First pages are impossible… so we're hearing from authors about how they got them right. In this episode, Jane Roper discusses the first pages of her second novel, The Society of Shame, and how she forced herself into a different writing process to get the book done. We also talk about the necessity of being hard on your characters, finding your story by giving your protagonist the worst possible version of what they think they want, and digging into the details your subconscious has offered you as you write your way forward.Roper's first pages can be found here.Help local bookstores and our authors by buying this book on Bookshop.Click here for the audio/video version of this interview. The above link will be available for 48 hours. Missed it? The podcast version is always available, both here and on your favorite podcast platform.Jane Roper is the author of two novels, The Society of Shame, and Eden Lake, and a memoir, Double Time: How I Survived–and Mostly Thrived–Through the First Three Years of Mothering Twins. Her writing has appeared in Salon, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, The Millions, Poets & Writers, The Rumpus, Cognoscenti, Writers' Digest and elsewhere, and has been included in the anthology Labor Day: True Birth Stories by today's Best Women Writers. She has taught writing at GrubStreet, Follow Your Art Community Studios, The University of Iowa, the Sanibel Writers' Conference, and The Muse & The Marketplace. Jane is also a freelance copywriter and brand strategist. Originally from Fairfield, Connecticut, Jane is a graduate of Williams College and the Iowa Writers' Workshop. The Covid-19 pandemic is still spreading in much of the United States, but how does that impact kids? The Kids Crew visit with New Mexico Department of Health Secretary Kathyleen Kunkel about the virus, learn how children can help us all get control of its creeping spread. Find out what makes a “super spreader” and how schools will be impacted by the deadly disease. Even though there's much uncertainty about the future, we get some answers from Secretary Kunkel. Plus we hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about what's going on with plants around the world. We also have a review of a series of kids books that are to help children normalize wearing face masks, Face Mask Fun With Hamilton by Renuka Christoph. All of this is mixed with great music, including new releases from Pierce Freelon, Suzanne Jamieson, Alastair Moock, EVT Kids, Lindsay Munroe, and more. Isaac's review of Face Mask Fun With Hamilton book series is here: https://www.childrenshour.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IsaacBookReviewFacemaskFunWHamiltonTCH080320.mp3 Here are some tips for talking about difficult subjects with kids from Ryan Howard, Smart Parent Advice. The Children's Hour is supported by the Cultural Services Department and the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund at the City of Albuquerque, city councilor Pat Davis, as well as Bernalillo County, New Mexico's Commission. This project is supported in part by an award from New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts. Above The Basement - Boston Music and Conversation

Grammy nominated Folk and Americana singer-songwriter Alastair Moock became inspired by music at a young age when he first saw Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie in concert and has passed on that inspiration in his music and his educational programs in local schools. He is a solo artist that speaks a language we can all relate to, whether age 5 or 95, and he is a quintessential collaborator with fellow singer-songwriters in the studio and on the stage. We sat with Alastair to talk about his career transformation from adult folk to family music, what parenting did for his music and what it's like to write songs with your 5 year old daughter at her hospital bedside.

His works have twice been included in The Fids and Kamily Industry Critics’ Top 3 Albums of the Year. Long one of Boston’s premier folk artists, Alastair turned his attention to family music after the birth of his twin daughters in 2006.
