Three Scorpio moon 9s come to you with insights from the astral plane to discuss dreams, the Enneagram, and the unconscious. It’s about to get creamy. Hosted by Kristen Oberly, Kaisa Jauhiainen, and Sammy Bernstein.
Continuing on the theories from the previous episodes of the Transcendent Function and the Collective, Sammy and Kristen share what happened when they combined the two in their own psychic and dream experiences. This episode gets at the heart of the ‘I AM', religious connections, being a part of yourself, being a part of the world, and the masks we all wear that inform us of what kind of God we are encountering daily.PLUGS:LAST CALL for your spot on John's retreat (MAY 23-25, 2025) at https://www.johnluckovich.com/experiencing-essence Subscribe/follow The House of Enneagram on podcasts or YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/@houseofenneagram
Sammy and Kristen have a casual discussion about what the ‘collective' and symbols from the collective could mean in dreams. They start to ponder what it means to be an individual within the collective, being impacted by events in the outer world and making choices in life. This discussion brings up personal dreams to reflect on and start the hosts on their journey in understanding how personality and the collective intermingle.PLUGS:Reserve your spot for John's retreat (MAY 23-25, 2025) at https://www.johnluckovich.com/experiencing-essence Attend Eva Rider's ‘The Alchemical Tarot' class online (MAY 10, 2025 - recording's will be available) athttps://reclaimingsoul.com/the-alchemical-tarot-workshop/ Subscribe/follow The House of Enneagram on podcast platforms or YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/@houseofenneagram
Kristen is joined by Enneagram teacher and author John Luckovich to talk about his upcoming retreat in New York City called ‘Experiencing Essence'. The two discuss what essence is, how to cultivate it, and the many ways we are already relating (or lacking relation) to this substance within us. Essence is the seed of consciousness at the core of our being. When we make efforts to be present, it is Essence that either shows up—or remains obscured. While everyone's Essence is unique, it expresses itself through nine fundamental qualities that shape the distinct character of each Enneagram type: Power, Harmony, Integrity, Love, Value, Depth, Insight, Truth, and Freedom. True growth requires direct connection with these qualities. Where the ego goes wrong is that we try to find Essence through the Instinctual Drives, confusing Being and Function. We will explore what it means to “live in two worlds”." - John LuckovichGet more information about this retreat and reserve your spot (MAY 23-25, 2025) at https://www.johnluckovich.com/experiencing-essence Buy John's book on the Instinctual Drives and the Enneagram at https://www.amazon.com/Instinctual-Drives-Enneagram-John-Luckovich/dp/0578784971/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=john%20luckovich%20enneagram&qid=1629613426&sr=8-3 Episode art by John Luckovich
Kristen and Sammy discuss Carl Jung's piece on ‘The Transcendent Function'. They read a few excerpts and describe how they see personality type impacting this method, but also how accessing this space allows the ‘machine' of type to be more regulated by its compensatory counterpart; the unconscious. Letting this theory be a part of the conversation with Enneagram type can give more flavor or color to our individual struggles, rather than just working with type as a description of qualities and behaviors.
