He over pursued, over texted, didn't exercise emotional self control and acted needy, neurotic, clingy and desperate to the point she lost all respect and attraction for him. What a week, folks, what a week! Buckle up, because ThursdAI just dropped, and this one's a doozy. We're talking seismic shifts in the open source world, a potential game-changer from DeepSeek AI that's got everyone buzzing, and oh yeah, just a casual $500 BILLION infrastructure project announcement. Plus, OpenAI finally pulled the trigger on "Operator," their agentic browser thingy – though getting it to actually operate proved to be a bit of a live show adventure, as you'll hear. This week felt like one of those pivotal moments in AI, a real before-and-after kind of thing. DeepSeek's R1 hit the open source scene like a supernova, and suddenly, top-tier reasoning power is within reach for anyone with a Mac and a dream. And then there's OpenAI's Operator, promising to finally bridge the gap between chat and action. Did it live up to the hype? Well, let's just say things got interesting. As I'm writing this, White House just published that an Executive Order on AI was just signed and published as well, what a WEEK.Open Source AI Goes Nuclear: DeepSeek R1 is HERE!Hold onto your hats, open source AI just went supernova! This week, the Chinese Whale Bros – DeepSeek AI, that quant trading firm turned AI powerhouse – dropped a bomb on the community in the best way possible: R1, their reasoning model, is now open source under the MIT license! As I said on the show, "Open source AI has never been as hot as this week."This isn't just a model, folks. DeepSeek unleashed a whole arsenal: two full-fat R1 models (DeepSeek R1 and DeepSeek R1-Zero), and a whopping six distilled finetunes based on Qwen (1.5B, 7B, 14B, and 32B) and Llama (8B, 72B). One stat that blew my mind, and Nisten's for that matter, is that DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B, the tiny 1.5 billion parameter model, is outperforming GPT-4o and Claude-3.5-Sonnet on math benchmarks! "This 1.5 billion parameter model that now does this. It's absolutely insane," I exclaimed on the show. We're talking 28.9% on AIME and 83.9% on MATH. Let that sink in. A model you can probably run on your phone is schooling the big boys in math.License-wise, it's MIT, which as Nisten put it, "MIT is like a jailbreak to the whole legal system, pretty much. That's what most people don't realize. It's like, this is, it's not my problem. You're a problem now." Basically, do whatever you want with it. Distill it, fine-tune it, build Skynet – it's all fair game. And the vibes? "Vibes are insane," as I mentioned on the show. Early benchmarks are showing R1 models trading blows with o1-preview and o1-mini, and even nipping at the heels of the full-fat o1 in some areas. Check out these numbers:And the price? Forget about it. We're talking 50x cheaper than o1 currently. DeepSeek R1 API is priced at $0.14 / 1M input tokens and $2.19 / 1M output tokens, compared to OpenAI's o1 at $15.00 / 1M input and a whopping $60.00 / 1M output. Suddenly, high-quality reasoning is democratized.LDJ highlighted the "aha moment" in DeepSeek's paper, where they talk about how reinforcement learning enabled the model to re-evaluate its approach and "think more." It seems like simple RL scaling, combined with a focus on reasoning, is the secret sauce. No fancy Monte Carlo Tree Search needed, apparently! But the real magic of open source is what the community does with it. Pietro Schirano joined us to talk about his "Retrieval Augmented Thinking" (RAT) approach, where he extracts the thinking process from R1 and transplants it to other models. "And what I found out is actually by doing so, you may even like smaller, quote unquote, you know, less intelligent model actually become smarter," Pietro explained. Frankenstein models, anyone? (John Lindquist has a tutorial on how to do it here)And then there's the genius hack from Voooogel, who figured out how to emulate a "reasoning_effort" knob by simply replacing the "end" token with "Wait, but". "This tricks the model into keeps thinking," as I described it. Want your AI to really ponder the meaning of life (or just 1+1)? Now you can, thanks to open source tinkering.Georgi Gerganov, the legend behind llama.cpp, even jumped in with a two-line snippet to enable speculative decoding, boosting inference speeds on the 32B model on my Macbook from a sluggish 5 tokens per second to a much more respectable 10-11 tokens per second. Open source collaboration at its finest and it's only going to get better! Thinking like a NeuroticMany people really loved the way R1 thinks, and what I found astonishing is that I just sent "hey" and the thinking went into a whole 5 paragraph debate of how to answer, a user on X answered with "this is