Rapper Soup the Chemist aka SFC aka Chris Cooper joins Todd and Spun for this first episode of Orphans of God to talk hip-hop, Brainstorm Artists International, Gene Eugene, Adam Again, faith and so much more!
On this "impossibly short version of the ongoing conversation you'll find at TrueTunes.com" we revisit our conversation with songwriter, artist, and pioneer, Terry Scott Taylor. Between his solo work, his groundbreaking work with the band Daniel Amos, his collaboration with The 77s' Michael Roe, The Choir's Derri Daugherty, and Adam Again's Gene Eugene as The Lost Dogs, and even his more experimental or humorous work with The Swirling Eddies or as the composer of soundtracks for animated shows and video games, Taylor has been setting invitingly high standards since the 1970s. If there is ever anything resembling a True Tunes Mt. Rushmore - be certain that Taylor's glorious mug will be etched thereupon. About The True Tunes Microdose Episodes: As we look back on our first 100 episodes we have gathered some of these "greatest hits" - never more than 5 minutes long - to remind long-time listeners of where we've been and give new folks a chance to check us out. Todd Zeller is a veteran of the Christian alternative rock scene in Souther Cali. Over the years, he's worked with Adam Again, the Choir, Michael Knott, and others. True Tunes host John J. Thompson recently traveled to Cleveland, TN, to speak at a festival in honor of Rev. Howard Finster – the enigmatic painter, pastor, and musician who first came to international prominence when his art was used on album covers by Talking Heads, R.E.M., and Adam Again, and is considered by some to be the father of contemporary folk art. Painter and woodcut printmaker Kreg Yingst, whose art has graced recent album projects by Vigilantes of Love and others, presented at the festival as well and joined John for a conversation. Plus, we crank up the Jukebox to check out one of the most prolific and accomplished outsider musicians of the last three decades; John Darnielle and his band, The Mountain Goats. Garrett has been walking down memory lane ever since he was posed the question "What song would you like to talk about on the podcast?" He has always has a love for Adam Again's music. The fact that Gene, the songwriter and composer has passed, makes Garrett so sad to know he will never hear new music from Gene! Have you ever had a favorite singer pass or the band break up? He brought up the point that with this song, "Who Can Hold Us," he especially notices the instrumental aspect of this song. He really appreciates how the song expresses a thought and then the music offers you a moment to be thoughtful. Few words but a huge impact is how this song strikes the listener. Garrett is so impacted by this song that lots of times he finds himself tearful and reminiscent. Full Show Notes
Jon discusses his musical quest from childhood until today and everything in between.
Many people think that the beginnings of Christian alternative rock began in the early 1980s with bands like Undercover, Daniel Amos, Adam Again, and others. However, I would argue the foundations were established even before that with bands like After the Fire and Quickflight. Just like After the Fire, the genesis of Quickflight can be traced back to the early 1970s. If you were introduced to Christian rock in the mid-1980s like I was, you probably thought it all began with One Bad Pig, Stryper, The Altar Boys, and a few other bands who went "Against the Grain" (pun intended). It wasn't until about a month ago that I was chasing some rabbits down various rabbit holes and discovered there was an entire other generation even before those groups. One of those groundbreaking outfits was a keyboard-driven rock ensemble named Quickflight. Quickflight started out playing straight rock. both original and cover tunes, in bars throughout their local surrounding Canadian hometowns. Not content with being weekend warrior musicians, Quickflight decided to take off in a different direction under the leadership of founding member / songwriter / producer Ric deGroot. After releasing their first album, "Breakaway," through Tunesmith Records in 1980, Degroot found himself ready to transition the band to a more keyboard heavy techno sound. One way he did that was by adding a second keyboard player. Enter Dale Dirksen. I had the opportunity to sit down with Dirksen and talk with him about his time with Quickflight. We discussed what it was like to be in one of the first Christian-based techno / new wave acts and how they were looked upon. It was amazing to hear how trailblazing and controversial they were at the time. We talked about the many career paths Dirksen has embarked upon in his life after his time with Quickflight. Although he left the industry behind, his love for music never fizzled out. Dale tells us what he's up to in that regard as well. Check out my interview with Dale Dirksen from Quickflight. I also found out he was a touring musician for the Steve Taylor Band for a while as well. You'll hear all about it in the video. You can check out Dale Dirksen's new music right at https://soundcloud.com/user-996147138. Keep up with daily doses of entertainment news at https://www.moviesmusicmore.com.
