After an increasingly tense promotional tour that included a street brawl between Diaz and Masvidal crews, the former UFC stars, known for their striking and ability to endure pain, squared up for 10 rounds in the ring. When the final bell rang, Diaz got the nod after what many viewers felt was a neck and neck fight, with Masvidal landing some hard-hitting blows but Diaz taking them in stride and playing the numbers game to out-strike his way to victory. This Saturday, Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal will run it back nearly four years removed from their UFC bout — but this time, they'll do it in the boxing ring. While there certainly seemed to, at least, have some intrigue for the bout, the fight week — from the open workouts, to the final press conference — has been underwhelming. Will the fight itself deliver the goods? MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and José Youngs preview Saturday's DIaz vs. Masvidal fight, discuss the matchup, the tough fight week the card has had, the interest levels in the community, and what is at stake for both fighters. Additionally, they'll discuss the matchup between former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and Diaz teammate Chris Avila, other bouts that may stand out, take viewer questions, and more. DAMN! They Were Good celebrates the careers of the most exciting and influential fighters in MMA history, and on the third episode of 2023, the MMA Fighting crew remembers the best of former UFC and WEC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson. Beginning his career in 2006, Henderson quickly made a name for himself as one of the most dynamic and exciting fighters in MMA, participating in both the 2009 and 2010 Fights of the Year. Those fights, both in the WEC, set up his most memorable career run, where he served as the UFC lightweight champion from 2012 to 2013, defending the title three times. After losing his belt to Anthony Pettis in 2013, Henderson remained a going concern in the UFC lightweight and welterweight divisions before becoming one of the first major free agents to depart the UFC and head to Bellator, where he would spend the rest of his career, challenging for titles on three separate occasions. One of the lightweight division's many overlooked champions, Henderson's 17-year career came to an end earlier this month when he retired after losing the Usman Nurmagomedov in the first round of the Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix, and so to honor the man affectionately dubbed "Bendo," host Jed Meshew is joined by MMAFighting's Shaheen Al-Shatti and Mike Heck to remember their favorite moments from his incredible career. On the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer, UFC bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen and PFL lightweight finalist Stevie Ray join the show. With his main event against Song Yadong coming in September, Sandhagen previews his fight while admitting he was surprised when that name was offered to him as an opponent following back-to-back fights with TJ Dillashaw and Petr Yan. Ray also joins the show to celebrate his second consecutive win over former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and the oddity of facing the same opponent just a few weeks after their first fight. The veteran lightweight discusses his current pay situation in the PFL where he actually made less money for his rematch with Pettis than his first fight while also detailing his plans to claim the championship later this year, which he hopes will complete his comeback after he retired from the sport a few years ago. Sam Alvey also joins the show to detail how the UFC offered him the chance to finish out his contract with one fight remaining despite a lackluster resume over the past few years where he's amassed just an 0-7-1 record over his last eight fights. Alvey reveals how the UFC gave him the chance under the assumption that he would retire afterwards but he has other ideas. He also discusses his recent work on TikTok where he's amassed a very loyal following with more than 130,000 people tuning in to get his thoughts on fighting and a behind the scenes look at the UFC.
