"GPYR" I'm admittedly a bit fixated on a 16 year old Josh Joplin getting in the van and driving away from his family, his friends and high school in order to blaze his own musical trail out there in the American wild, but I think I'm mostly fixated on that for both its ambition and its bravery. For starters, it's cool that Josh had the belief the world would find him--and it did. But to know that or believe that at 16 is remarkable--when I was 16 I was staying up late watching Letterman and making mix tapes for girls and had no ambition that would get me in a van by myself and head down the highway peddling my wares. But Josh Joplin did. And we talk about that a great deal because I'm in awe of him doing something most 16 year olds couldn't have done. All these years later, the DC born Joplin has almost fifteen albums under his belt, and each one further proves his uncanny genius. From his first album A Present For Hitler--which is maybe one of the best debut album titles ever--to his new one GPYR, Joplin has demonstrated he's a songwriter of tremendous poeticism and unreasonable melodic smarts. I'll get to GPYR in a second--but before I do, let me give you a few biographical bits; he's toured all over the U.S. as well as Europe and Australia, been on Conan and Letterman, had his albums produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads and the Modern Lovers, had his music appear in shows like Scrubs, Dawsons Creek, Party of Five and Roswell, was neighbors with Dan Zanes of the Del Fuegos, he's put out several fabulous albums with Garrison Starr under the name Among The Oak And Ash and In 2015, Joplin founded the award-winning film production company NarrowMoat. Reuniting with his trusty pals in the Josh Joplin Group, GPYR finds Joplin sounding better than ever. Bringing to mind Reckoning-era R.E.M. and the later work of Tommy Keene, GPYR is a thoughtful blend of jangling indie rock and stirring folk both of which are augmented by sweeping musical architecture that heightens the emotional quality of this powerful, dramatic and altogether thrilling album. www.joshjoplingroup.com (http://www.joshjoplingroup.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooksonline.com Instagram + Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Grammy Award-winner Dan Zanes is a unique force in American music, blending sea shanties, early rock 'n' roll, folk, and soul into a sound that resonates with kids and adults alike. For over 20 years, he has toured the world with his band, Dan Zanes and Friends, sharing a joyful, handmade mix of social music. His critically-acclaimed work has appeared on Sesame Street, Playhouse Disney, and Nickelodeon, and he's collaborated with artists like Philip Glass, Lou Reed, and Natalie Merchant. Zanes' musical journey began in the 1980s with The Del Fuegos, but after becoming a father in the 1990s, he pivoted to creating music for families, releasing the hit album Rocket Ship Beach. With his wife, Claudia Zanes, he has also pioneered sensory-friendly performances, and together they've created the beloved Dan Zanes House Partysongbook. Zanes is also an advocate for anti-racism and co-founded a group focused on white anti-racist dialogue.MusicThe Del Fuegos "I Always Call Her Back"Dan Zanes and Friends "All Around The Kitchen"Produced and Hosted by Steev Riccardo

Dan Zanes enjoyed a good run with the Boston band the Del Fuegos but had no idea what broader, more enthusiastic audiences awaited him when he began making “family music” with friends such as Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega. The Dan Zanes and Friends albums and concerts got fans young and old dancing and singing along—and earned him a Grammy Award. Now he and his wife, Claudia Zanes, have a new album, Pieces of Home (out Aug. 30), as the couple continues expanding its reach through sensory-friendly performances and events for various communities. Zanes talks about the Del Fuegos' rise and fall, how his younger brother Warren joined, why they did that beer commercial and how, once he discovered family music, there was no turning back. Claudia Zanes also comes on to tell her part of the story—in perfect harmony, of course. (Photo by Schaun Champion.)