Woody Allen-level of Neurotic" which... nerd sniped me so hard! I used Hauio Audio (which is great!) and ByteDance latentSync and gave R1 a voice! It's really something when you hear it's inner monologue being spoken out like this! ByteDance Enters the Ring: UI-TARS Controls Your PCNot to be outdone in the open source frenzy, ByteDance, the TikTok behemoth, dropped UI-TARS, a set of models designed to control your PC. And they claim SOTA performance, beating even Anthropic's computer use models and, in some benchmarks, GPT-4o and Claude.UI-TARS comes in 2B, 7B, and 72B parameter flavors, and ByteDance even released desktop apps for Mac and PC to go along with them. "They released an app it's called the UI TARS desktop app. And then, this app basically allows you to Execute the mouse clicks and keyboard clicks," I explained during the show. While I personally couldn't get the desktop app to work flawlessly (quantization issues, apparently), the potential is undeniable. Imagine open source agents controlling your computer – the possibilities are both exciting and slightly terrifying. As Nisten wisely pointed out, "I would use another machine. These things are not safe to tell people. I might actually just delete your data if you, by accident." Words to live by, folks.LDJ chimed in, noting that UI-TARS seems to excel particularly in operating system-level control tasks, while OpenAI's leaked "Operator" benchmarks might show an edge in browser control. It's a battle for desktop dominance brewing in open source!Noting that the common benchmark between Operator and UI-TARS is OSWorld, UI-Tars launched with a SOTA Humanity's Last Exam: The Benchmark to BeatSpeaking of benchmarks, a new challenger has entered the arena: Humanity's Last Exam (HLE). A cool new unsaturated bench of 3,000 challenging questions across over a hundred subjects, crafted by nearly a thousand subject matter experts from around the globe. "There's no way I'm answering any of those myself. I need an AI to help me," I confessed on the show. And guess who's already topping the HLE leaderboard? You guessed it: DeepSeek R1, with a score of 9.4%! "Imagine how hard this benchmark is if the top reasoning models that we have right now... are getting less than 10 percent completeness on this," MMLU and Math are getting saturated? HLE is here to provide a serious challenge. Get ready to hear a lot more about HLE, folks.Big CO LLMs + APIs: Google's Gemini Gets a Million-Token BrainWhile open source was stealing the show, the big companies weren't completely silent. Google quietly dropped an update to Gemini Flash Thinking, their experimental reasoning model, and it's a big one. We're talking 1 million token context window and code execution capabilities now baked in!"This is Google's scariest model by far ever built ever," Nisten declared. "This thing, I don't like how good it is. This smells AGI-ish" High praise, and high concern, coming from Nisten! Benchmarks are showing significant performance jumps in math and science evals, and the speed is, as Nisten put it, "crazy usable." They have enabled the whopping 1M context window for the new Gemini Flash 2.0 Thinking Experimental (long ass name, maybe let's call it G1?) and I agree, it's really really good! And unlike some other reasoning models cough OpenAI cough, Gemini Flash Thinking shows you its thinking process! You can actually see the chain of thought unfold, which is incredibly valuable for understanding and debugging. Google's Gemini is quietly becoming a serious contender in the reasoning race (especially with Noam Shazeer being responsible for it!)OpenAI's "Operator" - Agents Are (Almost) HereThe moment we were all waiting for (or at least, I was): OpenAI finally unveiled Operator, their first foray into Level 3 Autonomy - agentic capabilities with ChatGPT. Sam Altman himself hyped it up as "AI agents are AI systems that can do work for you. You give them a task and they go off and do it." Sounds amazing, right?Operator is built on a new model called CUA (Computer Using Agent), trained on top of GPT-4, and it's designed to control a web browser in the cloud, just like a human would, using screen pixels, mouse, and keyboard. "This is just using screenshots, no API, nothing, just working," one of the OpenAI presenters emphasized. They demoed Operator booking restaurant reservations on OpenTable, ordering groceries on Instacart, and even trying to buy Warriors tickets on StubHub (though that demo got a little… glitchy). The idea is that you can delegate tasks to Operator, and it'll go off and handle them in the background, notifying you when it needs input or when the task is complete. As I'm writing these words, I have an Operator running trying to get me some fried rice, and another one trying to book me a vacation with kids over the summer, find