Floppy Days 164 - The Sphere, Part 1 with Ben Zotto Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FloppyDays Sponsors: 8-Bit Classics  Arcade Shopper and https://thekeep.net  FutureVision Research  Tuc's Workbench  Hello!!! and welcome to episode 164 of the Floppy Days Podcast, for June, 2026.  My name is Randy Kindig and I'm your host for this joy ride through the rewarding hobby of vintage computers and computer history. I have to start off by apologizing, as I'll actually be stepping back in the computer timeline for this episode.  Sometimes it happens.  My goal from the beginning of this podcast was to go through computers in the approximate order they were released (at least by year).  And, I've largely done that with this podcast.  However, sometimes a machine comes up that I didn't know about or didn't recognize its importance at the time I put together the list of computers to cover.  This month that computer is the Sphere, which was introduced in 1975.  That's right, I said 1975.  That was the same year as the Altair and even before the Apple 1. What was the Sphere and why do we care?  The Sphere was the first "personal computer," defined as such by Byte Magazine due to its consumer focus and built-in keyboard and monitor.  Now, I know that many computers can claim the moniker of first "personal computer", and rightly so, but this one has the endorsement of an early, well-respected, long-running computer magazine and they have good reason for feeling this way about the Sphere.  Once you hear the details, you'll see just how ground-breaking this machine was at a very early period of computer history. Not only that, some of the personal stories behind the machine are simply downright fascinating. Ben Zotto is the undisputed expert on the Sphere in these times, after finding an abandoned machine sitting on the sidewalk and deciding to adopt it and learn more about it.  He recently wrote a comprehensive book on the Sphere called "Go Computer Now!" that I mentioned the last episode I had acquired.  Well, I ended up reading that book cover-to-cover and really enjoying it.  So much so that I decided to contact Ben and see if he would be willing to come onto the podcast to talk about his book and the Sphere Computer.  Thankfully, he was.  This podcast actually serves two purposes: first as an interview with Ben to learn more about him and his book, and secondly as an overview of a computer I didn't cover back when I started this podcast back in 2013 with the Altair 8800 and the Apple 1. So, this will be a 2-part journey on the Sphere.  This month we talk in great detail with Ben Zotto about how he ended up going down the Sphere rabbit hole and all the great things he's done to promote an important machine that was forgotten in the annals of history.  Next month, Ben and I go through all the usual topics about the Sphere: history, tech specs, using the machine, current Web sites and a great deal more. I really hope you enjoy hearing about the Sphere and meeting Ben Zotto! The Simply Vegan podcast is your weekly dose of plant-based food, news and topical chat with Vegan Food & Living's Holly and Molly. On today's show, we're chatting to PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk following the announcement that she's updated her will to send parts of her body to King Charles, the French president, Crufts and Aintree Racecourse so that her activism can continue after her death. Ingrid tells us what PETA have achieved over the past 40 years following their campaigns against animal testing, fur and animal use in circuses and shares their plans to disrupt the leather industry next. We discuss activism as a whole and parallels to the Suffragettes and Ingrid fills us in on why she's leaving parts of her body to well-known figures and organisations. Gruesome, or a necessary way to raise awareness? We'll let you decide. But as always we cover the lighter side of veganism by sharing some plant-based cooking inspiration – including the salsa verde that Holly's putting on EVERYTHING and Molly's to-die-for panko aubergine sandwich with olive tapenade. On the 15th April 2023 the Grand National, an annual horse racing event, took place at Aintree Racecourse in the UK. Animal Rising attracted a lot of media attention for storming the tracks to prevent these races from happening. I recently spoke with Dan, the cofounder of Animal Rising, to find out why he thinks this is the most important thing to be doing with his time, why a British tradition should be stopped, and whether radical activism is the answer. We also talk about the environmental and ecological collapse of the home we live in, how the answer to the worlds problems lies behind our dietary choices, and how changing a lot of peoples minds is easier than changing the mind of just one person. Thanks to Dan, and to Animal Rising, and thanks for listening."We've created a national conversation that's led to millions of people reassessing whether they agree with horse racing for the first time in their lives."

Verna Volker – the founder of Native Women Running – says it acts as a safe space for Native women, who run for healing, ceremony and medicine. She believes a lot of the women are carrying historical trauma and running has become a way to grieve and heal. She has run previously to highlight the plight of Missing and murdered Indigenous women and says non-Native people don't realise that Native American people view these women as their own relatives. Volker wants to inspire little girls to run and says the prospect of completing the Boston marathon with her own team of runners is unreal. We hear the story of how sport is helping a refugee from Ukraine living in Poland. Yuliia describes her arduous journey from Kyiv to Tychy, leaving her husband behind in Ukraine and the generosity of Polish people. The American Football team her husband plays for in Poland have been providing her with support and a place to stay. She's a dance teacher by trade and has been teaching classes in Poland and sending any money she makes back to Ukraine. The head of academy sports medicine and science at Tottenham Hotspur – Laurence Gant – joins us to discuss his bike ride across Great Britain in memory of his friend and former Spurs Under 23s coach Ugo Ehiogu. Ugo passed away five years ago and to mark the anniversary, Gant has cycled between all the football clubs that Ugo played for across a five-day period this week. He started at Glasgow Rangers and we speak to him before he sets off on the final leg of his journey to Aston Villa. John Hunt joins us live from Aintree Racecourse ahead of the Grand National, Iain Carter brings us the latest from the Masters at Augusta and Juliette Ferrington is live at Goodison Park ahead of Everton's game against Manchester United.

Today on Human Business, we're talking about Starting a Movement. Simone Roche is CEO and Founder of Northern Power Women launched this campaign out of a passion to connect and engage with people about gender equality.Simone started her career in the male-dominated military and then held roles at Aintree Racecourse, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the Arena Convention Centre Liverpool and the Olympics, and she is quick to note that she was not treated differently because she was female. So it wasn’t until she became the Director for a campaign supporting women in the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industry – and she was asked to be a champion for the Government Equalities Office – that gender equality grew to be her passion. When the International Festival for Business was held in Liverpool in 2014, Simone campaigned to include businesses’ role in promoting gender equality and developing talent, and held a sell-out event focused on the role women played in driving the economy.Men and women suddenly saw women’s benefit to the economy – and the role the North could play in driving that. And Simone saw the need and opportunity to focus on gender balance in the northern powerhouse region. Northern Power Women was born.
