In the late '90s, The Flys had us all in a trance with their brooding alt-rock anthem “Got You (Where I Want You),” a song that buzzed through movie trailers, TV shows, and the Disturbing Behavior soundtrack like a late-summer fever dream. But just as quickly as they soared, they crash-landed into the used CD bins of America. This week, we're joined by Rishi Bahl of Eternal Boy and Four Chord Music Festival to investigate what clipped the wings of this Hollywood-born band made up of actual surf royalty. From the hypnotic riff that defined their biggest hit to deep cuts like “She's So Huge” and song titles like “Sexual Sandwich,” we cover it all—plus we dig into the James Marsden cinematic universe and question whether “Got You” might be alt-rock's forgotten gem...or just another fly on the wall.

Simon is an award winning life coach, keynote speaker and author of the best selling book Energize. But he didn't always want to be a coach, actually, he came across it during his time working in the financial sector. His interest deepened and he started to study alongside his full time job. Send us a textIf you've been to UncommonTEEN Live, our conference, you've heard me say these 3 phrases:1.    Dare to be Beautiful2.    Dare to be Confident3.    Dare to Shine (or Lead) But why do I start these phrases with the word “dare?”  The definition of dare is: to have courage, to have strength of mind to undertake anything, to be bold, to not be afraid, to challenge.    love this: to have courage, to be bold, to not be afraid.   The reason I start each of those phrases with dare is because it takes courage, boldness, and faith to truly be beautiful (which we'll talk about more next week).   It takes courage, boldness, and faith to shine your light for Jesus, and it also takes courage, boldness, and faith to be confident in the world we live in, and that's what we are going to talk about today.  This month, as we talk about lessons that we can learn from Esther. She is definitely someone that I think of as someone who had courage; she had boldness and stepped out in faith to change her generation.   When she was presented with a problem, she could have given up and said that there was no hope, but instead, she chose to step out and do something that could have ended in her death.  She was at an impasse. On the one hand, she could die because of a decree made by an evil man named Haman, who was going to wipe out the Jews. Esther was a Jew. However, in order to save the Jews, she had to see the king uninvited, and nobody saw the king uninvited. If they did and he didn't want to see them, they would immediately be put to death.   So, Esther has a choice between death because she's a Jew or death because she is about to go see a king uninvited. If you're new to the Bible or new to the UncommonTEEN podcast, I encourage you to take time to read the book of Esther and then go back and listen to the last two episodes: “God's Got You” and “Step Into Your Purpose.” I know it will bless you!  There is a fight for our lives. We not only see this with Esther…but we have seen this since the beginning of time. Just look at this culture!  There is a fight against your identity.  There is a fight against your friends.   There is a fight against your purpose.  There is a fight against your excitement for God...your walk with God. There is also a fight against your confidence. It is so important to make sure we are walking with God-confidence, NOT Self-Confidence. Ladies, check your emails this week for updates on the New UncommonTEEN App!!To ask your Ask Me Anything Questions or if you need prayer, head on over to UncommonTEEN.com.For the Ask Me Anything Questions, click on the RED BUTTON at the top of the screen. The Subversive Therapist

The set up to Mass Shooter is “I will destroy the world and then kill myself.”  In simple terms, the War game version of Now I've Got You, You SOB! is the climax of Mass Shooter. Both games involve the Othering of a certain person, group, or ethnicity, which creates an obstruction between oneself and the Other. The same can be said for competing nation-states. This Othering justifies violent retaliation. Mass Shooter involves White (“it”) surveilling Black (weakness for the game) in order to find injustices to enact revenge. The relatively minor infraction is weaponized by White to unleash their fury. Black then retaliates against the fury. When Black's inevitable retaliation occurs, it authorizes a claim of “self-defense” even though White was in an offensive position. White was looking for provocations to license a game of Now I've Got You, You Son of a Bitch! (NIGYSOB!) For example, the U.S. militarily occupies the Middle East, which provokes the 9/11 attacks. Two decades later, under the guise of the illusory “war on terror,” (see Hide & Seek) the U.S. enacts revenge on one of the “masterminds” who allegedly planned the attack. Israel occupies the Palestinians to provoke attacks by Hamas in order to seek revenge and domination: NIGYSOB! The Mass Shooter combines NIGYSOB! with the supremacist version of Kick Me. Mass Shooter is driven by White's need to be perceived by Others (Black), i.e., social recognition. White's perception is that Black will regret how they treated White, e.g., for the bullying, criticism, lack of sexual interest. White makes themselves agitated (bound up sexual energy), which leads to violence. The exhibitionism of the murders, which is often livestreamed, is the destructive version of the Influencer game. Consider Columbine. One of the masterminds was Eric Harris who imagined the massacre would one day be made into a Hollywood movie: “For Eric, Columbine was a performance. Homicidal art. He actually referred to his audience in his journal: “the majority of the audience wont even understand my motives,” he complained. He scripted Columbine as made-for-TV murder, and his chief concern was that we would be too stupid to see the point. Fear was Eric's ultimate weapon. He wanted to maximize the terror. He didn't want kids to fear isolated events like a sporting event or a dance; he wanted them to fear their daily lives. It worked. Parents across the country were afraid to send their kids to school.” (p. 277) His existential life position was I'm OK, You're not-OK (arrogant and paranoid). Therefore, Harris felt a sense of superiority over Others and plotted revenge. In the book, “Columbine”, it is noted that “Eric equated “unique” with “superior.” For example, Harris obtains injustices and gets revenge: he would attack his peers' houses “to retaliate for perceived slights, but most often for the offense of inferiority.” (NIGYSOB!). The armaments give White situational power to inflict the most damage: I'll Show Them. White is more interested in the effects the shooting has on their enemies or friends (carnage) than they do in the rewards itself. Contrary to popular understanding, the Columbine massacre was not a nod to 4/20 or Hitler's birthday, but a replication of Timothy McVeigh's work four years (to the day) prior. McVeigh's devastating Oklahoma City bombing of 168 innocent people was revenge, i.e., NIGYSOB!, for the federal government's actions against the Branch Davidian compound in the 1993 Waco siege. According to Michael Parenti in his book The Terrorism Trap, McVeigh was associated with the “Christian Identity” group. So, in addition to attacking the federal government, he was also fascistically attacking “the Jews, liberals, and other secularists who have dislodged white Christian America from its spiritual moorings.” McVeigh is therefore one of the Original Mass-shooter Gangsters (see OMG, e.g., Unabomber). The initial commencement date for the Columbine attack was Apri...

