Directed by Boaz Yakin, this powerful film stars Denzel Washington (Training Day, Glory) as Coach Herman Boone, who leads a newly integrated high school football team in 1971 Virginia. Joining him are Will Patton (Armageddon) as Coach Bill Yoast, Wood Harris (The Wire) as Julius Campbell, Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as Gerry Bertier, Donald Faison (Scrubs) as Petey Jones, Ryan Gosling (Barbie & La La Land) and Hayden Panettiere (Heroes) as Sheryl Yoast. Greg and Aaron react to the film's most memorable and emotional scenes, including the "Strong Side, Left Side" moment, the inspirational locker room speech, and the heart-wrenching hospital scene. They also discuss the film's timeless themes of unity, overcoming prejudice, and teamwork. Whether you're reliving this classic or experiencing it for the first time, this reaction is full of insight, laughs, and heartfelt moments. The movie also features an incredible soundtrack with hits like Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum, Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye by Steam, Peace Train by Cat Stevens, Up Around the Bend by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and more. Today, Jess, Les, and Amy discuss the two-day peace summit in Switzerland dedicated to forging an end to the war in Ukraine with over 90 countries attending, including Vice President Kamala Harris on behalf of the U.S. The summit concluded with a communique reaffirming Ukraine's territorial integrity, among other things. Notably absent from the summit were Russia and China. Of those who did attend, several countries including India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates did not sign the communique.Without Russia's participation, does this summit mean anything? Are there implications of countries not re-affirming core principles, like sovereignty, for the international system? What does this summit and its communique mean for further aid to Ukraine?Check out the answers to these questions and more in this episode of Fault Lines.Check out the sources that helped shape our expert's discussion!https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/16/europe/ukraine-peace-summit-switzerland-intl/index.html https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-russia-switzerland-war-conference-burgenstock-568cafee5fbe9c3b19b79b041583a5d6 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/swiss-conference-ukraine-rcna157400 Follow our experts on Twitter: @lestermunson@amykmitchell@NotTVJessJonesLike what we're doing here? Riding FDR into a brand New Year with a Happy Nude Rear, Capt'n Max & I resolve to “Go Bonobos in 2024,” but our Peace Train turns into a Bullet Train in the Tunnel of Love, as we dodge the bullets & wily booby traps, finally coming out of the tunnel to Make Love Not War in 2024. Perhaps our bumpy ride portends a rough year ahead. Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & S3xuality!  Even before we start, I hesitate to hop aboard, being a little under the weather, plus we're short-staffed, still holidazed & shell shocked by the war p0rrn from Gaza under Zionist bombardment with U.S. bombs. But we have surprise in-studio guests, 7x “Most Bonobo Couple” SUZY Awards winners Daniele Watts, aka DaLove, & Chef BeLive, aka BeLove, stars of our Bonoboville Reunion on VICE TV (now 300,000+ views!) & much more. So, we gather ‘round the Speakeasy bar speaking about the “unspeakable” with gracious-as-always BeLove & da-light-ful DaLove slipping into her usual position of contrarian (maybe a bit more contrary than usual), calling Bonoboville a “family” though we prefer “community” - which has less baggage, but DaLove is determined to “unpack a little of that” with poetic flair - flinging baggage throughout the Train, almost pulling down the luggage rack! Braving the turbulence, we pick up p0rrn star Hamilton Steele, with tales of F*cking Da Rich HotWives of Cuckold Millionaires, & Christopher C. Gagliardi, 9x SUZY Award winner of “Most Bonobo Graduate,” resolving to be a “voice for change” for the "autistic spectrum community" & to spread humanism in 2024. We also explore the joys of amputee sex prompting a Callin'er to say, “my penis cannot compete with a leg stump.” Putting the brakes on one of DaLove's attemps at derailment, I flog her half-HappyNudeRear & BeLove spanks it. We love awe-some BeLove & DaLove, but we don't buy DaLove's actorly “radical empathy” for narcissists like Trumpty Dumpty & war criminals like Netanyahu. We don't want to empathize with Benny Net Nut! We're also out of time - just as DaLove has more to say - but I sign off with a plea for the world (including ourselves) to Go Bonobos in 2024 & Make Kink Not War. Want more? We are featuring Who by Fire from Bad Sisters, done by PJ Harvey & Tim Phillips. Our Deuces this week has one of my very favorite tunes of all times ... Peace Train, done originally by Cat Stevens and covered beautifully by Leem Lubany in the movie Rock the Kasbah. We have the Raconteurs, Apples in stereo, Sheryl Crow, the Beatles, Richard Marx in from out of the Rock 'n Roll Graffiti radio playing only disc number seven Labauve collection, Greenfield done by the Brothers Four and a very special appearance by Elvis Presley and the animals.  