some options and tell me what it found. Benchmarks-wise, OpenAI shared numbers for OSWorld (38.1%) and WebArena (58.1%), showing Operator outperforming previous SOTA but still lagging behind human performance. "Still a way to go," as they admitted. But the potential is massive. The catch? Operator is initially launching in the US for Pro users only, and even then, it wasn't exactly smooth sailing. I immediately paid the $200/mo to try it out (pro mode didn't convince me, unlimited SORA videos didn't either, operator definitely did, SOTA agents from OpenAI is definitely something I must try!) and my first test? Pajor Tamás zenész, prédikátor, médiaszemélyiség, akit mindig is a provokáció vonzott. Most bejelentette harmadik életszakaszát is: jön a Pajor Tamás 3.0, aminek pontos mibenlétét életútinterjúnkban fejti ki. It's collab time!!! This week Charlotte, Jena and the HILARIOUS ladies of Erotically Neurotic team up to tell Riley all about the Sentient Celebrations series. In praying for those I worked with, serving them above what my job required me to do and in developing real relationships with them outside of “Work”, I began to notice when their demeanor changed and they were having a bad day. I learned to ask, “How are you doing today?” I really wanted to know the answer. They would respond with “I'm Fine”, then I would respond, really? Freaked out, Insecure, Neurotic, and Emotional? Really, how are you doing? Then I would be quiet and let them share what was really going on because they knew I genuinely cared. When they were done sharing, I learned to say, “Thanks for sharing that with me, can I pray about that with you right now?” I never got turned down. Mind you this took a couple of years to develop but you can do it too. You can start by simply asking “How are you doing today?”

Have you ever wondered if your “quirks” might actually be manifested trauma? Or more like…that they probably ARE? Victoria Dozer was curious about her mom's pretty typical Jewish-mom-quirk of stashing huge amounts of things, like dishes and toilet paper--stuff that's useful in principle, but that you probably don't need 20 of--and uncovered that this behavior, inherited and then passed down to Victoria, is a legacy her mom inherited from her Holocaust-survivor father. She nicknamed the habit Holocaust hoarding, and went down a path of exploration; how does the trauma of our elders and ancestors affect our lives each day? And how do we honor them, their struggles and legacies, while working to see it for what it is, and turn towards healing without betraying their suffering? Jews are certainly not the only people who have been targets of genocide throughout their history, and it's so ingrained in Jewish identity that many don't even think about it consciously, but it felt very important to explore how such deeply ingrained existential fear can show up in Jewish life, including in reactions to world events. Victoria's approach in her article for Hey Alma, and our conversation, compassionately recognizes some very Jewish things that might be inherited trauma. She explores accepting the pain of our past without letting it define us, or be an unconscious force shaping our reactions, futures, and the lives of those around us. Victoria is also a planetary scientist, and you will be grateful for her thoughtful perspectives on the weight of generational trauma, hoarding vs environmentalism, and how to greet our own and others' trauma with loving acceptance, and heal without discarding a legacy we treasure. GLOSSARY:M.O.T.: Short for “Member of the Tribe,” a tongue in cheek term Jewish people sometimes use for one another, especially when meeting for the first time, i.e. “Oh hey! Another M.O.T.!”HSOs: Holocaust Survivor Offspring as referred to in medical literature researching generational trauma.Eugenics: The misappropriation and inaccurate application of scientific theories such as Darwin's theory of evolution to justify a belief in the genetic superiority of one race or people over another, ultimately leading to attempts to exterminate entire races and types of people, including the Jews by the Nazis, and mentally ill or otherwise neurodivergent populations in the United States.Tu BiShvat: See previous episode for a whole TuBishvat lesson! “Do not destroy”: “bal tashchit” in Hebrew, the principle stems from the idea that the earth belongs to God and careful stewardship of it is therefore our responsibility. Tikkun Olam: “world repair,” is a concept that all human beings are responsible for one another and the world, and for repairing harm and damage through their actions, big or small.Find Hey Alma on Instagram!Support the showLike the show? Chapter 1 What's The Neurotic Personality of Our Time Book by Karen Horney"The Neurotic Personality of Our Time" is a book written by Karen