Once again, I want to reiterate what the Sphere was and why do we care?  The Sphere was the first "personal computer," defined as such by Byte Magazine due to its consumer focus and built-in keyboard and monitor.  Many computers can claim the moniker of first "personal computer", and rightly so, but this one has the endorsement of an early, well-respected, long-running computer magazine and they have good reason for feeling this way about the Sphere.  Once you hear the details, you'll see just how ground-breaking this machine was at a very early period of computer history. Not only that, some of the personal stories behind the machine are simply downright fascinating. Ben Zotto is the undisputed expert on the Sphere in these times, after finding an abandoned machine sitting on the sidewalk and deciding to adopt it and learn more about it.  He recently wrote a comprehensive book on the Sphere called "Go Computer Now!" that Ben and I spent a lot of time talking about in the last episode -- which again was the first episode on the Sphere.  This episode series actually serves two purposes: first as an interview with Ben to learn more about him and his book, and secondly as an overview of a computer I didn't cover back when I started this podcast back in 2013 with the Altair 8800 and the Apple 1. Face au vieillissement de la population et à l'augmentation des cas de maladie d'Alzheimer, de nouvelles solutions d'habitat émergent. Parmi elles, un projet inédit en Belgique francophone attire particulièrement l'attention : Vice Versa Habitat, une maison partagée destinée aux personnes de plus de 65 ans vivant avec Alzheimer ou des troubles cognitifs comparables.Située à Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, cette grande maison de près de 500 m² accueillera prochainement huit résidents. Les travaux débuteront cet été pour une ouverture prévue à l'automne. Au programme : 8 chambres individuelles, des espaces communs, une cuisine, une salle à manger, un atelier, un jardin et de nombreux lieux de vie pensés pour favoriser les échanges et maintenir une vie sociale riche.L'idée est née d'un constat simple : entre le maintien à domicile, qui devient parfois compliqué, et l'entrée en maison de repos, souvent redoutée, il manque des solutions intermédiaires. Ici, l'objectif n'est pas de créer une structure de soins mais un véritable lieu de vie partagé.Les futurs habitants conserveront leur autonomie autant que possible tout en bénéficiant d'un environnement rassurant. Des aides familiales seront présentes 24 heures sur 24 afin d'accompagner le quotidien, de soutenir les résidents en cas de besoin et de favoriser le bien-être collectif.Comme l'explique Chantal Dehon, impliquée dans le projet, l'accent est davantage mis sur la présence humaine que sur la surveillance. Chacun reste libre de ses choix, mais personne ne se retrouve isolé face aux difficultés du quotidien. L'entraide, la convivialité et les relations sociales constituent le cœur même du projet.Les soins médicaux ne sont pas intégrés directement dans la structure mais restent parfaitement accessibles. Médecins, infirmiers, kinésithérapeutes ou autres professionnels pourront intervenir selon les besoins de chaque résident.Autre particularité importante : le projet est porté par une fondation d'utilité publique. L'objectif n'est donc pas la rentabilité immobilière mais bien la création d'une solution humaine et accessible. Les responsables souhaitent maintenir un coût comparable à celui d'une structure classique. Trois niveaux tarifaires sont actuellement envisagés afin de tenir compte des revenus de chacun.Le budget se composera de plusieurs volets : le loyer, l'accompagnement assuré par l'association, les services d'aide familiale et de garde de nuit ainsi qu'une participation aux frais de la vie quotidienne tels que l'énergie, les repas ou les charges communes.Les personnes intéressées pourront découvrir le projet lors d'une journée portes ouvertes organisée le jeudi 18 juin entre 15h et 20h. He was born to a noble family in Maastricht (in modern-day Netherlands). When his spiritual father Bishop Theodard was killed in 671, St Lambert was elected Bishop of Maastricht despite his youth. He was loved by his flock for his holiness, ascetic labors and almsgiving, but was driven from his see in 675 after his patron King Childeric II was assasinated. He withdrew to the Monastery of Stavelot where he lived for seven years as one of the brethren, claiming no privileges despite his office. Once, getting up to pray during the night, he accidentally disturbed the monastic silence. The Abbot called out for whoever was responsible to do penance by standing barefoot in the snow before a cross outside the monastery church. In the morning the Abbot was dismayed to see the Bishop standing barefoot, covered with snow, before the cross, his face shining. The Abbot sought to apologize, but Lambert replied that he was honored to serve God like the Apostles, in cold and nakedness.   When King Pepin of Heristal took power in 681, he restored Lambert to his see, despite the Saint's desire to remain in obscurity. The holy bishop renewed his pastoral labors with vigor, visiting the most distant parishes and preaching the Gospel to the pagans who still inhabited the area, despite danger and threats. But when King Pepin put away his wife and replaced her with his concubine Alpais, St Lambert was the only Bishop who dared to rebuke him. For this he incurred the wrath of Alpais, who ordered his death. His assassins carried out their evil commission, even though they found a cross shining above the humble dwelling where he was staying.   Saint Lambert is one of the best-loved Saints of the Netherlands and Belgium, where many parish churches are dedicated to him. His relics are now in the Belgian city of Liège.