Ever wonder about the meaning of life? In this episode, Andy and Patrick explore this very question from a truly unique and emotional perspective that is certain to encourage you to reexamine your own thoughts on the matter. Patrick shares his power list of 5 things he believes every human is searching for.Patrick's list is not a cliched list based on formal scientific research. Instead, it's based on his personal journey that began as an “unsupervised” child in Brooklyn, New York, in the early 60s and is still ongoing at 60 years of age, shaping him into the luminary he is today. Patrick's list is based on hard-earned life lessons as a homeless alcoholic at his lowest point to his soaring success of becoming a recording artist with the likes of Sade, Chuck D (Public Enemy) and Dan Zanes with many other stops in between. With 23 years of sobriety behind him, Patrick puts his philosophy of life on full display through one very poignant story of having his bicycle stolen in this episode. You get the full range of his process in this one story.  You see that he experiences the full range of human emotion but ultimately returns to his place of equilibrium due to the embeddedness of his own personal philosophy. He has the same initial response that any of the rest of us would have upon learning that something had been taken from us. That we have been violated or disrespected. However, he processes that experience, sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously and returns back to his place of gratitude to get back on track. A key thread throughout Patrick's story, whether in childhood or adulthood, is the idea of the inner voice or critic. This voice often tells us we aren't good enough, nobody loves us, or we can't overcome this. And in many cases, we accept it at face value. However, Patrick's response is to take it under advisement and consciously make his own decision. Patrick shows us that we do not have to accept the inner critic's assessment. He also makes the point that “the mind is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master.” He believes we have much to unlearn from what the inner critic has convinced us over time. The beauty is that we can!Today, Patrick has many roles: philosopher, musician, artist, author, and grandfather, to name a few. However, after this interview, I would like to recognize one more role for him. He is a “spiritual being having a human experience.” His understanding of the human condition is uncanny and is derived from the full range of experiences he has hadthroughout his journey with people from all walks of life. He has taken that lifetime of experience and formulated an incredibly resilient and awe-inspiring perspective that works for him. After listening to this podcast, I hope it works for you as well. For additional insight into Patrick's life, check out the inspiring video featuring him and produced by Green Renaissance (now called Reflections of Life) entitled Am I Worthy? After only a couple of weeks of availability, it has racked up more than 55,000 views and is generating an enormous amount of buzz with more almost 1,400 comments -- a true testament to the power of Patrick's message. We met Dan Zanes as the singer of The Del Fuegos in the first generation of America's indie underground in the mid-1980s. As he explains in our conversation, he discovered after the band broke up that people were more interested in a cassette he made of family-oriented folk he made with his daughter, her friends and their parents in mind than they were in his solo album. That set his course, and he has been working in the family-friendly field for more than 20 years now.  We talk about family-friendly music, folk music, and how his Christmas album, Christmas in Concord, fits in to that musical world. His wife and musical collaborator Claudia is part of the conversation as well, even though she wasn't with him on Christmas in Concord. She is on their new album, the social justice-oriented Let Love Be Your Guide. This episode also inaugurates a change as singer and friend Alexandra Scott joins to talk about Christmas music with Alex, this week focusing on Kelly Clarkson's new "Christmas Isn't Cancelled (Just You)" and her biggest Christmas song to date, "Underneath the Tree." Timestorm is an audio drama about two twins Alexa and Benny Ventura, who are yanked into another dimension by their cousin who gives them this crazy mission: to travel through time to preserve their culture's true history. Throughout the the series, they visit three different continents across the span of five centuries. And they're meeting people who have left their mark on Puerto Rican history. 