Ashley Roberts graduated from the 5x Certification and has built something really beautiful since then, a feminine embodiment movement practice rooted in dance, somatic work, and helping women find their way back into their bodies after years of operating purely from logic and achievement. In this episode, we get into what feminine embodiment actually means, because it gets thrown around so much online that it starts to lose its shape. Ashley breaks it down through Marion Woodman's work, through the masculine and feminine as water and mountains, and through her own story of feeling completely disconnected from her body until she went alcohol-free and found her way into a feminine embodiment workshop that changed her perspective. We talk about what it looks like when someone is operating too much in their masculine: the hyper independence, the need for control, the inability to receive help, and why that pattern almost always comes from a place that once needed safety. Ashley shares how dance became her way out of her head and into her body, what her Monday night movement classes actually look like, and how this work completely shifted her marriage, her confidence, and her relationship with her own sensuality. We also get into the cyclical nature of feminine energy, how to know when softening is actually the right move versus when it's fear dressed up as surrender, and the very honest conversation about how alcohol was Ashley's old shortcut to the same thing dance gives her now, except one of them backfires and one of them doesn't. INSIDE THIS EPISODE: What feminine embodiment actually means, and why it has nothing to do with gender roles The signs that someone is stuck in hyper masculine mode, and why hyper independence is really about safety Why dance is one of the fastest ways to get out of your head and into your body How Ashley's marriage changed when she stopped trying to prove she was pulling her weight The difference between healthy surrender and using softness as a mask for fear How working with your cycle changes how you plan your energy across the month Why alcohol numbs the exact thing feminine energy is built on, the ability to feel LINKS/RESOURCES MENTIONED Apply to be our next Thought Leader to master premium selling and thought leader positioning to publish your book and deliver your keynote onstage. What if perfectionism isn’t something we need to overcome—but something we need to understand differently? In this episode of Tend HER Wild, we explore perfectionism through a new lens. Rather than viewing it as a flaw to fix, we discuss the difference between healthy striving and the forms of perfectionism that keep us disconnected from our authentic selves. We share our own stories of perfectionism, examine how culture shapes our expectations, and explore why perfectionism is often less about achievement and more about managing anxiety and seeking safety. In todays episode we draw on the work of Brené Brown, Clarissa Pinkola Estés, and Marion Woodman, and we unpack: The difference between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism Why high standards aren’t the problem The role of the inner critic How perfectionism impacts women, creativity, and leadership The connection between perfectionism, people-pleasing, anxiety, and depression Why socially prescribed perfectionism may be the most harmful form How perfectionism can keep us from creating the life we’re longing for As Clarissa Pinkola Estés reminds us, we don’t need perfect strength—we need adequate strength to be ourselves. Sometimes 75% is enough. A flower doesn’t need to be fully open to be blooming. If you’ve been feeling disconnected from yourself, navigating burnout or grief, constantly over-performing, or longing for a more authentic and intuitive life, this conversation is for you. Send us Fan MailIn this episode (the first of its kind that I've made in almost a year!), I explore some of the ideas presented in Marion Woodman's "Bone: Dying Into Life," which is a collection of journal entries that chronicle her experience with uterine cancer from 1993–1995. I mostly muse on a smattering of quotes that Woodman wrote in the margins of her journal, from the likes of Carl Jung, Emily Dickinson, and Rainer Maria Rilke. Topics include the fast pace of our society and the importance of slowing down (group can help with that!); how we see versions of ourselves in others (group, anyone?); how symptoms are an attempt at healing, and how physical travails can bring us to higher consciousness; the relentless demands of dinner; the value and necessity of mundane activities; the joy of dwelling in Possibility (group again!); and the impossibility of ever knowing someone completely, which means we should try all the more to do it, like good bodhisattvas (and group members!).

