Release date: April 23, 1971 / Budget: $150k (~920k today) / Gross: $4.1m (~25m today) 67. Shaft is a 1971 American blaxploitation action-crime film directed by Gordon Parks and written by Ernest Tidyman and John D. F. Black. The film revolves around a private detective named John Shaft who is hired by a Harlem mobster to rescue his daughter from the Italian mobsters who kidnapped her. The film stars Richard Roundtree as John Shaft, Moses Gunn as Bumpy Jonas, Charles Cioffi as Vic Androzzi, and Christopher St. John as Ben Buford. The major themes present in Shaft are the Black Power movement, race, masculinity, and sexuality. It was filmed within the New York City borough of Manhattan, specifically in Harlem, Greenwich Village, and Times Square. 68. Shaft was one of the first blaxploitation films, and one of the most popular, which "marked a turning point for this type of film and spawned a number of sequels and knockoffs." The Shaft soundtrack album, recorded by Isaac Hayes, was also a success, winning a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture; and a second Grammy that he shared with Johnny Allen for Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; Grammy Award for Best Original Score; the "Theme from Shaft" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and has appeared on multiple Top 100 lists, including AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs. Widely considered a prime example of the blaxploitation genre. Shaft was selected in 2000 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." 69. Release date: July 2, 1971 / Budget: 500k (~3m today) / Gross: $13m (~80m today) 70. The film was one of only three profitable movies that year for MGM, 71. It not only spawned several years of "blaxploitation" action films, it earned enough money to save then-struggling MGM from bankruptcy Television: 72. Soul Train is an American music-dance television program which aired in syndication from October 2, 1971 to March 27, 2006. In its 35-year history, the show primarily featured performances by R&B, soul, dance/pop and hip-hop artists, although funk, jazz, disco and gospel artists also appeared. The series was created by Don Cornelius, who also served as its first host and executive producer. 73. Some commentators have called Soul Train a "black American Bandstand," 74. Cornelius acknowledged Bandstand as a model for his program, but he tended to bristle at the Bandstand comparisons. 75. Cornelius, with help from Jesse Jackson, openly accused Dick Clark of trying to undermine TV's only Black-owned show, when Clark launched "Soul Unlimited". 76. Cornelius was relatively conservative in his musical tastes and was admittedly not a fan of the emerging hip hop genre, believing that the genre did not reflect positively on African-American culture (one of his stated goals for the series). 77. Rosie Perez testified in the 2010 VH1 documentary Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America that Cornelius also disliked seeing the show's dancers perform sexually suggestive "East Coast" dance moves. 78. This disconnect (which was openly mocked in an In-Living Color sketch where Cornelius and the show were lampooned as extremely old and out of touch) eventually led to Cornelius's stepping down as host in the early 1990s and the show's losing its influence. The Academy Awards are this weekend. Naturally, Rhys and The Gonger couldn't make it five minutes into a conversation about the nominees without mentioning all the movies and or nominees who had never won before. So they decided a pod about their favorite winners and losers in Oscar history was more fun. Rhys and Allan discuss four of their favorite categories - Best Foreign Film, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay - and their favorite films to have ever triumphed in those categories (or got the shaft - SHAFT, he's one baaaaaaad motha' - SHAFT, John Shaft!)
Gordon Parks’ breakthrough detective film resonates with as much or more power than it did when it exploded on the scene back in 1971. Richard Roundtree leads the cast as John Shaft, the hero of Ernest Tidyman’s series of novels. The fact that Tidyman was a white novelist makes this film’s resonance all the more amazing. Below left is one of Gordon Parks’ best known photographs, taken in 1942. Parks became a highly respected photographer, doing much of his best work for LIFE magazine. Rather than retiring, he became a filmmaker in the 1960’s, as well as writing books of poetry and even music for the sequel to Shaft--Shaft’s Big Score!

But the black private dick that inspired the black action cinema/blaxploitation film genre actually made his debut on the printed page as the creation of white novelist Ernest Tidyman, who was a seasoned journalist down on his luck when he decided to try his hand at fiction. Shaft was the result, giving Tidyman the break he was looking for. The World of Shaft: A Complete Guide to the Novels, Comic Strip, Films and Television Series (McFarland, 2015) is based on the extensive research of Ernest Tidyman’s personal papers, and tells the story of John Shaft from the perspective of his creator the original source. The book also provides new insight and analyses of the writing of the Shaft novels, the films, and the television series. The World of Shaft also features first-ever coverage of the forgotten Shaft newspaper comic strip, and includes previously unseen artwork. Also included are Shaft’s recent 21st century reappearances on the printed page, in both comic book and prose form. Steve Aldous is a British banker by day and an enthusiastic writer, film fanatic and avid reader of crime fiction by night. In addition to The World of Shaft, he has written a number of well-received short stories in a wide range of styles and genres, and has been short-listed in the Writers Forum magazine short story competition. His as yet unpublished novel, a crime thriller entitled Poisoned Veins, features a modern-day black Manchester-based private investigator Joe Gibbs, and is inspired in part by Ernest Tidyman’s Shaft. Aldous resides Bury, Lancashire, UK and is a proud father of three and a loving grandfather. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew discuss the 1971 urban crime story, Shaft, starring Richard Roundtree. When a drug lord's kid gets kidnapped, John Shaft is hired to find the girl and the people who are behind the deed. Shaft is probably the most iconic Black hero of the blaxploitation genre, and for good reason.