Horney, a prominent psychoanalyst and feminist theorist. Published in 1937, the book explores the concept of neurosis and its underlying causes in contemporary society. According to Horney, neurosis arises from various conflicts and disturbances in one's personality, such as an excessive need for approval, an overwhelming desire for power, or an intense fear of abandonment. Horney discusses the impact of societal factors, cultural influences, and childhood experiences on the development of neurotic behaviors and patterns. By examining different neurotic styles, such as the aggressive or compliant type, Horney aims to shed light on the complexities of human personality and how it interacts with societal pressures.Chapter 2 Is The Neurotic Personality of Our Time Book A Good BookOpinions about books can vary greatly, so it is subjective whether "The Neurotic Personality of Our Time" by Karen Horney is a good book. However, the book is widely regarded as a classic in the field of psychology and has been highly influential for understanding and treating neuroticism. If you are interested in psychoanalytic theory and the study of personality, it could be a valuable read.Chapter 3 The Neurotic Personality of Our Time Book by Karen Horney Summary"The Neurotic Personality of Our Time" is a book written by Karen Horney, a prominent psychoanalyst, in 1937. In this book, Horney examines neurosis, a condition characterized by chronic psychological distress, and its underlying causes.Horney argues that neurotic individuals are profoundly affected by their deep-seated anxieties and insecurities. She suggests that these anxieties stem from early experiences of rejection or neglect in childhood, which leads to feelings of helplessness and a desperate need for love and approval. According to Horney, neurotics develop maladaptive defense mechanisms, such as aggression or withdrawal, in order to cope with these feelings.Horney also discusses how societal pressures and cultural norms contribute to the development of neurotic personalities. She explores the impact of competitive, individualistic societies on individuals' self-esteem and the resulting fear of failure or rejection.Furthermore, Horney introduces the concept of the "idealized self-image," which neurotics construct as a means to compensate for their underlying feelings of inadequacy. They strive for perfection and constantly compare themselves to others, leading to a perpetual cycle of dissatisfaction and self-criticism.In the later chapters of the book, Horney discusses various neurotic personality types, including the obsessive-compulsive, hysterical, and narcissistic personalities. She provides detailed case studies and analytical insights to illustrate her theoretical framework.Overall, "The Neurotic Personality of Our Time" offers a comprehensive analysis of neurosis and its psychological origins. Horney challenges conventional psychoanalytic theories of her time and offers a more humanistic approach to understanding neurotic individuals. The book remains highly influential in the field of psychology and continues to contribute to the understanding and treatment of neurotic behaviors. Chapter 4 The Neurotic Personality of Our Time Book AuthorKaren Horney was a German psychoanalyst and author, known for her contributions to the field of psychoanalysis and her unique perspective on personality development. Pajor egyik napról a másikra a deviancia legszélsőségesebb formáinak képviselőjéből, alternatív rock'n'roll-ikonból hívő kereszténnyé lett. Hogyan támogathatja a munkánkat? Are the "physical" symptoms of depression specific or non-specific? How do you treat schizophrenia with TEAM? Why don't more shrinks help themselves? Healthy vs unhealthy negative feelings-- what's the difference? Questions answered in this podcast: 1. Laura asks: Why don't you include the physical symptoms of depression in your assessment tests? 2. Fred asks: How would you use TEAM-CBT to treat individuals with schizophrenia? 3. Author not known: Why don't the therapists you treat with TEAM treat themselves using self-help techniques? 4. Zach: How does David understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy emotions? Is there any overlap between EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and David's TEAM-CBT? The following are David's written responses to these questions. However, in the podcast, Rhonda and David discuss them, and their answers together may differ or enlarge on the material below. Also, in some cases, the written answers contain additional information not included in the live podcast. 