A new campaign for a fair transition towards net zero kicked-off this month. Called Fairmiles, it calls on policy makers from government and the private sector to consider sustainability impacts on developing countries when pursuing carbon reduction strategies which seek to minimise so-called ‘food miles' particularly with regard to airfreighted produce. The campaign aims to engage key stakeholders in the retail, government and charity sectors to highlight the importance of maintaining crucial trade links with developing countries and to make recommendations for reducing emissions without marginalising vulnerable communities.“Climate change is real and demands an urgent and radical response if we are to adapt to the significant threat it poses to our planet. However, with increasing pressure on organisations to act, there is a growing risk that corporate net zero strategies that seek to reduce emissions by reducing imported or airfreighted food, end up alienating and negatively impacting economically less developed countries, to the detriment of livelihoods in rural communities,” said Simon Derrick, global head of sustainability of Blue Skies, one of the companies behind the new initiative.“The implementation of carbon reduction policies which target airfreighted fresh produce can disproportionately curtail opportunities for low-carbon agricultural products that support livelihoods in developing nations. This trade is a lifeline for millions of individuals in some of the world's most impoverished and vulnerable communities, thus underscoring the need for carbon reduction policies to attain climate justice.”Blue Skies supplies airfreighted fresh-cut fruit to retailers in the UK and across Europe, employing over 5,000 people in 10 factories spanning Ghana, Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, Benin and the UK. Its business model is built on the principle of adding value at source, which means that, wherever possible, fruit is cut, prepared, and packed in the same community that it is grown. This allows Blue Skies to return a higher margin to the communities that produce the fruit, and to harvest the produce at its optimal maturity, helping to ensure the best possible nutrition and flavour. The Fairmiles launch was attended by 15 organisations representing African fresh produce businesses, the air cargo industry, academia and the international development sector. In addition to raising awareness of the issue among key stakeholders and the public, it hopes to conduct research on the impact of air freighted produce; agree best-practice guidelines for the industry and translate its aims into an action plan with quantifiable targets. To create further awareness of the initiative as well as discussing the facts and figures and what is hoped to be achieved especially as we head towards the COP28 climate conference in Dubai late this year a number of group founders recently went on a Beanstalk Global Broadcast to discuss the initiative. On the Broadcast was:Dr Ebenezer Laryea - Associate Professor in International Sustainable Development Law at the University of Northampton and Chair of the University's Centre for Sustainable Business Practices.James MacGregor – development economist and author of the 'Fair Miles: recharting the food miles map' published in 2009 by Oxfam and IIED.Jodie Keane - Senior Research Fellow with the International Economic Development Group at the Overseas Development Institute. Alistair Djimatey - Public Affairs Manager at Blue SkiesSimon Derrick – Head of Sustainability at Blue Skies, a fruit manufacturer that airfreights prepared produce from Africa and South AmericaMax MacGillivray - Editor in Chief of Beanstalk Global

Whatever effect the naval blockade ultimately had on the outcome of the war, it of course did not succeed in bringing it to a swift conclusion the way people believed and Churchill implied it might. Gerry Docherty and Jim McGregor contend this was because it was deliberately porous on the level of bureaucracy. They describe this as a conflict between the Admiralty, who wanted to institute an effective blockade, and the Foreign Office, who did not. In contrast to the Boer War, where British actions are pretty hard to defend, in the First World War they look either virtuous, coming to the aid of neutral Belgium, or at worst defensive, acting to prevent a German dominated Europe. For a more critical take it seems we look outside of mainstream academia, to more independent historians. Hello and thank-you for joining our latest podcast. This time we had the pleasure of spending time with sisters Kathleen and Leta Armour. Kathleen lives in Australia now and was in Perth visiting her older sisters Leta, 92 and Betty who is 100. Their growing family moved from 3 Hawarden Terrace in Perth to 95B Dunkeld Road in 1938. Which is the very beginning of the homes in Muirton being occupied. Not only that their grandfather James Macgregor was the Clerk of Works for Muirton and other building projects in and around Perth. Leta was 8 when they moved to Dunkeld road with 3 brothers and 2 other sisters. Kathleen is the youngest of the family and was born a few years later in 1944 and lived there until she got married. Kathleen and Leta will take you on a journey from the early days of Muirton up to the 1970's. We also had the privilege to film Kathleen and Leta for the documentary we are putting together and David took part in the conversation in the first part of this episode. This is an important episode as it takes us right back to the beginning of Muirton and we believe you'll enjoy the stories Kathleen and Leta share. Happy Listening, Enjoy. More justices doesn't mean more justice. In this episode of Chapel Phil, Max Hazerjian tours the history of the US Supreme Court to examine when and how it can be expanded. After historical framing, Max argues that many other methods of court reform could be superior political and constitutional alternatives -- listen to find out why! The Climate Change Committee's Annual Report to Parliament calls for immediate and systemic change if we are to build a green recovery post Covid. Investment in the low carbon economy coupled with some bold thinking and decision making on land use, house building, infrastructure and behaviours provides a blueprint for a green future according to Baroness Brown of Cambridge (Deputy Chair Climate Change Committee) and environmental economist Dr James MacGregor. We discuss whether UK government actions match its policies and if we are ready for an almost certain 1.5 to 2 deg C rise in global temperature. James MacGregor, Managing Director at Bakamo Public, discusses the main narratives in social media conversations around Black Lives Matter in the UK, Turkey, and Hungary. We break down how key themes from the US protests are translated into these different national contexts, as well as how the online debate has evolved since the protests started.
