TCBCast is a zoo this week! In old-school TCBCast fashion, Gurdip and Justin are ranking the songs that Elvis did mostly all about critters of the world, from hound dogs to snowbirds and everything in between. It's wildly unscientific, please don't take it too seriously! The idea is to get you thinking about the lyrics to Elvis's songs more closely. As we mention, you would be SHOCKED at how many animals get mentioned in Elvis songs you wouldn't expect - and not all movie songs, either! For Song of the Week, Gurdip re-lives his frustrations as a young Elvis fan with RCA's handling of the clearly lyrically incomplete release of "Mexico" from "Fun in Acapulco," while Justin gets funky with the Lord listening to "Seeing is Believing" from the "He Touched Me" album. If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy. (PS we have been made aware that somehow we all missed the "alligator" of Polk Salad Annie - don't come for us!!)

Inspired by the now-iconic "Vegas Rehearsal" scene from Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, and winning the Patreon poll for topic this month, Justin and Bec sit down to try to unpack Elvis's working relationships with his musical producers, what people really meant when they described Elvis as his own producer, and if that moment in the movie was really based on something that really happened (spoiler: like most things in the movie, kinda, yeah!) Then Gurdip gets tagged in the ring for Song of the Week as he tackles Elvis's 1956 cover of the Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters hit "Money Honey" while Justin try to explain to Gurdip what exactly a "mess of polk salad" really is, as he look behind Tony Joe White and his classic "Polk Salad Annie," which Elvis covered in 1970. The man who gave us "Polk Salad Annie" was born on this date in 1943
Thanks so much for joining me. This week: He's an Australian artist who's produced 20 singles and 7 studio albums, the first of which reached number one and stayed in the top 100 for two and a half years. He's won countless awards and is known as the quiet achiever of the Aussie music scene. PETE MURRAY has just released a couple of new EP's. I tracked him down to his home in Byron Bay, NSW to learn more about his latest music. BILLY SWAN epitomises the genre that is 'One-Hit-Wonders' and he couldn't be happier about it. He never imagined he'd find success at all but went on to work with Kris Kristofferson and to produce the legendary Polk Salad Annie for Tony Joe White. Can you name Billy's signature tune? If you said ' I Can Help' - you're right! Tune in to hear all of Billy's stories, they're amazing. They were one of the UK's most respected rock bands and their guitarist, MICK GRABHAM was one of the best. Best known for his five-year stint in the 1970s, Mick had previously played in the minor British late-'60s band Plastic Penny, also logging in time with the even more obscure Cochise and the Guitar Orchestra. I catch up with Mick this week both to reminisce about his days with Procol Harum and to preview his fabulous new solo album. Any guest requests? Just send me an email to sandy@abreathoffreshair.com.au Check out the website too where you can subscribe and read lots of extra tidbits about my guests. www.abreathoffreshair.com.au Also, let me know what you think of the show and if you like it, could you do me a favour and please share it with your friends? Thanks Love Sandy

I became an Elvis fan when I was nine, and a fan of Tony Joe White when I was eighteen. So it was heaven, twenty or so years later, to sit and chat with Tony Joe about Elvis's "out there" live version of Polk Salad Annie and the sessions that led to Elvis recording other Tony Joe White songs such as For Ol' Times Sake and I've Got a Thing About You, Baby. A view from the inside!

Label: Monument 1206Year: 1970Condition: M-Price: $15.00Like White's masterpiece, "Polk Salad Annie," the sound of this track borders on three genres: Rockabilly, Southern Rock, and, given the beat and backing vocals, Northern Soul. Not to be missed! Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Monument Records factory sleeve. It has Near Mint labels and, despite some light scuffing on the vinyl, very nearly pristine audio.
This year's holiday season will be like no other since the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. Families have been instructed to avoid large gatherings, and as we move into December many celebrations will become virtual. That said, we’re continuing our tradition of focusing this seasonal program on songs about travel and food. We'll hear music from Gillian Welch, Joel Mabus, Tom Rush, The Good Ol' Persons, Tony Joe White and many more. Remembering the traditions of Thanksgiving … this week on The Sing Out! Radio Magazine. After a brief holiday break, the guys are back to review the "Elvis album without Elvis," James Burton's 1971 solo debut, "The Guitar Sounds of James Burton." Cut at an Elvis session with the TCB Band after Elvis left due to an eye problem, the lead track from the album, a cover of "Polk Salad Annie," featured heavily in the 2019 film "Ford vs Ferrari" and now Justin & Gurdip see if the album holds up. Then for Song of the Week, Gurdip sings the praises of the Big Boy Crudup R&B classic "My Baby Left Me" while Justin covers the history behind Elvis' version of the George Jones weeper "She Thinks I Still Care." Featured Songs of the Week: Gurdip: My Baby Left Me Justin: She Thinks I Still Care