At this year's Super Bowl halftime show, Usher Raymond sang through decades of hits while twirling on roller skates, making a case for himself as one of the great R. & B. artists of our time. The performance illuminates a key aspect of modern pop stardom: the fashioning of one's legacy in real time. In this episode of Critics at Large, the staff writers Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss how musicians' images take shape independent of their music. They consider “Bob Marley: One Love,” a new bio-pic made with the support of the Marley estate that deliberately smooths the rough edges of the singer's life. Today's performers take a more active role in their own reputation management, using high-profile appearances to stake a claim or reinforce their persona. At this year's Grammy Awards, the question of legacy came to the fore when Jay-Z took issue with the fact that his wife, Beyoncé, has never won the coveted Album of the Year award. But the most indelible moments from the ceremony involved songs from decades prior—a reminder that the music itself is often more enduring than any formal accolade. “Rather than legacy in corporate terms or in institutional terms,” says Fry, there's also “the legacy of the heart.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Bob Marley: One Love” (2024)“Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell, as performed at the 2024 Grammys “If I Ain't Got You” by Alicia KeysLuke Combs's cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy ChapmanTwins react to “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins“Walk the Line” (2005)“You Make Me Wanna . . .” by UsherNew episodes drop every Thursday. Super excited to announce new guest, Conrad Fisher, to The Story!Music industry Veteran Matt Lindsey (Mel Tillis, Hal Ketchum) was planning a quiet evening at home when he got a call from his friend, legendary music producer Jim Rooney (John Prine, Nanci Griffith).“He was very insistent that I come down to a show in town,” Lindsey recalls. “He told me he'd found someone he wanted me to hear. He told me he thought this guy had a big future ahead of him. Once again, Rooney was right.”That was the night Lindsey met Conrad Fisher, a young singer / songwriter from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Fisher had come to Nashville to sit in with Rooney and his Irregulars (a stew of acclaimed session guys like Dan Dugmore, Dave Pomeroy along with acclaimed artists like Tim O' Brien, Pat Alger, Shawn Camp and more).“I loved what he did,” says Lindsey. “His music is so natural. I wanted to work with him immediately.”Indeed, FIsher possesses an immediately likable vocal style, is a fine guitar player skills and brought great original songs to the table. Lindsey and his Ashbrook Recordings partner Jeff Gordon (Elizabeth Cook) wanted to get Fisher into the studio as soon as possible. The result is Fisher's new Trouble With A Hammer, a 7–song collection of 5 originals and 2 covers; Tom Petty's “Walls,” and Waylon Jennings' “You Asked Me To.” On his originals, Fisher draws from a deep well of influences like Buck Owens (on the title track), Don Williams (“Old Lonesome Feeling” and “Better Now”), and even The Monkees (“Baby I've Got You”).Fisher provided vocals, keyboard, guitars, harmonic, percussion and kazoo and recorded the project at the famed Nashville recording studio, The Sound Emporium. Other noted musicians joining in were Fred Eltringham (drums, percussion), Russ Pahl (steel guitar/electric guitar), Pete Wasner (piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer), Gideon Klein (bass, fiddle) and Beth Fisher (vocals). The Pennyslvania-born singer and songwriter grew up in a Mennonite household where his dad played Johnny Cash records and where the young Fisher learned to love the harmonies of the church he attended. In 2018 Fisher went to Nashville to seek out his songwriting heroes like Roger Cook (“I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing”), Dickey Lee (“She Thinks I Still Care”), Dallas Frazier (“Elvira”), and Bill Anderson (“Tip of my Fingers”), among others.Still based in Pennsylvania, Fisher is an accomplished carpenter and spends time in his workshop building things for his family and friends. You can find Conrad and his projects here:Website: http://conradfishermusic.comYoutube: http://www.youtube.com/conradfisherFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ConradFisherMusic/Insta: https://www.instagram.com/conradfishermusicFind The Story Podcast here: coryrosenproductions.com/podcastsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