We are still basking in the glow from the tremendous #ISS2023 show in Las Vegas and can't thank Terry and the rest of the gang at TPP, ClaimsPros, and #ISS enough for all their hard work for putting on a tremendous show for the first time at the Caesars Forum. Congratulations to our friends from Atomic Self Storage, as they are working on their own executive RV facility.   [note the recording date as March 7, 2022]  We want to thank people for their donations to and kind words for the people of Ukraine. The response has been heartening and the personal stories some of you included were touching. Over 1.5 million people have left Ukraine so far,, ~5% of the population. A loyal listener from Canada pointed out that there are more Ukrainians in Canada than USA  =1.4M v 1M in US. Canada has opened its borders for the ukrainian refugees. The US has yet to do this but has extended the visas for Ukrainians in the US. Heard from a Russian listener who said the Russian people are"scared shitless." They  don't know what news to believe, so much propaganda  He's an IT guy so pretty savvy.  Here's a quote from one of his letters:Anyway, if I'm going to be arrested, for me it's a way to a free world, as a fugitive of some sort. Your support, support from people of the world -- that's important, thank you. Rosie from Scotland sent me a video of Peace Train, the Cat Stevens song, sung by an international collection of singers. Very nice, seems like something we need.Rosie also sent us two of her poetic interpretations  whereby she would watch short silent  video clips created by another artist and create audiovisual poetry. Here's a  a link to the website. One is titled BLUE and the other is Infinitude.  Spend two minutes of your time with these.OK, we need to destress a bit. Whudda thunk Del's trip to the dentist would be a destressor? The Bucks share this gratis. That means this is an unpaid testimonial.Del relate a psychological test he thinks he passed with flying colors. Don't ask the dog.Del and Dave start new books. That's all we know so far. Dave sold a bike ….. Parted with his beloved Co-Motion touring bike. Here's to middle-aged buckRandy., the new owner. Interesting aside-his partner, whom he characterized as the love of his life,  grew up mostly in Ulm, Germany-about 30 miles from where Dave's wife lived. Her family had fled Romania during the  Ceacescu regime; a theme being duplicated by millions today. You can still donate money to Ukrainian refugee support. Very inspirational for these dark times we are living in, where TRUCK DRIVERS are acting like fascists by asking for FREE-DUMB!!! Also, Cat Stevens is threatening to pull his music from Spotify UNLESS the following demands are met: (1) everyone converts to Islam (religion of peace); (2) we ban pork; (3) we force ALL WOMEN to wear the freedom hijab for female empowerment; and (4) EVERY PA system in the world broadcasts the Call to Prayer at the proper times of day. I think we should do what he says! I cannot live without hearing "Peace Train" at least three times each day on my Spotify playlist. 1971 - December: Led Zeppelin "IV"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 20, 2021 43:16

A case could be made that Led Zeppelin IV is the biggest heavy metal album of all time.  However, "IV" isn't really the name of the album.  The actual title was four symbols, one selected by each band member.  The record company hated the idea for obvious reasons, but what they thought was "professional suicide" turned out to be the best selling album for the band and one of the top rated Rock albums of all time. The rollout of Led Zeppelin IV without a pronounceable title and without written information on the album sleeve was a reaction to their experience with the previous album.  Led Zeppelin III had been highly anticipated and a commercial success, but received several negative reviews from critics.  This response affected the band, particularly Jimmy Page.  Led Zeppelin stopped touring and returned to Headley Grange in Hampshire, England for recording the new material.  The relaxed environment of the country house was good for removing distractions and encouraging spontaneity. The result was both a commercial and critical success, and a defining album for heavy metal throughout the 70's.  Every track on this album would be played on AOR and hard rock radio stations.Folks, this is an album you need to hear in its entirety. Rock and RollThe second track on the album is now a rock and roll standard.  It came out of a jam session the band had while producing the album.  John Bonham started with a drum introduction from "Keep A-Knockin'" by Little Richard.  Jimmy Page adds a guitar riff inspired by Chuck Berry.  Ian Stewart, pianist for the Rolling Stones, joins on the song.  It is one of the few songs for which all four band members got writing credits.Four SticksA song for which the name doesn't match the lyrics, "Four Sticks" is so named because John Bonham used two sets of drumsticks - two sticks in each hand - while recording the song.  