Everybody has a story to tell. Once Upon A Time In The Muirton is a collection of memories gathered and told by the people of Muirton in their own voice and in their own style. These podcasts capture the oral history, spoken by the people who lived, worked, played, laughed and cried in a 20th century housing scheme. Inevitably, memories being what they are, mean occasional mistakes on names, dates and locations will be made. But every story told is done with the best intentions
Once Upon A Time In The Muirton
Welcome to our wrap up of the year. 2023 has had plenty of great memories and a few sad moments with the loss of some auld Muirton Bairns. Thank-you to everyone who supports our podcast by taking part, listening and sharing the stories of Once Upon A Time In The Muirton. Your stories are important, deserving to be told and heard. We are looking forward very much to more of the same next year. Wishing you all the happiest of Christmas with peace and love for 2024. Our latest guest is the wonderful John McCole. The beginning of this episode is a 4 minute recording of a phone call with John recalling a memory with his mum before you get to the main episode which is another belter. John has lived in many places around the world including America, Germany and now Australia is home. However his formative years are rooted in The Muirton from a new born in 1963 until the family moved to another part of Perth in 1971. He tells the story of how his mum and dad as youngsters, traveled to Scotland from Ireland looking for work and eventually ended up in Perth. As the family grew the need for a bigger home eventually led them to 22D Ainslie Place in 1963 and John was born just a few months after. John has many vivid memories from when he lived in The Muirton and he still has the same friends today that he made as a boy over 50 years ago. John's humour and fondness for The Muirton is infectious in this episode and we're confident you'll be smiling and laughing along with us as you watch or listen. Happy Listening, Enjoy. Dunks & Barney
Welcome to episode 26. We had the pleasure of being with long time friends Steve McKechnie, Tony Quinn and Mark 'Sykes' Sandeman. They have known each other since the 1960's and had plenty of anecdotes to share. Stories of Corporal punishment, dirty protests and sex education. And that is just in the first 30 minutes
In this third part of our school trilogy the kids are now in Riverside Primary. Dunks and me had the pleasure of hearing the kids share there first thoughts of the new school and talk about their first few days experiences at Riverside Primary. Thanks again go to Mrs Gibb for facilitating this session and making it all possible. Naturally, a huge thanks go to the kids that took part: Holly, Sasha, Alex, Murray, Fraser, Ruben, Ivy, Harper, Mia, Lucy, Marsellina, Nicole and Sophia. You have all been brilliant. We've captured an important moment in time for Perth. The closure of two iconic schools with over 160 years of educating kids between them. That's a load of emotions and memories. Now it's the time of Riverside Primary to create new memories for today and generations to come. Good luck to everyone involved. Happy Listening, Enjoy. Dunks and Barney
Welcome to this, second part of our school trilogy. This time we have gone outside of our usual stomping ground and find ourselves in North Muirton, a scheme built in the late 1960's early 1970's and the Primary school opened in 1977. 46 years later the decison was made to close North Muirton and Balhouise Primary, bringing pupils from both schools together in a new modern primary called Riverside. Which you will hear a little more about in part 3. With every podcast it is made possible because of the people who take part, thank-you very much to Sophia, Rubin, Harper, Lexi, Lily, Holly, Harper, Kimberley, Ollie, Mason, Ethan, Millie, Isabella and Steph, Marie and Mandy, you were all brilliant. It was a great pleasure hearing memories of their time at North Muirton Primary and a few things the kids think will be the same at the new school. One thing that came through is the fondness for the school is just as strong in North Muirton as it is for those of us that went to Northern/Balhousie Primary. Bringing together two communities in a new space means new memories being created together which can be looked back on in years to come. Happy Listening, Enjoy. Dunks and Barney
Listen to voices of of the kids as they share a few thoughts just a few days after their experience of the newest Primary School in Perth Riverside Primary School, North Muirton.
