But I do believe in some sort of higher power. I feel a lot of pressure from other people who have left the church to give that up, however, and I think that's part of the reason I'm hesitant to tell people I'm no longer a member—because I don't really know what I believe anymore. The stress response system is the emergency reaction system of the body and it's there to keep you safe in emergencies. It includes physical AND thought responses to your perception of various situations that show up in your life. When the stress response is turned on, your body releases stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol, which causes specific things to happen inside of you. It can make your heart pound, your blood pressure increase, and your breathing get faster. Your stress response system is a completely normal part of life...unless it is constantly getting activated because of past trauma or abuse. In this episode, Sandra discusses the body's response to stress and how you can tell whether or not these responses are normal and healthy, or creating problems in your daily life.