Today, Sammy and Kristen discuss the appearance of animals in dreams and how they could be the messengers of our instinctual natures. The girls mainly focus on the objectivity an animal's nature can provide to our instincts, rather than getting stuck in the neurosis of the subjective personality's relationship to instinct. The many facets of self-preservation are discussed, as well as the different centers of intelligence in the Enneagram. Some personal dream examples are used to articulate the potential pivots of our autonomy and choices in life when we receive the message of a dream animal. The conversation also goes into the direction of imaginary worlds, oracles, and feminine initiation. To continue the idea of ‘Type Ensouled', Sammy and Kristen reflect on their own dreams and how they've correlated with their personality and life experiences. We use the power of stories and myth to amplify the purpose of our personal enneagram types. To be able to ‘catch the thread' of our human and soul path became a fun and interesting attempt to play with the creative energies that are present. “Storytelling is at the heart of life... In finding our own story, we assemble all the parts of ourselves. Whatever kind of mess we have made of it, we can somehow see the totality of who we are and recognize how our blunderings are related. We can own what we did and value who we are, not because of the outcome but because of the soul story that propelled us.” - Marion Woodman
Today we focus on the “soul purpose” or “soul perspective” of having an Enneagram type and instinct stacking. We talk about systems like the Akashic records and astrological natal charts and how it mirrors our personal type structure. All aspects of personality like our dominant functions and blindspots are looked at as a sort of contraction and expansion of the human experience. The tension of personality and soul are explored in archetypal and personal ways as we question our purpose, our suffering, and our creative expression as human beings. The three dream girls are back for a new ‘season', ready to explore the realms of the personality, the unconscious, and other strange things we experience as humans. Kaisa brings in her recent experiences with her life and dreams while on a break from the podcast, and the girls reflect on what they've enjoyed about the past ‘seasons'. They begin to dream up new ideas going forward with the pod, including other worlds, spiritual traditions, and forms of creative expression. Each host offers two of their favorite topics to start diving into in the new year, spiraling into many different thoughts and ideas that feel energizing and activating.
Kristen and Sammy discuss the results of their head center dream incubations, asking the question "What am I using to conceal my own personal void?” They discuss the enneagram and instincts as well as Jung's cognitive functions to understand where their fears are originating and revealing themselves through the symbols of the dreams. After a brief pause on recording and releasing episodes, Sammy and Kristen are back in the new year with a refreshing idea on the head center to help them dive back into the theoretical podcast game. Kristen talks about an experience she had that allowed her to have a personal resonance with the head center and the conversation inspires the hosts to discuss similar concepts or realizations on what head types or our own head centers are trying to avoid while simultaneously creating.
Today's discussion is on the possible symbols relating to the head center in dreams. We go through themes like the physical head, swords, medication, air, birds, video games, and more. Each idea is met with references to external resources, personal experiences, dreams, or examples to highlight where these symbols live in the head center. These dream symbols are not to be taken literally or be fully attributed to ‘the head center'; this is a way for us to be thinking creatively about our enneagram type and dreams.
To continue the topic of the head center, we discuss how metaphor can be a way to ‘open' us up to different narratives or perspectives. When bringing in the aspect of ‘play' to dreams, symbols can feel more autonomous and alive, giving us a chance to be impacted and moved by them. Kristen and Sammy talk about their own experiences ‘playing' and being fascinated by metaphor, tying in previous topics from the head center. Kristen also talks about a recent experience with a shift from looking at a dream in a flat way as opposed to a creative and metaphorical way. Resources; ‘The Ravaged Bridegroom' - Marion Woodman
This week we discuss Rudolf Otto's piece ‘The Idea of the Holy'. We use this written work as a way to talk about the limits of the head center, what could exist outside of those limits, and our human experience of glimpsing beyond those limits. We talk about personal examples of spiritual experiences or ego-awakenings to the rigid structure we keep ourselves under. Sometimes we feel fear, sometimes bliss, sometimes a mix of the two when a mental structure of reality falls and some unknown version of ‘truth' reveals itself. The process can be painful but rewarding.