Hello folks, here's a little audio trailer for upcoming episode... with Tony Quinn Steve McKechnie and Mark Sandeman - it was a great catch-up a few weeks back and the full episode will be with you very soon... Cheers, Dunks and Barney
The time has come - after 115 years Northern District / Balhousie Primary School has closed it's doors for the last time as a school. We have had the pleasure and the privilege of having regular access to the school over the last 18 months or so. Originally named due to it's location on the Northern edge of Perth. 30 years later families began to move into a new local authority housing scheme called The Muirton. Thousands of kids have gone through the iron gates and this episode you get to hear from some of the last ever kids to be able to say they were pupils at Balhousie Primary school. This episode is in two parts - first you will hear from Lianne Gibb who was principle teacher at Balhousie through transition. Lianne shares her thoughts from a teachers perspective of what Balhousie means and what goes into getting kids, parents and teachers ready for the new school in North Muirton. (which is a fabulous new education space called Riverside Primary). Then you get to hear from the kids - thank-you to Julia, Lucy, Marselina, Nicole, Oliver, Meah, Murray, Sasha, Alex, Fraser and Harry. They shared some of their favourite memories of the school and thoughts on going to the new Primary in North Muirton called Riverside I was also joined by friend of the Podcast and previous guest, Brian Mcarthur, we shared a little of our memories when it was called the Northern. It's been an absolute pleasure to have spent time at the school and for us to be involved closely in it's final months and days. Happy Listening, Enjoy. This is a live recording straight from the gym hall of Northern District / Balhousie Primary school on the morning of Saturday 25th of February. The school has served the community since 1908 closes this year and the Open Morning was an opportunity for auld pupils to visit and walk the corridors one last time. The school put on an amazing display with photographs and artifacts available for people to look through as well as being able to explore the building. It's fair to say that it was an amazing turnout with generations of auld pupils coming from far and wide. There was even a live stream for those unable to make it which was watched by people as far afield as New Zealand. Proving how important community, childhood and education are in peoples lives. As a primary school it had 20 classrooms. There were a couple of outbuildings which operated as classrooms, dining hall, changing space for the lollipop folk and eventually storage before being demolished. In addition St Ninians Primary School on Dunkeld Road was used as the Annexe for the Northern. Class sizes regularly exceed 33+ pupils and at times there would be 3 primary classes for each year - illustrating just how many kids attended the school from The Muirton, Hunters, Tulloch, North Muirton and other surrounding areas. (Tulloch Primary was built late 1960's, North Muirton Primary was built in the mid 1970's) Auld acquaintances were reconnected as people stopped and shared memories, some we have captured in this audio and there will also be video content available later in the year of a few folk sharing memories. Many thanks to Annabelle Burns, David Scott and Lianne Gibb for making it all possible. Happy Listening, Enjoy. This is a lovely poem that LIz Lamond has written remembering her times at Northern Primary School. The school had an Open Morning on the 25th of February which Dunks recites live. The school, renamed Balhousie Primary, is due to close this year and a fuller podcast from the Open Morning is in the edit room being readied for your listening pleasure
This Episode is Dedicated to the memory of Steven Manattini First of all the Intro is in the car – so there is a bit of background noise – sorry about that. And Barney fecked up the edit and deleted 90 minutes of content. Doh! However he got to meet Arthur again and get some more stories from his time in Muirton. You get to hear sounds of Muirton today as they blether for a while at the spot where Arthur lived and Arthur talks a little more about his good friend Steven Manattini. Arthur grew up at 9F Ainslie Place. Living there from 18 months old to his late teens. His mum and dad both lived in The Muirton as youngsters. So his roots go deep. Arthur would joke that his great pal Steve Manatinni who lived in Dunkeld Road wisnnae a real Muirton boy as his address didn't have a letter after the number like proper gadgies :-) Arthur tells his stories with great fondness for The Muirton and he has captured many photographs over the years. Including the last Saint Johnston game at Muirton Park and poignantly he filmed his old home being demolished in 2009. Arthur has a lovely way of telling his story and we know you will enjoy this latest episode of Once Upon A Time In The Muirton. Happy Listening, Enjoy! Dunks and Barney https://youtu.be/kHAI5szXKr0 What is Perthes' disease? Perthes' disease is a condition affecting the hip joint in children. It is rare (1 in 9,000 children are affected) and we do not clearly understand why it occurs. Part or all of the femoral head (top of the thigh bone: the ball part of the ball-and-socket hip joint) loses its blood supply and may become misshapen. This may lead to arthritis of the hip in later years.
