Host: Jason Rigby Guest: Ashley M. Ryan (Pythian Priestess) Guest Bio: Ashley M. Ryan, known as Pythian Priestess, is an initiated priestess in a Hermetic Order dedicated to the Goddess Auset (Isis). With over half her life dedicated to studying and practicing magick and witchcraft, she rose to TikTok fame in 2019 and founded the Pythian Mystery School in 2020. Ashley is a spiritual leader, educator, and advocate for reclaiming the sacred feminine in its wholeness—light and shadow alike. Episode Overview: In this powerful and thought-provoking episode, Jason Rigby welcomes back Ashley M. Ryan, the Pythian Priestess, to discuss her evolving journey as a spiritual leader and the fierce, unapologetic nature of the divine feminine. Ashley shares her insights on sacred rage, the commodification of spirituality, and the importance of integrating the shadow self. Drawing from ancient archetypes like Black Isis, Kali, and the Black Madonna, she offers practical rituals and wisdom for women seeking wholeness in a world that often dilutes the sacred. The conversation explores themes of truth, resilience, and the balance of light and shadow, challenging the "love and light" narrative with a call to embrace the wild and transformative aspects of spirituality. Key Themes: 1. Sacred Rage and the Warrior Archetype Ashley steps into the "warrior archetype" as a woman, not to destroy, but to defend truth, the sacred, and the mysteries (01:40). She connects this to her astrological birth chart (Saturn and Mars in the sixth house), emphasizing service and discipline (01:40). 2. The Dilution of Spirituality Ashley expresses grief over the commodification of spirituality, watching it become a "branded ATM" rather than a transformative tool (02:35). She critiques spiritual bypassing and the avoidance of pain, especially post-LA fires (03:32). 3. The Dark Goddess and Wholeness Referencing Dancing in the Flames by Woodman and Dickinson, Ashley explains the absence of the dark goddess in modern society and its damaging effects (04:41). Archetypes like Kali, Black Isis, and the Black Madonna embody resilience, fierce love, and the integration of suffering (16:06, 20:00). 4. Thumos: The Spirited Fire of the Soul Ashley introduces the ancient Greek concept of Thumos—righteous anger that defends truth and honor—contrasting it with the "love and light" narrative (10:39). She ties this to Plato's chariot allegory and the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot's Chariot card, symbolizing balance between the soul's appetites and higher aspirations (14:05). 5. Embracing the Shadow Ashley emphasizes that the shadow is not an enemy but a part of wholeness, urging listeners to alchemize pain into wisdom (33:50, 35:15). She shares a personal story of a nightmare at 15, revealing unexpressed rage and the unconscious mind's role in healing (23:04). 6. Practical Rituals for Integration Ashley offers two rituals: mirror gazing with a candle to confront the soul (28:38) and scrying with a black bowl to uncover unhealed wounds (30:11). She stresses the importance of action post-ritual, such as therapy or inner child work (32:53). 7. Fear and the Occult Addressing fear around witchcraft and the occult, Ashley attributes it to societal conditioning and the rejection of feminine archetypes (42:16). She invokes Ma'at (balance and justice) as a source of boldness to face suffering and reclaim the sacred (40:42). Detailed Timestamps: 00:01 - Introduction: Jason welcomes Ashley back, noting her journey as Pythian Priestess and the success of her prior episode. 00:41 - Ashley's Current Calling: Ashley discusses stepping into the warrior archetype to defend truth and the sacred, inspired by her birth chart (Saturn and Mars in the sixth house). 02:35 - Sacred Rage and the Pythian Mystery School: Ashley reflects on the commodification of spirituality post-LA fires and her mission to restore its depth through the Pythian Mystery School and her podcast, The Occult Unveiled. 04:41 - The Dark Goddess: Introduction to Dancing in the Flames and the societal lack of the dark goddess, with Ashley advocating for women to "take up the sword" against patriarchal imbalance (05:25). 10:39 - Thumos and Truth: Ashley explains Thumos as righteous anger, linking it to Plato's chariot allegory and the tarot's Chariot card (14:05). She ties it to four virtues: wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance (12:00). 16:06 - Black Isis and Black Madonna: Ashley explores Black Isis as a symbol of suffering and resilience (17:13) and the Black Madonna as wisdom and realism (20:00), forged in chaos and fierce love. 22:08 - Teaching Wholeness at Pythian Mystery School: Ashley uses dreams and meditations to help students confront the unconscious and embrace the dark goddess (22:36). She shares a personal nightmare as an example (23:04). 28:38 - Practical Rituals: - Ritual 1: Mirror gazing with incense and a candle to see beyond the mask (28:38). - Ritual 2: Scrying with a black bowl and an invocation to uncover unhealed parts (30:11). 33:50 - Embracing the Shadow: Ashley reframes the shadow as a source of strength, not evil, and shares her hypnosis therapy experience to alchemize pain (37:07). 38:40 - Fostering Righteous Anger in the Mystery School: Through meditations, students meet archetypes and receive symbolic gifts (daggers, keys), fostering self-understanding (39:42). 42:16 - Overcoming Fear of the Occult: Ashley attributes fear to societal rejection of feminine archetypes and credits Ma'at for her boldness (40:42). 47:32 - Where to Find Ashley: Ashley shares links: pythianmysteryschool.com, Etsy (Pythian Priestess) for tarot readings, and YouTube for Pause with Pythian and free classes. Notable Quotes: Ashley on Sacred Rage: "There is a lot of rage right now in our society... It is a warrior for truth. It's a warrior for the sacred and to defend the mysteries." (01:40) On Spirituality's Dilution: "I'm watching it become an ATM for people. It's lost its meaning and it's a tool that should be used." (02:35) On the Dark Goddess: "Light is blinding. Light hurts. It's about breaking through illusion." (10:11) On Thumos: "It's the passion and the fire in my soul to bring back the sacred into the world." (14:05) On the Shadow: "You can turn the poison into medicine because the change in the integration is saying, ‘Okay, so this is the symptom.'” (37:07) Resources Mentioned: Book: Dancing in the Flames by Marion Woodman and Elinor Dickinson (available on Amazon, eBay, and Internet Archive). Pythian Mystery School: pythianmysteryschool.com Podcast: Pause with Pythian (on YouTube as Pythian Priestess). Tarot Readings: Etsy (search "Pythian Priestess"). Social Media: TikTok, Instagram, Blue Sky, YouTube (@PythianPriestess). Actionable Takeaways: Confront Your Soul: Try Ashley's mirror-gazing ritual with a candle and incense to see beyond your mask (28:38). Uncover the Unconscious: Use a scrying bowl with an invocation to reveal unhealed wounds, then act on the insights (30:11). Honor Your Shadow: Recognize rage, jealousy, or pain as parts of you needing compassion, not rejection (33:50). Embrace Fierce Love: Reflect on how suffering has forged your resilience, drawing inspiration from Black Isis or Kali (16:06). Join the Journey: Explore Ashley's free meditations on Pause with Pythian or enroll in the Pythian Mystery School (47:32). Closing Thoughts: This episode is a bold call to reclaim the sacred feminine in its entirety—fierce, wild, and whole. Ashley M. Ryan, as Pythian Priestess, challenges listeners to move beyond superficial spirituality and embrace the transformative power of the dark goddess. Whether through rituals, shadow work, or her teachings at the Pythian Mystery School, she offers a path to truth and resilience in a world craving balance.
