Richard Linklater's "spiritual successor" to Dazed and Confused struggles to inherit the mantle, we think. I can't tell what my favorite part of this episode is. Is it when Andy forgets McReynolds's name and describes him as "jacked up Weird Al with a bowl cut"? Is it when Winston strengthens the connection between Willoughby and Wooderson by noting that Matthew McConaughey also starred in Failure to Launch? Is it when Andy--quite appropriately--reads the poem "Pitcher," by Robert Francis, into the record? Listener, you decide!

Dazed and Confused is flat out a classic. Focusing on a group of wayward teens in 70s Austin, Texas, it somehow remains one of the most relatable looks at the high school experience. Sure, some things don't really translate to the present—the hazing, for example—but few movies have captured the essence of what it's like to feel stuck, even though your whole life is still in front of you. One of the reasons it remains so beloved is its eccentric cast of characters and the budding stars who played them. Dazed and Confused has a cast stacked with actors and actresses on the cusp of fame. From Ben Affleck to Matthew McConaughey to Parker Posey, it helped usher in the next phase of Hollywood stars. And, for some—like McConaughey's Wooderson—their characters in Dazed and Confused are recognized as a seminal role in their filmography. Few movies are as quotable, engaging, and culturally relevant as this, so it's no wonder it remains so prevalent in the cultural zeitgeist.   Now, sit back, grab your go-to high school brew, and air raid! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are paddling freshmen and getting ready to party at the Moon Tower! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – It was the last day of school in 1976, a time they'd never forget... if only they could remember! (00:00) Lingering Questions – The Double Turn Podcast signs the commitment pledge, and then we discuss which character would be the best hang. School's out for summer! That's our theme for this month, and we're kicking it off with the 1993 cult classic Dazed and Confused, traveling back to the last day of school in a Texas town in 1976. We discuss the film's incredible soundtrack, which gives the story its structure and mood and opened us up to a whole lot of new old music when the film came out. We also talk about the stacked cast of mostly unknowns who have since become household names (especially Matthew McConaughey, whose portrayal of Wooderson made him an instant icon), the importance of a car to teenage freedom, toxic nostalgia, 70s fashion's resurgence in the 90s (and in Georgia's heart, forever), Richard Linklater's approach to authenticity and character-centered storytelling, and the elusive pursuit of teenage coolness. The party may be shut down at Pickford's house, but come on down to the moon tower and join us for the first beer bust of the summer. And if you haven't followed us on your favorite podcast platform, it'd be much cooler if you did!

Today's guest gladly shares with us his experiences and knowledge as a physical therapist and biomechanist. He is an orthopedic clinical specialist who focuses on helping athletes with injury prevention and the founder of Long Run Physiotherapy, Ryan Wooderson. As a man who loves to spend most of his time outside during his younger years and became obsessed with sports, this led Ryan to begin his journey as a Physical Therapist and support athletes with their performance. He focuses on helping runners, and I ask Ryan his insights on runner's knee - whether running is the root cause of this issue or not. And he tells me the important thing that beginning and existing runners should know about it. Moreover, I gather from him the most common question he gets from runners related to heel striking. Do you think you have the same question as them? We also touch down on the importance of eccentric loading, the most common injuries for runners, and his thoughts on changing people's biomechanics, especially for young athletes. Watch the full video to learn more from Ryan and find out what's the first thing he does to celebrate his wins. If you're ready to take control of your health and optimize your training, InsideTracker offers a selection of plans that best suit your needs with a limited time 25% discount. Thank You PATH Projects! PATH Projects continues to be a great supporter of this podcast! I'm grateful for their partnership and want to share more about their products that I've been loving because they so durable and comfortable. PATH Projects is an online-only retailer of high-quality running gear and apparel. That means there is no retail markup, making their products quite affordable. In particular, I've just started wearing their 3” Sykes shorts and they're a little different from the 5” Sykes shorts (you can see those in action here). The material is thinner and lighter, which is perfect in a performance short, and they're obviously shorter. I'm not sure if my wife thinks they're too scandalous or loves them, but I'm wearing them constantly. PATH uses new technical fabrics, like the Japanese fiber called Toray Primeflex, to create award-winning apparel for endurance athletes. In fact, their Brim shorts and Tahoe base liner won Runner's World's 2018 Gear of the Year award. And the Pyrinees hoodie was named one of the best six sweatshirts for running in the cold by Gear Patrol. You know you'll be wearing the best when you select PATH Projects!