Arthur Rodgie lived at 9F Ainslie Place for 17 years. The full podcast covers many memories and takes you on a journey from the 1960's to the day Arthur filmed the demolition of his home. This is a little film clip of that experience. Happy viewing. Enjoy. Dunks & Barney
Welcome to the last episode of 2022. This is Dunks and Barney signing off with our final episode. We hope you enjoy as we have a bit of banter - washed down with tequila and beer :-) This year has been amazing for Once Upon A Time In The Muirton. Listening numbers continue to grow, the work with the Museum has been a great success, a brilliant creative writing workshop and involvement with the final months of Balhousie / Northern Primary school just some of the highlights. Thank-you to every single one of you for being a part of Once Upon A Time In The Muirton. We hope Christmas has been amazing and that 2023 brings you all health and happiness! 2022 was a big year for our wee podcast and we aim to make 2023 even bigger. Slàinte Mhath Dunks and Barney
Thank-you for choosing this latest podcast. You may recognise the surname Armour. Albert is the older brother of Kathleen and younger brother of Leta from episode 17. It is important to note that this is our very first international podcast - Albert in Western Australia and Kathleen was on the Eastern side while we recorded from the Fair City of Perth. The family moved to 95B Dunkeld Road in 1938 - Albert was only 4 months old, not much older than the new Muirton Housing scheme. Albert has outlived the bricks and mortar of the place he fondly called home and in this episode he shares his memories as a bairn during WWII, his experiences of The Perth Panthers Ice Hockey and Saint Johnstone's highs and lows at Muirton Park. Both of which were only yards from his family home. You'll hear stories of Alberts first job as delivery boy for a local butchers, how his brother taught him to dive at the local baths. You'll also get to hear about The Original 'hand of god' goal and much, much more. These stories are shared by Albert and Kathleen with warmth, fondness and as always with our guests, plenty of humour. It has been an absolute pleasure to spend time with 3 members of one of the original Muirton families and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we have had recording it. Happy Listening. Enjoy. A very warm welcome to our latest podcast that shares life from a housing scheme in Muirton. Like all of our episodes this is a very special listen. Possibly the most personal yet, as it features one of your hosts. Dunks and his mum Marlene. ***WARNING*** This episode does have reference to domestic violence, substance abuse and other sensitive topics. At the start of this episode you'll hear friend of the podcast John McLiesh read a poem he has written after we had Creative Writing workshop with renowned author Natalie Jayne Clark https://twitter.com/nataliejayclark - poetry amd prose are really important to helping tell the story of life in Muirton. Our intro lasts about 20 minutes before you get to hear our main guest. Marlene Duncan. Marlene was born in 1937 and moved to Ainslie Gardens in Muirton in 1962/3. Marlene has had a rich tapestry of a life. Moving to Muirton from a hostel with few material belonings and a bagful of tenacity and independence. This episode covers the life of a single mum and you'll hear about Marlene's tenaciousness and strength not to be defeated or accept what the society of the time deemed to be acceptable. Marlene is a lady of humour, straight talking and has the temperment of a lioness where her family is concerned. You will love the laughs and honesty Marlene shares as her and son Dunks chat about life in a scheme called Muirton. Happy listening and Enjoy Follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/275795401238996/ Follow us on Twitter @TheMuirton1
Hello and thank-you for joining our latest podcast. This time we had the pleasure of spending time with sisters Kathleen and Leta Armour. Kathleen lives in Australia now and was in Perth visiting her older sisters Leta, 92 and Betty who is 100. Their growing family moved from 3 Hawarden Terrace in Perth to 95B Dunkeld Road in 1938. Which is the very beginning of the homes in Muirton being occupied. Not only that their grandfather James Macgregor was the Clerk of Works for Muirton and other building projects in and around Perth. Leta was 8 when they moved to Dunkeld road with 3 brothers and 2 other sisters. Kathleen is the youngest of the family and was born a few years later in 1944 and lived there until she got married. Kathleen and Leta will take you on a journey from the early days of Muirton up to the 1970's. We also had the privilege to film Kathleen and Leta for the documentary we are putting together and David took part in the conversation in the first part of this episode. This is an important episode as it takes us right back to the beginning of Muirton and we believe you'll enjoy the stories Kathleen and Leta share. Happy Listening, Enjoy. Hello everyone, sorry it's taken a wee bit longer than planned to get this latest podcast out for your listening pleasure. We're sure you'll agree after a listen it's worth the wait.