If 'power' is the extent to which we each are able to bring about our intentions in the world, then our power matters. But there are many different ways to exercise power - as a parent, colleague, friend - in any role where our actions influence others. What does it take to recognise how we're exercising the power we have? Are we acting from our fearful parts or from that which is solid, genuine and faithful to life? Perhaps the deeper invitation is to centre our power around love itself - whether fierce or gentle - rather than around our attempts to dominate and control. It's the energy of knowing that you are who you are, and therefore speaking and acting from your authentic self. It doesn't matter what your work is—if you're a teacher or a nurse or whatever; it is your presence that's the power. It's not power over anybody else. It's just the expression of who you are. Power in the sense of controlling somebody else is different from personal presence. Love is the real power. It's the energy that cherishes. The more you work with that energy, the more you will see how people respond naturally to it, and the more you'll want to use it. It brings out your creativity, and helps everyone around you flower. Your children, the people you work with - everyone blooms. Marion Woodman Photo by Jessica Alves on Unsplash
To continue the idea of ‘Type Ensouled', Sammy and Kristen reflect on their own dreams and how they've correlated with their personality and life experiences. We use the power of stories and myth to amplify the purpose of our personal enneagram types. To be able to ‘catch the thread' of our human and soul path became a fun and interesting attempt to play with the creative energies that are present. “Storytelling is at the heart of life... In finding our own story, we assemble all the parts of ourselves. Whatever kind of mess we have made of it, we can somehow see the totality of who we are and recognize how our blunderings are related. We can own what we did and value who we are, not because of the outcome but because of the soul story that propelled us.” - Marion Woodman

To continue the topic of the head center, we discuss how metaphor can be a way to ‘open' us up to different narratives or perspectives. When bringing in the aspect of ‘play' to dreams, symbols can feel more autonomous and alive, giving us a chance to be impacted and moved by them. Kristen and Sammy talk about their own experiences ‘playing' and being fascinated by metaphor, tying in previous topics from the head center. Kristen also talks about a recent experience with a shift from looking at a dream in a flat way as opposed to a creative and metaphorical way. Resources; ‘The Ravaged Bridegroom' - Marion Woodman

I'm so excited for this conversation with my mentor Sil Read in this special birthday episode about stepping into the next part of your life. What is it about midlife? Action is where change happens. But here's the thing: when we have a goal, a wish, a desire bubbling up in us, it can feel really huge. Sometimes we stop ourselves in our tracks based on how huge our desire feels. Change needs action, but it doesn't need huge action. When we focus on the next step, the next Doable Change that we can integrate into our lives, we don't get stuck and we create momentum. Choose one Doable Change that resonates with you today and really play with it. Fit it into your life, your days, make it work for you — then move on to your next Doable Change. Here are Three Doable Changes from this conversation: HOLD OPPOSITES. You can hold an inner or outer conflict quietly instead of trying to resolve it quickly. Start by asking yourself: What opposites am I holding today? Holding that conflict can help birth the new. Start with identifying your opposites...
Remnants of Humanity: Journey Throughout Our Sacred Earth to Restore Balance Held Within the Feminine Dimension by Christine Van Camp ZeccaThe twenty-first century is facing worldwide disintegration. The spiritual systems are falling apart, revealing the lack of all that used to sustain humanity as notions of separation prevail. However, inclusion is essential for survival. Profound love is more powerful than hate, but those in power amplify/ hate, destroying humanity in the process. After the collapse of Western civilization in North America, survivors grounded in healing love flee south. Seven millennia later, an isolated outpost of women wants to share its hard-earned wisdom. These earth-based shamans are losing the energy to continue, unless they can connect with the Underworld of Dreaming Nature to find suitable males to join them. Their quest attracts other “remnants” that also wish to regenerate the planet and return joy to the world. Paradigm shifts are required to reinvigorate the inevitable toxic collapse of a corrupted society, hope rests in the hands of feminine energy and hard-earned wisdom. We answer a listener's question that came along in time for us to talk about the body center and how it relates to the sexual instinct and sexuality. We talk about what it means to feel attraction and desire and how that projection (like we discovered with anger) can help us develop a relationship to our bodies as the container of these experiences, and show us our path to individuation. Ellen Emmet is a psychotherapist, facilitator of Authentic Movement, and offers meetings in The Awakening Body: Yoga meditations in the tradition of non-duality and Kashmir Shivaism that she learnt from her teachers Francis Lucille and Eric Baret. She offers webinars and residential retreats. Her offering is an exploration of our true nature at the level of tactility and feelings, but also an inquiry into the hidden corners of the psyche to invite more wholeness into our lives. More specifically, The Awakening Body meetings focus on the body, “allowing it to be our mirror and our pathway, our prayer and our altar, and ultimately the shining expression of this shared identity.” Our conversation explores the complex topic of nonduality and the shadow. Ellen's growing intuition matched my own, that nondual teachings can often be used as a way to escape difficult emotions or feelings, or even disown the body, and overlook or avoid the shadow. With training in Jungian philosophy, including working directly with Jungian analyst Marion Woodman, Ellen brings wisdom and openness to exploring this oversight. Topics include connecting to the wisdom of the body, relational alchemy, the pain of separation, nonduality as a hiding place, ever-present nature of peace, the path of devotion, the role of the divine feminine, and ways to avoid ego inflation. This week's show is with William Apple. William Apple is a Psychological and Spiritual Mentor, as well as a Psychodynamic Coach. The Foundation of his Work is rooted in Carl Jung's Concept of “Individuation”, and takes a new approach towards fostering a conscious relationship with that Process by quantifying a Depth Psychological and Psychoanalytic approach to the Inner Child as a Precursor to Shadow Work. He is Certified in CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and Polyvagal Theory, and his Inner Child Work is strongly influenced by Alice Miller, D.W. Winnicott, Jacque Lacan, Marion Woodman, Magda Gerber, Bell Hooks, and many others. In this conversation, William and I explored the unfolding journey of creating a relationship with the inner child, how confronting it can feel to see how much of our life has been created from the wounding of the child, and how we can be with that in an accepting and accountable way, and lastly and maybe surprisingly, given what a gloomy picture I may have just painted - how it can be a beautiful and playful experience! We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: The inner child is all the wounded parts of us that have been fractured through conditioning and the parts of us that have been created as coping mechanisms as a result The fish metaphor that arose is one that I think is very helpful in allowing us to see the depths of the conditioning - as William said “We've been led to believe we're fish!” I loved what William said about how those of us who have been in the work for many years, it's not been a waste of time - it's actually a map back to ourselves if we look at the work and our fantasies about it, it can reveal so much about our wounds. We can continue doing that work, with awareness and actually enjoying the play! This week I spoke with Sam Burton. He's an artist originally from Utah now living in my neighborhood in LA, which is how we met. He's an incredible musician and I loved talking to him. Sam came over a few weeks ago and we drank tea and talked about everything from how he began playing music, to how he approaches collaboration, craft, and creativity. He's deeply introspective and after studying Jungian psychology, he began reading tarot for himself and others. We spoke about how he got into typology, Myers-Briggs, and dream work and how that impacts his songwriting. He's candid about how “perfection bubbles” burst, the value of connection, and how constructive feedback given well has shaped his sound. We get into what he's learned recently about sustaining a career in in the music business, touring, maintaining a beginner's mind, processing external validation and criticism, plus his thoughts on love, nature, friendship, the music that shaped him, and more. I especially loved this one, Sam is humble, easy to talk to, and full of wisdom. Let us know if you listen. Winnicott, Jacque Lacan, Marion Woodman, Magda Gerber, Bell Hooks, and many others. In this conversation, William and I explored, Phantasy vs Fantasy, what is meant by each, how to know which you're engaging in, and how to work with them consciously. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: Phantasy means the spectres of the past are being projected onto the world, whereas Fantasy means what we generally think of the word - conscious engagement of imagining things (and being honest and accountable about that). Once this distinction between the two types is clear, it allows us to see more clearly how we show up in the world, not just to others but to ourselves. We rarely see others for who they are, we see them for who we phantasise them to be. Projections are the non-verbal hopes, dreams and expectations of what we hope that world will be like so we can feel safe. The hopes, dreams and expectations are coming from the spectres of the past - which are unmet needs from childhood which are now being projected out onto others and the world. The work of consciously working with our phantasies means being accountable for them, without shame, blame and guilt. Reclaiming and remembering how to consciously fantasise with our active imagination, particularly with our projections, can be so healing and also fun! In those significant life-changing moments, like becoming a parent or losing a parent, it's very easy to feel lost and ungrounded. We might think to ourselves, “Ceremony could maybe be a useful thing right now, but where do I start?” As the saying goes, there's an app for that and it's beautiful. This is Shame Piñata. I'm Colleen Thomas. Welcome to Shame Piñata, where we talk about creating rites of passage for real-life transitions. Today I'm excited to invite you to join me on a behind-the-scenes look into Be Ceremonial, the world's first ceremony creation platform. It's an app you can download from the App or the Google Play Store and it lets you build simple, customizable ceremonies for any purpose. Just to give you a sense of how it works, I'm going to open the app on my phone right now and tell you what I see. So on the homescreen is a list of latest offerings including new ceremonies and free virtual workshops. If I click on the “Create” button, I can open a free sample ceremony and customize that or I can choose from a list of ceremonies with a defined topic, including trying to conceive, mother blessing, miscarriage, abortion, wedding, divorce, terminal diagnosis, or sitting vigil - and that's only a partial list. Okay, so here's how building a ceremony works. If I click into the free sample ceremony, I'm asked to choose if this ceremony will be for me or for someone else (I think it's cool that you can actually gift a ceremony to a friend). Then I'm asked to choose if it will be me doing it alone, with other people, or virtually. And then I can begin building my ceremony which is structured in 5 parts: opening, past, present, future, and closing. For the opening, the app gives me three choices: Opening Space, Candle Lighting, and Three Breaths. I can click into any of these to see what they're about, what materials and preparation I'd need to do them, and a list of steps to follow. And I can look through all of the offerings until I've found the flow that works best for me. For example, I might choose to take 3 breaths to open my ceremony, release the past with a fire release ritual, take a ritual walk to honor the present, and then ceremonially cross a threshold to step into my new future, and finally close with a water ceremony. Once I've chosen all of the components, they will be available as a step-by-step list that I can have with me as I prepare and actually hold the ceremony. It's actually very cool and user friendly. And it takes some of the guesswork (and groundwork, really) out of building a ceremony so that I can really focus on what is moving in me and choose ritual components that match that flow. Now that we've taken a deep dive into the app itself, let's come back out to the bigger picture so I can bring you into a conversation I had last spring with Megan Sheldon, the co-founder and CEO of Be Ceremonial. Here's a listen. Thomas: I'm curious, how did you find your way to ceremony in life? Sheldon: I've always been a community seeker, a connector, a convener. I was recently at a retreat that I was hosting around ritual and a girlfriend of mine from high school was telling me about these, you know, we didn't… we didn't call it ceremonies then. But she's like, “You would host these gatherings and you were so intentional in the questions you would ask and the way you would bring people together.” She was the first of any of my friends to have a baby. And she remembers, I had forgotten about this, but she remembered I gathered all of her girlfriends around in the room and I'd found this little owl shaker and I passed it around and asked everybody to infuse it with, well, you know, wishes and blessings for her. And that was, you know, 12 or 13 years ago. So I'm constantly reminded that this path hasn't been an A to B kind of path, it's been an unfolding. When I was 20 years old, my mom went through breast cancer. And my mom and I are very close. And I was living in Montreal and she was here in Vancouver. And I remember getting the phone call from her and just like every instinct in me wanted to just get on a plane and come home and be with her. But she didn't want that. She… I was in the middle of exams and she really needed me to stay where I was, so she could focus on herself. But what she ended up doing, I now see as ritual, is she would find these books, and she was introduced to Yungian kind of theory and Marion Woodman and Women who Run with the Wolves and all of these books that, you know, she was just discovering, and she would buy two copies, and she would send me one in Montreal, and I remember I'd get these books and I would be reading them at the same time she was reading them on the other coast of Canada. And opening up this kind of world of the Divine Feminine and what it means to connect with your Ancestors and your roots and your heritage. And I'm… a white settler stolen lands here in Canada and I have really struggled with my place in this… in this part of the world. And where do I fit? Where do I belong? I think that need for belonging has been a huge theme in my life. And these books kind of taught me how to connect with that part of myself. And with my mom and with her mom and with her mother's mother and this beautiful lineage of women and men. So it's a tricky question and one that continues to evolve. But if I am being completely honest with myself, I have always been ceremonial, I just was never given the language or the permission to kind of see myself that way. So I've had to really come into it on my own and reclaim that space in a way that feels like me. Megan echoed one of my own ideas about ritual, that of it be self-organizing. That we know how do ritual together, it is one of our inherent gifts. We might have just forgotten. Sheldon: It's so interesting because people always say to me, “Oh, I could never do what you do. I could never do this!” And I think, “Do what? This was just like… I'm actually not doing…” I always say to people, “I'm actually not doing this, I'm setting the container, you know, I'm offering the invite...” I've studied a lot under the Art of Hosting - I don't know if you know it - it's like a global-wide kind of way of gathering people and their philosophy is like, the invitation is everything. If you can send out an invite and let people know what to expect and what to prepare and how to feel empowered in the space so that they're not having to look for the leader like, “Who's in charge?” Like, that's… that's one of the worst ways to convene is to have that hierarchy. So the idea of the Circle Way of having everybody step in and be responsible for co-creating the ceremony, the ritual environment has always guided me. And I'm a firm believer, and I say that every time I can be in a ceremony or a retreat, or rituals with friends, I, you know, I focus on the invitation, and I say, we were all stepped into this and we are now going to co-create this space together. And if you need to be quiet, if you need to walk away, if you need to scream, if you need to do anything that is okay. Like this is you're making your own experience. And I think that's just a way of thinking that we haven't really been taught in our capitalistic patriarchal culture of, you know, the top-down, right? This feels rebellious for a lot of people so yeah… Thomas: And it's kind of the same principle with the app, right? Because you've created this technology that people can... there's tools, there's framework, there's structure, there's examples, there's ideas, all this kind of thing…. But you're not there helping somebody in person, helping somebody create a ceremony and they can create a ceremony… Like, I created two today that are really important to me but I'm not ready to do them yet but I have the framework set for when I'm ready to step into them. And so you won't be with me when I do them. I mean, unless I could call you later and talk to me because I know you… Sheldon: Please! Thomas: …but like, you won't really be there with me. But yeah… you've created the… you've given the invitation and you've created the container. Sheldon: Yeah, and it took me a long time to see how ritual and ceremony, which for me is so sacred and so precious and so important in my life and in the lives of those that I serve and that I work with to see it as, you know, bridging with technology. So backtrack a little bit, my husband and I decided to get married eight or nine years ago now and we looked at the wedding kind of template that was in front of us and we've been to so many weddings before, and they were so lovely and so wonderful. And they weren't us. I never was like… oh… this felt exactly like me because it was exactly like my friend or my family member. So I really wanted to learn how to intentionally craft a wedding that represented our values. So that was our first ceremony to co-create together and I think we did a really wonderful job. And shortly after our wedding, we tried to get pregnant and we did. And, you know, seven weeks later, we miscarried. And then we got pregnant again and miscarried. And a third time, miscarried. And each time it was like this invisible loss that nobody knew. It was just, I mean… this was seven years ago. So it was just starting to kind of get a little bit more traction in terms of the media and people talking about it a little bit more, but nobody was talking about a ceremony where I could honor and say goodbye. I was never even offered any of the remains from the hospitals after my DNC procedures. It just… I know now I could have asked for it and they would have had to have given it to me. I didn't know that then. I didn't know my… what I was allowed to do. Everything felt so kind of, you know, the health care system owned everything, right? You don't ever think of it as being something there that you can challenge or that you can confront. Thomas: Yeah. Sheldon: So I started to create my own rituals around my loss. And my husband, Johan and I, we created our own rituals and ceremonies to acknowledge not only the loss of life, but also the loss of the stories we'd started to tell ourselves. I had a lot of growing