We do not step aside to disengage but to evolve creative alternatives to power struggles. We may not be able to do as much as we would like about the way things turn out on sociopolitical battle-grounds, that often require well-coordinated strategies involving many people. Just as there are darkened seasons in human history—times when the structures sustaining civilization collapse in on themselves and humanity finds itself stiff-fisted, grasping at brittle branches, slipping between worlds—so too is every individual subject to phases of undoing in the metamorphosis of a lifetime.Entering the chrysalis is rarely a matter of choice. We would resist if we could. One morning, we awaken with a pit in the stomach, a visceral unease that signals change even before we can name its source. Quite all of a sudden, we find we have entered a dream with no solid ground and no turning back. Loss feels imminent, along with the uncertainty of what comes next or how we will get there. We try to keep moving, mistaking busyness for control of circumstance. We hoist the blueprints of our former lives above our heads to keep them dry, trying to shore up what is already dissolving. We try very hard, as all creatures do, not to die. Yet for the caterpillar, entering the chrysalis is a form of programmed death—a gruesome act of self-digestion. What can the larva comprehend of its own metamorphosis as it surrenders to darkness and enzymatic dissolution? Before it can be reconstituted, the caterpillar's whole body must pupate—which is to say liquify. Epithelial cells breaking down, muscles and mandibles lysed by their own enzymes, the entire body reduced to a nutrient slurry.Every winter, nature takes this serious turn. Fallen leaves coil in on themselves, roots retreat, seeds release, and stillness wraps the living world. Here's orientation from a recent column in our cherished local magazine, the Santa Fe New Mexican —“In winter, our arid steppe climate shows us the value of leaving things alone. Grasses left standing become shelter. Seed heads become sustenance. Evergreen shrubs offer cover from wind and predators when the world feels most exposed. What looks untidy to us is, in fact, a carefully balanced system of protection and patience. The garden does not ask us to fix it in January—only to witness it.”The winter gardener knows not to try to fix such depression, but instead to witness and accompany the world beyond control. For the winter gardener recognizes the fallows as sanctuary, the outer casings of seed heads and pale grasses as fortresses of transformation, and death as a passage between birthing seasons. This is the winter gardener's regenerative faith.Similarly, with respect to human development, Jungian analyst and author Marion Woodman called the chrysalis “a twilight between past, present, and future,” a place where the psyche must “tolerate annihilation—just long enough for the new form to begin assembling itself.” She described the sojourn of life as a series of “border crossings between what we were and what we cannot yet imagine.”For the caterpillar, the dream of the butterfly is carried by imaginal cells—tiny, sac-like clusters that, through the primordial twilight of metamorphosis, give rise at last to compound eyes, scaled wings—a new and elegant anatomy. This is how a creature built for crawling holds within its body the imagination of flight. In his 1910 Oxford lecture, The Birth of Humility, anthropologist Robert Ranulph Marett described metamorphic thresholds as “psycho-physical,” when body and mind falter so that “latent energies [may] gather strength for activity on a fresh plane.”The most courageous way we can enter the chrysalis is with attunement. “Pause,” Marett wrote, “is the necessary condition of the development of all those higher purposes which make up the rational being.” James Baldwin attested that the darkest hour can “force a reconciliation between oneself and all one's pain and error.” We cannot will ourselves to grow, for transformation is an act of presence, not power. But within the privacy of our consciousness, with patience and attention, we can rediscover the forces shaping our evolution and develop faith in what is becoming. In Jungian terms, the collective mirrors the individual psyche: what deconstructs in the outer world—painfully, though necessarily—reflects what must be reimagined from within. Today, democratic principles and ecological balance are slipping from their axes. But, as Marett observed, “Not until the days of this period of chrysalis life have been painfully accomplished can [a person] emerge a new and glorified creature.”Some silent, imaginal knowledge within us already knows the way. Here in the high desert, the earliest bloomers will soon appear: proof that the intelligence of life has been preparing the ground, all along, for the resurrection of some new and common beauty.Together, we're making sense of what it means to be human in an era of radical change. Siedem archetypów w jednym kadrze: Matka, Kochanka, Wojowniczka, Królowa, Dziewica, Wiedźma i Kapłanka – gdzie i kiedy przejawia się każda z tych energii? Dlaczego integracja archetypów wymaga dojrzałości i gotowości psychicznej.
In this episode of Gatherings, we unpack the enduring power of the vampire archetype. We trace its evolution from the gothic shadows of Dracula to today's romanticized immortal figures, revealing how the vampire reflects the repressed, unintegrated, and wounded parts of the psyche. Drawing on insights from Marion Woodman and Michael Singer, we explore the vampire as a symbol of psychic energy turned inward—what happens when life force becomes blocked or possessed by the shadow. We also situate the myth in its social context, connecting its late-Victorian rise to cultural fears around feminism, sexuality, and capitalism. The conversation closes by asking why our current moment is again obsessed with the vampire and what this collective fascination might tell us about trauma, desire, and the hunger for aliveness.