Welcome to this latest episode with our special guests, brother and sister John and Gail (Mclean) Ferguson. Dunks and Fergie are great friends and share many, many memories from being young boys and continue creating new memories today. Fergie and Gails family have a long history in Muirton - with their granny living there from the 1940's. This episode starts of with John and Gail talking about the encyclopedia's their dad bought and how they were a feature as they were growing up and for future family generations. You'll hear about how the Ferguson's moved from Birnam to Perth to live in Malvina Place. Stories of school days. growing up in The Muirton and as kids just wandering around creating their own entertainment until the lights come on. Their mum and dad had a clear influence on them and there is a bit of a theme that runs through this episode of the importance of family life living in The Muirton. Happy Listening. Enjoy. Dunks and Barney
When we first started Once Upon A Time In The Muirton we had no idea what to expect. 12 months on we have been blown away by everyone's support and generous feedback - whether you have invited us into your homes to hear and record your stories or you have been one of our many listeners giving us encouragement to keep going we thank you all. Thank-you, thank-you, Thank-you. This episode started out as an Intro for our latest guests, brother and sister, John and Gail Ferguson. But in our usual free-flowing style it's turned into something a little different. Have a listen while we talk about our memories of the last 12 months with a little snippet from each of those episodes thrown in as little extra. The episode which follows this is with John and Gail, which was another brilliant night spending time hearing and sharing stories of The Muirton. Happy Listening, Enjoy. Dunks & Barney
In our latest episode we spent time with Mandy Winton, her husband Jimmy Malloch and Jackie Hutchison nee Wooderson. Mandy's dad, Gerry, had the bakery in the row of Dunkeld Road shops during the 60's and they lived above the shop. We hear so much from Mandy, Jimmy and Jackie. Stories about the shops, growing up as kids in Muirton, memories of Christmas's long past, and guising. We hear a bit about Jackie's dad who was known as the Badge Man and so much more This is another episode where it was an absolute pleasure to sit and listen to folk who lived in Muirton, vividly recalling their time in The Muirton. We're sure you will enjoy this episode as much as we have putting it together. Happy listening. Enjoy. Dunks & Barney

10-4 for a copy, Cmon! Sitting here in the Old Rio Grand. We have a treat for you listeners. We have had the pleasure of spending time with Maureen Hill nee McManamon and some of her wonderful family. Maureen's mum and dad met after they traveled to Scotland in 1939. They lived in Saula and Blainaskill, County Mayo, not knowing each other, even though they were in villages just a few miles apart. They soon met and found their way to Perth. As a 10 year old Maureen and her family moved to Ainslie Place in 1953 from The Friarton. Maureen later married and moved to her own home in Ainslie Gardens, where she brought up Stevie and Graham spending 30 years in The Muirton. From the very start laughter fills this podcast and we're sure you'll smile and laugh as you listen to these stories. Happy Listening, Enjoy. Dunks and Barney
Welcome to Once Upon A Time In The Muirton. Recently we had the pleasure of sitting with 3 Auld Muirton Bairns - Lizzie Lamond, Gooey Mcgrath and Jimmy Duncan (Dunk's big brother). Before we knew it 4 hours had passed and it was time to go. We have edited this episode to a little more than 2 hours - it could have been more :-) and we hope however you choose to listen, you get to hear the whole episode - whether in one sitting or a few. There are plenty of stories and laughs shared by our 3 guests, who have been friends for over 50 years. Friendship is the underlying thread that runs through this episode. Which, we think, a place like The Muirton creates an unbreakable bond between people who have shared experiences as young kids, through their teenage years and growing up into the folk they now are. You'll hear chat about the neighbours, chip pea busters, The Rag and Bone Man, the Waterworks Well, Canadian ice hockey players, penny for the guy, Jimmy Duncan even remembers the phone box number