Totally 80s and 90s Recall

Rap music in the 1980s was a groundbreaking and rapidly evolving genre that laid the foundation for modern hip-hop. It started as an underground movement in New York and transformed into a cultural phenomenon by the end of the decade. Early artists like the Sugarhill Gang and Kurtis Blow laid the foundation for artists like Run DMC, the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J to begin to bring rap to a larger audience. By the end of the 80s, rap was becoming big business and was very profitable for record companies. Rap was not without controversy throughout the 80s though, many political and other groups were against the style, sound and lyrical content of rap. Just like heavy metal, it did not conform to certain musical norms that many Americans had come to know. So this week, Dave and Rob will look back at the rise of rap in the 80s and reveal our favorite songs from the decade. From Grandmaster Flash to 2 Live Crew, we'll listen to the changing styles and subject matter of this once taboo art form. So get ready to get down with two white boys from Oregon, as they lay out the best songs they know from 80s Rap.   Pandora: https://pandora.app.link/iq8iShjXOLb Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/id1662282694  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/11dk5TUoLUk4euD1Te1EYG?si=b37496eb6e784408  Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/1960c8f9-158d-43ac-89a6-d868ea1fe077/totally-80s-and-90s-recall  YouTube Podcasts: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH9lGakNgCDZUkkHMUu88uXYMJu_33Rab&si=xo0EEVJRSwS68mWZ   Playlists: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1WwiWqtbL68ChjKPI4c0Yu?si=GHa1JQX2TDmdqfYZ7YOu_w  Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/80s-rap/pl.u-aZb0aL4IV4ar0B?ls Amazon: https://music.amazon.com/user-playlists/0daab3e36d4b42b6b26dc5b094da8519sune?marketplaceId=ATVPDKIKX0DER&musicTerritory=US&ref=dm_sh_rxwKMF1lw3AxNUoyDKzWQ8s2r   Contact Us: Website: https://totally80s90srecall.podbean.com/  Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com LinkTree:https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall

Rawlston Charles was born in Tobago and moved to Trinidad when he was 15. He migrated to the United States on December 12, 1967, with his copy of Kitchener's 1967 album. Initially, he got involved in the automobile business, repairing, buying and selling cars. He would take his calypso records with him whenever he went out to lime or party on weekends, also working as a DJ, only playing calypso, which was not as popular at the time compared to other genres. It was challenging to get calypso records at the time, costing more to import into the US. He established Charley's Calypso City in Brooklyn on July 4th, 1972, and, subsequently, Charley's Records where he began traveling back to Trinidad to establish connections with calypsonians and bandleaders and acquire music. Despite not having any prior experience in the music industry, Charles became an executive producer, producing some of the greatest calypsos and soca hits. He worked with Sparrow, Rose, Shorty, Explainer, Kitchener, Shadow, Maestro, Swallow, and Becket. The band Charlie's Roots, was named after Charley because he sponsored it, giving them $14,000 to purchase instruments and equipment, but he also nurtured several leading musicians and notable calypsonians, including David Rudder, one of the greatest calypsonians of the modern era. He created Calypso House, where he invited calypsonians to stay at no charge. In 1977, Charles earned himself the respect of the biggest players in the arena when he made a judgment call on a piece of music that at first left people saying he was a madman. The song entitled "Tempo" by Calypso Rose became the first Road March title ever won by a woman. It was historical and a massive hit, all thanks to Charles, who refused to compromise on his vision for the song. In 1984, Charles built and opened his recording studio, which was used by calypso and soca artists as well as major performers on the East Coast hip-hop industry, such as Dougie Fresh, Slick Rick, and RUN-DMC. The studio's gold records were once displayed in the studio's hallway, but most of them were stolen years ago, and only a couple of them were salvaged. In 2019, his daughter, Tina Charles, directed a movie called "Charley's Records," featuring prominent artists such as Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Doug E Fresh, Kurtis Blow, Prime Minister Keith Rowley, Machel Montano, and Super Blue. Despite piracy and other challenges in the music industry, Charles continues to be optimistic about the future. He believes that the younger generation's increasing interest in soca and calypso music is promising, and many young artists are exploring what was there before them. He hopes that calypso and soca music will continue to thrive and reach a wider audience. Charles's career, passion, and life are that of an American immigrant story of an unsung hero and pioneer who opened doors for many artists to waltz to fame and fortune. Rawlston Charles may have lost more money than they have made profits, but his legacy remains a crucial piece of Caribbean music history, with an exhibition in the National Museum of African History & Culture #otc #onthecallpodcast #podcaster #podcast #ozzie #host #service #shininglight #trinidadian #trinidadandtobago #trinidad #caribbean #caribbeanculture #culture #Triniculture #TriniDiaspora #Trinistories #community #Trinicommunity #sponsor #advocate #calypso  @charleysrecords  #steelpan #@pelhamgoddard #studio #blackradio  @CalypsoRoseofficial  #anthem #halloffame #god #children #olympics #documentary #grammys #frankiemcintosh#acolyte #church #faith #bell #marbles #elijah #nationalmuseum #national #museum #african #history