anxiety. What was happening? Why was my body doing this? Will I ever get pregnant? You know, it was in my mid to late 30s at that point, so that… you know, there was this time pressure that was both external and internal. Yeah, I think that time for me it was really about learning how these things that I naturally wanted and needed did in my life were rituals. It was ceremony. It was, you know… I wanted to sit with my girlfriends and not only share my story, but hear their story. I wanted to, you know, every year on a due date or on a loss date, I wanted to have something that I could do that would connect me so that I wouldn't forget that I wouldn't grow… grow further away from it. Thomas: At the same time that Megan and Johan were dealing with pregnancy loss, they were also losing Johan's father to ALS. Sheldon: There were so many invisible moments along that journey that we did not know how to recognize. You know, a diagnosis when you first… when he first received it, but when he first told us like, what do you do in those moments? How do you bring ritual and bring ceremony to that moment when the floor comes crashing out from underneath you? And then over the next, you know, six months and year and two years as he started to lose his capacities and we started to lose that kind of feeling of hope for the future and… There were so many of those moments that I did not know, at the time I could have brought ritual into, I could have been kind of slowly building out that kind of legacy. So we went through that experience. And then when the pandemic hit and my husband was, you know, found himself at home, and I really wanted to imagine something new. He's a problem solver. He's like, “I just want to build something that will help people.” That's just has been his driver. It has been a really interesting experience to bridge ceremony with technology and one that I continue to learn about. But I'll get emails from people on a weekly basis about how, you know, they were gifted something through this experience, or they discovered something. They were able to honor, you know, a death anniversary in a way that they never thought was possible. And I know for 100% of… I know without a doubt that I would never have crossed paths with that person had it not been through technology. You know, they'll be in Australia, or Belgium, or St. Louis and they'll be reaching out because this app touched them in a certain way, it impacted their experience. So yeah. Thomas: Wow, you're inspiring me now. I'm thinking I have a lot of my good friends, I have their death anniversaries on my calendar so I remember to reach out to them. I would love to share your app with them. [MUSIC Thomas: So as people check out the app and they get started with it, do you have any guidance for them on how to start the process? Sheldon: Yeah. So the app is Be Ceremonial and you are invited in and there's two pillars that make up the app environment. And one is the ability to create your own ceremony, like a DIY approach. And we started with the birth and death aspects, the two areas of life, because they're the two thresholds. They're usually the places where people are seeking ceremony the most. They… you know, they have a miscarriage or they find out they're pregnant, or they, you know, they want to honor, you know, the end of their breastfeeding journey. There's something that happened in that kind of beginning of life stage or the end of life. You know, they lost a parent, or a death anniversary's coming up, or they have been hanging on to these ashes from a cremation and they don't know what to do with them. So we really started to populate the app with these ceremonies that you could create for yourself around birth and death. And we are now in the midst of bridging out the life cycle. So, I am a Life Cycle Celebrant. I work with people on ceremonies around mastectomies and hysterectomies. Ceremonies around moving into a new home or leaving a childhood home. I've worked with people who have been fired and lost a job and they wanted to create a ceremony to kind of honor what that job brought them and also kind of burn in the fire the things that they wanted to never do again. There are so many points along the lifecycle, both visible and invisible, that deserve to be ritualized. They deserve to have that kind of ceremonial intention built into it. So that's, that's the pillar one that's like one side of the app experience is to be able to create your ceremonies and some people might come in and know exactly what they want and they just want to create a ceremony around a death anniversary, and they can just, you know, pay per use so it's a single-time purchase that they want. And then other people are really seeking something more. They're really wanting to understand their own relationship with ritual and ceremony. Or they're a care provider. We've got a lot of death doulas and birth doulas and hospice volunteers, midwives, naturopath counselors using our app and they create ceremonies for their clients and their patients. So they're using this as a tool that they can kind of bring to the people that they work with. I've also got a lot of celebrants using this, so there's a wedding ceremony in there and if you are, celebrate, and you've got a new client, and you want to kind of give them some ideas as to what's possible in terms of ritual, you can create a wedding ceremony that you then send to them and they can pick and choose rituals they like. You can then add new ones, you can create your own, you can draw… You know, it's the biggest thing to remind yourself there is that it's you know, you don't need to follow this word for word. It's just a guide to inspire you. I think of it like a blueprint. The other side… the other pillar of the app which we're really starting to build out this year is the learning environment. So I've hosted tons of online workshops and courses I ran last year, had about 120 students come through a six week training that we offered around end-of-life rituals. And I want to take all of those little mini workshops and build them into the app environment. So for the people that are the members, the subscribers (you can have a monthly or yearly subscription), I want there to be a place where they can go and think, “Oh, gosh, if a client just reached out, reached out or a friend reached out, and you know, they have a child who died.” And they really want to acknowledge the you know, the grief that the family and the friends might be holding. And I want to be able to create a ceremony workshop that explores kids' relationship with grief, and how to explore that.” You know, on the other side of it, maybe there's something around, you know, I've hosted a lot of divorce ceremonies, which has been really interesting for people. And everybody's always like, “Oh, I want to know more, I want to know what what else I can learn about this and how else this can be done and where the, you know, what other cultures are doing” So being able to look at the… the learning environment as a place to have that, that ability to go deeper if and when you choose. I think is really exciting for me, and for a lot of the people that have reached out because I think that there's, you know, the people that come in, and they just want something quick and they want something now and they know, you know, they don't need a whole lot of hand holding. And then there's the people that really want to build a community here and they want to share back their story after they created a ceremony so that it might inspire someone else. And that's my big hope with where Be Ceremonial can grow is that it will become, you know, “This is us. This is our invitation. We've been a catalyst, we've created this framework. Now let's let the community populate it. Let's let people step up and make this their own space. Let's allow this to be a place that connects us and inspires us when we hear stories from people around the world and how they took the same five rituals that I took and yet their ceremony turned out so differently. That's so interesting. I want to hear about that…” And that's the storyteller in me is just wanting to create a space where those stories can be celebrated and witnessed. Thomas: That's wonderful. Well, I feel like what you've created with this, the two of you, it's just such a gift. So on behalf of, I don't know, everybody everywhere, I just want to thank you so much. And I want to thank you for taking time out of your day to join me in this exploration of Megan and Johan's work at Be Ceremonial. I hope that a piece of Megan's story, either a moment of creating ritual to honor a life transition or her overall entrepreneurial spirit has inspired you as it has inspired me. Megan will be back soon to speak more about slow technology and how she is using ritual to transition from pandemic to endemic. A voicemail from Thiago in Brazil and a direct message from Noura in Egypt reminded me why I started this podcast in the first place and why so many of us resonate with the concept of feeling starved at a spiritual level – constantly grappling with feelings of brokenness and perpetual emptiness. There's only one way out of the pits of hell caused by this thinking: zooming the f*ck out. If you have a question you'd like me to answer on a future episode, you can submit it via email at backfromtheborderline@gmail.com or record a voicemail at backfromtheborderline.com. (I don't reply to emails/voicemails directly.) If you want to learn more about zooming out and considering higher/broader perspectives, I've included a few places to start below. In this episode, which originally aired in radio format on October 27th, 2022, I revisit the book Addiction to Perfection, by Marion Woodman. The episode I made in 2021 about the first half of this book has received more downloads than any other by a long shot, so I thought listeners might enjoy learning about the ideas that Woodman explores in the second half. I discuss how the masculine and feminine principles are out of balance in this society, and how we as individuals can bring more of the conscious feminine into our lives. The word "perfect" means that something is completely and thoroughly done, which we humans will only be when we're dead, so let's embrace the imperfection of being ALIVE and stop letting the unconscious masculine principle prematurely deaden us! Let's remember that any imperfections we possess, exist within creation itself.