on the corner of Ainslie Gardens and Balhousie St. And so much more. Happy Listening. Enjoy. Welcome to our latest episode of Once Upon A Time In The Muirton with our very special guest Tommy Campbell. Tommy is a very well kent face in Perth and across the Scottish Football scene. He shares stories of how his family were decanted from tenements in the town's Pomarium Street to Muirton in the late 1950's. We go further back in time to when Tommy's dad, left Ireland as a 14 year old, came over to Scotland, like so many Irish families, to find work and send the money back home to County Mayo. You'll hear Tommy talk about being at some significant and historical events - The Beatles playing the Caird Hall in Dundee on 20th October 1964, Celtic winning the European Cup in Lisbon 25th May 1967, The Rolling Stones free gig at Hyde park July 5th 1969 and the terrible tragedy that occurred at Ibrox near the end of the old firm game, on January 2nd 1971. Tommy tells a good story and and has plenty stories to tell. So, Tune in, Turn on and enjoy! In the intro to the original episode https://anchor.fm/barnaby-black/episodes/Mr-Softee-a-sneak-rocket-attack-and-the-Shah-of-Persia-e171a82 Dunks and me talked about sharing what Robin had told us following his and Roy Benson's heroics stopping a robbery at knife point. The story didn't end with the successful detaining of the robber, or even the well deserved recognition Robin and Roy received. A year later Robin shares how the incident led to him being involved with the emergency services one more time. Happy Listening. Enjoy. Dunks & Barney
Dear Listener, join us on our latest episode as we take a step back into our school days. The Northern District was one of the main primary schools that educated the children of Muirton (at least tried to), St Johns, St Ninians and Central District being some of the others. Opened in 1908, 1000's of children have walked through the school gates in the last 113 years. Like many schools of the 20th century it has served it's purpose and will be closed later next year. Before the final bell rings in the summer of 2022 we hope to be able to return to the school with other 'auld Northern/Balhousie pupils' to capture as many stories possible and give some insight into what a 20th and early 21st century primary school experience was like. Many thanks to Rachael Simms from PKC for guiding us around the school. Many thanks to Gordon Banks for allowing use of his poem 'Malvina Place' Northern District Primary School - Friends of https://www.facebook.com/groups/18598751092/ Auld Muirton Bairns https://www.facebook.com/groups/auldmuirtonbairns/ All the best, Dunks and Barney
An Evening with Aileen Myles! Most of us are lucky enough to have a loving family around us, growing up through our formative years that shape us into the adults we are. This episode is special, as it involves this very thing, a loving family, who asked Barney and I if we would come and sit with them, to reminisce about their time living in Muirton. The stories will be familiar to our listeners, yet are still unique to our guests. This is the magic of doing the podcast. We get to hear these familiar stories told in our friends and neighbours words. I will speak for both, Barney and myself, in saying what a pleasure it was talking with Aileen Myles. Aileen's son, Tam, got in touch and arranged for us to visit. Along with Tam, Jackie, Aileen's daughter, and her good friend Ann O'Donald made up the cast list for this episode of Once Upon A Time In The Muirton! As ever, we were delighted with our warm welcome, the stories told and memories remembered. We have stories of the Muirton community, that was so important to Aileen. A love of family, friends and music runs throughout this episode and, of course, some great stories are told into the bargain. So, without further ado, put the kettle on, get comfy and enjoy this latest episode of, Once Upon A Time In The Muirton! Dunks and Barney

