On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's David Grubbs! I often ask myself, is there anything David can't do? I'm pretty sure the answer is no. We talked a fair bit about his new record with Loren Connors, “Evening Air,” before going down all sorts of rabbit holes about Mayo Thompson and The Red Krayola, the expansive magic of The Modern Lovers, Van Dyke Parks walking the line of something bananas and genius, Myriam Gendron breaking us to bits, Isaac Hayes, Bob Dylan, and so much more!Listen to all of David's picks HERELoren Connors & David Grubbs “Evening Air”David Grubbs on InstagramSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. As one half of influential band Gastr del Sol along with David Grubbs, Jim O'Rourke's work has reached many through that project alone. However, his additional work as an esteemed solo artist and producer as well as a guitarist in Sonic Youth have extended his reach even further, solidifying him as one of the most prominent artists to emerge from the American underground. On this episode, he talks about how songs by David Ackles, Genesis and Charles Ives informed his development as a musician. David Grubbs, who along with Jim O'Rourke comprised Gastr del Sol, ushered in a new, cerebral strain of post-rock upon their appearance in the 90's. Owing more to modern classical composers than what was being played on college radio, the duo toured extensively and put out eight releases, most of which were on esteemed Chicago label Drag City. Their newest release is a box set of their work named We Have Dozens of Titles, and was also released by Drag City in May of 2024. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a fantastic chat featuring three boundary-pushing musicians that turns into a lovefest: It's Daniel Lopatin, better known as Oneohtrix Point Never, along with David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke, who were known together as Gastr del Sol. Lopatin has created an incredible body of experimental records over the past 20 or so years. His woozy, sample-heavy early material had him pegged as the inventor of vaporwave, but he never stays in the same musical place very long. He broke through to a different audience with soundtracks for the Safdie brothers' movies Good Time and Uncut Gems, and Lopatin is also heavily responsible for the sound of The Weeknd's records, where he's credited as an executive producer. The tenth Oneohtrix Point Never album, called Again, came out late last year, and once again it found Lopatin utilizing a new set of inspirations, one of which was the post-rock movement of the 1990s, which figures heavily into today's conversation. More on that in a minute, but first check out “Again,” the title track from the latest Oneohtrix Point Never album. Featured on that track was none other than Jim O'Rourke, an experimental musician and producer perhaps best known to the pop-music world for working on Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born. But O'Rourke's cv is far too vast to dive into here, and the focus of this conversation is his 1990s collaboration with fellow musician David Grubbs in a band called Gastr del Sol. That duo burned bright for a few years, amassing a catalog that's difficult to pin down, ranging as it does from arch orchestral pop to more rangy, experimental songs. They disbanded in 1998, leaving the world on a high note with their poppiest yet perhaps weirdest set of songs, Camofleur. Gastr del Sol's legend has only grown in the meantime, and they finally got around to releasing some new-old material just this year, in the form of a combination live album/rarities set called We Have Dozens of Titles. True to their ethos, it's neither a standard odds and ends package or a greatest hits, but rather combines an excellent live recording—of what turned out to be their final concert—and songs that had been previously orphaned on various compilations. Check out “The Seasons Reverse” here, which is referenced in this chat. Speaking of this chat… Talkhouse conversations are usually more two-way streets than this one, but it turns out that Daniel Lopatin is a huge Gastr del Sol geek, so he ends up asking most of the questions. He's got deep-seated opinions and interesting theories on their music: They chat about getting into music, about specific passages in Gastr songs, about the idea of indie-rock as a genre, and about the time Gastr del Sol was asked to license a song for a tentacle porn movie. Oh, and Daniel calls Gastr del Sol's music trashy. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Daniel Lopatin, Jim O'Rourke, and David Grubbs for chatting. Today's guest deejay is Tim McManus, the had honcho of Island House Recordings, a little label based on a little island in the East river, Roosevelt Island, NYC. How did I cross paths with Tim, you ask? Oh, the usual circuitous route. A few years back, Stefan Beck, who moonlights as Golden Brown, took over the turntables on Soundwave (you can check out Stefan's mix here). I asked him who might be keen to share a mix on an upcoming show, and without missing a beat, he recommended Tim. Stefan said he curious to hear what Tim put together. After doing a deep dive into Tim's label, I was curious, too. Tim did not disappoint. He kicked off his set with a track from The The — talk about a curveball. That unexpected twist set the tone for the entire mix. From there, Tim kept the surprises coming, weaving through tracks from Gastr De Sol (I'm a longtime David Grubbs fan) to Nimbudala. You're in for a treat! Naturally, I'm already primed to ask Tim who he thinks should helm the decks on Soundwave next. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Broken Chip. See you then. Esta semana, en una nueva edición de Rebelión Sónica, destacamos la nueva antología de la influyente banda estadounidense Gastr del Sol, “We Have Dozens of Titles”.