1. Laura asks: Why don't you include the physical symptoms of depression in your assessment tests? Author: Laura asks a question about post #248: “David and Rhonda Answer Your Questions about Exercise, Empathy, Euphoria, Exposure, Psychodynamic Therapy, and more!” Comment: Fabulous, David. Bless you. Have you done a show on assessments? I'll be honest about my confusion. Some of the measures that you have developed almost seem too simple to be accurate. For example, the depression test isn't sensitive to any of the physical manifestations of the illness. Anyway, I was just curious about that. David's Reply Thanks, Laura! Good questions! First, the so-called physical symptoms of depression are non-specific and not uniquely associated with depression. Only the core emotional symptoms are good indicators of depression: feeling down, hopeless, worthless, unmotivated, and not enjoying life. If you want to measure physical symptoms, they won't give you much information about depression, but at least they need to be worded correctly, which they aren't in most assessment tols. For example, you can measure weight gain, OR weight loss, in single and separate items, but not in the same item. But if you go to a mall and ask how many people have had weight gain, you'll probably find that more than 50% report weight gain, but this is rarely due to depression, rather it is due to overeating! Similarly, a significant fraction will say yes to a question about weight loss, and in the vast majority of cases this will be due to dieting, not depression. Similarly with the other poorly thought out physical symptoms, like trouble sleeping. The reliability of my depression measures has typically been .95 or better, as compared with measures like the Beck or PHQ9 that have only .78 to .80 reliability coefficients (called “coefficient alpha.”) I have observed a phenomenal lack of critical thinking behind most current psychological tests for depression, anxiety, and other variables of interest to clinicians and researchers. You also asked about apps for anxiety, like OCD, as opposed to depression. The Feeling Good App causes rapid and significant reductions in, not one, but seven categories of negative feelings, including feelings of depression, anxiety, guilty/shame, inadequacy, loneliness, hopelessness and anger. Thanks so much! Finally, I have to confess my bias toward trying hard to make things simple, so we can all understand what we're talking about! When things are overly complicated or hard to “get,” I usually feel fairly suspicious about the person who is trying to “teach.” In college I always had the policy that if I can't understand what the teacher is trying to say, the teacher has a problem! My thinking today is pretty similar! I've always appreciated teachers who keep things simple for us mere mortals who appreciate having things explained clearly and in everyday words. Best, david 2. Fred asks: How would you use TEAM-CBT to treat individuals with schizophrenia? Hi David, Do you have any schizophrenia thought experiments? Most of my clients struggle with voices. I tell them there is always a good voice, which I believe is the Holy Spirit woven into every person at birth. I also tell them to welcome the voices and listen for what they need, because the voices need to be welcomed back into the body - the "family" - of the person, according to Internal Family Systems. I welcome your thoughts. I am not a therapist so anything I say or do needs to fit my role as a recovery coach. Fred South Bend, Indiana David's Reply. Thanks, Fred, great question. I have treated many individuals with schizophrenia, but they have rarely or never asked for help with the voices they hear. I like to set the agenda for each patient, finding out what they specifically want help with. And individuals with schizophrenia respond very well to TEM-CBT, both the individual treatment model for depression and anxiety, as well as the interpersonal model for relationship problems. An experience early in my career highlighted the folly of trying to challenge the delusions of individuals with schizophrenia. A young man, a new patient, seemed uncomfortable and when I inquired, he explained that the receptionist, Lucretia, was listening in because she could “hear” our thoughts and our conversation. I explained that Lucretia did not have much money, and that if he wanted we could do an experiment to test his belief. I put a $20 bill on the desk and said that if Lucretia knocked and came into the office, she could have the money. So I did that and Lucretia did not knock on the door or appear in the office. I asked the young man what he concluded from our “experiment.” He said that she “knew” it was an experiment since she could “hear” our thoughts, and didn't come in because she didn't want us to know she was “listening in” on our dialogue! That's an excellent example of what happens when the shrink tries to set the agenda, as opposed to helping patients with what THEY want help with! In my experience, you can help individuals with