The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life
Content Warning: Mentions suicide, substance use, bereavement, language. Sarah Durham Wilson is the author of Maiden to Mother: Unlocking Our Archetypal Journey into the Mature Feminine. Her own mother died when Sarah was just a teenager and life sort of spiralled from there for a while. She came to professional success through journalism and her stints writing for the likes of Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Spin Magazine. She also found her voice on social media a decade ago as Do It Girl, a popular blog-facebook presence for young women seeking a spiritual experience. But it was hitting rock bottom, struggling with substance use and just kind of chaotic dysfunction that Sarah came to understand the trauma of being an Unmothered Woman. She has since deepened her studies, diving into the works of Marion Woodman and apprenticing to the myths of Inanna and Ereshkigal, devoting herself to the work of elevating the Mature Feminine as well as her activism work, intersectional feminism, decolonization, divesting from whiteness, and eradication of the patriarchy. Check out Sarah's website, themotherspirit.com Plus her Instagram and her book. Support the women of Iran.
Morning Star Woman & Ivan the Youngest Son is, in its original bones, my own telling of the Russian fairytale "The Maiden Tsar," as explored by Robert Bly and Marion Woodman in their book The Maiden King. I will admit, however, that I've taken it and run with it. You will see flashes as far afield as the Fisher King of Arthurian legend, and admittedly a few further too. And you will see that its Maiden Tsar, its swan queen, became merged with my imaginings of Venus in her recent descent below the rim of the horizon, out of sight, in mid-September, as if Venus's passage through the underworld were the story of a woman coming down to earth, becoming human. Today she meets the heart of the Sun, and begins climbing toward evening. So this is a story of swan women and eggs and fishermen, of wise old men in huts and the oldest woman in the world who lives in the moon; of how to mend broken things; of learning how to love, and love well. It is a prayer for fatherlines and motherlines and heartlines, a prayer for all the people I love, a prayer for the women and men in the streets of Iran standing and fighting for their freedom and the radiance of their lives, a prayer for something we perhaps all together have nearly forgotten, a prayer for what we cannot afford to lose, together on this Ark, our holy ground, our home. In my introduction, I mention the release of a new collection of mine that steps deeper into the movements of Venus as well as my own heart. Linsteadt. This podcast is dedicated to Kalliope, primordial and first Muse of epic poetry and ecstatic song in ancient Greece. This podcast is a place of sanctuary for her oldest stories. It is a return to the wild garden, to the spring, to the ground of being & the source of inspiration in the Earth. Here, we honor Kalliope as Muse of Earth. Here, you will find some of the stories beneath the stories of Old Europe: short fictional/poetic pieces written and read by Sylvia that explore elements of indigenous Old European mythology, with a focus on pre-Hellenic (pre-Patriarchal) Greece. Come sit with us in the honeyed light, among the ripe pomegranates, in Kalliope's sanctuary, where the stories that arise directly from the ground of being and lifeforce can still be safely told and celebrated. Come lean against the sun-warmed stones, with the fragrance of propolis & myrrh in the air, and the trees heavy with autumn quince. This is the garden before the fall, a sanctuary for all hearts in this time. Join us, and be revived. ABOUT SYLVIA V. LINSTEADT: Sylvia V. In this episode, which originally aired on November 18th, 2021, I explore some of the ideas presented in Marion Woodman's 1982 book, Addiction to Perfection. How do you feel toward your feminine side? People who identify as male, this question applies to you, too! We all have masculine and feminine principles working within us, but in this society the masculine is running the show. Woodman was a Jungian analyst whose work focused on reviving what she called the "conscious feminine." This revival is needed now more than ever! Masculine energy is not bad in and of itself, but it must be balanced with the feminine or things go haywire. We need more yin with our yang! More anima with our animus! And hey -- listening is an inherently feminine skill, so you can practice it by tuning in. Extra anima points for those who listen while doing nothing else! The feminine principle is not a fan of multi-tasking...
In this episode we explore a potential Nietzschean revaluation of all values in the form of a distinction. If we separate the ideas of femininity and masculinity from females and males, we are left with two possible revaluations. There is the fight over the respective value of men and women in society; this is the classical struggle of historical Feminism. In this episode we are going to call this the Womanist struggle. There is another, deeper, struggle that has yet to be wrestled with on a substantial level: the distinction between the values of masculinity and of femininity. With that distinction in mind we can form a distinction between Masculinism and Feminism. Masculinism is the triumph of Masculine values in society. Feminism is the triumph of Feminine values in society. Seen through this lens, Womanism (the historical movement we usually call Feminism) is in fact a Masculinist movement.____________________⭐ Support the channel (thank you!) ▶ Patreon: https://patreon.com/thelivingphilosophy ▶ Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/thelivingphilosophy________________
“If I don't feel invisible to myself, then I don't care what the culture thinks about me.” – Sil Reynolds Loving your life has more to do with your inner life than your outer circumstances. But most of us try to change the outside. In this episode, I'm talking with Sil Reynolds, my mentor and an “elder” in my circle, about transforming from the inside out. Do you ever hear work-life balance and feel like it's one more thing you are supposed to “do” or make happen? Sil and I discuss the feeling of inner balance and the balance of energies between masculine and feminine or doing and being — and how we need both for balance. The overemphasis of masculine qualities, like logic over feeling, have been detrimental to all of us. Bringing the two together, like we do in FLOW where we start with feelings and a creative process and then move into logic and time, is essential for balance. We talk about: A new way of thinking about the patriarchy and its effects on all of us What we learned from the COVID slowdown Resisting the masculine and learning to find the sweet spot where masculine and feminine energy work together in planning The value of multi-generational conversations and the power of learning from someone who has done the work before you Celebrating yourself and not looking for external validation Living into your future self ABOUT SIL Sil Reynolds is a mother, author, teacher, and a coach for women. She is proud to call herself an elder. Sil brings 40-years of experience working with women to her coaching and teaching: experience as a nurse practitioner, psychotherapist, and workshop leader. Sil graduated from Brown University where she majored in Women's Studies. How you want to feel is the starting point to balance and transformation. You do need to put things into time, but too many people do that without thinking about how they want to feel first. Let your feelings lead. PLAN TIME FOR SPACE. That may sound counterintuitive, but we need to slow down. We need space in our lives, and it doesn't just happen. Look at your calendar for next week. Block off time for space, to be instead of do. To see what happens when you slow down. Once you block off the space, put a firm boundary around it. MAKE AN AGREEMENT WITH YOUR FUTURE SELF. Who will you be in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? How will you feel? What will your home be like? What will your ideal day be like? What is one thing you can do to bring that into action in the next 90 days? Get more journaling prompts and ideas here: https://plansimple.com/planning-with-purpose/ (Planning with Purpose).
