If you’re asking yourself this question, chances are-you are not (narcs normally can not actually see or understand that they are one). I do want you to really consider what the word ‘narcissist’ means to you though, and how it’s affecting you, and everything going on in your life. In today’s episode, I’m talking more about: Using labels when it comes to the narcissists in your life, or those who are on the narc spectrum How you’re affected when you’re raised by narcissistic parents My personal narcissist tendencies that have come through in my own life The different types of narcissist tendencies How you can have compassion for the narc in your life, but not be afraid to shine your own light and celebrate your wins too Tools and techniques you can use to work through and manage your narcissist tendencies No matter what kind of narc tendencies you have (whether it’s quite a few or hardly any), it’s great that you’re thinking about them (that’s the first step), and it’s also important to be aware of/find out what they are. You have to be willing to dig into them (even if it’s painful), but you also HAVE to have plenty of self-compassion, love, and patience with yourself, and give yourself time to do the work. This topic was actually requested by a listener, and I love getting to address important and much-needed topics like this one on the show. When you’re trying to figure out how to have compassion while also setting boundaries, it usually means you’re dealing with someone you love, like a family member or close friend. I know it’s not always doable to go ‘no-contact’ and cut all ties, and you may not want to, which is totally your choice too. In today’s episode, I’ll be talking more about: -Why it can be hard to have both compassion and healthy boundaries to keep you safe -What creates the situation that narcissism survivors have to deal with on a regular basis -The dynamic of having a narcissist mom in your life, and what your relationship may look like -How you actually can have appropriate compassion and empathy for your narcissist mom (or another narc in your life), while still keeping yourself emotionally safe -Why it’s okay to keep some relationships surface level, and not have a deep emotional intimacy in all of your relationships I want you to know (and please remember)-you can NOT save your narcissist mom emotionally and make her pain go away, even though you have been conditioned to believe that. The child-like instinct you feel to try and fix your mom is very powerful, but you don’t want to engage in that. If you’re doing things to keep her happy and she’s not doing the work to process her grief in appropriate ways, you’re just putting a bandaid on a bullet wound. It’s okay for you to feel how hard it must have been for the narcissist in your life by practicing empathy, understanding how tragic his/her life must have been, and also realizing it’s not YOURS to deal with. If you need help with feeling appropriate compassion for your narcissist mom (or whoever the narc is in your life), while still keeping yourself emotionally safe from anything that happens in that dynamic, I would be honored to coach you, and help you break the cycle for good! I’m really excited to bring on a wonderful person and one of my former clients, Bryan Brooks, for today’s episode. Bryan was a guest on my previous podcast, the ‘Get Yourself Back Podcast’, and at that time we were about halfway through working together. He’s back today to share the results he was able to achieve during our work together, and he’s actually achieved more than he ever thought possible. Bryan Brooks is an IT expert who owns his own business (he's been in the IT industry since 1997), and he’s a single dad. He spent several years married to a narcissist, and after going through a divorce, everything in his life suffered, and he was in a pretty dark place. He’s in a very different place now; his business is thriving, he’s the father to a brilliant 11 year old, and he even found the love of his life, and has built a healthy relationship with her. In today’s episode, we’re talking about: -Bryan’s life with his previous narcissistic relationship, and what his life looked like before coaching -How Bryan and I initially connected at a local networking meeting -My encouragement (and challenge) for Bryan to start putting himself out there and dating as much as possible -The tools Bryan learned and used from coaching to meet with and eventually form a romantic relationship with his now girlfriend (who he didn’t have to go far to meet) -Bryan’s advice for coming out of a narcissistic relationship, and then going on to find a healthy and loving relationship Bryan and I talked about some incredible things on this episode, and I couldn’t be more proud of the work he has done in his life since we first met. He really committed to coaching; he went to difficult places in order to change his thoughts and his mind, and he’s now reaping the rewards in his life. Magical things can happen when you work to shift the filter from ‘narc filter’ to ‘healthy person filter’. I want you to know what is TRULY possible when you show up and commit to doing the work, because it’s pretty amazing! The Narcissist Thought Trap

