With the technical directive reducing the permitted flexibility of the front wings the big talking point of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, why didn't it shake up the competitive order as some hoped?Former F1 technical director Gary Anderson explains that, and the reasons why he always expected the effects to be more subtle, as he looks back at the big technical stories from the Spanish Grand Prix weekend. That includes a look at the steel skid block tests run in Friday practice and the potential impact of the change from titanium for selected races. And whether it makes sense to make such a change given the alternative means to reduce the chance of grass fires ignited by sparks. Host Edd Straw also fires listener questions to Gary on a variety of topics, including active suspension, core versus surface tyre temperature and the Venturi effect.Got a question for Gary? Will artificial intelligence help you do your job, or will it just straight-up do your job and leave you unemployable? Or will the future bring something else entirely — either between those two extremes or a world that we simply cannot imagine yet? And are we already starting to see signs of that future emerging? On this episode of The New Bazaar, Cardiff is joined by economist Nathan Goldschlag, Research Director at the Economic Innovation Group. Until recently, Nathan was Principal Economist at the U.S. Census Bureau's Center for Economic Studies, where among other things he led research on the impact of technology, including AI, on the economy. Any worthwhile list of the world's best economists on the subject of AI and work would have to include him. Cardiff and Nathan go through Nathan's own research* and also filter out the megaton of nonsense on the topic and discuss some of the work done by others — research, essays, meanderings — that they think is actually worth sharing with listeners. They discuss, among other things: How many businesses are now using AI to produce goods and servicesHow have things changed since the launch and popularization of large language modelsEconomic growth consequences of AIWhether “learn to code” is still good advice The skills that still matter To steer or not to steer the AI future* Nathan's research on AI was done in collaboration with a large team of researchers at the Center for Economic Studies at the U.S. Census Bureau including Emin Dinlersoz, Lucia Foster, David Beede, John Haltiwanger, Zach Kroff, Nikolas Zolas, Gary Anderson, and Eric Childress, along with program area partners including Kathryn Bonney, Cory Breaux, Cathy Buffington, and Keith Savage, as well as academic partners including Daron Acemoglu, Erik Brynjolfsson, Kristina McElheran, and Pascual Restrepo. With five wins from a possible six in 2025 (plus another victory in the Miami sprint), you might be forgiven for thinking McLaren's MCL39 is without fault. But listen to drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and its clear the car isn't always perfect to drive, - especially in qualifying trim, and on this podcast host Edd Straw and former F1 technical director Gary Anderson look at the reasons for that. Following that, we've been inundated with tech questions from listeners recently, so the rest of the podcast is dedicated to answering them. As ever, it's an interesting and varied selection, with questions on dirty air, engine modes, brake callipers, visor tear offs, and Lewis Hamilton's current struggles improving with the change of formula for 2026.Want to ask Gary a question?

With each new administration, there is opportunity for change and reform. In the new Trump Administration, reform isn't seen as a secondary effect of a leadership change but as a requirement. What reform options should the new Pentagon leadership explore under the Trump Administration?Joining us to discuss this and related topics is Gary Anderson, Colonel, USMC (Ret.). On the latest episode of The Race F1 Tech Show, Edd Straw and former F1 technical director Gary Anderson take a look at the current drama surrounding F1's 2026 engine regulations, with stakeholders discussing significant changes to the rules aimed at heading off fears about cars repeatedly running out of energy.Do these changes suggest the rule direction was wrong in the first place, or are there other factors at play? Before that, Gary muses on Lewis Hamilton's current predicament at Ferrari, and suggests the setup direction he'd push the seven-time world champion in if he was in Ferrari's engineering team. And finally, the episode is rounded out with four excellent questions from listeners, which cover dirty air, how car liveries are applied, Max Verstappen's recent upshift issue, and whether Renault might be tempted back into the power unit game, should F1 revert to V10 engines one day. When our friend Gary Anderson passed unexpectedly last October, we found ourselves reflecting on the extraordinary power of enduring friendship and its ability to shape our lives in profound ways. This special episode brings together the voices of Gary's longtime friends to celebrate a life well-lived through stories, laughter, music, and shared memories. From high school connections to sailing adventures on Lake Superior that spanned decades, we explore the qualities that made Gary such a treasured friend – his protective nature, problem-solving abilities, sense of adventure, and gift for bringing people together.Music flows throughout this tribute, serving as both backdrop and vehicle for memory. Friends recall sailing trips where Van Morrison provided the soundtrack to their "heaven on earth" moments – those perfect instances of togetherness where nothing exists beyond friendship, conversation, and natural beauty. Through these recollections, we witness how friendship helps navigate life's unpredictable waters, with Gary's expertise as a sailor mirroring his approach to relationships – prioritizing safety, enjoying the journey, and weathering storms together. The heart of this episode lies in its gentle reminder about life's fragility and the importance of expressing appreciation for our friends while we can. As one friend reflects, "When you lose somebody that you've spent such quality time with... waking up to another day is such a gift." This perspective invites you to consider your own friendships – how you're nurturing them, what you contribute, and whether you're making sufficient time for these vital connections.Listen to this celebration of friendship, then reach out to someone important in your life. Like a muscle needing regular exercise, friendships require attention to remain strong. Who in your world deserves to hear "I love you, man" before the boat comes in?Support the show
Ferrari's Chinese Grand Prix weekend fell apart in embarrassing fashion when, after Lewis Hamilton's fine sprint race win on Saturday, both the Briton and team-mate Charles Leclerc were disqualified from Sunday's Grand Prix for excessive skid wear and an underweight car respectively. Alongside host Edd Straw, Gary also takes a close look at how the rest of the big four teams' cars have performed over the first two races, plus he answers four tech questions sent in by listeners covering underbody airflow, front wing slot gaps, and more. The F1: Chequered Flag team pay tribute to Eddie Jordan, who has died at the age of 76. Mark Gallagher, who was part of the management board at Jordan Grand Prix, and Gary Anderson, who designed the very first Jordan Grand Prix car, join Harry Benjamin and BBC F1 correspondent Andrew Benson. One of the most flamboyant characters in the sport, Jordan achieved rare success as an independent team owner, winning four grand prix between 1991 and 2005. He later became a television pundit, where he was known for his outspoken views and ability to break major news stories.
On this special episode of The Race F1 Podcast, we pay tribute to legendary F1 team boss Eddie Jordan, following his sad passing. Edd Straw is joined by Jon Noble, who as a journalist enjoyed many encounters with Jordan in the F1 paddock, and Gary Anderson, EJ's friend and former colleague, who designed the very first Jordan F1 car and was the team's long-time technical leader. Together, they reflect on the life and legacy of a man who was a true original - the last of the truly successful independent Formula 1 team owners and one of the most charismatic figures ever to grace grand prix racing.
