Juneteenth commemorates the 19th day in June, 1865, when Union General Gordon Grainger announced General Order No.3, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas. Celebrations began immediately, but eventually took a back seat to the civil rights movement in the 1960s. With the advent of Black Lives Matter new emphasis has been placed on the holiday, which we celebrate on this week's Magazine. We'll hear music from Reggie Harris, Eric Bibb, Robert Finley, Our Native Daughters, Sweet Honey in the Rock and many more. Tune in for a celebration of Juneteenth … this week on The Sing Out! We're looking at a song that is indisputably a Christmas carol but with a reach that extends to every season – “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” It belongs to a collection of historic Negro Spirituals, which likely started on the slave plantations in the American South and were later picked up in the Civil Rights Movement by activists like Fannie Lou Hamer and later, The Freedom Singers. “Go Tell It on the Mountain” has been performed by a multitude of heavenly singers and we were lucky enough to speak to one such star- Vanessa Williams- about why she chose to feature the carol on her 1996 Christmas album, Star Bright. Maggi Van Dorn, Hark's host, also garnishes rich cultural and theological insight from Catholic liturgical heavyweight, Eric Styles, along with expert music and history lessons from the wildly talented Emorja Roberson, Assistant Professor of Music and African-American Studies at the Oxford College of Emory University. The music featured in this episode is thanks to The OK Factor, Caleb Noeldner, Kendra Logozar, Kim and Reggie Harris, Vanessa Williams, and Universal Music Enterprises. Special thanks to Pauline Books and Media for the recording of “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A. We're grateful to Emorja Roberson for providing commentary and his singing voice throughout, and to Frank Tuson for his audio wizardry as the engineer on this episode. Frank also composed the Hark! theme music and successfully convinced members of his family to record “Down to the River,” heard on this episode. Our SONG TO CHEW this week is PEACEFUL FEET, from my 'Grow It At Home' album. I wrote it as part of a challenge sent out from Rounder Kids Records asking some of the best artists in children's and family music to create a one-minute song for an album called "HEAR AND GONE IN 60 SECONDS" It included my friends Bill Harley, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Justin Roberts, Kim and Reggie Harris, Tom Paxton, Beethoven's Wig, Dan Crow, Dave Kinnoin, Parachute Express and Joanie Bartels, just to name a few! I wrote a song that was silly, but also had larger themes of world peace, and we'll talk about that process. Thanks for stopping by. Imette St, Guillen Murder case #DarrylLittlejohn #JohJayCollege #NYPD #DNA #Detectives #75Squad The SoHo bar bouncer convicted in the 2006 rape and murder of Imette St. Guillen, a 24-year-old graduate student, was sentenced to life without parole in Brooklyn State Supreme Court. “I hope that the conclusion of these proceedings today will provide you with some small measure of solace,” Judge Abraham G. Gerges told Ms. St. Guillen's relatives. Ms. St. Guillen was last seen alive on Feb. 25, 2006, leaving the Falls bar through a side door at closing time with the bouncer, Darryl Littlejohn. Her body was found handcuffed, gagged and wrapped in a blanket alongside a desolate road in East New York, Brooklyn, later that day. The killing was widely publicized and led the City Council to pass legislation intended to make nightclubs safer. In court, Ms. St. Guillen's mother, Maureen, read aloud a letter that her daughter had written on the night of her 24th birthday. She had spent the day shopping, she wrote, and then had dinner with two girlfriends at a Mexican restaurant before returning home to study. “I will never share another birthday with Imette,” her mother said. She recalled the last time she saw her daughter alive, when the young woman came to visit her in Florida just days before she was killed. She watched her daughter board the plane back to New York, she said, wearing a white shirt and hooded sweatshirt, her hair pulled back in a ponytail. “The last thing she did was turn around and wave and mouth, ‘I love you,' ” she said. Ms. St. Guillen's older sister, Alejandra, struggled to speak, her voice shaking as she held back tears. Mr. Littlejohn, who is currently serving 25 years to life in the kidnapping of a young woman in 2005, did not make a statement before the sentencing and showed no emotion when the judge gave his ruling. And Ms. St. Guillen's hands, and his DNA was found on the handle of a snow brush investigators found near her body. One of his mother's hairs was found on the blanket Ms. St. Guillen's body was wrapped in, as was semen from his brother Reggie Harris, who died in 1994. Prosecutors also used cellphone data to show that later on the day Ms. St. Guillen disappeared, Mr. Littlejohn made the trip from his home in Queens to the area where her body was found and back again. Mr. Littlejohn's lawyer, Joyce David, said she would file a notice of appeal. Speaking outside the courtroom after the sentencing, she said Mr. Littlejohn had remained silent when asked if he wished to make a statement because “there was really nothing for him to say.” “It's hard for him to say he's sorry for something he didn't do,” she said. Mr. Littlejohn has maintained that he was framed to protect Daniel Dorrian, who managed the Falls. Ms. David said that the appeal would focus on documents she has so far been unable to view, including personnel records of one or more detectives who worked on the case, and notes from investigators' meetings.. But the lead prosecutor, Kenneth Taub, said, “Barring some successful appeal, he will die in jail.