What's up, people? This week on the podcast, I sit down with the profoundly inspiring Adisa Banjoko—a true renaissance man whose life bridges martial arts, music, philosophy, and youth empowerment. As the founder of Hip Hop Chess Federation and 64 Blocks, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, philosopher, author, educator, and podcaster, Adisa brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to the conversation. We explore his journey through martial arts and hip-hop, the creation of the HHCF and how it spawned 64 Blocks, and how chess, BJJ, and lyrical expression combine to elevate at-risk youth. Adisa shares powerful stories about mentorship, the mental game of jiu-jitsu, and the role Stoic philosophy plays in life both on and off the mats. We also dig into his community-focused initiative, 64 Blocks, and what it means to build programs that cultivate resilience, creativity, and responsibility. From chaining submissions to composing rhymes, Adisa draws surprising parallels between combat and art—and he even reveals what's more mentally taxing: rolling with a world champ or playing a deep chess match. This episode is packed with wisdom for coaches, grapplers, creatives, and anyone striving to live with greater purpose and presence. Episode 321 features Teju Adisa-Farrar, the founder and co-creator of the Black Fiber & Textile Network and the creator/host of the Black Material Geographies podcast, alongside Layla K. Feghali, the founder of River Rose Remembrance, a Plantcestral & Ancestral Re-Membrance practitioner, cultural worker, author & story re-collector (archivist). Teju is currently the Director of Outreach & Programs for the Fibers Fund, and co-creates with members of BFTN. Layla's book, The Land In Our Bones, showcases an exploration of the herbs & land-based medicines of Lebanon & Cana'an, highlighting the power of culture's relationship with land. “I think of culture as a way of relating to your environment, including those around you, making sense & beliefs based on your environment, & creating a sense of a shared identity based on the place that you are in. With the creation of colonialism & the transatlantic slave trade, and this very globalized neoliberal world, now culture is less connected to a place & more connected to what and how we consume.” -Teju “I feel like that relational way of existing or of relating is kind of what ultimately yields or inspires I guess what folks would call a sustainable way of navigating things. Because it requires a conversation beyond the self and with the entirety of the living world that I dwell in and that I'm a part of and that I impact and that impact me, and the ways that they're alive.” -Layla MAY THEME — Connecting With Nature To Unveil Ways To Reimagine Futures As the sustainability conversation continues to evolve, we often will hear mention of regionality, or the importance of thinking more locally in supply chains or manufacturing. While this is a great aspect to explore further, it only touches the surface of the depth connected to geography, location and place. This week's guests each approach education and storytelling through place-oriented lenses. While they are each uniquely different, these geography-oriented avenues teach us so much about what is often missing from the conversation. As we've explored through various angles this season, culture is integral to sustainability. Our guests this week shed light on the many ways that culture can teach us about land, history and legacy. How understanding the land, its history and the cultures woven into it, can lead us toward restorative justice and regenerative practices. As one of our guests so beautifully writes in her book: “The real focus of sustainability should be to recenter these Indigenous technologies rooted in multigenerational relationships to place, and teach younger generations how to harvest in ways that ensure the life of these plants will not only continue but spread per this ancestral knowledge.” Links from the conversation: Teju's Website Black Fiber & Textile Network River Rose Remembrance Website Follow Teju on Instagram Follow Layla on Instagram

Gisela AdisaTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know film, television, and Broadway actress Gisela Adisa. In this episode, we chat about her being the child of immigrant parents and growing up on the East Coast. We talk about what their hopes for their children were; and how those hopes panned out. Then we discuss some of her film projects, and some of her theatrical works. Finally, Gisela tells us everything we need to know about this new touring revival production of 1776; where she plays Sam Adams. Jayne Amelia speaks with former foster youth, Adisa. Adisa compares himself to a lion cub who had to fight for survival all his young life against the bigger badder lions all so hungry and looking to feed. Born in Long Beach to a single mom who was declared unfit to raise her children, he grew up on the streets of Los Angeles. Adisa and his siblings were removed from her and placed in foster care. Adisa was only nine at the time (but already considered himself a "hoodlum" as he says) and was the protector of his youngest brother who was still in diapers. He became part of the foster care to prison pipeline and was incarcerated at 17 until freed at the age of 51.He is now employed with Urban Alchemy in San Francisco's Tenderloin cleaning up the streets and saving the lives of vulnerable people every night.Urban AlchemySee bonusbabies.org to know more about what we are doing and please donate to support us by making a 100% tax-deductible contribution. Adisa Banjoko's contributions to hip-hop go back to its beginnings in the Bay Area. He started off as a rapper with the group Freedom Troop 187, who made it into the first unsigned hype column in The Source before disbanding. As a senior at Oceana High in Pacifica, he did Eazy-E's first interview ever for his high school newspaper. From there, he ended up writing for The Source and other acclaimed publications, and encountering 2pac, Digital Underground, Gang Starr, EPMD, Public Enemy, 2 Live Crew, and many others. Adisa's been able to witness so many Bay Area hip-hop stories, including the rise of DJ Vlad and Zion-I. Notoriously, a disagreement with KRS-One resulted in an explosive confrontation between him and Adisa at Stanford University, which he breaks down in detail in this episode. As the founder of Hip-Hop Chess Federation, he's worked on chess events with RZA and GZA and is now partnering with them on a new organization called 64 Blocks. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