Kristen & Sammy are back to tinker with the ideas of the head center. They talk about what constitutes a conscious or unconscious choice and how the ego might be ‘getting in the way' of its connection to the head center, animal nature, and divinity. They bring in different ‘maps' such as astrology, tarot, and philosophy to understand the depths of these topics like fate and free will. Resources; ‘The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages' by Paul Foster Case ‘Magic, White and Black' by Franz Hartmann Astrology Podcasts - ‘Nightlight Astrology' and ‘The Astrology Podcast'
Kristen & Sammy explore the idea of narratives and inner constructs created by the head center. They question what kinds of needs might fuel certain patterns of narratives and how early in life our constructs of reality even started to build themselves. The other centers are discussed as well, showing how these types of realizations don't happen in isolation. They bring in their own experiences, dreams, symbols, and ideas to try and understand the unconscious and conscious power of the creative mind when stuck in a narrative trance. It's spooky season, so the team decided to talk about nightmares since it correlates synchronistically with the head center. Kristen mainly takes the stage here with her history of nightmares and how it could have been helping her experience repressed fear and regulating her emotional health. They discuss how nightmares could be a direct way to experience all three instinctual centers. During this episode, we bring in individual dreams to talk about the neuroses of the head center. Our discussion helps us piece together all of the different components that become exposed through this process and paint a fuller picture of the head center's needs and narratives. Our personal experiences highlight the ways we are relating to reality and the attachments/connections we have with each other. We explore the ideas of superego, the pain/pleasure principle, trust/mistrust, escapism, addiction, and more. The dream girls reorient to the head center and what it could be conjuring up in the dream realm. They discuss the differences between instinctual fear and neuroses, and the ego/personality and the head center. Topics like the higher mind, fear, reality, narratives, and horror are all explored in relation to the head center and how we are orienting to ourselves and life. They bring in a few recent, personal dream examples to highlight how alive these ideas are in the unconscious. We bring in our personal dreams on the heart center to discuss how all of these recent discoveries with our hearts, image, and identity could be impacting us unconsciously. Kristen had a few fragments that they expand on for 20 minutes, and Kaisa's dream takes center stage by sparking a conversation on the personal versus collective heartbreak of reality and the environment. This conversation takes many turns into sadness, pain, inspiration, and humor. REMINDER TO SIGN UP FOR THE 8-WEEK COURSE BEFORE SEPT. 15! https://www.theenneagramschool.com/dreams-and-the-enneagram-class Today, Kristen and Kaisa explore the idea of what ‘identity' is, how it is seen by the ego, how it's perceived or talked about in the ‘collective', what even is the ‘collective', and how confusing all of this stuff is. They discuss personal examples, where they are currently, and how this material is allowing them to change the way they see themselves and the world. “The self divided is precisely where the self is authentically located... We all have identity crises because a single identity is a delusion of the monotheistic mind... Authenticity is in the illusion, playing it, seeing through it from within as we play it, like an actor who sees through his mask and can only see in this way.” - James Hillman
Kristen and Kaisa enter the public realm for the first time in a live recording of their recent dream webinar. They talked about their upcoming course that is now open for registration, what they're excited about and how the structure will be, and answered questions from the participants. Kristen and Kaisa take over the podcast in this episode to talk about the absolute importance of creating soul, and how you can be a part of a community in that process during their upcoming webinar and workshop! They reflect on their connection with their psyche and working with their dreams, and how they plan to allow that space for others to explore the unique connection to personal psychic material. The process of soul-making is different for each individual and can be cultivated and inspired by many ways of dialoguing with your dreams, which the workshop plans to supply. In this episode, the dream girls discuss possible dream symbols of the heart center. Ideas of blood, flowers, religion, and lions are swirled around the minds of the hosts as they ponder about how these topics pierce the heart. They bring up where these symbols appear in their own dreams and how that makes them feel. Kaisa shares an experience of internalized shame and an active imagination she did to understand where this shame is wanting to be understood. We talk about how deeply rooted this is within individuals and the culture at large. Last week, we talked about the enneagram 4 space, so this week we explored a bit more on the enneagram 2 space