“We have to let go of our own patriarchy,” says Elinor Dickson. “And we’re afraid to because it represents control for us.” Dickson spent more than 35 years as a Jungian therapist, and she cowrote the seminal Dancing in the Flames with her good friend Marion Woodman. She’s one of the wise elders of our time. We explore the new universal mythos our culture so badly needs, Dickson’s fascinating historical perspective (including how our modern world is largely shaped by the Great Plague), and why neither a matriarchy or a patriarchy is right for us. Dickson also shares where she sees shoots of hope, and one wild story of synchronicity. For the show notes, head to my Substack.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Host: Jason Rigby Guest: Ashley M. Ryan (Pythian Priestess) Guest Bio: Ashley M. Ryan, known as Pythian Priestess, is an initiated priestess in a Hermetic Order dedicated to the Goddess Auset (Isis). With over half her life dedicated to studying and practicing magick and witchcraft, she rose to TikTok fame in 2019 and founded the Pythian Mystery School in 2020. Ashley is a spiritual leader, educator, and advocate for reclaiming the sacred feminine in its wholeness—light and shadow alike. Episode Overview: In this powerful and thought-provoking episode, Jason Rigby welcomes back Ashley M. Ryan, the Pythian Priestess, to discuss her evolving journey as a spiritual leader and the fierce, unapologetic nature of the divine feminine. Ashley shares her insights on sacred rage, the commodification of spirituality, and the importance of integrating the shadow self. Drawing from ancient archetypes like Black Isis, Kali, and the Black Madonna, she offers practical rituals and wisdom for women seeking wholeness in a world that often dilutes the sacred. The conversation explores themes of truth, resilience, and the balance of light and shadow, challenging the "love and light" narrative with a call to embrace the wild and transformative aspects of spirituality. Key Themes: 1. Sacred Rage and the Warrior Archetype Ashley steps into the "warrior archetype" as a woman, not to destroy, but to defend truth, the sacred, and the mysteries (01:40). She connects this to her astrological birth chart (Saturn and Mars in the sixth house), emphasizing service and discipline (01:40). 2. The Dilution of Spirituality Ashley expresses grief over the commodification of spirituality, watching it become a "branded ATM" rather than a transformative tool (02:35). She critiques spiritual bypassing and the avoidance of pain, especially post-LA fires (03:32). 3. The Dark Goddess and Wholeness Referencing Dancing in the Flames by Woodman and Dickinson, Ashley explains the absence of the dark goddess in modern society and its damaging effects (04:41). Archetypes like Kali, Black Isis, and the Black Madonna embody resilience, fierce love, and the integration of suffering (16:06, 20:00). 4. Thumos: The Spirited Fire of the Soul Ashley introduces the ancient Greek concept of Thumos—righteous anger that defends truth and honor—contrasting it with the "love and light" narrative (10:39). She ties this to Plato's chariot allegory and the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot's Chariot card, symbolizing balance between the soul's appetites and higher aspirations (14:05). 5. Embracing the Shadow Ashley emphasizes that the shadow is not an enemy but a part of wholeness, urging listeners to alchemize pain into wisdom (33:50, 35:15). She shares a personal story of a nightmare at 15, revealing unexpressed rage and the unconscious mind's role in healing (23:04). 6. Practical Rituals for Integration Ashley offers two rituals: mirror gazing with a candle to confront the soul (28:38) and scrying with a black bowl to uncover unhealed wounds (30:11). She stresses the importance of action post-ritual, such as therapy or inner child work (32:53). 7. Fear and the Occult Addressing fear around witchcraft and the occult, Ashley attributes it to societal conditioning and the rejection of feminine archetypes (42:16). She invokes Ma'at (balance and justice) as a source of boldness to face suffering and reclaim the sacred (40:42). If 'power' is the extent to which we each are able to bring about our intentions in the world, then our power matters. But there are many different ways to exercise power - as a parent, colleague, friend - in any role where our actions influence others. What does it take to recognise how we're exercising the power we have? Are we acting from our fearful parts or from that which is solid, genuine and faithful to life? Perhaps the deeper invitation is to centre our power around love itself - whether fierce or gentle - rather than around our attempts to dominate and control. It's the energy of knowing that you are who you are, and therefore speaking and acting from your authentic self. It doesn't matter what your work is—if you're a teacher or a nurse or whatever; it is your presence that's the power. It's not power over anybody else. It's just the expression of who you are. Power in the sense of controlling somebody else is different from personal presence. Love is the real power. It's the energy that cherishes. The more you work with that energy, the more you will see how people respond naturally to it, and the more you'll want to use it. It brings out your creativity, and helps everyone around you flower. Your children, the people you work with - everyone blooms. Marion Woodman Photo by Jessica Alves on Unsplash