He recorded only two takes, and Jimmy Page said that "it was physically impossible for him to do another."Black DogAnother song for which the name doesn't appear in the lyrics, "Black Dog" received its name from a black Labrador retriever found wandering around Headley Grange mansion while they were recording.  The alternate a cappella vocals and start and stop instrumentation was inspired by Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well."Stairway to HeavenThis instantly recognizable epic is Led Zeppelin's signature song.  The band was setting out to create an epic when they wrote it, as they wanted a song to replace "Dazed and Confused" as the centerpiece of their concerts.  Amazingly, it did not chart because it was never released as a single.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture Diamonds Are ForeverBond...James Bond!  This Bond film was the last one with Sean Connery as James Bond before being replaced by Roger Moore. STAFF PICKS:Hallelujah by SweathogWayne leads off the staff picks a Christian rock crossover, similar to "Jesus Christ, Superstar" and "Godspell."  Sweathog was a band out of San Francisco which became a top opening act for groups like Black Sabbath, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Grand Funk Railroad.   Day After Day by BadfingerBrian's staff pick sounds like the Beatles, perhaps because George Harrison produced this album, and participates on guitar and backing vocals.  It tells the story of a boy daydreaming about a girl "looking out from my lonely room, day after day."Never Been to Spain by Three Dog NightRob's staff pick from Three Dog Night features Cory Wells on lead vocal duties.  Three Dog Night had three singers who would trade off on providing lead vocals.  This song was penned by folks singer-songwriter Hoyt Axton, and discusses places the singer has never been, but compares spots that might be good proxies for these locations.Peace Train by Cat StevensBruce finishes the staff picks with Cat Stevens' first top 10 hit in the U.S.  After converting to Islam and changing his name from Cat Stevens to Yusuf Islam, he performed the song as a call for a peaceful solution to the Iraq War, as well as playing it at the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize concert when Muhammad Yunus received the award for his work in micro-lending to the poor. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Scorpio by Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar BandA funky instrumental from the film "Scorpio" takes us out of this podcast.  The song was on the charts this month, though the movie would not appear until 1973.

Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality Why are so many of us violent and confused? Why don't we follow The Bonobo Way of peace through pleasure? Why do we stay shackled like the Hebrew slaves in Egypt to this Pyramid Scheme we call "capitalism"? One root of the evil that runs deep in the history of human “civilization” is religious sexual abuse—from the Evangelical “purity” cult-complicit “Massage Parlor Massacre” to the first little “baby lie” told to me at the age of five, in the center of a big 100-family Passover seder. Usually, I celebrate the “Pesach” with a kinky seder and scallion-flogging orgy, but we're still in the midst of crossing the “Red Sea” of the Coronapocalypse, and nothing is “as usual.” Though our erotic, exotic and very kinky “Sexy Seder” 2016 is our post-show throwback for another stimulating ride on F.D.R., featuring Capt'n Max, Mariah, Unscene Abe and I talking about freedom, restraint and religious abuse; ammosexual overkill (literally); despicable anti-Asian thuggery; scams (April Fool's! We have your nudes!): that hot Lil Nas X lap dance with Satan in “Call Me By Your Name”; Charlton Heston as Moses parting that Red Sea; racist sexist Georgia juxtapositions; #GoBonobos for Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby for defacto decriminalizing sex work and drug use; why we need to F*ck Da Rich with a nice BiG “wealth tax,” plus more sapiosexual insights and eargasms for all… And yes, I tell a few sexy, funny Passover tales, including the true story of Elijah and the little lie of the (not really) missing Manischewitz that evolved into the Big Lie of religious abuse that turned Me into an authority-questioning sexologist specializing in working with victims of religious abuse. SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Remember Lilith Fair? Remember how it was the “first” time that women in rock were famous and getting respect, and how that would change everything? That attitude pretty much summed up all of the 1990s. I still have huge nostalgia for that decade, and I do believe lots of important issues were brought to the forefront in every field. I'm not even going to knock the fact that there was actual progress being made. But as with all growth, what we thought of as the be all end all of revolutions pales in comparison to the strides that were made after. And what we forget is that there were significant growth steps even before certain issues gained more popularity. The whole point of this tangent is to remind you that there were women in rock doing sensitive music before the 1990s – ummm Joni Mitchell & Carole King anyone??? – and that even in the big flashy 1980s, there were plenty of women holding their own with the Springsteens & Princes & U2s. I've always followed women in music. I respected Patti Smith & Stevie Nicks, liked Pat Benatar & Joan Jett & Chrissie Hynde, loved the Bangles and the Go-Go's, and had a secret thing for Siouxsie Sioux. And don't even get me started on the Riot Grrrl scene in the 1990s, or Hole or the Breeders. For the late 1980s, though, my two go-to women were Edie Brickell and Natalie Merchant. At some point, everyone needs antidotes to what they normally listen to. It keeps the ears & brain fresh. To counter all the reverb-y bombast of the late 1980s, I chose among others 10,000 Maniacs. This here album was their first to gain widespread recognition – mainly for the songs “What's the Matter Here?”, “Like the Weather”, and the Cat Stevens cover “Peace Train”. The main showcase of course was Natalie – for her vocals, her songwriting, and her ability to choose & own cover tunes. They're the strengths that would carry the Maniacs to even bigger success in the early 1990s, and Natalie Merchant to EVEN BIGGERER success in the mid-late 1990s. There are a bunch of mellow songs of mine that take a page from all this sensitive, laid back stuff. You can hear it most prominently on my mid 1990s home EP, Black-Eyed Susan – especially the title song and the opening track “Higher Ground Again”. Here's a link to the whole thing: Black-Eyed Susan (EP) - https://soundcloud.com/recarea/sets/black-eyed-susan I remember liking most of the album, and playing it frequently on my dorm room turntable. I'd say my favorite is probably “Like the Weather”. Who are some of your favorite women in rock, from any era? On this second Sunday of Advent, Peter brings a few Scripture passages that speak of a Child that will bring peace to the world. Peter sees this as having to do with the gradual growth of justice that is bringing peace to more and more people through the gift of Jesus' life death and resurrection, and he also sees it as the gift of God to our troubled souls in the midst of whatever is going on as we face the storms of life.  After listening to the talk, we suggest clicking on these links to take in Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) doing Peace Train and Stevie Wonder performing Heaven Help Us. Folk music owes its mainstream success to a few people, with one of the trailblazers being a singer-songwriter that has changed his name a few times. Let’s take a deep dive into the musical world of Cat Stevens… His real name is a bit longer and more interesting, Steven Demetre Georgiou. In 1977, he changed his name yet again to Yusuf Islam when he became a Muslim. In 1979, he auctioned off his guitars and gave the money to charity in an effort to show his devotion to Islam He tells Uncut magazine that his girlfriend at the time helped him pick his most famous stage name: Cat Stevens. “Christine said to me one day ‘you look so much like a cat.’ That kind of stuck.” In 1968, Stevens contracted Tuberculosis. After a long recovery, he started writing more introspective songs that lead him to his signature folk sound and message. "I was smoking a lot,” he tells Mojo Magazine. “Dope as well but mostly cigarettes. So then along came this disease and I was stuck with it. It was a kind of godsend in a way for me. That period was my blossoming into who I wanted to be." The late 60s and early 70s were Stevens’ heyday, hitting success with songs like Father and Son, Wild World, Moonshadow, Peace Train, and Morning Has Broken Not only can he sing and write, he can paint as well. His artwork graces the front of three of his albums In 2001, he released a boxed set containing 79 tracks, most of which he recorded before becoming a Muslim. He donated the proceeds to charity in light of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America Yusuf continues to perform today, mostly without any interest in commercial success, but instead for enlightenment and to assist his religion. 10,000 Maniacs special with Steve Gustafson talking about life in music, recording, the creative process & much much more The band was formed as Still Life in 1981 in Jamestown, New York, by Dennis Drew (keyboards), Steven Gustafson (bass), Chet Cardinale (drums), Robert Buck (guitar and Newhouse's ex-husband) and Teri Newhouse (vocalist and Buck's ex-wife). Gustafson invited Natalie Merchant, who was 17 at the time, to do some vocals. John Lombardo, who was in a band called The Mills (along with brother guitarist/vocalists Mark Liuzzo and Paul Liuzzo and drummer Mike Young) and used to play occasionally with Still Life, was invited to join permanently on guitar and vocals. Newhouse and Cardinale left the band in July, and Merchant became the main singer. Various drummers came and left. The band changed its name to Burn Victims and then to 10,000 Maniacs after the low-budget horror movie Two Thousand Maniacs!. They performed as 10,000 Maniacs for the first time on Labor Day, September 7, 1981, with a line-up of Merchant, Lombardo, Buck, Drew, Gustafson, and Tim Edborg on drums. Edborg left and Bob "Bob O Matic" Wachter was on drums for most of the 1981 gigs. Tired of playing cover songs—though their first notable American hit was a cover of the Cat Stevens hit "Peace Train"—the band started to write their