In today's episode I discuss a few quotes from Marion Woodman. In particular, "there is no such things as failure except betrayal of the process." I discuss how our "good performer" persona can cloud the psychological process from spontaneously unfolding and disrupting the organic nature of the process. Dialoguing with Janice Stieber Rous on the importance of the body in how we know what we know. Janice has been dancing since she was five and attended the Martha Graham School until the age of 21. She graduated from the American Center of the Alexander Technique in 1981 and has been teaching classes in Stough Breathing Coordination, Yoga and the Alexander Technique in New York City, Orlando, Florida, Ireland and Israel ever since. Janice created Body Dialogue because she was in search of a practice to integrate all of her different studies, thereby effectively combining Alexander Technique, breathing and yoga. She also annually hosts a women's retreat based in the practice of Body Soul Rhythms Leadership Program, a program with Marion Woodman that Janice graduated from in 2003. https://bodydialogues.com/
In this wonderful talk, Joan Harcourt brings the wisdom of Marion Woodman, Jean Shinoda Bolen, Jane Prétat as well as her own life experience and work with older women's groups to the powerful image of the Crone. Once a source of respect, healing and wisdom, with the rise of patriarchy the image of the Crone was diminished and demonised. However, as Joan says, the word ‘Crone' is derived from Corona, the word for Crown. With age and experience, the Crone conveys an ability to sit with conflict; to stay with embodied and imaginal knowing and allow the energy of grounded reality and new options to arise for both women and men.
I once had the opportunity to meet the mayor of Alsace, a region in eastern France where the Alsatian language is pretty well dead. The mayor spoke to me about a book that he had written which talked about endings. He wanted to explore the idea of a beautiful end. This idea of a beautiful end never left me. It has guided me in many parts of my life when I have decided to end certain careers or move on from certain jobs. It has always felt important to really pay attention to what was driving me and in many ways to block out other people's perceptions and any kind of normative or collective ideas of what I should or shouldn't do. Today's podcast in some ways will be about me deciding to pause the podcast, potentially end it for a while, and take some time to restore my creative energies. Many of you will have heard of the quite famous Canadian analyst Marion Woodman. She passed away a few years ago but she was iconic. I was once sitting in one of her lectures and she said, “The greatest affront to the ego is the self.” In that sentence, she's referring to the capital “S” self which was a concept of Carl Gustav Jung. The concept described the complete and whole repository of a human being. This included the unconscious parts of us that we can't consciously access. The ego was often tethered to the self but could at various points in our life move away from or become dissociated from the self so that we sometimes come out of contact with this rich repository of who we are. For me, this always connects with the Greek idea of Chronos and Kairos, Chronos being the time that we are aware of (such as looking at one's watch and knowing that it is one in the afternoon) and Kairos representing a kind of other time that we are unaware of. It also makes me think of Wolfgang Giegerich's concept of the soul's logical life: there is a kind of logic in our lives that confronts our conscious awareness. We may make decisions to do something, to go somewhere, to plan a trip, or to study a subject. We may think everything is going to go in a particular way and, as we know, life intervenes. There is that very cute expression that exists in many languages: “One thinks and God laughs.” I know that in terms of building this podcast, bringing on guests that have really touched me, reaching out to you, and delving into subject areas that are very close to my heart, this is something that I have done out of love. But I can also tell that it has come to a natural end for now. There's been a conflict there between an expectation that I set for myself and that others have had for me and an internal rhythm that is certainly demanding that I take a break. These moments (moments when you build something or have a particular architecture and other voices that are swimming around begin to grow in power and clarity and go against a conscious attempt in life) are quite unnerving. So welcome to this year's last installment as we head into the holiday season. Welcome to a podcast where I'll take some time to open up with you, explore what it means to end things, and share some of my thoughts on why this is often the hardest thing but a very important thing that we must do. Show Highlights: What happens when we don't listen to the little voice inside of us. Why we resent in-depth processes of healing. How capitalism has pervaded holidays. What individuation is. How the noise of the collective drowns out our individual subjectivity. The tension between what we feel as individuals and what the collective wants. Why endings can be beautiful. How to withstand and even celebrate endings. Why there doesn't always have to be a new beginning to every end. Why endings aren't failures. We sat down to discuss Shadow School—the theme for October's 30-Day Virtual Yoga Challenge in this week's episode. With seven themes to anchor in the wild and intense emotions of the shadow, Clara and Stephanie shared their perspective of the shadow self and why exploring the darker aspects of the self is so important. Themes of Shadow School: Fear, Guilt, Grief, Shame, Duplicity, Illusion, Attachment. More on Shadow School: “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate.” — Carl Jung. Shadow School is your summons to acknowledge your wild side, surface intense emotions, and expunge the parts of yourself you no longer need. You are ready to face the core beliefs, motivations, desires, and aspirations that bring darkness and lightness into your life. We must eat our own shadow—haul it up from out of the pit and develop a conscious connection with it. Doing so not only prevents our unacknowledged darkness from haunting our thoughts and distorting our relationships; it also liberates tremendous psychic energy. — Excerpt from Rob Brezsny's Shadow School. Hello and Happy Memorial Day! Today I spend some time honoring those who've served and set the stage for thinking of a better way of resolving conflict. First part is really stepping into the Chrysalis so that we can re-emerge as something new, a society with a greater balance between the feminine and the masculine, but first I offer some thoughts on the patriarchal nature of war and the military including an analysis of the language used that is unsurprisingly phallic in nature. In honor of the Chrysalis and the feminine, I read from Marion Woodman's The Pregnant Virgin and also little snippets from Dancing in the Flames. I'd love to hear your thoughts about all of this!Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFY | STITCHERITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCASTITCHER: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/she-wants/i-want-what-she-has?refid=stpr'Follow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcastTWITTER * https://twitter.com/wantwhatshehas
What if we met our children with this kind of wonder of who are you and how can I help you become that person? – Sil Reynolds On this episode of the Plan Simple Podcast, I’m really excited to talk with mothering and mothering expert, Sil Reynolds. Sil is the co-author with her daughter, Eliza Reynolds, of Mothering and Daughtering: Keeping Your Bond Strong Through the Teen Years. The teen/tween years can be a confusing mothering time, especially because we get the message that this is a time of freedom for us as mothers. It’s way different than the early years, but many of us find it’s a time we really need, and want, to be there for our kids — yet society can make us feel like this is helicopter parenting. Sil is full of wisdom and experience about this time in our mothering experience, and I am so grateful to call her a mentor and teacher myself. Sil and her daughter created a way of mother-daughtering during adolescence that's invigorating instead of draining. Teen girls get such a bad rap, but Sil calls them oracles because they’re so in touch with another way of seeing. Here’s some of what we talk about on this episode: Helping our kids become the person they are, not the one we want them to be and how life-giving it is to meet your kid on the level of the soul Understanding that you are an expert in mothering your child Really being involved in your tween/teen’s life and letting them rely on you Slowing down and practicing hearing and following your intuition How there will be ruptures, misunderstandings, mistakes, arguments and the important thing is not to avoid them but to repair them The difference between mothering and parenting The importance of having a circle of other mothers supporting you BIO Sil Reynolds is a mother and a mothering expert. She is the co-author, with her daughter Eliza, of Mothering and Daughtering: Keeping Your Bond Strong Through the Teen Years. For fifteen years, the mother-daughter duo taught workshops for thousands of mothers and their preteen and teen daughters. Sil brings 40 years as a Family Nurse Practitioner and psychotherapist to her current work as a one-on-one mother-daughter coach. She was a senior student of the renowned Jungian author and analyst Marion Woodman. As a specialist in eating disorders and body image, she’s taught Geneen Roth’s Breaking Free from Emotional Eating workshops. She’s taught at Multiversity, and the Esalen, Omega, and Kripalu Institutes. But the crown jewel in her resume is, of course, her now 30 year-old daughter Eliza. Fun fact: Sil brought the first yoga class ever to Brown University as an undergrad, as Eliza calls it, this = awesome hippie lady status. Find out more and learn how to turn conflict into open-hearted connection at motheringanddaughtering.com. LINKS Sil’s Site: Motheringanddaughtering.com The Book Eliza’s Program for Teens: https://badassgirls.me/ MENTIONED LINK Parenting Simplified with Kim John Payne Gorden Neufeld books Doable Changes from this episode: REFRAME REJECTION. It is normal for adolescents to push back their parents, to test and try to figure out who they are. A lot of times parents take this as rejection. Over the next few days, notice when you feel like your tween/teen is rejecting you. What if you step back from that and reframe it as them pushing back, but not pushing you away or rejecting you. What if you challenge your assumption they won’t want to do something like family dinner, because you know they need connection? CONNECT TO OTHER MOTHERS. We weren’t meant to do this alone. It takes a village to raise a child—and support a mother. What can you do to connect with other mothers? We usually start with mothers of kids the same as our kids, but actually women at different stages can support us. Make a list of people already in your life. Make a list of people you could connect with. Reach out to one. REPAIR. It’s a relief to know that there will be ruptures, misunderstandings, mistakes, arguments, that the goal isn’t to avoid them. But it is important to repair them. Sometimes you need a little space before you repair, but give some cooling off time and then do it right away. This teaches your kids that it’s okay to make a mistake and how to handle them, and the act of repair can strengthen your relationship.