To continue the idea of ‘Type Ensouled', Sammy and Kristen reflect on their own dreams and how they've correlated with their personality and life experiences. We use the power of stories and myth to amplify the purpose of our personal enneagram types. To be able to ‘catch the thread' of our human and soul path became a fun and interesting attempt to play with the creative energies that are present. “Storytelling is at the heart of life... In finding our own story, we assemble all the parts of ourselves. Whatever kind of mess we have made of it, we can somehow see the totality of who we are and recognize how our blunderings are related. We can own what we did and value who we are, not because of the outcome but because of the soul story that propelled us.” - Marion Woodman

To continue the topic of the head center, we discuss how metaphor can be a way to ‘open' us up to different narratives or perspectives. When bringing in the aspect of ‘play' to dreams, symbols can feel more autonomous and alive, giving us a chance to be impacted and moved by them. Kristen and Sammy talk about their own experiences ‘playing' and being fascinated by metaphor, tying in previous topics from the head center. Kristen also talks about a recent experience with a shift from looking at a dream in a flat way as opposed to a creative and metaphorical way. Resources; ‘The Ravaged Bridegroom' - Marion Woodman
“I get to be the creatrix, the creator, of my own life and my own experience.” –Sil ReadBeing human is a hero's journey. Are you ready for yours? I'm so excited for this conversation with my mentor Sil Read in this special birthday episode about stepping into the next part of your life. What is it about midlife? Life is a constant cycle of death and rebirth, and midlife is more intense because you've got the time element. You realize it isn't infinite. Other parts of your life may be changing. For you to rebirth yourself — and you get to be the creatrix of your life — some part of you has to die. You can choose to slow down time and honor the transitions and the change. We talk about: The power of retreatsShowing up with crone wisdom and beginner's mindHolding oppositesStages of maiden, mother, crone, and being with the wisdom of the crone even if we aren't there yetTrusting the process and that a new life will welcome you outside of the chrysalisWhat we can discover from symbols and archetypesABOUT SILSil Read is a mother, author, teacher, and a coach for women. She is proud to call herself an elder. Sil brings 40-years of experience working with women to her coaching and teaching: experience as a nurse practitioner, psychotherapist, and workshop leader. Sil graduated from Brown University where she majored in Women's Studies. She studied with the renowned Jungian author and analyst Marion Woodman for two decades and graduated from Woodman's BodySoul Rhythms training in dreamwork, archetypal psychology, and the art and science of listening to the wisdom of the body. Sil loves guiding women in reclaiming rejected parts of themselves, so that they can experience their wholeness and, therefore, a more conscious and authentically lived life.LINKSSil's Site: https://www.silread.com/On the PlanSimple Podcast: From the Inside Out with Sil ReynoldsMothering with Sil Reynolds The Heroine's Journey with Kristin HanggiDOABLE CHANGESAt the end of every episode, we share three doable changes, so you can take what you've heard and put it into action. Action is where change happens. But here's the thing: when we have a goal, a wish, a desire bubbling up in us, it can feel really huge. Sometimes we stop ourselves in our tracks based on how huge our desire feels. Change needs action, but it doesn't need huge action. When we focus on the next step, the next Doable Change that we can integrate into our lives, we don't get stuck and we create momentum. Choose one Doable Change that resonates with you today and really play with it. Fit it into your life, your days, make it work for you — then move on to your next Doable Change. Here are Three Doable Changes from this conversation: HOLD OPPOSITES. You can hold an inner or outer conflict quietly instead of trying to resolve it quickly. Start by asking yourself: What opposites am I holding today? Holding that conflict can help birth the new. Start with identifying your opposites...