In a bold move of solidarity, Kurtis Blow decided not to perform, leaving the packed venue in shock. The fallout from this decision reverberated far beyond the club's walls. Kurtis Blow took legal action against the Whisky a Go Go, ultimately suing the venue. In a surprising act of camaraderie and justice, Blow shared the profits of the settlement with Butcher, turning a moment of conflict into one of unexpected triumph and unity. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/richard-castro63/support

“What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back!”If you were really down with the cool kids in 1984, you would have most definitely have been passing around the school prized C90 cassettes featuring much copied Streetsounds compilations. And somewhere in there was Kurtis Blow's AJ Scratch track with those immortal sampled words from the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972. Straight out onto The BMXs and down to throw some funky worm shapes on that strip of lino!Or, in this writer's case, 1984 was mainly spent in a bedroom hovering over the play and pause button to catch a clean edit (without Simon Bates) of Two Tribes, still at number one after 5 weeks! But which mix would we get this week? Now, THIS was anticipation, pop kids!1984. A pop year of decadence, contradictions, conflict, controversy and coming of age. A year that authors (and the BBC) told us would feature impending, inevitable Armageddon. Annihilation, it turned out, came in the shape of a plethora of 12” mixes, plastic smiles, snoods, 808 drum machines, hairspray, neon and (red) balloons. How was it for you?In the third decade of the 21st century, a time surely we wouldn't (a) remember 1984 or (b) still be around to remember 1984, the team at NOW Music HQ presented the second in a (now) glorious series of curated Yearbooks. And what an album (and accompanying extra volume!) we have to rediscover. The sun is most definitely shining brighter than Doris Day!So for this special episode we're joined by two poptastic friends of the show to take a deep dive into 1984. Journalist, DJ and author Ian Wade and journalist, author and broadcaster Jude Rogers.Jude can be found contributing musings and writing about music, culture and much more in The Guardian, Observer and The Quietus amongst many others. Her first (best selling!) book, The Sound of Being Human: How Music Shapes Our Lives is available through White Rabbit books.Ian has written for Classic Pop, Record Collector, The Quietus, Official Charts, Sunday Times Culture as well as doing time at such titles as Smash Hits and The Face many years ago. He has worked as a PR on BBC's Later… with Jools Holland and occasionally DJs at Spiritland and Duckie. And his debut book 1984: The Year Pop went Queer is published by NineEight Books in July 2024.And whilst we don't take a forensic look at every one of the 80 tracks on the 1984 Yearbook (and the further 60 on the extra volume) we instead provide you with an opportunity to explore the sights, sounds, culture, music, genres, tribes and (school!) fashion that makes this year so thoroughly iconic for so many reasons.Join us then, as we turn up the neon and dance through mutually agreed destruction in celebration of 1984! My guest this week is mastering engineer Howie Weinberg, who has 20 Grammy Awards and 76 Grammy nominations, 4 TEC awards, 2 Juno awards, 1 Mercury Prize award, 200+ gold and platinum records, an unbelievable 19,000 total credits, and 91 billion streams. Howie started working in the mail room at Masterdisk in New York City but soon became the apprentice of mastering legend Bob Ludwig. Within a few months Howie began mastering tracks for hip hop stars like Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and Public Enemy. Since then he's mastered projects for legends like U2, Nirvana, Sheryl Crow, The Clash, Madonna, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, John Mellencamp, Ozzy Osbourne - the list goes on. During our interview Howie talked about mastering at the beginning of hip hop, the tremendous volume of work that he does, why he thinks vinyl is a fad, why he creates both an analog and digital master, and so much more. I spoke with Howie via zoom from his home in Santa Monica.  On the intro we look at Universal Music's patent to be able to embed binaural beats in label songs, and a look at the different eras of modern music that show when rock died. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 105931496, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

