Hailing from Oakland, Goapele's signature voice and powerful songwriting has made her a staple Neo-soul, R&B, and underground hip-hop. Growing up with a South African father and German-Jewish mother, she became educated on human rights issues at an early age and got her start in music as a member of a youth activism group. This led Goapele to pursue her career in the Bay's local performance scene where she collaborated with Zion I, Hieroglyphics, and Martin Luther. She self-released her debut album "Closer" and the single of the same name became a timeless hit. She was the first Black woman to have a music video on YouTube and since then she has continued to tour, release new music, and use her voice to support social change.--For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail info@historyofthebay.com--History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Intro01:54 The power of music11:38 Songwriting20:25 South African heritage28:16 Youth activism32:45 First recordings36:49 Zion I 41:08 Self-releasing first album46:41 “Closer” music video50:49 New projects

Dropping his first single in 1988, Don Cisco might be the Bay Area's first Latino rapper on record. Growing up in the diverse Excelsior District, he gravitated towards hip-hop early during the emergence of West Coast rap, signing major label deals and a management contract with Ruthless Records' Jerry Heller. When that didn't work out, he started dropping independent projects in the Bay Area and started working with the likes Mac Dre, Baby Bash, Jay Tee, Kid Frost, Roger Troutman, and many more. His song "Mamacita" appeared on the Next Friday soundtrack and his single "Oh Boy" with Kurupt and Roscoe was a regional hit. Danny Glover is a legend of stage, screen, and the frontlines of social change. Tracing his family's roots back to his great-grandmother's experience as an emancipated slave, his grandparents' work as sharecroppers, and his parents as organizers within the post office, activism runs in Danny's blood. The 1968 student-led strike for Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University led him to acting when the poet Amiri Baraka recruited him for revolutionary theatre. From working on the stage, he made the transition into films and became a certified star with the Lethal Weapon franchise. He has never stopped using his platform to raise awareness for human rights and he continues to live in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood where he grew up.--For promo opportunities on the podcast, contact info@historyofthebay.com --History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Growing up in SF07:57 Great-grandparents13:48 SF State student strike20:37 From theatre to films28:58 Danny's journey33:03 Sidney Portier & Harry Belafonte36:57 Last Black Man In San Francisco

Coming out of Merced in the Central Valley, GB aka Getto Boy is putting on for his hometown in a major way. The child of Mexican immigrants, he fell into gang culture but turned his life around during a prison stint when he became a father behind bars. Turning to music to express himself, GB received instant recognition after dropping his first music video. This led to attention from rap fans and labels in Northern California, and he's been dropping music ever since. He also developed his own clothing brand and gained recognition from the city of Merced and California State Assembly for his community philanthropy. But this made him a target for law enforcement, and he was caught up in a massive gang sweep that tried to overshadow his community spirit by defaming his reputation. Order James Beasley's book "DEEP ROOTED" here: https://jamesbeasleyent.com James Beasley, Jr. describes himself as a third generation criminal, whose notorious family roots in Bayview-Hunters Point go back to the early days of Black migration to San Francisco. His father, great uncles and cousins built their reputation through labor racketeering, heroin dealing, and pimping, but James took advantage of the cocaine boom in the 70s and 80s. He soon became the drug kingpin of San Francisco, associating with Darryl "Lil D" Reed in Oakland and players like Big Dave and Harry-O in Los Angeles. After making millions of dollars, his run came to an end when he became the youngest person charged with tax evasion in United States history and ended up doing 27 years in federal prison. The Trunk Boiz is a collective of rappers, producers, singers, and dancers from Oakland who are best known for their regional hit "Cupcake No Fillin." Co-founded by cousins F.A. Tha Jefe and B*Janky, the group got their start recording songs on a home studio, burning CDs, and distributing tens of thousands of mixtapes throughout the Bay Area. They captured the electrifying energy of the Bay during the hyphy movement with songs like "Scraper Bike" that highlighted Oakland's unique culture. Taking advantage of YouTube in its early stages, their music videos were some of the first to go viral. Almost 20 years later, with Kendrick Lamar paying direct homage to them in his "squabble up" video, Trunk Boiz are planning on keeping their legacy going and continuing to make noise in the Bay Area. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 04:07 First studios 07:05 Oakland influences 11:07 Forming the group, first mixtapes 20:09 Other members 22:58 The Hyphy Movement 27:49 Sideshows 31:53 Turning down record deals 36:40 Scraper Bikes 49:01 Kendrick Lamar 53:03 Cupcake No Fillin 1:02:31 E-40 & Too Short “B*tch” Remix 1:13:17 Industry setbacks 1:22:43 Thoughts on current Bay music --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

After being turned down for a public defender job, she decided to start her own law firm specializing in personal injury. Far from an “ambulance chaser,” Anh has built a successful practice based on her skills as an attorney. When she shrewdly pursued an aggressive billboard campaign during the pandemic, she skyrocketed to success and has now become a ubiquitous personality all across California. -- Sponsored by Stem Social https://stemsocial.io https://instagram.com/stem.social Also sponsored by Lost Soul Courier Collective - call or text (415) 275-1922 for free Narcan delivery in San Francisco https://lostsoulcouriercollective.org For more info contact @traceyh415 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: historyofthebaypodcast@gmail.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 01:41 Parents immigrating from Asia 04:45 Criminal justice 07:48 Dregs' law background 10:49 Public defender's office 14:32 Applying to law school 20:36 Representation for Asian American women in law 23:56 Passing the bar exam 27:25 Starting her own law firm 39:19 Personal injury cases 44:50 Billboards 51:32 Expanding the business 56:49 Billboard costs 1:02:37 Becoming an icon 1:06:09 Competition 1:09:29 Putting yourself out there --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
Yung LB, Joeski and Rozay are three of the founders of Runtz, one of the most popular cannabis brands in history. Their story starts before legalization, when powerful strains like purple, kush, and champagne were still exotic and hard to find. They met through their mutual passions for music and cannabis culture and started touring as the Cookie Boyz, mentored by artists like Berner and The Jacka. Once they met the growers who created the strain that would become Runtz, they innovated new ways to promote, market, and brand a strain that had never been done before. Years later, Runtz is still a premier cannabis strain and has opened up multiple opportunities for entrepreneurship. -- Sponsored by Stem Social https://stemsocial.io https://instagram.com/stem.social Also sponsored by Lost Soul Courier Collective - call or text (415) 275-1922 for free Narcan delivery in San Francisco https://lostsoulcouriercollective.org For more info contact @traceyh415 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: historyofthebaypodcast@gmail.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced -- Hat by So Fresh Clothing: https://sofreshclothing.com Hoodie by Rebel 8: https://rebel8.com --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 04:00 Early strains in the Bay 13:11 Becoming entrepreneurs 28:14 Learning from Berner 33:07 GMO strains 35:41 Legalization 42:57 Creating the Runtz brand 54:25 Early success 01:01:07 Cookies lawsuit 01:07:16 How to build a successful brand 01:11:12 Current projects --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