Remnants of Humanity: Journey Throughout Our Sacred Earth to Restore Balance Held Within the Feminine Dimension by Christine Van Camp ZeccaThe twenty-first century is facing worldwide disintegration. The spiritual systems are falling apart, revealing the lack of all that used to sustain humanity as notions of separation prevail. However, inclusion is essential for survival. Profound love is more powerful than hate, but those in power amplify/ hate, destroying humanity in the process. After the collapse of Western civilization in North America, survivors grounded in healing love flee south. Seven millennia later, an isolated outpost of women wants to share its hard-earned wisdom. These earth-based shamans are losing the energy to continue, unless they can connect with the Underworld of Dreaming Nature to find suitable males to join them. Their quest attracts other “remnants” that also wish to regenerate the planet and return joy to the world. Paradigm shifts are required to reinvigorate the inevitable toxic collapse of a corrupted society, hope rests in the hands of feminine energy and hard-earned wisdom. She works with creativity and the imaginal realm integrating her background of 30 years of Jungian studies and analysis, DreamTending, and other forms of embodied dream work. She completed BodySoul Rhythms Leadership Training with Marion Woodman that integrates Jung's work with experiential modalities of dream, imaginal work, voice & body expressions with the intention of bringing deeper levels of awareness into our conscious being. We answer a listener's question that came along in time for us to talk about the body center and how it relates to the sexual instinct and sexuality. We talk about what it means to feel attraction and desire and how that projection (like we discovered with anger) can help us develop a relationship to our bodies as the container of these experiences, and show us our path to individuation. Ellen Emmet is a psychotherapist, facilitator of Authentic Movement, and offers meetings in The Awakening Body: Yoga meditations in the tradition of non-duality and Kashmir Shivaism that she learnt from her teachers Francis Lucille and Eric Baret. She offers webinars and residential retreats. Her offering is an exploration of our true nature at the level of tactility and feelings, but also an inquiry into the hidden corners of the psyche to invite more wholeness into our lives. More specifically, The Awakening Body meetings focus on the body, “allowing it to be our mirror and our pathway, our prayer and our altar, and ultimately the shining expression of this shared identity.” Our conversation explores the complex topic of nonduality and the shadow. Ellen's growing intuition matched my own, that nondual teachings can often be used as a way to escape difficult emotions or feelings, or even disown the body, and overlook or avoid the shadow. With training in Jungian philosophy, including working directly with Jungian analyst Marion Woodman, Ellen brings wisdom and openness to exploring this oversight. Topics include connecting to the wisdom of the body, relational alchemy, the pain of separation, nonduality as a hiding place, ever-present nature of peace, the path of devotion, the role of the divine feminine, and ways to avoid ego inflation. The Transformative Power of Midlife with Dr. Andrea Slominski with Dr. Andrea SlominskiI had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Andrea Slominski, a women's midlife coach who has dedicated her life to guiding women through life's seismic shifts, including perimenopause, midlife, and menopause. We delved into the concept of 'regency,' a unique life stage for women, the importance of community, and the potent role of archetypal psychology in navigating these changes. Dr. A's enlightening perspectives have inspired me, and I'm sure will inspire other women to view this period as a time of transformation, growth, and rediscovery. In this episode we get curious about:Concept of "Regency"Women's transitions during perimenopause, midlife, and menopauseImportance of community during challenging life changesArchetypal psychology and its role in personal understandingEconomic power of women in midlifeThe power of narrative and storytellingDr. A's online community, Women's Wisdom VillageThe significance of mythology in understanding life changesTo learn more about our guest: Website: Women's Midlife Coach | Dr. A. This week's show is with William Apple. William Apple is a Psychological and Spiritual Mentor, as well as a Psychodynamic Coach. The Foundation of his Work is rooted in Carl Jung's Concept of “Individuation”, and takes a new approach towards fostering a conscious relationship with that Process by quantifying a Depth Psychological and Psychoanalytic approach to the Inner Child as a Precursor to Shadow Work. He is Certified in CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and Polyvagal Theory, and his Inner Child Work is strongly influenced by Alice Miller, D.W. Winnicott, Jacque Lacan, Marion Woodman, Magda Gerber, Bell Hooks, and many others. In this conversation, William and I explored the unfolding journey of creating a relationship with the inner child, how confronting it can feel to see how much of our life has been created