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. Sometimes stories are so new and different from the ones we are used to hearing that we have a hard time understanding their value. We all have to work through a little fear of the unknown, and it takes some practice to see the goodness in new stories. The good news is, we can learn to see the inherent goodness in those stories. The more we listen to new and different tales, the more we consider the different cultural lenses through which people may see those stories, and therefore, the more we learn to love them and their tellers. In the words of Elder Gerrit W. Gong, “If we are humble, we will be surprised by goodness in unexpected places, and we may create opportunities to grow closer to someone who, like us, is not perfect.” Even if stories differ from the ones you usually tell, you can often find their inherent goodness as you listen. Today's stories will explore quirky ideas like baby birds finding their mother through song, a snake's marriage proposal to a woman, even a donkey challenging a toad to a race! Each story may seem a little odd at first, but if you listen for a bit of their inherent goodness, you will hear themes of familial strength and expanded love. On today's episode, enjoy the following: "The Woman and the Snake" by Barry Stewart Mann from The Improbable Love of Ethel and Elmer and Other Offbeat Tales of Romance (1:54) "The Three Army Surgeons" by Ingrid Nixon from Grimm's with a Twist (11:19) "Donkey & Toad" by The Storycrafters from Classics with a Twist (21:31) "The People Who Could Fly" by Kim and Reggie Harris (30:55) "The Little Red Hen" by Donald Davis from Grandma's Lap Stories (47:43)

What is it about villains that we like so much? How do we overcome the instinct to deny our guilt and plead our case when being painted as a villain in a scene? What role does status play in the hero-villain relationship? These are the themes that Arastoo Darkashan, Reggie Harris, and I have fun discussing. Arastoo is a regular performer with Synergy Theater, and also pursues acting, writing, and music. Reggie uses what he learns in Synergy Theater classes in his professional voiceover work. Reggie's company, Better Together, offers coaching on how to use improv principles in on-the-job settings. The truth is, every good dramatic story needs a villain. Get in touch with your dark side, in service to the story, with Reggie and Arastoo!
Aired: June 2, 2021 A special Sustain What episode with two scientists, a journalist and a songwriter offering ways to navigate turbulence, polarization and disinformation with the fewest regrets. Join Andy Revkin of Columbia's Climate School with Carnegie Mellon philosopher Andy Norman; solution-focused journalist Amanda Ripley; Columbia University psychologist and conflict dissector Peter Coleman, and songwriter and storyteller Reggie Harris. Send feedback and ideas for future shows: http://j.mp/sustainwhatfeedback Here's more on our guests: - Peter T. Coleman, a professor of psychology and education at Columbia University, will discuss lessons from his new book, “The Way Out - How to Overcome Toxic Polarization.” Coleman holds a joint appointment at Teachers College and the Earth Institute and directs two research centers. He is also the author of “Making Conflict Work: Harnessing the Power of Disagreement” (2014) and “The Five Percent: Finding Solutions to Seemingly Impossible Conflicts” (2011), among other books. He says “The Way Out” is “about why we are stuck in our current cultural riptide and what we can do to find our way out. It will explain how patterns of intractable polarization can and do change, and offer a set of principles and practices for navigating and healing the more difficult divides in your home, workplace and community.” Learn more: https://thewayoutofpolarization.com/ - Reggie Harris is a longtime folk singer and songwriter, storyteller and educator who has worked and sung for racial understanding, human rights and justice for decades. He'll speak about his experiences at the interface of love and hate, Black and White and maybe sing a song or two. He describes his new album, “On Solid Ground,” as a “call for personal and national grounding in the explosion of racial and civil unrest and the growing worldwide death spiral that was 2020.” Explore Harris's music, writing and activities: https://reggieharrismusic.com/ - Andy Norman teaches philosophy and directs the Humanism Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University. He says his focus is studying how ideologies short-circuit minds and corrupt moral understanding and developing tools that help people reason together in more fruitful ways. Norman will describe insights offered in his new book, “Mental Immunity: Infectious Ideas, Mind-Parasites, and the Search for a Better Way to Think." Learn more: https://andynorman.org/ - Amanda Ripley is a solutions-focused journalist and bestselling author who has become a champion of a new style of journalism sifting less for sound bites and more for pathways to insight amid complexity. Her new book is “High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out.” Here's Ripley's summary of this concept: “When we are baffled by the insanity of the ‘other side'—in our politics, at work, or at home—it's because we aren't seeing how the conflict itself has taken over. That's what ‘high conflict' does. People do escape high conflict. Individuals—even entire communities—can short-circuit the feedback loops of outrage and blame, if they want to. This is a mind-opening new way to think about conflict that will transform how we move through the world.” Explore: https://amandaripley.com/high-conflict Sustain What, produced and hosted by Andy Revkin, is a series of conversations seeking progress where complexity and consequence collide.