2:32 INFLUENCES So a big influence on the theme song was the theme song for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Every time I watched Buffy, and I heard that theme song, man, I was ready to watch the show. And I think that's what I wanted to create with this theme song was this this energy and excitement about getting into the world of times. My next big inspiration was Saturday morning cartoons and cartoons in general. The creativity and imagination of Fraggle Rock, that theme song has always struck a chord in my heart. The Smurfs were another one. You can tell I'm 80s, 90s kid. Saturday morning cartoons really tapped into my kid imagination and inspiration. They didn't speak down to the kids. We wanted something that felt like you were talking to the kids. And also hopefully engaging the parents because you know the parents are listening to this too. So we want to share it. They're having a good time. Dan Zanes is a performer of kids' music. And I watched when Dan Zanes was performing, the kids were jumping around and having a good time, and the parents were jumping around and having a good time! And I always think about that energy when I'm creating music for this age group, which is tweens, typically. 4:44 THE HOTEL Timestorm is created by me and my partner in crime, Dania Ramos. Dani and I decided that we were going to take a weekend and hole ourselves up in this inn and write the theme song. "We're going we're getting out of our comfort zone and just going somewhere and and we're gonna create this." So we traveled four and a half hours north, in our in our little four cylinder car. It was the middle of February, and it was frickin cold. And if you know Vermont, it's cold! Bumpy roads, it was crazy. We got there. We were the only ones The only other ones in this inn, so it was the innkeeper and us. And because it was so empty, he upgraded our room to this really wonderful suite with this fireplace. I went into the other bedroom, closed the door. And this is what I started on guitar. This whole theme song started on guitar. Dania gave me some lyrics that she had written. And I went to work on trying to compose the song. I wanted it to be energetic, so I kept it to two three chords and finally got it to a point where I came outside of the bedroom, opened the door. And, and I was like, Okay, I think I've got something and I played it for her. And, and she was like, and this happened a bunch of times. So like I would just come out, work on some things. She gave me some notes. I we'd hash it out. I go back into the bedroom, close the door, worked on it some more and came out and it was just a lot of fun. And by the end of Saturday, we had the the first version ready to go. And we had another day so we just kind of enjoyed the last day in Vermont without having to do anything else. It was great. 7:50 INSTRUMENTS I enjoy rhythm so I knew that it was going to be very rhythmic and different drums, some electronic some actual drums, combining MIDI with actual sounding instruments. And then I went to the low end, finding a plugin of synthesizer that I really enjoyed. Very fluid and very wavy. And I got obsessed with a theremin when a friend of mine created what he called a "Theremin Devil's Phone". And he would use it at his gigs and it was really cool. It was this red phone. And it was it was a theremin so he would just play it. Added the theremin in there. I was the person who sang and rapped on the track, preparing the listener to re enter the world every time and just reminding them that the core focus of this this show is to witness find and remember history. History being the important treasure touchstone of the whole thing. 13:12 SLOW IT DOWN So yeah, so I think a big challenge for me was lyrically, making sure that a can sing and rap it and be the listener can understand some of these these kids that were listening to it when we were prototyping it, were like we just can't understand everything. So we paired it back and being able to make that clear, make those lyrics clear and understandable were really important when creating this theme song. As I was beginning to pull out words, I was like, oh, wow, it's so much easier now to sing and rap over! 14:04 VIOLIN We had brought in this amazing violinist Aurora Mendez to come in and record some violin parts that were featured in the episode. And she came into the studio and did an amazing job in adding her touch to it. 14:39 TRANSITIONS What I really enjoy doing is creating these short musical transitions. So I'll use natural sounds like for a play like they were outside and they were by a playground. I included basketball dribbling as a drumbeat. You know what I mean? It's it was just so much fun to be able to create music that way. Here are a couple of the transitions. We're gonna play them back-to-back. 15:15 ANNOYING DRUMMING I think I drive my wife Dania nuts. Sometimes when I when I find things with like tones or specific overtones to them, I'll like begin to drum or hit on them because I'm very rhythmically oriented. So I'll just be like, Can we please stop drumming on the microwave, or whatever it is, you know what I mean? It's here, here's the spouses that put up with our ridiculousness. 16:14 OUTRO That's about it for this week's episode. We'll listen to the full track in just a moment. Musician Dan Zanes calls what he does "family music" or "all-ages music," not "children's music," because he really is playing for everybody. In talking with him, I learned about how he really sees his music and the way he plays as part of an effort toward social justice. We also talked about his new wife (they just got married in January!) and his Grammy award, and he turned me on to some super cool Haitian music.