from the wounding of the child, and how we can be with that in an accepting and accountable way, and lastly and maybe surprisingly, given what a gloomy picture I may have just painted - how it can be a beautiful and playful experience! We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: The inner child is all the wounded parts of us that have been fractured through conditioning and the parts of us that have been created as coping mechanisms as a result The fish metaphor that arose is one that I think is very helpful in allowing us to see the depths of the conditioning - as William said “We've been led to believe we're fish!” I loved what William said about how those of us who have been in the work for many years, it's not been a waste of time - it's actually a map back to ourselves if we look at the work and our fantasies about it, it can reveal so much about our wounds. We can continue doing that work, with awareness and actually enjoying the play! This week I spoke with Sam Burton. He's an artist originally from Utah now living in my neighborhood in LA, which is how we met. He's an incredible musician and I loved talking to him. Sam came over a few weeks ago and we drank tea and talked about everything from how he began playing music, to how he approaches collaboration, craft, and creativity. He's deeply introspective and after studying Jungian psychology, he began reading tarot for himself and others. We spoke about how he got into typology, Myers-Briggs, and dream work and how that impacts his songwriting. He's candid about how “perfection bubbles” burst, the value of connection, and how constructive feedback given well has shaped his sound. We get into what he's learned recently about sustaining a career in in the music business, touring, maintaining a beginner's mind, processing external validation and criticism, plus his thoughts on love, nature, friendship, the music that shaped him, and more. I especially loved this one, Sam is humble, easy to talk to, and full of wisdom. Let us know if you listen. Winnicott, Jacque Lacan, Marion Woodman, Magda Gerber, Bell Hooks, and many others. In this conversation, William and I explored, Phantasy vs Fantasy, what is meant by each, how to know which you're engaging in, and how to work with them consciously. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: Phantasy means the spectres of the past are being projected onto the world, whereas Fantasy means what we generally think of the word - conscious engagement of imagining things (and being honest and accountable about that). Once this distinction between the two types is clear, it allows us to see more clearly how we show up in the world, not just to others but to ourselves. We rarely see others for who they are, we see them for who we phantasise them to be. Projections are the non-verbal hopes, dreams and expectations of what we hope that world will be like so we can feel safe. The hopes, dreams and expectations are coming from the spectres of the past - which are unmet needs from childhood which are now being projected out onto others and the world. The work of consciously working with our phantasies means being accountable for them, without shame, blame and guilt. Reclaiming and remembering how to consciously fantasise with our active imagination, particularly with our projections, can be so healing and also fun! In today's episode, I open up a conversation about what it means to be average. What are the true motivations behind being exceptional? Do we actually deeply fear being forgotten? Unaccepted? Unloved? The interview article with Marion Woodman can be found here. Enjoy the show! Be sure to rate, review, and share the show with those who you feel would enjoy the show! Thanks for listening! A voicemail from Thiago in Brazil and a direct message from Noura in Egypt reminded me why I started this podcast in the first place and why so many of us resonate with the concept of feeling starved at a spiritual level – constantly grappling with feelings of brokenness and perpetual emptiness. There's only one way out of the pits of hell caused by this thinking: zooming the f*ck out. If you have a question you'd like me to answer on a future episode, you can submit it via email at backfromtheborderline@gmail.com or record a voicemail at backfromtheborderline.com. (I don't reply to emails/voicemails directly.) If you want to learn more about zooming out and considering higher/broader perspectives, I've included a few places to start below. (Don't forget, this is YOUR journey – you need to follow your OWN spiritual breadcrumbs.) “How Do We Break the Habit of Excessive Thinking?” with Eckhart Tolle“How to re-frame a challenging moment and feel empowered?” with Gabor Maté MD“Let your relationships become a vehicle for freedom” with Ram Dass“The principal of not forcing” with Alan Watts“Holding the tension of the opposites” with Marion Woodman Disclaimer: information contained in this podcast episode is for educational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for treatment or consultation with a licensed mental health professional. Morning Star Woman & Ivan the Youngest Son is, in its original bones, my own telling of the Russian fairytale "The Maiden Tsar," as explored by Robert