Alright, Alright, Alright! What better way to start this journey than to start at the very beginning?   Dazed and Confused (1993) is a coming-of-age film focusing on the hijinks of high school in 1976. From the star quarterback to the incoming freshmen nerds, Richard Linklater's film is widely regarded as a cult classic due to its authenticity and unbelievable cast. Among that cast is Matthew McConaughey playing his first on screen role as David Wooderson - the local in town who can't seem to move on from his glory days.    During our discussion, we sit down with Kelly Chappell - current owner of Top Notch Hamburgers in Austin, TX. Top Notch served as a filming location to many iconic scenes in the film. One of those scenes is where Wooderson delivered those famous words, "Alright, Alright, Alright". Kelly shares with us what to order as a first timer at Top Notch, some of his memories of the filming of Dazed, and a heartwarming tale involving McConaughey, the Oscars, and Kelly's niece. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Alright, alright, alright — it's time for the movie that put Matthew McConaughey on the map, turned Ben Affleck into a bully, and taught us all to sizzle like bacon. "Dazed and Confused" gave us a '90s indie movie look at 1976 with a drop-dead-gorgeous cast, hot muscle cars, and one-liners that made their way into all of our lives.   This episode taught the Shat Crew a lot about ass-paddlings, high school sororities, and Texas sports culture. And it reminded us of magical keggers, the older kids who helped us fit in, and what it was like to stay up all night with what felt like an eternity of life ahead of you.   Was Wooderson an ephebophile or a righteous dude? Was life in the '70s better than life today? What did Ash do with boys in the Louisiana swamps? Find out in this edition of Shat The Movies. Matthew McConaughey is an Academy Award-winning actor, but he is also a poet, philosopher, husband and father of three, global traveler, writer, occasional orchestra conductor, and passionate student of life.  Today he shares some of things he's learned about himself, others, and the world around him.  He discusses what he calls the "wild rodeo marriage" of his mom and dad, the moment when he became a man in his father’s eyes, and the long line of cattle rustlers, hustlers, and river boat gamblers in the McConaughey family tree.  He talks about landing his first role in Richard Linklatter’s Dazed and Confused, the "launchpad line" that opened up the character of Wooderson for him, and how an improvised line in a scene that wasn’t even supposed to take place became the catchphrase that has followed him ever since.  He recalls going from total anonymity to a celebrity in the span of just 48 hours, stepping away from Hollywood for 20 months at the peek of his success in order to land the kind of serious roles that he really wanted, and the long road to his Academy Award-winning performance in The Dallas Buyers Club.  Plus Matthew talks about healing our nation’s divisions, finding our tribe in our shared values, and whether he just might want to run for office one day.  Order Matthew McConaughey's new book Greenlights on Amazon, Audible, or wherever books are sold. As always we kick off with Geezedropping sharing and reacting to snippets of overheard conversation from strangers. We discuss the world of dating and relationships. How we met our other halves, which in Ed's case involved a hair cut mishap and setting himself on fire. We talk the trend known a 'foodie calls' where people only go on dates to get a free meal in a place they really want to visit. Of course this all leads us to a recent incest story (it's been awhile). Last time Ed was on we made up our own agony aunt which we try and again this episode. Being drunk, conversation sometimes take a political turn involving some recent horrific events but it's ok, we all have a sing song at the end.

This film literally screams in our faces about how dysfunctional the Wershe family really is, and reveals the true villain. Sam, of Movie Night Autopsy, talks about White Boy Rick. This week on Quick Ones.White Boy Rick is the true crime drama based on, get this, a true story. It follows a young man growing up in a dirt-poor Detroit neighborhood in the mid 80's. His sister is a junkie drug addict, two bad decisions away from being caught in a human trafficking ring, and his father is a hopeless gun runner, exploiting loopholes to make sales at gun shows (topical much?). Right away, the film literally screams in our faces about how dysfunctional the Wershe family really is, ending with grandma and grandpa having a yelling match with the single dad struggling to control his irate daughter. The "White Boy" Rick in question is played by Richie Merritt, making his on-screen debut. His dad, "White Boy" Rick, Sr., is of course, Wooderson from Dazed and Confused, and Bel Powley kills it as junkie sister, Dawn. While I'm on it, I have to say, the cast is incredible. Well, on paper anyway, and no one is bad in this film, but outside of the Ricks, Jr. and Sr., and to a lesser extent, the sister, no one else really has much to do. Then again, even if they did have more to do, when would they find the time to do it? The movie touches on many interesting dynamics, throughout, before quickly jumping to the next event, or sometimes, non-event. Something will happen and you think, narratively, this should be important later -- but then it never is. As for pacing, it's pretty rocky. That doesn't always have to be a bad thing, I loved Black Mass, another true crime story, but the events you choose to depict have to be relevant to one another in order to make sense on a narrative level, and to that extent, the film falls short. With a soundtrack that sounds more 70's than 80's, but a Detroit that looks as dirty and menacing as it should, the environment for the story is consistent enough, and generally framed very well. While the highs and lows don't make for great peaks or valleys, the third act has plenty to say about the justice system -- the true villain of the piece. Matthew McConaughey and Bel Powley give lights-out performances. Bruce Dern and Jenifer Jason Leigh couldn't be bad if they wanted to, and Jonathan Majors and Paperboi, from Atlanta, do the best they can with what little they get. Even with all that, there is this kid who comes around to tell Rick he's a "baby daddy" now, and that he needs to go do the right thing (somewhere in the middle). That kid is the real MVP. So while good, White Boy Rick is not great. The whole is not equal to the sum of its parts, but it was a good ride, and an interesting crime story with a heartbreaking end. I give this film 2 token black characters out of 5.Follow us on Twitter:@movie_autopsy@SamfashoM@onechadbeyond@AbstractGinger

Because when you are looking for experts on cool, look no further than three guys running a podcast out of a spare bedroom. And make sure you stick around until the end for a shocking cliffhanger that will leave your cliff hung (again, not Heathcliff). America may be in turmoil and chaos, but there's one thing you can always count on: Beautiful actors trying to make themselves look ugly on screen. Thus, this week, we discuss Matthew McConaughey's "Gold," in which Wooderson is bald and has a gut. Good for him. Then, in our reboot section, we dig into Christopher Nolan's breakthrough "Memento," a movie that is obsessively rewatchable. Also, in our quest to find a 1980s comedy that hasn't aged terribly, we give 1983's "Trading Places" a shot. We'll say this: It's better than "Fletch." We also wrap up Grierson's experiences at Sundance 2017. Timestamps: 12:39 "Gold" 25:30 "Memento" 41:10 "Trading Places" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@newrepublic.com. (We're doing a mailbag show after the new year, so send us questions.) As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Back in the comfortable confines of the CSG studios, Ross is back from assignment and ready to talk NASCAR. But lucky for most folks that will be listening, Nate and Jeff distracted him with plenty of NBA talk (90's era NBA a plenty). Free agency is upon the NFL and the Broncos added a couple key defensive players, unfortunately the guys only knew about one of them at the time of the recording. So, sit back and enjoy the show.