Nous sommes au milieu du XIVe siècle. Jean le Bel, chroniqueur liégeois, chanoine de Saint-Lambert, né à la fin du siècle précédent, est en pleine rédaction d'un ouvrage consacré au début de la guerre de Cent ans, ainsi que l'on nommera, plus tard, les multiples affrontements, entrecoupés de périodes de trêve, qui ont opposés les rois de France et d'Angleterre pendant 116 ans exactement, entre 1337 et 1453. Dans sa chronique, le liégeois affirme, notamment, que le roi d'Angleterre, Edouard III, aurait violé l'épouse de son proche ami William Montagu, comte de Salisbury. Jean le Bel, qui est pourtant un admirateur d'Edouard, invente, en réalité, ce forfait après que le souverain, qui se rêvait en nouveau roi Arthur, a renoncé à conquérir la couronne de France. Avant de tomber dans l'oubli, la sombre histoire du chroniqueur connaît une série de transformations jusqu'à devenir un grand récit d'amour courtois et même l'origine du célèbre et prestigieux ordre de la Jarretière. Nous sommes en 1296. À l'occasion d'un discours sur la légitimité de la fiscalité royale, Godefroid de Fontaines, originaire de Liège, qui fut chanoine de la Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Lambert et enseigne la théologie à l'Université de Paris, en vient à mettre en garde les individus face aux beaux discours des gouvernants. Il dit : « Puisque, en effet, le prince a coutume d'alléguer la nécessité de la chose publique et l'utilité de tous les sujets lorsqu'il impose une telle charge, si ce n'est pas le cas, il ne peut, de droit, l'imposer. Si l'on dit qu'il suffit que le prince dise que c'est bien le cas, et qu'il agit en vertu d'un conseil de qualité et d'importance, cela n'a aucune valeur. Car les tyrans avaient également coutume de le dire [...] Or presque tous les princes tendent à gouverner comme des tyrans. Plus loin, il ajoute : « Lorsqu'un homme gouverne des hommes libres et non des esclaves, il ne tient le droit de gouverner que de la communauté toute entière, c'est elle qui l'élit, qui l'institue ou l'accepte et lui donne son consentement. Son gouvernement ne doit s'exercer que pour le bien commun, pour l'utilité commune ». S'il est une notion qui a fait couler beaucoup d'encre, c'est, assurément, celle de bien commun. Un concept toujours très actuel, dans une société que l'on dit pourtant égocentrée, où les intérêts individuels supplantent souvent ceux de la collectivité. Mais quel rôle ce concept de « bien commun » joue-t-il entre gouvernants et gouvernés ? He withdrew to the Monastery of Stavelot where he lived for seven years as one of the brethren, claiming no privileges despite his office. Once, getting up to pray during the night, he accidentally disturbed the monastic silence. The Abbot called out for whoever was responsible to do penance by standing barefoot in the snow before a cross outside the monastery church. In the morning the Abbot was dismayed to see the Bishop standing barefoot, covered with snow, before the cross, his face shining. The Abbot sought to apologize, but Lambert replied that he was honored to serve God like the Apostles, in cold and nakedness.   When King Pepin of Heristal took power in 681, he restored Lambert to his see, despite the Saint's desire to remain in obscurity. The holy bishop renewed his pastoral labors with vigor, visiting the most distant parishes and preaching the Gospel to the pagans who still inhabited the area, despite danger and threats. But when King Pepin put away his wife and replaced her with his concubine Alpais, St Lambert was the only Bishop who dared to rebuke him. For this he incurred the wrath of Alpais, who ordered his death. His assassins carried out their evil commission, even though they found a cross shining above the humble dwelling where he was staying.   Saint Lambert is one of the best-loved Saints of the Netherlands and Belgium, where many parish churches are dedicated to him. His relics are now in the Belgian city of Liège.