In this episode, James MacGregor from The Vision House talks through the impact of social distancing restrictions on the camera rental market. Commercial rental turnover is a good indicator of the amount of in-progress advertising productions, with most medium to large sets requiring specialist camera and grip support to operate. The Vision House is one of the oldest players in camera rental market and in this two part interview, James reflects on the personal and professional impacts of COVID-19, ways of working under the new restrictions, and his outlook for the future of commercial production in a post-COVD world.

Above a little cafe in Hobart in 2015 James and one of his brothers spent a year testing and arguing about business ideas to pursue. Biteable was one of the first they thought of but being analytical, they wanted to exhaust the list before circling back and getting serious. Six months into it they brought on the third co-founder, a good friend, and raised $1.1m investment. A genuine SaaS (Software as a Service) business, Biteable allows people to create videos for ads, presentations and training on websites. Using a Freemium subscription model, paid plans start at $29 USD a month. This cast covers: From 10,000 customers to now 5 million in 5 years; Doubled customers every year; Have raised $3.4m AUD investment to date, all from Australia and now talking with US investors; James worked for Moo.com and BigCommerce, where he learnt will need capital to grow something large; Went with their hunch in 2015 that video was going to grow massively, tested many ideas and models before settling on Biteable; As the business grows roles change, need to keep ego in-check (yours and your co-founders); Org structure and job descriptions are super-important in fast-growth; Moved the three founders at the top of the org chart sharing day-to-day responsibility, to James being CEO and solely responsible to the Board for the performance of the business; Fundraising has been interesting, get honest feedback from potential investors then go back and fix those parts of the business for 6 months and back; Worked with a good mentor for two years who co-founded BigCommerce, he was able to help James change his perspective on what he can do; Had to work most on leadership and people stuff, but also had the most impact; Habit he recommends building as the leader is giving candid, direct feedback early and often; Most people don’t want to give feedback because it may hurt the receivers’ feelings, but most people want feedback and are very receptive; Hardest thing in business is navigating the uncertainty. Need to get comfortable with that and let go of opportunities a lot sooner; Number one tool to grow your business is Google AdWords. Set up first ad, went to bed and had 200 sales the next morning; and Would tell himself on day one is - all you are doing is solving a customers’ problems, so the only thing that matters is the customer. Does the China-NBA bust-up mean that the Chinese are falling out of love with US basketball - and US business in general? One thoughtless tweet in support of Hong Kong protestors by Daryl Morey, general manager of the Houston Rockets Basketball team, has kicked off a diplomatic storm, with Chinese TV stations cancelling the planned airing of NBA exhibition basketball games. It certainly reflects a much more prickly, nationalistic mood in China at a time when the country feels under attack from the US government's trade sanctions. Fenella Barber of China business consultancy Bao Advisory says it is typical of the cultural misunderstandings that still occur when Western businesses try to break into the country's gigantic fast-growing consumer market. But Andrew Coflan of geopolitical strategists Eurasia Group says the kerfuffle says a lot more about internal Chinese politics than the business environment, which Beijing is actually working hard to make more foreigner-friendly. Meanwhile journalist and businessman James MacGregor explains why so many US companies are thinking about exiting China - and it's not just because of the escalating trade war. We took the "studio" on the road with us to Hobart in Tasmania. Caught up James MacGregor, the founder and CEO of video animation startup Biteable. James is an outstanding entrepreneur demonstrating leadership, strong engineering, effective marketing, and tons of commercial hustle. Plus of course the essential ingredient - oodles of tenacity. Biteable is less than 4 years old and from its HQ in Hobart has build a worldwide user base of over 2 million customers. His story is a great one, and it feels like he is only just getting started!I didn't have my usual microphones with me for this episode, so not quite the richness of our usual productions.
This week we had the pleasure of speaking to James MacGregor, a man who’s been there, seen it and done it in the world of tech startups who is behind the brilliant online video-marketing tool biteable.com. Having worked for web startups and software companies for over ten years he decided it was time to create something himself, and with a bit of help from his brother who had been working on films with Peter Jackson, biteable.com was born. From a thousand users in year one, biteable now has over half a million users worldwide. We don’t need James to tell us that video marketing is on the up – we’ve had plenty of guests confirm this in recent times – but we can all benefit from James’ tips on video marketing: ** Most people access the web on their mobile now, so consider the small screen and potentially small attention span when producing your videos. ** Try and avoid making videos that are more than two minutes in length. ** Make the video look professional. Although we are in an era when it is easier to get away with making video that doesn’t have a high production cost, make sure you get the basics right. There should never be a shaky camera, for example. ** Don’t be scared of being blunt and controversial. There is no one else censoring it so you should use your creative license as best you can. ** Video marketing is a numbers game. Your content is more likely to go viral if you do more of it. It’s better to make five short videos then agonizing over one long one. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** How much you should plan content ** The power of templates ** What can be done in 10 minutes ** How important video is to the overall marketing mix Resources mentioned in this episode: ** James’ video website: http://www.biteable.com ** Facebook: facebook.com/businessbrainfood ** Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood ** Twitter: https://twitter.com/bfewtrell ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher It’s quite simple: if you don’t do video marketing then you will lose business, but the good news is it’s easier than ever to create quality video content. Understanding the inner workings of James’ website is a great starting point. Also, if you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that! Until next time, have a profitable day. Cheers, Ben Fewtrell (02) 9111 5000