Join us for this wide-ranging conversation with singer, songwriter, producer and artist Daniel Smith of Danielson / Danielson Famile / Brother Danielson “fame,” and Jukebox reflections on the 1986 debut album by Adam Again and the surprise new murder ballad by Bob Dylan. Welcome everyone to episode 99 of the Everyone’s Agnostic podcast, I’m Cass Midgley. Today, I bring you a special episode where I’m going to briefly focus on music as a voice that both called me to stay Christian and called me out, and my guest today symbolizes that tension. Some of my favorite Christian music artists were Edin-Adahl, Sweet Comfort Band, Allies, The Front, David & the Giants, Russ Taff, Charlie Peacock, the 77s, Jimmy Abegg, Mark Heard, Dave Perkins, Jon Gibson, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Switchfoot, and Adam Again. I collected over 800 Christian music cassettes and CDs between the early 80s and late 90s. I was the music buyer at a Christian bookstore and I was a sales rep for StarSong. Early on I decided to ban secular music from my life. Part of what keeps one convinced that they’re in the right is by surrounding one’s self with music that only confirms one’s beliefs. How could all these songs be written about something that’s not true? And yet, in the outside world, there were even more songs and musicians who felt no need to write religious songs. One of the hats my guest today wears is that of a music critic. He wrote close to 900 articles in Christian music publications between 1982 and 1999. That’s over one articles a week for 17 years and those same years coincide with my infatuation with Christianity. And if you trace those articles chronologically, he little by little, started reviewing secular music more and more, which gave me permission to lift my ban on it and listen outside the Christian sub-culture. The other thing I think this episode points out is that there are some smart Christians out there who, maybe in the vein of John Shelby Spong, or Marcus Borg, or Paul Tillich, have figured out a way to shape their Christian narrative into a redemptive work and practice that makes the world a better place. They have salvaged, at least for themselves and a few others, that which claimed to be salvation. They’ve made craft beer out of barley and hops and it has enhanced the lived experience of those in their wake. Reverend Brian Quincy Newcomb has served as pastor in the United Church of Christ for over 30 years. We talk about the evolution of his faith from childhood to present day. I picture him as a master craftsman that started whittling away at a solid tree trunk 40+ years ago and today it is a sculpture of a giant black bear with her cub in her mouth, a fish in one hand, and crossing a roaring river. We talk about the formation of his faith, through deconstruction and reconstruction, and his struggle with kidney cancer. And at the end, some friends offer a few words about Brian’s impact on their lives. We taped this talk May 7th, 2016. Greetings! Welcome back Never Wases!! "Man makes the plans - and God laughs," right? Now where have we heard that before? Alas, through many a twist and turn, Never Was Podcast returns (for real... probably) and the legendary Riki Michele joins us. The following line was written and rewritten roughly 100 times, and since it never seems quite up to snuff, I'll just lay it out there: once known to some as "the girl singer in Adam Again," Riki Michele is a solo artist with her own story to tell - and a brand new album, Push, to tell it. Gather round y'all - this one goes way, way back, then lands right in the here & now. Enjoy!
Greetings! Hey look... it's a new Never Was! 2015 marked the 25 year anniversary of an album largely unknown by the masses, and even by those students of passionate, artistic expression within Christendom: Sin Disease, the debut full length album from punk/alt rock pioneers, Scaterd Few (sic - but you should already know that) I spoke with Allan Aguire about the time period, the process and the experiences that went into this album so many years ago and the impact it had on me and so many others. Because this album was so important to me, I had to call in some backup: We'll hear from Sam West, former drummer of Scaterd Few and eventual drummer of Stavesacre and... Adam Again legend, will-o-wisp mystery solo-artisté and all around lovely person Riki Michele as well! LIGHTS OUUUUUUUT Enjoy!

Girls rule on this episode of Frontline Rewind featuring Riki Michele of Adam Again and Adel Meisenheimer, Executive Producer of Frontline Rewind. – It’s “Girls Gone Wild†in Frontline Rewind 47 as executive producer, Adel Meisenheimer, interviews Riki Michele, of Adam Again fame. It was fitting to get the girls together on the cusp of Michele’s female-infused new solo album, Push. She and producer, Margaret Becker, primarily wrote the new work, which also features several girlfriends. Getting together in Michele’s San Diego home provided an opportunity to celebrate the new release and reminisce about her very first solo album, Big Big Town. Songs on this first project were written by Gene Eugene (Adam Again) and Steve Hindalong (The Choir) and produced by Gene Eugene. Of course it has funk-rock influences and Adam Again-infused production. Songs featured are from Big Big Town, released digitally for the first time since its 1989 release on Broken Records, and a couple favorites from Push.
We are excited to have Riki Michele join us on the show Tuesday April 14th. Many of you might recognize her name as the longtime member of the group Adam Again. Her new project PUSH, which was produced by Margaret Becker released just last week. Be sure to get a copy of this. It is available on iTunes here. Also, check out this great write up on the new record here.