Psychopomp, which translates from Greek as “Soul Guide,” is one of Hekate’s most ancient roles. The Soul Guide is much more than the one who helps the earthly dead cross over the river to the other side, she is the midwife who assists new souls as they are born into flesh, and she reunites us with the fragments we lose along the way. Hekate calls us to take care of our own souls, and to see the soul in all things. Caring for our own souls and seeking to understand the soul in all things, draws us closer to Anima Mundi. "By soul I mean, first of all, a perspective rather than a substance, a viewpoint toward things rather than a thing itself. This perspective is reflective; it mediates events and makes differences between ourselves and everything that happens. Between us and events, between the doer and the deed, there is a reflective moment -- and soul-making means differentiating this middle ground.” From Re-Visioning Psychology by James Hillman. Perhaps the best way to be our own psychopomp is to nourish the soul through the imagination, from which we explore our dreams, express our sacred creativity, and lean into the energy of the World Soul. From the Keeping Her Keys book: (starting on p. 65, Lesson 4): The Hekate within Us To explain how we make magic, we need to talk about how Hekate as the World Soul is represented in each of us within our individual souls. In my thinking, each one of us has a soul that is a unique transcendent spirit. This soul is never born into human form but is attached to each incarnation. The soul is connected to our current existence, but we can be disconnected from it for a variety of reasons. I believe that our life's work is to become unified with our soul. By listening to the soul, we can achieve our true life's purpose. When we quiet ourselves through things like meditation, prayer and ritual, we can become better attuned to our soul-voice within. “Kill the imagination and you kill the soul. Kill the soul and you're left with a listless, apathetic creature who can become hopeless or brutal or both.” ― Marion Woodman, Bone: Dying into Life Cyndi Brannen, PhD, is a psychologist, author and teacher. She teaches and writes from the crossroads of psychology, spirituality and traditional wisdom, merging ancient knowledge with modern practices. Her work explores the journey through darkness to wholeness using the archetypes of the witch and Hekate. Her teaching focuses on personal healing through herbalism, rituals, meditations, and exploration of the deeper self. She founded The Covina Institute, a soul school dedicated to the pursuit of wholeness through structured programs of study and transcendent experiences. After years of a successful career in academia and healthcare, she transitioned to teaching and writing about reclaiming the sacred feminine through spiritual practices after she became convinced that mainstream psychology was not sufficient to lead to personal wholeness. keepingherkeys.com Keeping Her Keys SoundCloud Animara Playlist: https://soundcloud.com/user-188959581/sets/animara-meditations-journeys
This episode is a Monday Morning Musing on some interesting ideas from poet and author Robert Bly and Jungian analyst Marion Woodman. The poet Antonio Machado wrote, “All things die, and all things live forever; but our task is to die, to die making roads. Roads over the sea.” Woodman and Bly use this poem throughout their work to reference what it's like working with the unconscious, it's like building a road onto the sea. The unconscious is exactly that-completely unconscious. Woodman and Bly use the power of myth and story because it’s flexible, and not literal. Woodman and Bly do workshops together and have written books and even made a film together. Woodman recommends writing and reflecting on your dreams. In the book, The Maiden King by Marion Woodman co-wrote with Robert Bly the reader is taken through a journey to reunite the masculine and feminine. In this episode I share a few ideas that Woodman and Bly lay out in the chapter, The Inner Marriage from "The Maiden King." Support the show (http://www.mettlebrain.com/contact-1)
This episode is a short 10-minute Monday morning musing with me, Heather Miller. I read a poem by Antonio Machado called, "The Wind, One Beautiful Day." It goes like this. The wind, one brilliant day, called to my soul with an odor of jasmine. 'In return for the odor of my jasmine, I'd like all the odor of your roses.' 'I have no roses; all the flowers in my garden are dead.' 'Well then, I'll take the withered petals and the yellow leaves and the waters of the fountain.' The wind left and I wept. And I said to myself: 'What have you done with the garden that was entrusted to you?' In the last half of this episode I share my thoughts on the pandemic and loss, a few metaphors on growth, and give a recommendation for Jungian analyst Marion Woodman and Robert Bly’s work. It’s vast. Finally, I share a thought on interdependence and what can happen when we come together. Support the show (http://www.mettlebrain.com/contact-1)

Taking the fear out of the night: Coping with nightmares, de Renate Daniel. Dreams for Dummies, de Penney Peirce. Dos escritos sobre Psicología Analítica, que es el Volumen 7 de las Obras Completas de C.G. Jung. Number and Time, de Marie-Louise Von Franz. Otros Autores mencionados: Stanislav Grof, uno de los fundadores de la Psicología Transpersonal. Marion Woodman, analista junguiana, poeta y figura representativa del movimiento de la mujer (trabajos interesantes en psicología femenina y adicciones). Recursos audiovisuales: Plataforma Gaia (Netflix "espiritual"). Documental "The Way of the Dream: Marie-Louise von Franz in conversation with Fraser Boa" (feat. Marion Woodman). En caso de dudas particulares o personales, por favor, no dudéis en escribirnos para poder contactar por otros medios. ¡Muchas gracias por vuestro interés y vuestros sueños!

This week's show is Lian's All The Everything where she jams on an eclectic mix of topics, including questions from listeners. It also airs weekly live on facebook. This is where you can get up close and personal with Lian, get inside her head and see what's she's up to and thinking about. In this episode, I... * Shared what I've been up to in the past month (what I've been consuming and creating) * Dived deep into the topic: Making time for soul when time is limited “If we fail to nourish our souls, they wither, and without soul, life ceases to have meaning.... The creative process shrivels in the absence of continual dialogue with the soul. And creativity is what makes life worth living.” Marion Woodman
Marion Woodman, in her book Addiction to Perfection does a definitive job explaining that our addictions whatever they may be are symbolic of our need for Mother. Our need to reconcile either too much Mother or not enough nurturing from the human being who was our Mother. What matters to us in the beginning is to have our basic human needs met, our physical needs met but the dark side of that is when we decide that materiality is what gives our life meaning. When we begin to worship that is when we get into trouble. The second question of what is possible only comes about when someone can be as a Shaman, a healer, a counselor for us and can give us a different perspective. The job of the church is not to judge us for our human imperfections and limitations. Every crisis, every failure and every wall we run into can be the new Genesis that Christ re presents us with which is a new possibility so that we can begin again. This mp3 is a talk given by J. Pittman McGehee, D.D. on 5-17-87 at Christ Church Cathedral Sunday School class in Houston, Texas.