In this episode we welcome John Doran and Luke Turner to downtown Hammersmith and invite them to talk about their much-loved and newly-revamped Quietus "webzine". (That's Noughties-speak, for all you kids out there.) The intrepid duo look back on the 2008 birth of their baby and reflect on its survival and evolution over the subsequent 16 years. Quotes from pieces they wrote about Kanye West (2008) and Britpop "fakestalgia" (2014) prompt thoughts on such much-missed Quietus writers – and RBP contributors – as S(teven)Wells, Dele Fadele and Neil Kulkarni. Mention of a recent Quietus piece about Yoko Ono leads us to clips from Mark Kemp's 1992 audio interview with the pioneering avant-gardist whose life and work are celebrated in an exhibition at London's Tate Modern (15 February to 1 September, 2024). Ardent fans of Ono's woefully-overlooked solo albums, John and Luke talk about the relentless racist/misogynist abuse she's suffered as "the woman who broke up the Beatles" [sic]. Staying in the demi-monde of downtown New York transgression, we pay tribute to departed jazz-punk No Waver James Chance, another Quietus anti-icon, before Mark winds up the episode with quotes from newly-added library pieces about the Beatles (1963), the Temptations (1970), Kurtis Blow (1981), Jerry Dammers (1990) and Glen Campbell (1999). Finally, Jasper rounds things off with remarks on Atlanta's overshadowed rappers Goodie Mob... Many thanks to special guests John Doran and Luke Turner. Read the Quietus at thequietus.com, and find their books, including Jolly Lad and Men at War in all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Kanye West: Sensitive Soul, Modern Life Isn't Rubbish: The Trouble With Britpop Nostalgia, Yoko Ono audio, Q: Why Interview James Chance? A: Because He's There, Bow To The Devilish Prince: James Chance Interviewed, Downtown icon James Chance cuts loose, It's the Beatles! Part 5: How To Avoid The Stage Door Crowds... Enter Through The Roof, Temptations: no trouble pleasing their audience, Kurtis Blow: Rap-sody in Blow, Mandela's Day — The Journey To Freedom, Glen Campbell: "I could have gone the same way as Elvis" and Goodie Mob: World Party

Born and raised in New York City, Cey Adams emerged from the vibrant graffiti scene of the 1970s while still in his teens, tagging “Cey City” on subway cars and painting murals — and was one of the first wave of street artists to obtain gallery representation. He met the Beastie Boys before they were the Beastie Boys, and designed their first logo, t-shirts and singles. He linked up with Russell Simmons at RUSH Artist Management where he designed logos and merch for an artist roster that included Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow, Whodini. When Simmons and Rick Rubin launched a little label called Def Jam Records he joined on as creative director. If there's an album from hip-hop's golden era that you love, it probably has Adams' fingerprints all over it. We discuss his career from its earliest days to today,  which also includes work with iconic brands and fine art and collage.   Brooklyn news and views you can use: bkmag.com Email: hello@bkmag.com Follow along on Facebook: Brooklyn Magazine Twitter: @brooklynmag Instagram: @brooklynmagazine Follow Brian Braiker on Twitter: @slarkpope

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

"Krush Groove" is the sort of '80s oddity that can't quite be categorized. Is it a musical? A comedy? A collection of music videos with dialogue sprinkled in between? This time capsule captured rap's infancy and changed the way Big D speaks. This week's episode, commissioned by listener David B., gave us a newfound respect for Run-DMC, The Fat Boys and, oddly enough, "Purple Rain." Dick Ebert learned why Kurtis Blow is called Kurtis Blow; Ash revealed the depth of her hip-hop knowledge; and Gene explained why he thinks rappers are naturally good actors.