Dan Zanes has long been one of the biggest names in the still-exploding genre of so-called "kindie-rock" — music made especially for kids. As the leader of the Grammy-winning Dan Zanes and Friends, he’s made over a dozen hugely popular and acclaimed albums and played concerts for adoring audiences all over the world. And Bill Sherman has not only won a Tony, a Grammy and an Emmmy, he's the music director of the iconic children's show Sesame Street. As a songwriter and orchestrator, he's responsible for the music you hear on the show, and works with the many musicians who drop in and sing: stars like Janelle Monae, Ed Sheeran and Will-I-Am, and many others. But perhaps more impressively, Sherman is one of the driving forces behind such magnum opuses as "Glory of Cookies," "Grover Can Do It All" and "Guacamole: the Musical." In the mid to late ‘80s, Zanes led the scrappy and beloved New England roots-rock band the Del Fuegos. Here, Zanes talks about how he went from playing in a rock band that, as Spinal Tap keyboardist Viv Savage once put it, had a good time all the time to making wholesome music for kids, and how it helped him rediscover what he loved about making music in the first place. Sherman discusses how Sesame Street music is made — with a lot of care, for starters — and what it's like to work with the many stars who drop by the show… and lots of other stuff you've probably wondered about music at Sesame Street. So these guys certainly had a lot of interesting things to say about making music for children, but they also had a lot of interesting things to say about making any kind of music. Like, why — and how — do you make music in the first place? A note to parents: while the music these guys make is rated G, some of the language here is definitely PG.

#11 ATN Interview with PR Extraordinaire Eric Alper

Some time ago I interviewed publicist extraordinaire Eric Alper. Although this was originally intended as a written interview, Eric has so much information to share and has such a great way of delivering it, I felt it had to be released as a podcast! A publicist is not going to make a band "sound" better but they can certainly make sure a band is heard in all the right places by all the right people. Eric has such a lot of experience with so many amazing clients, learning from his success is going to help with your own PR campaigns. Aaron Bethune Here is a little about Eric in his own words: "I am not used to routine, which is how I like it. As a weasel, a flack, an officer to the press, a director, a dictator, a Coke and Chips for breakfast, and dinner for lunch kind of guy, I think I can be forgiven, by 10:00am, if I have felt I had too much to dream last night. I am one of the lucky ones for sure – getting to do during the days (and nights and weekends) what I love to do for eOne Music Canada: Be around passionate music lovers, fans, music industry folks (yeah, we’re still here!) talking about the newest album, the old record recently found in the basement or bargain bin, tragedy-tainted tales, and memories of old C-30, C-60, C-90s in our pockets. So, onto this bio… If I can borrow from Dylan, “I found myself writing this story, this long piece of vomit, about 20 pages long.” He was talking about Like A Rolling Stone, mind you. Battling against the over-exposed and the under-talented, I have handled the PR for Bob Geldof, Ringo Starr, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow, Randy Bachman, Sasha and Digweed, Sinead O’Connor, Steve Miller, The Smashing Pumpkins, Little Big Town, The Black Angels, Natalie MacMaster, DJ Khaled, Curt Smith, Dr. John, Dwight Yoakam, Fred Eaglesmith, Harry Shearer, Dan Zanes, Opeth, Cradle Of Filth, Jordan Knight, Chickenfoot, Bush, Jeff Dunham, A-Trak, Judy Collins, Supersuckers, Joan Baez, Slash, Andy Kim, Pete Seeger, Joan Armatrading, Amy Ray, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Snoop Dogg, Honeymoon Suite, Robert Munsch, Jeff Martin, J. Dilla, The Wiggles, Bill Wyman, Sly and Robbie, Frank Black, Steve Earle, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mick Fleetwood, The Prodigy, Madlib, Deborah Cox, In Flames, Ray J, Mastodon, Kim Mitchell, Jim Jones, Charlatans UK and many more. I’ll let others talk about me now, while keeping my opinionated mouth shut." Eric Alper http://www.thatericalper.com http://www.playitloudmusic.com