This week's guest Joe Tunis (Carbon Records, Pengo) once again guides us into the world of post-rock, with Chicago-by-way-of-Kentucky band Gastr del Sol and their 1994 Drag City release 'Crookt, Crackt, or Fly'. Like many of their adjacent bands - Slint, Tortoise, Bastro...etc - the music on this mysterious record is often hard to define. It's a strange, evocative amalgamation of unconventional guitar virtuosity, subtle tape-work and occasional forays into full-on math rock that's definitely not for the timid. Songs featured in this episode: Wedding in the Park - Gastr del Sol; Queasy Stream - Pengo; Sun God - Squirrel Bait; Breadcrumb Trail - Slint; Shoot Me A Deer - Bastro; A Watery Kentucky - Gastr del Sol; Rain On Tin - Sonic Youth; History and Repetition - Bill Orcutt; Four Violins (excerpt) - Tony Conrad; Sunflower River Blues - John Fahey; Wedding in the Park, Work From Smoke - Gastr del Sol; Glass Museum - Tortoise; Parenthetically - Gastr del Sol; Wird - Codeine; Every Five Miles - Gastr del Sol; Boilermaker - The Jesus Lizard; Thos. Dudley Ah! Old Must Dye, Is That A Rifle When It Rains? - Gastr del Sol; Horizontal Hold - This Heat; Jacking The Ball - The Sea and Cake; The C in Cake, The Wrong Soundings - Gastr del Sol; What's He Building? - Tom Waits; The Wrong Soundings, Dry Bones in the Valley (I Saw The Light Come Shining 'Round and 'Round) - Gastr del Sol

What happens when Alma Rosa's husband opens a hefty bag he found abandoned on a cemetery gravestone? Well, when your do-gooder hubby picks up litter to help the community, things can get a little hairy. This story involves a town on edge due to a recent murder, Alma Rosa's folkloric Mexican upbringing, and the absolute possibility of witchcraft. And for anyone curious about the murder of David Grubbs in Ashland, Oregon, here's a link to September 2021 article by Medium on the still unsolved case.Alma Rosa's Boo Club: Obit by Victoria ChangDescription from Copper Canyon Press: “After her mother died, poet Victoria Chang refused to write elegies. Rather, she distilled her grief during a feverish two weeks by writing scores of poetic obituaries for all she lost in the world. In Obit, longlisted for the 2020 National Book Award in Poetry, Chang writes of “the way memory gets up after someone has died and starts walking.” These poems reinvent the form of newspaper obituary to both name what has died (“civility,” “language,” “the future,” “Mother's blue dress”) and the cultural impact of death on the living. Whereas elegy attempts to immortalize the dead, an obituary expresses loss, and the love for the dead becomes a conduit for self-expression. In this unflinching and lyrical book, Chang meets her grief and creates a powerful testament for the living.”Alma Rosa's Shares Not Scares: Volunteer with St. Vincent De Paul! From the SSVPISA.org site: The mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is “a network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.”Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (known as “Vincentians”) are men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to neighbors in need. Our members represent all ages, every race, and all incomes, and all are gifted with awareness that the blessings of time, talent, and treasure are to be shared with neighbors in need. And some links to withcraft-y things mentioned during the story:Nov 27, 2019 - Santería or voodoo, they're used to headless chickens at Tampa cemeteryMay 10, 2014 - Are voodoo rituals behind the growing number of decapitated roosters being dumped in Las Vegas streets?Feb 28, 2008 - Blog on TreasureNet: Found My First Cache, 2 Coconuts & 1 Dead Rooster !!

Why is getting your CDL like trying to swat flies with 2x4s? To discuss just that, hosts Ryan Priest and Sal Sama have brought in Premier Ag employees Brian Scheid and David Grubbs. Brian is the Director of Human Resources, Health, Safety, and Environmental, and has been in the co-op system for 31 years. David, Operations Manager of Transportation, has been in the increasingly complex transportation industry for over eight years. You'll learn about the requirements to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL), driving regulations, and a bit more about driving school. They'll also discuss the hoops someone must jump through to maintain a license once they get it and how losing our older drivers negatively impacts the industry. If you've not heard enough about the supply chain in recent years, Ryan, Sal, Brian, and David also get into how the lack of drivers affects that, too.
In 2004, David was wrapping up his freshman year at Baylor University and started his first business. His parents told him they would give him money towards his MBA or his first business, and he immediately took the seed funding and ran with it. By college graduation however, the company was not yet large enough to support a full-time salary, so David moved in with his sister who was working on her Masters degree. He slept on a Coleman air mattress for 9 months on the living room floor and went on the road pitching investors to raise a round of funding. The first 40 investors turned him down and he was down to just $300 in savings with the reality approaching he was going to have to go out and get a job. He firmly believed that God had a plan and he had to just keep going. After nearly 100 pitches, five investors came on board and provided the $250,000 in funding required to grow the business. The same day the round of funding was closed, his air mattress popped, and he was able to get his own apartment and buy a real bed. Fast forward to today and David has started over twenty businesses (several of those with Boss Club co-founder Charlie Gasmire). In 2012 David and Charlie co-founded Vendevor, an ecommerce software business which successfully sold to Payscape in July of 2015. David's recent successes include First Centurion Group which sold a variety of consumer goods from its own line of skin care products and work-out supplements and generated nearly $40 million in online sales and grew to over 50 employees and was one of the fastest growing start-ups in 2013. November 2019 David sold Pegasus Fulfillment, to Selery Fulfillment, a Mark Cuban backed company. Pegasus Fulfillment was a company he built with his father Mike Grubbs, which handled inventory warehousing and online order fulfillment for over a dozen different ecommerce businesses including his own. With many startups under his belt David has learned there is a recipe to starting businesses which enables businesses to be launched faster and with less risk. Those hard-learned lessons from nearly two decades were disseminated into a unique Entrepreneurship course he taught at Baylor University with Dr. Kendall Artz and Dr. Les Palich where 12 hand selected students were given funding to start real businesses over the course of a semester. The program was a success and the core of Boss Club's curriculum is based on all the principles taught in that college level course. In his free time David loves flying (as a private pilot), riding horses, scuba diving, reading, learning Spanish, and participating in his church. David lives in a small rural town in Costa Rica and is married to his wife of four years, Daniella, who runs her own not-for-profit equine therapy center to help people with disabilities. Their first son, Sam, was born in 2020. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grayson-mask/support