In this episode our guest is Brian Mcarthur. Brian is well kent and one of the administrators of the popular Facebook page Auld Muirton Bairns which was created 'For anyone who was brought up or married into Old Muirton, the 'Pride of Perth'!' https://www.facebook.com/groups/auldmuirtonbairns/files Brian moved with his family to Muirton - 17A Ainslie Gardens - as a 4 year old in 1962... 1 of 9 - 3 sisters and 5 brothers. The stories Brian shares include his first memories of the day he moved into Muirton, the smell of the chippie, how he met his wife Maggie, originally from Ireland,in 1974 at The Corinna pub, school dinners, the baths, the berries, his taste in music and how taking a short cut home after a night at the Tay Motel he got caught on a chain-link fence ...sobered him up pretty quickly.... The photograph accompanying this episode is Brian with all his brothers, sisters and one of his nieces. Happy listening, Enjoy. Dunks & Barney
Welcome to our 4th episode - in two parts - of Once Upon A Time In The Muirton. You are in for a real treat. We had the pleasure of meeting Davina Bruce nee Taylor who lived in The Muirton with her family as a 3 year old in 1948 up until she left in the mid 1960's. Her memories of the queens coronation in 1953, how her dad gardened for Lady Watson-Watt (The Mother of Radar), trips to the Steamie. You'll hear when she met the Beatles as an awestruck teenager... Davina also shared her memory of the tragic 1974 explosion that happened in what was her former home - 76D Malvina Place. We have kept this recollection in the audio and hope we have done so in a respectful way to the family and all concerned. We must thank a good friend of ours, Ian Holden, for introducing us to his Aunty Davina and you will hear his voice throughout. Happy Listening & Enjoy. Dunks & Barney

In this episode you will hear the voice from one of Muirton's most well kent people over the last 50 years - Pena Rylance. In 1962, speaking only Italian, Pena left her home village of Contursi Terme, in the province of Salerno, south-western Italy. Arriving in the middle of a snowy Scottish January winter. Pena moved to 70D Malvina Place in 1971 and lived their until 1994/95 moving to Stanley Crescent where she is today. Pena worked at Strathallan School as a cook - where she was 'taught' some of the more fruity words of our language as she began to learn English. She met Jimmy Rylance who would walk from Perth to the Strathallan School to see her (that's a 16 mile round trip). Some 18 months later Jimmy and Pena were married in 1964. Rosa, Peter and Robert were born over the next few years 1965, 1966 and 1969. We hope you enjoy this episode as Pena shares some of her memories. Ciao, Dunks and Barney
As we are in the middle of the Euros football tournament, Barney and I thought we should do a short episode on football in the Muirton. We made reference in the first episode that football was a big part of our lives growing up playing in the streets and back greens of Muirton. I invited two old friends, John McLaren and Steve Banks, to come and have a chat with me about their memories of football and Muirton. As is the case, when chatting to people, their stories come flooding out and we end up talking about so much more than what we set out to discuss. In this episode the chat moves from memory to memory and occasionally football does get talked about as we walk past the Artisans Golf Club, on the North Inch and up to the Hanging Tree, and the field where we played many a day. John brought two photos from our Primary seven year at Northern District, the football team and the cricket team (I told John we were not going to talk about cricket but, if you listen, he cant help himself). In the photo of this episode - John is fourth from left back row. Steve is second from right back row. I am second from left front row. This chat with John and Steve brought so many memories back for me, I hope it does the same for you. Dunks and Barney
Everybody has a story to tell. Once Upon A Time In The Muirton is a collection of personal memories gathered and told by the people of Muirton in their own voice and in their own style. In this Pilot Episode we take you on a walking tour around the streets of Muirton as it is today in 2021 - recalling how it was when we lived here, through the late 60's to mid 80's. Follow us as we walk and talk, retracing the steps we took many years ago. You'll hear from Dunk's mum and an unplanned blether with Dave Findlay and his wife Janette, which could have filled this whole episode. Inevitably, our auld memories being what they are, mean occasional mistakes on names, dates and locations have probably been made. What we have recorded we hope is heard as it is intended - with great affection and pride having walked the streets of The Muirton. All the best, Dunks & Barney