own music, usually with Merchant handling the lyrics and Lombardo the music. In March 1982, with Jim Foti on drums, the band recorded an EP album called Human Conflict Number Five. More gigs followed in 1982. During this time they lived in Atlanta, Georgia for a short while at the encouragement of friends who said that many gigs were available there. Discouraged by the lack of actual gigs, and by having to sell plasma and rake leaves to buy food, the band moved back to Jamestown in November 1982 to regroup. At the beginning of 1983, Jerry Augustyniak joined the band as their permanent drummer. The Maniacs met Augustyniak when they played in Buffalo, New York, where he was in a punk band called The Stains. Between March and July, the band recorded songs for a second record, Secrets of the I Ching, their debut full-length album, which was pressed by Mark Records for the band's own label Christian Burial Music. The record was well received by critics and caught the attention of respected BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel in London. One song, "My Mother the War", turned out to be a minor hit in the United Kingdom, and entered the independent singles chart. The band toured extensively during 1983 and 1984, and played gigs in the UK. Peter Leak, an Englishman living in New York City, became interested in the band, made contact and was made their manager. With the help of Leak and Elektra Records A & R man Howard Thompson, 10,000 Maniacs signed to Elektra in November 1984. In the spring of 1985, they recorded their second full-length album, The Wishing Chair, in London at Livingston Studios, with Joe Boyd as producer. Though the album was not a blockbuster hit, its status as the band's major label debut did win it some notice, and it received significant critical acclaim. Co-founder Lombardo left 10,000 Maniacs during a rehearsal on July 14, 1986. The remaining five members started recording a new album in Los Angeles with Peter Asher as the producer. In My Tribe, a more pop-rock oriented record, was released on July 7, 1987. The album stayed on the charts for 77 weeks, peaking at No. 37, and established a large U.S. audience for the group. It was also well received in the UK. The album originally contained "Peace Train". It was removed from subsequent pressings after Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) made comments implying he agreed with a death Fatwa against author Salman Rushdie. 10,000 Maniacs' next album, 1989's Blind Man's Zoo, hit No. 13 and went gold, further increasing the group's following. In May 1989, the British music magazine NME reported that 10,000 Maniacs had won the songwriter category prize at the New York Music Awards. In 1990, with the help of Lombardo, they remastered their first two records, Human Conflict Number Five and Secrets of the I Ching, and released them as a compilation called Hope Chest: The Fredonia Recordings 1982-1983. Lombardo and Mary Ramsey, who had formed a folk act called John & Mary, opened gigs for the Maniacs on the Hope Chest Tour in 1990. In 1991, during the recordings of a new album, Merchant revealed to the other members that she would be leaving 10,000 Maniacs for a solo career in two years' time. The new album, Our Time in Eden, was released on September 29, 1992. In 1993, the band performed at the MTV Inaugural Ball for President Clinton in January and on MTV Unplugged on April 21. Merchant announced her departure from the band on MTV on August 5, 1993, saying she "didn't want art by committee anymore." The MTV Unplugged album was released on October 26, 1993. "The last 10,000 Maniacs gig was the first time I'd got drunk in nearly two years," Merchant later recalled. "I laughed a lot and threw lots of flowers out of the hotel window."

Sounds Like Liberty

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine Peace Train by Cat Stevens.  Is this our first divided vote on SLL? http://bit.ly/2SrCBeY This week in I Heard This Happened: We have all the feels today with some melodic hardcore and something a little harder to define. Nicky picked self-titled debut Astronoid by Astronoid. I’m calling this rock because I’m honestly not sure what genre it is. It reminds me of pop-punk but is far too atmospheric to wear the label well. Somewhere between Four Year Strong, 30 Seconds To Mars and The Used smothered in Mew. I often say the best advice in music is more reverb and they heeded my advice unknowingly and I’m yet again proven absolutely correct. The album finds a nice pocket where it’s got an assaulting drum beat underneath a soupy wash of vocals and synths with occasional bits of guitar riff peaking out and I find it damn fabulous. https://blood-music.bandcamp.com/album/astronoid Lizzie’s pick is Hindsight by Hometown Losers. She doesn’t know genres, just feelings. This melodic hardcore record reminds her of the angst of her younger years with clever lyrics about death and that’s all she needed to soothe her soul. This EP also happens to have roaring vocals and some solid hooks. https://hometownlosers.bandcamp.com/album/hindsight Alan Mosley is half of the hilarious duo over at Postcards from Somalia and host of The Gold Standard podcast we talk about a myriad of maddening topics.