of ‘Love'. Loving ourselves and others is a very hard thing to do when we have a lot of complexes standing in the way of that resonance. Sammy returns in this part two episode as one of her many incarnations; typed specifically for this conversation as sp/so 9w8 964. We continue a discussion about the heart center as an aesthetic realm, diving into the depths of the enneagram type 4 space as the abyss. We bring in religious and spiritual references, and some of our own dreams for reflection. Sammy returns in this episode as one of her many incarnations; typed specifically for this conversation as sp/so 9w8 964. We talk about the aesthetics of the heart center and how that might land in the enneagram type 4 space compared to the other types. We discuss art, understanding emotion, identity, and image. The attempts to view the world and ourselves as a living, symbolic image can be difficult to discuss and describe but we take on the challenge. Kaisa and Kristen freeform on this episode about how they keep running into head center ‘stuff' as they read sources that feel like it's talking about the heart. The symbolic implications of this are interesting to play with in the personal as well as the collective sense. They both bring in personal dreams to illustrate these simultaneous and relational centers. Kristen and Kaisa talk about belief, religion, truth, betrayal, and love. Kaisa and Kristen continue talking about the themes, images, and other dissections of James Hillman's essay, ‘The Thought of the Heart'. Along with general discussion, this episode loosely summarizes the previous readings and investigates possible future discoveries in the heart center and the realm of dreams. Kaisa and Kristen talk about James Hillman's essay ‘The Thought of the Heart' and how it relates to our connection (or lack of) to the heart center. We have personal as well as societal reflections on this material and what it could mean for individual types and where the heart is operating in our/their type structure. We get quite animated about the hidden gems of the heart center, and are determined to see what we start to uncover in the unconscious on the matter. We revisit the body center so that Kaisa can get closure on the process she was absent for at the end of our exploration. She shares a dream that responded to our dream incubation, and we talk about how that highlights her own experience. Our conversation further differentiates the body types in the unconscious and how that impacts our motivations and sense of autonomy and movement. The themes of desire, sexuality, anger, needs, will, power, etc. are all revisited in the episode of Kaisa's Closure.
Sammy and Kristen start diving into the heart center and contemplate what it means in the realm of dreams. We differentiate some language used for the heart center like image, shame versus guilt, and how that stems from object relations. We share a few of our own personal dreams that could be illustrating heart-centered motions between the dream ego and the ego of waking life. We're excited to expand on all of these topics as the wisdom of our dreams begin to help us through this journey. Sammy and Kristen continue the previous conversation by sharing their dreams that they incubated to see how the body center might be operating in their unconscious. They asked their unconscious; ‘What am I asking another to hold?' and they received answers which they begin to break apart and understand. These dreams can show a way in which listeners can see and listen to the body center within the realm of their own dreams and processes or experiences of life. Resources; James Hillman's ‘Senex and Puer' lectures
Sammy and Kristen talk about what object relations might be highlighting about the body center and the unconscious. We break down the previously mentioned concepts of the container, blurred boundaries, anger, unconscious identification, and how all of this could be showing up in each of the body types. All of the body types/centers are dissociated and confused where their boundaries really are or where they are not. With the idea of ‘holding', both in the environment and with others, we can learn how to make more space for parts of us that are outcasted or unloved. Using dreams as a way to see where or who we're projecting these parts of us in can be a useful way to strengthen our container and identify our true boundaries. Kristen and Kaisa discuss possible dream symbols to track for the body center. We talk about abstract concepts such as considering the environment of a dream and the psychological processing of alchemy. More obvious symbols like fire, forges, blood, animals, and actual bodies in the dream are also talked about and explored both objectively and personally. We talk a lot about our relationships to where the body's energy may be trapped or unresolved, and what the symbols of dreams could be showing us on how to work with that and help it to actually move in a more productive and freeing way. Distinguishing these parts and beginning to separate them from the other centers or instincts can be useful when isolating work on the body center. Sammy and Kristen take over the podcast conversation today to talk about their personal journeys so far on the body center. We talk about recent dream imagery, personal associations that