Informed by the Jungian depth psychological tradition through her graduate training and particularly the work of Marion Woodman and Robert Johnson, Sheryl Paul is a devotee of the unconscious. She says "our culture tells us that anxiety is the problem but the truth is that it’s the distress flare signaling that it’s time to slow down and discover what needs attention in the interior realms of self. When we shift our mindset from one that sees anxiety as the problem and evidence of brokenness to one that views it as a gift filled with wisdom, everything changes." Through her books, online courses, private sessions, and blog, Sheryl has guided thousands of people worldwide. Alanis Morissette says Sheryl has been a teacher, a sister, and an inspiring visionary in her life since her twenties. Sheryl has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, “Good Morning America” and other top media shows, and in publications around the globe. EP18: Sil Reynolds on Mothering and Daughtering “Better” (Not Easier) with More Connection and Support You are really in for a huge treat in meeting Sil Reynolds. She and I have connected intermittently over the years. Although our contacts have been brief, she has given me gems that have stuck with me over time. At a time when I felt deeply insecure about mothering and especially single mothering, she told me, a child needs ONE person to securely attach to. And she is a person you listen to and trust when she speaks. She is a wise elder, a former women’s health nurse practitioner, a coach and teacher of women and mothers and an author, together with her stellar daughter, Eliza Reynolds, of the book Mothering and Daughtering. What Sil Shares: Why it’s our job to stay at the center of our daughter’s world How mothering and daughtering can get better (not easier) during the teen years - meaning more connected, deeper, and closer. And how conflict is an opportunity for deeper connection. Her choice to mother more consciously than her mother and the process of “growing up,” confronting undernourished places internally Her thoughts on rites of passage, attachment, dependence, and interdependence The Feminine rising in men and women = we need each other The wisdom of slowing down, connecting with other women, and creating creative containers Perspectives on mothering today. Is it really harder? How we deal with raising kids in a digital age What You’ll Hear: On becoming the mother of a daughter (6:23) As a mother, it’s our job to stay at the center of our daughter’s world and not believe peers will be a better influence (7:20) It can get better in the teen years. Better doesn’t necessarily mean it feels better…(8:12) Sil on “growing up” as a mother and finding mentors and guides (9:18) Life and death cycles and rites of passage (10:58) The story of Vasilisa: An old way of relating as a mother and daughter is dying and a new way is being born (13:04) Mothering is raising your daughter to become herself (14:15) Attachment objects; vulnerable attachment requests at any age (15:35) What kind of rituals can we provide to honor rites of passage today? (17:42) On mothering and daughtering, interdependence, and attachment (20:04) Describe Feminism (with a capital F) (21:19) Feminine rising in men and women says, “Bring it on need!” (24:00) When the tears come in the circle, there’s the oracle. Let your feelings catch up with you. (26:31) Sil sharing Marion Woodman’s quote (27:29) The antidote to so many things these days is slowing down, curing the “too much, too fast, too soon” to reveal a whole other level of understanding (28:33) Is mothering harder today than it ever was? (30:02) Motherhood is exhausting because we don’t get enough help. We don’t have the natural supports we’ve always had (31:38) Don’t miss this quote! (32:40) Attachment parenting doesn’t stop in adolescence. We need to be just as involved in a different way (34:04) Examples of missing containers in our culture: sisterhood, mothering circles, etc. (34:57) On “rupture and repair” and why conflict and communication are important (38:14) How do we deal with technology and mothering? (40:25) Perspectives on raising children in a digital age through the attachment lens (42:36) On setting limits with children (47:30) Attachment doesn’t replace limits (48:02) When you’re in right relationship with your child, there’s a natural hierarchy (48:18) “If you have your child’s heart, no discipline is necessary” (48:50) About Mothering and Daughtering mothering courses and upcoming events (49:04) https://motheringanddaughtering.com Video Blog on Tech Boundaries with Deborah McNamara: https://motheringanddaughtering.com/setting-real-tech-boundaries-kid/ Hold onto Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers by Gordon Neuf, Ph.D. and Gabor Mate, MD https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/120863/hold-on-to-your-kids-by-gordon-neufeld-phd-and-gabor-mate-md/9780307361967/

Empowered Relationship Podcast: Your Relationship Resource And Guide
GUEST: CHRISTIANE PELMAS Christiane Pelmas has been in private practice as a psychotherapist since 1993. While most concerned with the connection between the human soul and the soul of The World, as inspired by the likes of Carl Jung, Marion Woodman, James Hillman and Clarissa Pinkola Estes, her work includes theory and practice from Ecopsychology, Somatics and Wilderness Therapy. She works with couples and individuals at key threshold crossings, and enjoys the initiations which accompany acute life moments. KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER: What you are expecting from your partner and your relationship? Do you want your partner and relationship to fulfill your every need? There is so much pressure on couples to “do it all” within their nuclear family. It is almost impossible to expect the dyad to be and do everything alone (i.e. two careers, child rearing, house holding, wealth building, mind-blowing sex, etc.). With the stress and expectations on our relationships to fulfilling our every need, we tend to blame and point the finger at our partner when we get let down or disappointed. When we are in a vibrant community (an active, truth-telling community of women and men) we ask less unrealistic things from our intimate partners. Just the right amount of unknown and just the right amount of uncertainty, within a foundation of security and mutual well-being, is necessary in order for us to maintain the dynamism in our partnerships. Both men and women benefit greatly from friendships within their sisterhood or brotherhood communities. When these connections are honest, authentic, meaningful, they help us heal, feel nourished, and be resourced. Intentionally creating healthy community is a form of activism. Couples who are supported by community are much more resilient, playful, curious, respectful and healthy within their relationships. "Each time a person stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends out a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." -- Robert Kennedy We start to learn how to create those ripples by studying Andrew Harvey's book The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism. As with affirmative prayer, we must practice turning away from present conditions and learn to embody a calm, expectant manner. We must not fall into a stance of anger or we inadvertently create more of the situation we are trying to change. We can create hope and then change the world because the Divine is in us. "It is our very fear of the future that distorts the now that could lead to a different future if we dared to be whole in the present." -- Marion Woodman

Elizabeth Lufty Breath-Worker is my guest. Website: http://www.venusrising.us I am grateful to be a Breathworker, weaving together many traditions into my own down-to-earth style. I was raised with yoga and pranayama as my practice, so I approach the Breath as a vehicle for enlightenment, a way to have a direct experience with your true self. I trained under Sondra Ray in India and Kate Warfield in Connecticut, and am a certified Body Harmonist of 17 years. My desire to explore the full potential of the Breath brought me to study in Peru and New Mexico, combining the Breath with the shamanic journey. I started Rebirthing Breath Meditation as a client in 1990 in Santa Fe. I found myself there after almost two years in Nicaragua as an activist in the Sandinista revolution. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and addictions, I experienced miraculous healing. Breathwork not only saved my life, it has given me a beautiful way to serve others ready to be liberated. For the past 17 years, I have enjoyed a thriving private practice in San Francisco, California. I work with people from all walks of life and maintain my own deep personal practice with the Breath as my essential healing pathway. I am a lifelong learner, meeting each client and myself with Beginner's Mind. I have been greatly inspired by my degrees in women's studies and philosophy, Marion Woodman, the spirit of Machu Picchu, my teachers in the Amazon, the daughters of the Goddess, All My Relations on the Red Road, my late mother, eternally Babaji, the Enlightenment Community, Goenka, Medicine Path, 12 Step Recovery Groups, Pema Chodron, and Sandino. It is my honor and pleasure to embody the Breath and to serve others to open to Unconditional Love and know their sacred wholeness.