When you’ve been with a narcissist for so long, you deal with something called the narc brain, and it affects your habits and thought patterns. The narcissist thought trap then occurs, and it comes up all of the time in the work I do with my clients. It’s really one of those things that can slow you down, and you stay stuck in pain, and inaction. You’ve been in survival mode for SO long; the constant emotional and verbal attacks are keeping you from going after what you really want, and creating the amazing post-narc life you deserve. In today’s episode, I’ll be talking about: -How the narc brain (which is in a constant state of fight or flight) actually creates the narcissist thought trap -The 7 step process of how the narc brain keeps you trapped, and real-life examples of how this can look -How the brain is wired to avoid pain and stay efficient, no matter what -The constant pain a narcissist is in, and why they choose to inflict that pain onto others -What it looks like when you use narcissist tactics against yourself -The 3 steps for how you can actually get out of the narcissist trap-for good A really important reminder I want you to know is that emotional pain doesn’t actually come from your situation; it comes from your thoughts, and your interpretation of what’s happening in your life. Of course I know things won’t magically change if you just change your thoughts and are constantly positive (that’s not how it works), but it is vital to really look at your thoughts, and figure out what’s true, and what isn’t. When you find yourself in a situation with a narcissist and you’re continually playing the narcissist game just to survive, I don’t want you to blame yourself, and beat yourself up. Instead, I want you to have compassion for yourself (and a LOT of it), because you’ve been through so much. If you need help with any of this, this is the kind of work I do with my clients. The widely accepted thinking about divorce is that it’s going to be HORRIBLE and you’re going to suffer. Meagan Norris doesn’t accept that. Sure, there will be difficulties, and yes, there will be times that are uncomfortable. But divorcing someone that you do not want to be with anymore is the start of a beautiful new life. You just have to change your mindset. In this episode I talk with Meagan about how her divorce coaching (and her own experience with divorce) can help women (or men) get into an empowered space, where you control how you feel and act throughout the process. You create a vision of what your life will be like after divorce, and you ‘anchor’ yourself to that vision, and progress toward making it a reality. Don’t be held back by the fear of feeling uncomfortable or the objections you may face from your kids, parents, friends or community. You are the CEO of your life, and this step needs to happen – to become who you’ve always wanted to be, and to manifest the life you secretly dream of inhabiting. The Post-Narc Life podcast is hosted by Laura Bytheway, a life coach specializing in surviving and eventually thriving after narcissist abuse. In the podcast, and through Laura’s coaching, you will give yourself permission to get rid of the old you that was merely surviving, you’ll decide what you want your new life to look like, and then you’ll dig in to actually doing the work and use the tools you’ll need to build and sustain your new life. If you don’t say something specific or act a certain way, will they blame you for their sadness, depression, or pain? In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about relationships with narcissists and how they play that game. I’ll share a story about an anonymous client’s mother and how she is attempting to manipulate her adult children with the narcissist’s game, and how I coach people to extract themselves from these dynamics. I’ll also share some of my own personal pain around the suicide of my own mother, only a year and a half ago. I was not responsible, and I was not to blame for her action, but it took quite a while to work through the feelings of guilt and blame I placed on myself. You can decide how to react when a narcissist says or does something to ensnare you in the game. Welcome back to another episode! Today I announce The Invincible Mastermind - a six month group coaching program designed to transform you into an emotionally invincible person. We kick off with a retreat in Waco, and spend the next six months working together to deal with everything in the way of becoming who you want to be. To find out more go to https://www.bythewaycoaching.com/invincible-2021. Hurry, applications close Monday night, September 13th, 2021 at 11:59pm! The deadline is to make sure we have the numbers ready for catering and other services at the retreat. If you missed the deadline but still want to be part of The Mastermind, email me at laura@bythewaycoaching.com Today Debra and I talk about her transformation from a person who was terrified all the time of other people's negative emotion. She felt responsible for all of it, and couldn't stand it if someone wasn't perfectly happy. And now, she is totally free and so much more at peace, and we walk you through exactly how she did it and what it looked like. Bonus: we do a live coaching about an unexpected unveiling of a secret narcissist in her life. You'll get to witness in real time an unrehearsed coaching about Debra's thoughts about this person and how we help her manage "the cringe" among other emotions.