have transformed, and discoveries we've had on the connections to our bodies and what's all ‘hiding' in this center. Because of the free-flowing nature of this conversation; we also talk about families, the instincts, ‘bitter' medicine, cognitive functions, mortality, strength, and more! We answer a listener's question that came along in time for us to talk about the body center and how it relates to the sexual instinct and sexuality. We talk about what it means to feel attraction and desire and how that projection (like we discovered with anger) can help us develop a relationship to our bodies as the container of these experiences, and show us our path to individuation. Kaisa and Kristen recount a very recent story that is relevant to the discussion on anger in the body. We've had a lot of internal reactions to the topics we talk about on the podcast, and we were fortunate enough this time to be able to share personal observations on anger as a teacher; the projection, the internal reflections, and the repair. Kaisa also shares a dream that came right after the event, and how it has all helped shift things within her attitudes and connection to life. Resources; ‘Women Who Run With The Wolves' by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma' by Peter Levine
Kristen and Kaisa explore the topic of anger and rage in the body center. We discuss how anger can initially be projected, but the real work is within undergoing an internal process that requires contemplation of the source and direction of energy. Anger can be a creative process and actually regenerate modes of energy stuck within the body. Through uncovering our own relationship to anger in dreams and life, we start to understand how it can be cultivated and used as a tool. We also look at how anger has appeared in mythology such as the archetype of Ares and Hephaestus. Anger can show up not only when boundaries are being disrespected, but also when feelings of being ‘pushed out' or outcasted appear. Looking at these examples can help understand the complexities of anger and how it can become more conscious. The contemplation and reflection of anger is essential in the process of individuation. ‘Releases' from anger such as creativity, grief, or humor is also a helpful part of working with the intense experience. We talk about what the ‘container' is and how it relates to the body center. The container is important in understanding emotions and sensations and allowing them to be felt, known, acknowledged, and understood. We talk about what it's like to set up a container to allow these experiences to be explored, and how that could impact the connection to your body center. We also discuss topics such as emotion versus sensation, trauma, expressing language, the unconscious body versus the subtle body, etc. Separating the narratives from what is the body and its sensations and natural instincts is where the work of the body center really takes place. Kaisa takes the stage in this episode as she describes her recent experiences in developing a relationship to her body center. As she works to transform her external life, we also explore how that's being reflected in her internal life. The other two hosts chime in with ideas and abilities to relate to how deep and complex the body center can operate daily and within the realm of dreams. They also discuss the topics for future body center episodes like ‘the container' and ‘anger', and how that might show up in life and in dreams. The hosts begin to discuss where their minds are going when looking at the Enneagram Centers of Intelligence. The team explores how they feel the centers both as a concept and how they're operating in their lives. They briefly discuss what the centers are and their first impressions of how they operate in the unconscious versus the personality. The conversation mainly starts to dive into the body center, where we'll begin the journey of the Centers. As we start to wrap up our exploration of the sexual instinct, the hosts share their personal journey over the past couple of months. They go back to the starting point, discovering how each person had a different psychic place where this material impacted them. The conversation unfolds into the nooks and crannies of the middle part as themes of body, matter, spirit, and social complexes take form. By the end, in true sexual instinct fashion, the current mess of the hosts' progress is expressed as themes of vulnerability, pleasure, and how we treat ourselves. For part two of sex in dreams, we explore the more spiritual and archetypal connections of the sexual instinct and the act of sex. Kaisa brings in concepts revolving around Pan, Eros, the culture's projections and current struggles, love and creation, sexual energy transfer, and emotional connections. A lot of the topics discussed evoke personal emotions, dreams, and stories that we can relate to and expand on for our path towards inner work and growth. The trio is back to revisit the mysterious concept of Anima/Animus. The concept is discussed more abstractly this time, exploring the ‘third' element's role and energetic component when working with dreams. We talk about how the Anima/Animus wants to challenge who we think we are and how we think we should operate in the world based on our unconscious, habitual patterns