schizophrenia with self-esteem, anxiety, and relationship problems with psychotherapy, and they do feel and function somewhat better, but they still, sadly, have schizophrenia. This is my thinking only, and others may differ. I know that Aaron Beck and many of his followers have done research studies claiming they can help schizophrenia with traditional CBT. I am skeptical, but have not read those studies or evaluated the data with a critical eye! So who knows? Maybe they have some decent results. Best, david 3. Author not known asks: Why don't the therapists you treat with TEAM treat themselves using self-help techniques? Why can't the TEAM-CBT therapists who have done personal work with you on the podcasts do that work themselves in self-help mode?" They know all the techniques and have all the tools. With no qualifications, I have my own theory on that, which is actually based on TEAM. I don't know how to give myself the level of E=empathy required to move on to the next stage. So I guess my question could be reworded as "Is it possible to give yourself sufficient empathy in self-help mode?" or "Are there techniques or tools you can use to give yourself empathy in self-help mode?" David's Response Thanks, cool question! Blind spot, especially in relationship problems To get experience in the “patient” role Sometimes, we all need a little help from a friend, and that can sometimes be vastly faster than trying to do everything on your own. But in terms of empathy, I believe you CAN treat yourself with empathy, warmth, and compassion, and that is actually one of the keys to recovery, whether or not you're in treatment with a shrink! 4. How does David understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy emotions? Is there any overlap between EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and David's TEAM-CBT? Hi Dr. David and Dr. Rhonda, I have a question if you have a chance, and maybe this is better for an Ask David. David talks about healthy emotions sometimes, and this feels like a faint through-line to EFT model. Does David have a framework for understanding healthy emotions or emotional needs? When a client is grieving, David encourages the tears to flow and notes it's an expression of how much the client valued something. David also demonstrates what EFT would call protective anger, when using the counterattack method, “I'm tired of listening to your BS.” And lastly David demonstrates what EFT labels self-compassion while using the acceptance paradox and 5 secrets responses to critical thoughts. Thanks, Zach David's Response Thanks for the excellent question. I have to confess that I don't know much about EFT, but I think there's a lot of overlap in different “therapies” since many people “borrow” ideas from other experts, and get so excited about them that they call them their own, and simply give them a new name, claiming to have something entirely new. And it sounds like there are some definitely similarities between my TEAM-CBT and what is called “EFT.” If this is true, I'm certain I didn't do the “borrowing” since I don't attend to the work of others in the field, for better or worse. At any rate, I have always taught my students that each negative feeling has a healthy and an unhealthy version, as you can see in the following table. The main difference is that the healthy version results from valid negative thoughts, and the unhealthy version results from distorted negative thoughts. However, in the past 25 years or so, I've taken a new look at so-called “unhealthy negative feelings” in my TEAM-CBT. There, we reframe the negative feelings, showing what's beautiful and awesome about each one. IN other words, we genuinely try to sell the patient on NOT changing. Paradoxically, this approach, which I call Positive Reframing, seems to melt the patient's resistance to change, and that nearly always opens the door to the possibility of rapid change. Healthy vs Unhealthy Negative Feelings Healthy Version Unhealthy Version Sadness, grief when you've lost someone or something you loved Depression, worthlessness, hopelessness Healthy fear when you're in danger Anxiety, nervousness, worry, and panic, and phobias Healthy remorse when you've hurt someone you love Neurotic guilt, blaming yourself for something you're not entirely, or at all, responsible for Healthy inadequacy and awareness of your very real shortcomings and limitations Worthlessness, inferiority Missing someone you love Desperate loneliness, abandonment, feeling unlovable Discouragement when you fail or when things don't work you Hopelessness Sharing your anger in the spirit of love and respect Unhealthy anger, aggression, acting out your anger with the goal of hurting or upsetting the other person, or getting back at them Thanks so much for listening today! Warmly, Rhonda and David
