Adisa Banjoko's contributions to hip-hop go back to its beginnings in the Bay Area. He started off as a rapper with the group Freedom Troop 187, who made it into the first unsigned hype column in The Source before disbanding. As a senior at Oceana High in Pacifica, he did Eazy-E's first interview ever for his high school newspaper. From there, he ended up writing for The Source and other acclaimed publications, and encountering 2pac, Digital Underground, Gang Starr, EPMD, Public Enemy, 2 Live Crew, and many others. Adisa's been able to witness so many Bay Area hip-hop stories, including the rise of DJ Vlad and Zion-I. Notoriously, a disagreement with KRS-One resulted in an explosive confrontation between him and Adisa at Stanford University, which he breaks down in detail in this episode. As the founder of Hip-Hop Chess Federation, he's worked on chess events with RZA and GZA and is now partnering with them on a new organization called 64 Blocks. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

As a pioneer Hip-Hop journalist, he was one of the first people to interview artists like Eazy E, Tupac Shakur, and Master P. He went on to write three books on the cultural value of rap and create a youth organisation called the Hip-Hop Chess Federation. Adisa "The Bishop" Banjoko is an author, podcast host, chess player, martial artist and founder of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation - amongst other amazing things. On this episode we discuss the melding of hip-hop, chess, and jiu jitsu to support youth development. Adisa's incredibly unique and powerful journey began after an unexpected interaction with his school counselor that led to a newfound friendship with the late great rapper Easy-E. We hear about his story in detail on this ep, followed by a breakdown of some dope lyrics - this time some hip-hop and chess bars from Apathy. Adisa is also the host of the Bishop Chronicles Podcast, which you can catch here: http://www.bishopchronicles.com/ Also check his socials: IG: instagram.com/bishopchronicles Twitter: https://twitter.com/adisathebishop
If Jazz is America's first great cultural export to the world, hip-hop is its second, and perhaps most important. From its earliest days, emerging from DJ and MC battles in the south-south Bronx, the rise and growth of hip hop music and culture has been exponential, and today there is no corner of the globe where hip hop has not taken root, often in surprising ways. Originally born from the grinding experience of 1970s urban American life, today's hip hop is a true creolization of cultures, mutating and transforming itself as it is constantly reinvented by its new fans and practitioners. There are few who are as important in the history of hip-hop as is Robert Diggs, known to the world as RZA from Wu-Tang Clan. The main producer for most of the Wu-Tang's albums, RZA is also an MC, a student of world religions and meditation, a practitioner of the martial arts, and a chess player. Chess has long been intertwined with hip-hop culture and the Black American experience, from the barbershop like the one run by my friend Jerome Helm here in Omaha – check him out in the January issue of Chess Life Faces column – to the halls of academia, as shown by my old colleague Dr. Tommy J. Curry in his 2008 article “Hip Hop Tactics.” That's in the Philosophy Looks at Chess volume edited by Ben Hale, where my “Garry Kasparov is a Cyborg” article can also be found. What becomes apparent, when reading RZA's books like the Tao of Wu and when reading this month's Chess Life cover story, written by our guest Adisa Banjoko, is that chess and hip-hop are tied together, and that chess can be much more than the staid enterprise we sometimes limit ourselves to in our imagination. We saw part of that in The Queen's Gambit, a topic that Adisa talked about at length in a recent podcast episode (#141 of The Bishop's Chronicles). We see a lot more of it in the interview, which ties chess to spirituality, the martial arts, and diet – veganism and tea. It's a very different vision of our game than the hegemonic image would indicate, and I think a vision that we would all do well to consider these days. Adisa “The Bishop” Banjoko is an author, an educator, and the founder of the Hip Hop Chess Federation. You can find him on Twitter and Instagram.

Kenny and Felicia chat with Ralph Gracie Student, fellow podcaster and founder of Hip Hop Chess, Adisa Banjoko. Available on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Spotify & Stitcher.
I talk to Adisa Banjoko aka Adisa the Bishop. He is the creator of the Hip Hop Chess Federation, Author of a book titled Bobby, Bruce and the Bronx and host of the Podcast called The Bishop Chronicles. The Hip Hop Chess federation combines the arts of Hip Hop, Chess and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and teaches positive life strategies to at-risk and incarcerated youth. We discuss how he formed the HHCF from an initial encounter in a juvenile detention facility where he found chess helpful to breakdown racial and social barriers, its development where traditionalists in each art were initially sceptical of the members of the other arts. We go over practical examples of how chess, jiu-jitsu and hip hop can be useful metaphors for dealing with life's struggles. Finally, how Adisa recently taught how to overcome creative blocks at a retreat with a Shaolin Monk hosted by the RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan at his house.
Like many, I am frustrated and angry. As I contemplate my rage and anger, I seek some sort of guidance to try and make sense of all this. I need to understand, to educate myself, to have a conversation with someone who will shed light on what to do with these extraordinary feelings. That is why I asked my brother Adisa Banjoko to be a guest on this episode. Adisa is an activist, educator, writer, speaker, podcaster and entrepreneur. He has spent much of his life studying black culture and educating others on racial injustice and the complexities of navigating this world as an African-American. He dropped a ton of knowledge and truth on this episode including: Differences in how police are viewed between black and white communities Systematic Racism in law enforcement Modern definition of White Supremacy How to use White Privilege to upset the system mindfully and effectively Breaking the cycle of ignorance Lessons parents must teach their black children This is a must listen episode for anyone seeking to understand our African-American brothers and sisters experience living in our country. Listen here or download off iTunes. Thank you to Adisa for taking the time to share his truth with us. You can find his podcast the Bishop Chronicles by clicking here.