in our instincts and type. Focusing on the more uncomfortable things to bring to consciousness, we allow ourselves to be more fluid and adaptable in order to strengthen and familiarize ourselves with our inner Other. We speak a lot about how popular the negative inner Other is in others and within our own personal lives in order to maybe shed some more light on an authentic connection. Continuing our previous conversation, Kristen and Kaisa dive into the dream symbols of sexual blinds' dreams. We pull from examples of themes in many sexual blinds, including Kristen's own personal reflections. The inner ‘Other' is talked about as it could ‘clothe' itself in a distant, unobtainable figure, which sparks a conversation about sexual blinds desiring comfort and validation rather than distinguishing their own unique polarity and taking a risk. The Patriarchy is brought up again, and how this personal and societal concept is embedded in our psyche and therefore influences our sense of sexuality. We also talk about partners, exes, and strangers, and how to start to differentiate what we might be associating with them in a dream. With our Princess Sammy missing, Kaisa and Kristen discuss the symbols that could appear in sexual types' dreams. We first discuss some general, archetypal symbols that might be commenting on the sexual instinct. We thought it was best to separate the symbols in dreams by sexual types and sexual blinds, since the feelings and energies are usually hiding more within the sexual instinct rather than within just the tangible symbols and situations. For sexual types, we talk about repulsive people or objects, liminal spaces, and magical or godly images. This also invites conversations about the ego self axis, polarities in the sexual instinct, and how the ego may be using the persona to achieve sexual goals. It's finally here; we're talking about sex in dreams and how it relates to the sexual instinct. In this unplanned, spontaneous episode, we discuss anything that comes to mind with sex in dreams and what it could mean. We talk about a few of our own dreams and make interesting distinctions of what's ‘missing' based on our instinct stacking. We ‘let go' of our usual, informative banter in this one; having more of a free-flowing discussion and making a lot of room for jokes. We'll try to take it more seriously in Part Two! In this episode we enter through the triangle and discover what 1+1 really is, and why the magic number 3 could be a portal through transcending our usual suffering of jealousy and anger. We break apart the tension of polarities and how to use that tension for accessing a third perspective. Understanding how the ‘third' element is showing up in an unconscious way, and how to cultivate a more authentic ‘third' aspect whether alone or in a relationship, can strengthen the connection to a person's sexual instinct. Kaisa shares a personal story to illustrate the impact of triangulation in waking life. We also give a few examples of dreams that have mirrored the process, and different ways to ‘play' within the triangle and break out of the typical pattern of awareness. We wrap up the podcast by reflecting on a few different ideas of masculinity, femininity, and the Eternal Now. A second mythological theme we look at in this episode is dismembering and reassembling. This theme is shown through shamanic traditions and the myths of Dionysus, Osiris, Ymir, etc. We discuss why dismembering and reassembling would be important in the sexual instinct, and also how it might show up in an egoic way. We bring in some of our own dreams where this theme shows up. Along with this mythology, there is also an aspect of ‘eating of the flesh'. Since the veil between this world and the realm of the dead is thin around the time of Halloween/Samhain, we get extra spooky in this conversation with topics of fleshy spiders and eating corpses. To begin our dive into some of the mythology of the sexual instinct, Sammy presents a dream she's had on this journey so far. It has a strange connection with the story of Hephaestus, so we discuss the similarities and differences, and how it all relates to Sammy's process and the sexual instinct itself. Sammy's story mirrors Hephaestus, going all the way back to her birth and the medicine the dream could be giving her now. We talk about how this myth is alive today in the collective, and therefore operating in each of us somewhere individually. The trouble of accessing creativity, the building of resentment and pain, the archetypes hiding under our own complexes, and other topics start to unfold in this conversation. The book we are referencing from in this podcast is The Principle of Individuation by Murray Stein. The large and complex topic of Carl Jung's Anima and Animus is broken down in relation to the sexual instinct in dreams. Sammy starts out relaying a dream she had that transitions the conversation into how our inner Other shows up in a dream and why. We talk about the relationship to our unconscious material, the passion for longing, devotion, self-expression, our wholeness, and even more of a mix of what these fascinating figures could be representing. There's no way to explain all of the nuances in a small time frame, but hopefully this can kickstart a better understanding of the inner Other's functions.
