This month sees the launch of the Relay for Life 2025 - the event takes place in a year to the day. It's a biennial charity fund raiser in the fight to beat cancer. We welcomed committee members Therese Neish and Sofia Baglietto to the studio. Childline Gibraltar has been accepted as a member of Child Helpline International (CHI), a global network dedicated to children and young people in need. In number, Gibraltar joins over 170 members in more than 140 countries and territories. The network reports over 14 million contacts a year from children and young people. Childline CEO Caroline Carter Olivero explains what this means for the charity.Childine's services are available every day of the year between 5pm and 9pm via live chat on childline.gi or on 8008 (calls are free of charge).‘One Ocean, One Climate, One Future – Together'. That's the slogan for World Oceans Day, which will be celebrated tomorrow. A day to help unite and rally the world to protect and restore our blue planet! Locally, it's being celebrated by Dive Charters, Gibraltar Sub Aqua Club, the Department of Environment, the University of Gibraltar and others. Sid Dewfall & Bianca Daniel told us more. And, Gibraltar put an end to a 13-game losing streak with an impressive goalless draw against Wales at the Estadio Algarve. It was only a friendly, no points up for grabs, but the celebrations at full time showed just how much it meant to Julio Ribas and his men. We caught up with our reporter Jose Mari Ruiz on his way back from Faro with the GBC crew. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Allein 10 Millionen Tonnen Plastikmüll landet jedes Jahr neu in unseren Ozeanen. His documentary of that voyage was nominated for an Emmy and published in the beautiful photo book: One Island, One Ocean. Exploring the Arctic led Thoreson to see the issues of climate change and water quality, and he hopes now to inspire others to explore their connections to nature and address climate issues locally and globally.

Choses à Savoir TECH VERTE

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2022 2:55

Learn more about your ad choices. In the latest “Break Room” episode of the podcast, host Dave Prodan speaks with a panel of fellow WSL employees that work across the league. Get insights from inside headquarters on the Championship Tour's “offseason,” the Challenger Series, and WSL PURE's We Are One Ocean petition. To start, the crew describes what they've been working on since the World Champions were crowned at Lower Trestles, how the offseason is getting more packed than ever, and the fast-approaching start to the 2022 season. They discuss all things Challenger Series, break down the France and Portugal events, pick out their favorite moments so far, and make some predictions for the event at Haleiwa that will decide next year's class of CT surfers. They then talk about WSL PURE and what the league has done in the conservation and sustainability spaces over the past season, the We Are One Ocean petition and campaign, and the upcoming takeover of the UN Biodiversity social accounts. Then as always, the Break Room answers a wide array of listener questions spanning topics such as Julian Wilson's future on tour, big 2022 predictions, mental health in surfing, the Metaverse, and equal pay. The National Geographic Society has recognized a fifth ocean, the Southern Ocean, on earth. How the oceans got their names - and why we don't think of them as one big ocean, which is what it is - is a long and fascinating story. Plus: a designer in South Korea has invented a "third eye" to warn people looking at their phones while walking before they collide with someone or something (or, maybe, to get them to look up more often). Irish marine social scientist and big wave surfer Dr. Easkey Britton talks about the We Are One Ocean campaign and the 30x30 petition that calls on world leaders to protect 30% of our shared one ocean by the year 2030. She dives deep into Blue Health and the countless proven mental and physical benefits of being in the ocean, from the healing effects of the water on PTSD, anxiety, and depression to the impact of cool water immersion on the nervous system. She details her family's roots in surfing, explores her competitive career and how she got into big wave surfing, and breaks down the Irish surf scene.