Bly and Marion Woodman in their book The Maiden King. I will admit, however, that I've taken it and run with it. You will see flashes as far afield as the Fisher King of Arthurian legend, and admittedly a few further too. And you will see that its Maiden Tsar, its swan queen, became merged with my imaginings of Venus in her recent descent below the rim of the horizon, out of sight, in mid-September, as if Venus's passage through the underworld were the story of a woman coming down to earth, becoming human. Today she meets the heart of the Sun, and begins climbing toward evening. So this is a story of swan women and eggs and fishermen, of wise old men in huts and the oldest woman in the world who lives in the moon; of how to mend broken things; of learning how to love, and love well. It is a prayer for fatherlines and motherlines and heartlines, a prayer for all the people I love, a prayer for the women and men in the streets of Iran standing and fighting for their freedom and the radiance of their lives, a prayer for something we perhaps all together have nearly forgotten, a prayer for what we cannot afford to lose, together on this Ark, our holy ground, our home. In my introduction, I mention the release of a new collection of mine that steps deeper into the movements of Venus as well as my own heart. It is available for pre-order here: https://www.sylviavictorlinsteadt.com/shop PODCAST SOUND EDITING: Simon Linsteadt PODCAST ART: Catherine Sieck PODCAST MUSIC: Antonis Leontidis (Cretan lyra composition from the album Krifo: antonisleontidis.bandcamp.com/album/krifo) ABOUT THE PODCAST: Welcome to Kalliope's Sanctum, a story podcast hosted by writer Sylvia V. Linsteadt. This podcast is dedicated to Kalliope, primordial and first Muse of epic poetry and ecstatic song in ancient Greece. This podcast is a place of sanctuary for her oldest stories. It is a return to the wild garden, to the spring, to the ground of being & the source of inspiration in the Earth. Here, we honor Kalliope as Muse of Earth. Here, you will find some of the stories beneath the stories of Old Europe: short fictional/poetic pieces written and read by Sylvia that explore elements of indigenous Old European mythology, with a focus on pre-Hellenic (pre-Patriarchal) Greece. Come sit with us in the honeyed light, among the ripe pomegranates, in Kalliope's sanctuary, where the stories that arise directly from the ground of being and lifeforce can still be safely told and celebrated. Come lean against the sun-warmed stones, with the fragrance of propolis & myrrh in the air, and the trees heavy with autumn quince. This is the garden before the fall, a sanctuary for all hearts in this time. Join us, and be revived. ABOUT SYLVIA V. LINSTEADT: Sylvia V. Linsteadt is a novelist, poet, scholar of ancient history, myth and ecology, and artist. She divides her time between California & Crete, where she is currently working on a novel set in Minoan times. Her published fiction includes the forthcoming collection, The Venus Year, the middle grade children's duology The Stargold Chronicles— The Wild Folk (Usborne, June 2018) and The Wild Folk Rising (Usborne, May 2019)— Our Lady of the Dark Country, a collection of short stories (January 2018) and Tatterdemalion (Unbound, Spring 2017); her works of nonfiction include The Wonderments of the East Bay (Heyday 2014), and Lost Worlds of the San Francisco Bay Area (Heyday, Spring 2017). I had a conversation with Quint Boa about his life, his issues with alcohol and his award winning animations about mental health.Psychology Quint has a long history within psychology and psychotherapy. Quint is the nephew of Jungian analysts and authors Marion Woodman & Fraser Boa. His mother is Cherry Boa, sister, Siobhan, both are psychotherapists. Quint gained an M.A in Psychotherapy and Counselling in 1996. Also qualified in CBT and Psychometrics 16PF and Myers Briggs. 1996. Set up a private psychotherapy practice which he maintains to this day. Quint specialises in addiction and anxiety. Life Perhaps as a consequence of his actor father Bruce Boa (Empire Strikes Back, Fawlty Towers, Full Metal Jacket) Quint went into the film and television industry as an actor, presenter and voice over and sometime technician. In 1998 he was nominated for a BAFTA. In 2000 Quint began Shoot You (www.shootyou.com) a Creative Agency in London, England. It focuses on using video and animation for business communication. During lockdown Quint responded to the ‘second pandemic' of mental illness in children and young adults by producing an animation ‘Understanding Anger'. This award winning animation led to a short series of other titles produced to help healthcare professionals and individuals address mental health issues during lockdown. These are free to use. Quint started an IG account in April 2021 as a home for the animations and supplements this feed with to-camera interviews which hope to place some context around the animations. The Future Quint hopes to use animation to bring the latest research to life. To raise awareness and understanding of several mental health issues. And to play an active part in conversations around them. Really hope you enjoy this conversation :) Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