Elvis Presley died on this date 42 years ago. We salute the "King" with one of his most-Southern songs. The SEC releases its preseason team and it's loaded with Alabama Crimson Tide players. Also, food is on a lot of Southerners minds as we sort through the fun on "Hashtag Hullabaloo."
August 1969 — Humble Pie — “As Safe as Yesterday is” Wayne presents this incredible album featuring both Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton on vocals and guitar. It is easy to see how Humble Pie was such a powerful - but underrated - rock band at the end of the 60's. Their debut album “As Safe as Yesterday is” was a UK release, and remains surprisingly hard to pin down in genres with its mix of pop, rock, and blues - it was even one of the first albums to be described as “heavy metal.” Let's take a look at this groundbreaking album and see for ourselves how we would describe it. “Stick Shift” Peter Frampton wrote this psychedelic-leaning song, which was the second track on the album. Frampton was 18 years old at the time, and this was his second band. “Bang ” This rocking piece leads off side two of the album. Steve Marriott wrote this blues laden, almost southern rock track. By the way, the origins of the phrase "humble pie" are from a peasant's dish of deer innards, though now it is more similar to the phrase "eating crow." “As Safe as Yesterday Is” This lengthy title track is one of Wayne's favorite. Frampton's vocals are prominent on this song. Frampton would leave the group in 1971. The drum work is reminiscent of The Who, with moments that sound like Robert Plant and Jethro Tull. “Natural Born Bugie (Woman)” This one is very similar to southern Rock, which is interesting given the UK origins of the band. "Looking like the cover of a 20-dollar magazine." Steve Marriott tried to revive Humble Pie in 1991, and had gotten together with Frampton about it when he tragically died from a cigarette fire in bed. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “The Pusher” by Steppenwolf The motorcycle cult classic "Easy Rider" was released in 1969, and produced or inspired a number of songs popular at the time, including this very dark blues riff. STAFF PICKS: “Marrakesh Express” by Crosby, Stills & Nash Brian's staff pick was inspired by Graham Nash's trip to Morocco. Nash rode the train from Casablanca to Marrakesh, moving from first class on down to the lower class cars, encountering different types of people and situations along the way. “One” by Three Dog Night Rob's staff pick starts with a beat that was inspired by the busy signal on a phone line. This song made it to number 5, and was Three Dog Night's first gold record. “Polk Salad Annie” by Tony Joe White Bruce's staff pick takes us to backwoods Louisiana for some swamp rock, and a "poke sallet" - a dish of cooked greens made from a common weed in the southern U.S. Elvis Presley would make this popular as a staple on his tours. “Questions 67 & 68” by Chicago Wayne's staff pick hearkens back to the first album from The Chicago Transit Authority - known as Chicago after the governmental organization sued them. LAUGH TRACK: “A Boy Named Sue” by Johnny Cash We finish off this podcast with Johnny Cash's humorous song about a boy who had to grow up with a decidedly feminine name.
Singer/songwriter Tony Joe White passed away on October 25th at the age of 75. A singular artist who will never be replaced, White created an entire genre of music all his own, Swamp Rock. A purist in every sense of the word, he even recorded his latest album in a horse barn.Tony Peters had an opportunity to talk with White just a few months ago, on the eve of the release of his latest album, Bad Mouthin'. Much of the interview centers on the stories behind the songs on the record - many of which are tributes to the artists that influenced him over the years. He also tells us the stories behind his two most-famous songs - "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia," which Brook Benton took to the top of the charts. White also recalls being asked to join Elvis Presley on tour and what a thrill that was.We also found some bonus interview footage where he discusses his role in a recent movie by Shelby Lynne. Join us as we pay tribute to Tony Joe White.

He recorded his new record in a horse barnCall it swamp rock, or whatever you want, but Tony Joe White has created a style of music all his own and he’s parlayed it into a career that’s lasted over 50 years. He hit the top 10 in 1969 with “Polk Salad Annie,” and penned the soulful ballad “Rainy Night in Georgia,” first made famous by Brook Benton, but has been covered by countless performers. He’s worked with everyone from Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton to Jerry Lee Lewis and Joe Cocker. His latest album is stripped-down affair called Bad Mouthin’ from Yep Roc records.White talks about the record that inspired him to start writing songs of his own. Plus, what it was like not only having Elvis Presley record three of his compositions, but also getting the opportunity to hang out with The King backstage.
Louisiana native Tony Joe White brought a sound straight from the bayou to the thriving late 60s soul scene, penning several signature cuts not only for himself but other artists- namely "Rainy Night in Georgia" for Brook Benton. One of those other big cuts, his immortal backwoods tale "Polk Salad Annie," is featured on this 2nd podcast themed episode about first names featured in song. This is the 2nd official podcast episode of 2018 here on the Sound & Groove Podcast. It's long overdue but no need to worry, as I've pledged another 4 episodes yet to come throughout this calendar year. This is the 2nd in a 2-part theme on songs featuring first names in the title. As in, songs that mention a person's name like Steve or Martha or Rick or Emily (none of which I've actually used! But you get the picture). So check out some of my favourite tracks that fit with the motif I've come up with this time around.
Elvis' 32nd movie, "Elvis: That's The Way It Is," showcases the King of Rock 'n' Roll's Summer Festival in Las Vegas in August 1970. The film documents Elvis and his band's rehearsals, and features concert footage with hits like "Polk Salad Annie," "Tiger Man," "I Just Can't Help Believin'" and "Suspicious Minds." Learn fun facts about the documentary and hear from Elvis fans who share their favorite moments.
Billy Swan is a legendary artist, musician, songwriter and producer who’s musical fingerprints are all over the musical map including some of the most influential records ever made. His record of “I Can Help” was a big hit for Swan in 1974 and was later recorded by Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. He’s also produced Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie” and has played in Kris Kristofferson’s band for many years. Donnie Fritts makes a surprise cameo halfway through the show.