Juneteenth commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) when Union General Gordon Grainger announced General Order No.3 proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas. Celebrations of the date happened at the time, but eventually took a back seat to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. With the advent of Black Lives Matter, new emphasis has been placed on the holiday … and we’ll be celebrating this week as well. We'll share music from Reggie Harris, Eric Bibb, Robert Finley, Our Native Daughters, Sweet Honey in the Rock and many more. It’s Juneteenth ... this week on The Sing Out! Radio Magazine. Musical storyteller Reggie Harris posted this candid essay on his Facebook page the day before the 2020 U.S. election and from there it was shared dozens of times. While it was written in response to a specific event, its message of perseverance is helpful for all seekers after social and environmental justice.

Even if stories differ from the ones you tell, you can often find their inherent goodness as you listen. Today's stories will explore quirky ideas like a snake's marriage proposal to a woman and even a donkey challenging a toad to a race! Each story may seem a little odd at first, but if you listen for a bit of their inherent goodness, you will hear themes of familial strength and expanded love. Today on The Apple Seed, enjoy the following:"The Woman and the Snake" by Barry Stewart Mann from The Improbable Love of Ethel and Elmer and Other (8:23)Professional actor, writer, and storyteller Barry Stewart Man tells of a girl named Ambala, who can't seem to get rid of her illness. One day, the snake she and her father take care of every day appears to her in a dream, and tells her she will be healed. When she finds herself free of the illness soon after, she begins living a confident life till she is again visited by the snake in another dream. This time, he declares that she will marry him! And so, believing his predictions, she prepares to do just that. Listen in as Barry tells The Woman and the Snake, from his album The Improbable Love of Ethel and Elmer and Other. "The Three Army Surgeons" by Ingrid Nixon from Grimm's with a Twist (8:34)Inspirational speaker and storyteller Ingrid Nixon tells of three army surgeons who were so skilled that they could remove their own body parts and sew them right back on by morning. One day, during their stay at an inn, the surgeons body parts go missing – the inn keeper and his wife find a way to replace their body parts, hoping they will not notice the different when morning comes. Puzzle along to this quirky tale as Ingrid tells The Three Army Surgeons, from her album Grimm's with a Twist. "Donkey and Toad" by The Storycrafters from Classics with a Twist (8:00)Storytelling duo Barry Marshall and Jeri Burns, also known as The Storycrafters, tell of a donkey who would always brag about his long, strong legs as he laughs about his friend Toad's short, stubby ones. Toad enlists his children in helping him win the race, and instructs to jump out at Donkey and sing their ancestral song at him as he passes by. Tune in to the lyrics of this quirky song as The Storycrafters sing along to Donkey and Toad, from their album Classics with a Twist. "The People Who Could Fly" by Kim and Reggie Harris (16:19)Our country is still wrestiling with a history so entangled with the enslavement of fellow human beings. A wealth of stories grew up among those enslaved people. And it's so remarkable that such a persistent thread among those stories is the thread of the mythical ability of the people to fly away to the magical country called "Freedom". This story called "the People Who Could Fly" was recorded live at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. "The Little Red Hen" by Donald Davis from Grandma's Lap Stories (8:09)Donald Davis usually enthralls audiences with stories of his youth growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. But he tells traditional tales, too. Like "The Little Red Hen".

I ask that as you listen you notice what may trigger certain thoughts and emotions within you. Be willing to become self aware of how the conversation is effecting you. Sit with these feelings and the awareness and begin to think about what you may want to learn more about, change, or get help growing in. Kim and Reggie Harris are Steve's guests. Great harmonies and funny songs, they've been playing for decades with the likes of Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte, Jay Leno, Tom Paxton, and many others. Also, Steve and Harry audition candidates to be the new script girl but all they get is a script guy, script grandma, script dog, and none of them fit the bill. It's funnier than it sounds. Harry also sings the Dummy Song with Steve accompanying him on the piano.
After a long hiatus, the podcast returns for a brief but mighty season 3! Our opener is Stephen Okey’s interview with Kim and Reggie Harris.