Welcome back to Artbeat Radio!   Today, relax and listen to our re-imagined lyrics and original soundscape. For this first project, the Artbeat Radio class at CECA chose to rewrite Alicia Key's hit song, “If I Ain't Got You” but with a sweet twist. Service users in the class provided input and feedback on their favorite desserts, ultimately deciding the main theme of the song would be, “If I Ain't Got Ice Cream.” Service users wrote the lyrics and decided on the tempo of the song, key, and instrumentation. As you listen to the recording you will hear Jesus Q. open the song with a spelling of the word “ice cream” while Juliet R. joyfully laughs in the background. Maria G. and Michael H. sing loudly through the verses and chorus before the whole class breaks into an instrumental solo section. Maria G., Michael H., and Jesus Q. take turns soloing on the piano, Juliet R. and Jesus Q. hit the drum, and service users in class all take turns playing the shaker. The students then close out the tune with a loud chorus of "yum!"  “Dreaming of Ice Cream”    Some people live for trés leches   Some people live for apple pie   Some people eat dessert for breakfast   like mermelada on French toast    Some people think pizza  Enchiladas and chips  Are the only way to go    And I've had them before  But they just don't compare  To that magical food    Some people want it all  But I don't want nothing at all  If it ain't you, ice cream  If I ain't got you, ice cream  Some people want carrot cake  Some just want everything  But everything means nothing  If I ain't got ice cream    Some people search for a milk shake They like to drink them Some people need three dozen flavors Others just want pink shaved ice  Some people think pizza  Enchiladas and chips  Are the only way to go    And I've had them before  But they just don't compare  To that magical food    Some people want it all  But I don't want nothing at all  If it ain't you, ice cream  If I ain't got you, ice cream  Some people want carrot cake  Some just want everything  But everything means nothing  If I ain't got ice cream    "Oceanic Soundscape" Soundscapes are musical compositions that encompass natural-occurring sounds from specific environments. CECA service users worked collaboratively to create this ocean soundscape featuring percussive and wind instrument recordings combined with environmental sounds to create the breezy and oscillating effects one experiences while visiting the ocean. Instruments such as the ocean drum, native flute, rain stick, and tone blocks were utilized by service users PJ (Lawrence W. III), Kyuta S. , Norberta C., and Jennifer R. to build a soundscape transporting the listener to their ideal beach visit.  Service users explored layering and looping techniques to create desired musical effects contributing to the overarching goal of transporting anyone listening to a peaceful, beach day.   BIO Edited by Johnny G. and Michael H.     Thanks for listening and tune in next time!     Follow us on instagram @artbeatradio   For more information about our organization, please visit our website www.ableartswork.org

This week I'm reading an excerpt from my book, Chapter 5: Not Just Lip Service and discussing the benefits of writing down your goals. So often we can become overwhelmed by all the stuff on our everyday to-do list or that lofty-goal list of things we want to accomplish. The Subversive Therapist
S3, Part 2, Columbine: Imperialism Hits Home

The Subversive Therapist

The 1999 Columbine massacre was televised live for the country to see in real time. Students inside the high school watched their own tragedy on CNN as they searched for answers to what was happening. To watch oneself, by oneself is the hopelessness of American despair. The fuel for this American despair is the reigning ideology of hyper-individualism: constructing an Empire of the Self. This requires the forever updating and remodeling of the self: Me Inc. Both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold had absences of hope: neither had found love and both wrestled with ideas about god and death. Eric's sense of God-like superiority was paired with sadistic nihilism (absence of god), while Dylan's sense of inferiority and depression was one of hopelessness. They could not see themselves or the world as ever changing. They took an absolutist reading of social Darwinian logic to legitimize their actions and it was meant to be televised for the whole world to see. Their despair manifested as powerlessness and agitation. They relinquished any responsibility for their actions and transformed themselves into violence (murder) and incapacitation (suicide) for self-aggrandizement. They were building a sadistic brand and media empire in order to fulfill the Top Gun script (to be the Best of the Best). The scripting was promoted through Games they played: Kick Me, Cops N Robbers, Now I've Got You, You SOB!, I Can't Stand It, etc. In the moment, Columbine was a personalized form of colonialism, Fascism, and imperialism. Harris and Klebold forced a symbiotic relationship with the people of the U.S. in order to dominate space-time (on the airwaves) through an act of revenge. This was performative crime exhibited on TV for the masses in order to instill fear and impotence.  Visit MankatoTherapist.com for more information and to contact Andrew Archer.
