We take a trip over the pond to talk about a much praised film, Eden Lake. But does it live up to the hype or does it just have an unexpectedly great cast? Find out as we take a weekend trip to Eden Lake.
Send us a textWoHos!Mac and I are back to talk all things "Forest Horror" with two Englsih horror films: EDEN LAKE from 2008 and THE RITUAL from 2017.The Internet describes EDEN LAKE as "A young couple on a romantic weekend break at a remote lakehouse, are terrorised by a group of vicious delinquents".The Internet describes THE RITUAL as "Reuniting after the tragic death of their friend, four college pals set out to hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. A wrong turn leads them into the mysterious forests of Norse legend, where an ancient evil exists and stalks them at every turn".We talk a lot about how much we preferred the novel of THE RITUAL much more than the film. Probably too much. I'm sorry. We also talk: Being in the dead dad club, Eastern NC accents, Is Michael Fassbender a badman? and how weird guns are.Next time on the main show Mac and I discuss "Obsession Over Art" films with THE PERFECTION & STOPMOTION.Thanks for all your support. Tune in as Clayton Jones II (Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies Podcast) heads back to this program for a review and recap of The Killing of a Sacred Deer, the 2017 film that follows a cardiovascular surgeon and his family as their meticulous and pristine life starts to collapse at the hands of a teenage boy. James Watkins has been confirmed as the director for Clayface, DC's upcoming horror-inspired film, scripted by Mike Flanagan. Set for release on September 11, 2026, the movie is described as a horror-thriller-tragedy, focusing on the tragic aspects of Clayface rather than portraying him as a traditional villain.DC co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves, with Chantal Nong as executive producer. With Watkins attached, casting can now begin.Watkins, known for The Woman in Black, Eden Lake, and the recent $76M hit Speak No Evil, brings strong horror credentials to the project. This move aligns with DC's growing embrace of genre-driven storytelling, hinting at a darker, more psychological take on Batman's world.Further details, including casting, are expected soon.

The creepy, uncomfortable 2022 original version of this film rated high with us. The Danish film directed and written by Christian and Mads Tafdrup was an intense study in dread, anxiety and tension. Do we really need a remake only three years later? Enter James Watkins who brought us the brutal Eden Lake back in 2008 to see if he is up to the task. There's a plethora of "eat the rich" films these days, films that relish in showing the wealthy suffer without, god forbid, rocking the status quo. My guest today is Tosha R. Taylor is quite skeptical of the trend. Tosha R. Taylor is a writer, former academic, and regularly publishes and presents on horror, extremity, and queerness. We talk about the history of class in cinema, the invisibility of class issues in the majority of films, hillbilly horror, and Tosha picks some of her favorite class-conscious horror films. In this episode, we sit aside the movie deep dives to tackle a discussion topic in honor of the spooky season. And what better topic to discuss than the things that actually scare us. So join us as we get deep and share it all, highlighting five films that have really and truly scared us in our lives. The criteria were simple: the film had to legitimately scare us either when we first watched to the point it left some significant impact or still actually unnerves us today. And by scared, we specifically mean the type where you're still thinking about the film after. Jumpscares are fun, and we love them, but like a funhouse ride the moment is fleeting. Jason drills down on the origin of his preoccupation with child endangerment in film. Dustin unpacks his crippling fear of all things creepy crawly. But before all that, we dish on some of our October daily viewings and weigh in on Art the Clown's ascension to horror icon with Terrifier 3. And so much more! This week, we go back to 2008 to revisit the uncomfortable, British horror-thriller Lake Eden. Written and directed by James Watkins, this film, in some ways primed him for Speak No Evil, his latest filmmaking assignment. Additionally, you get Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly early in their careers, portraying a young couple who get terrorized by a group of young townie-hoodies. Eden Lake has been cited as a film commenting on “Broken Britain” moral panic of the early 21st century. Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Outro: “Wires” – Dead and Gone
Headlined by James McAvoy, Speak No Evil is a taut suspence film that's the latest from director James Watkins. Previously responsible for Eden Lake and The Woman In Black, amongst others, he joins Simon for a special episode of Film Stories. They chat about Speak No Evil, and the confidence of holding tension. Plus, editing with Jon Harris, a bit of Rolling Thunder, and a whole lot more... Learn more about your ad choices. A remote lake in the country for a couple turns violent when they start getting harassed by a group of local kids.Eden Lake stars Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender, who both have great performances in a movie that is very bleak and hard to watch. While the movie is very entertaining, it's very frustrating to watch and see local kids terrorize a couple who for the most part are keeping to themselves. It's a film that doesn't get better for the protagonists as it goes on, but has a very engaging story. Watch the movie and catch our review. Spice up again: DUNE kommt noch einmal ins Kino. And it's a wrap, wieder eine Sendung gut gefüllt. Bei der wünschen wir Euch nun viel Spaß. Mindestens genauso viel wie im Kino oder auf der Couch mit ein paar schönen Filmen. Bleibt gesund und gut drauf. Buona sera. Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von Radio Bob!

We hear from a writer today who recently got some feedback that her “narrative structure” needed some work. She's dealing with multiple POVs and timelines, so where should she go from here? The question opens up a slew of issues about choices in POV and handling time as well as structure. We've got authors Mark Cecil and Jane Roper to help her figure it all out.Watch a recording of our live webinar here. The audio/video version is available for one week. Missed it? Let's get everyone talking about Kelly Reilly! Kelly is a performer who clearly has a lot of industry respect, racking up many noteworthy credits. But where these roles felt primed to launch her to lofty heights, things never quite lined up as we'd imagine for someone who feels destined for big things. In this career retrospective, we take on some of Kelly's film highlights to discuss along the way: Pride & Prejudice (Joe Wright, 2005), Mrs Henderson Presents (Stephen Frears, 2005), Eden Lake (James Watkins, 2008), Sherlock Holmes and it's sequel A Game Of Shadows (Guy Ritchie, 2009 & 2011), Flight (Robert Zemeckis, 2012), Calvary (John Michael McDonagh, 2014), 10x10 (Suzi Ewing, 2018) and A Haunting In Venice (Kenneth Branagh, 2023). Having proven her prowess many times, we are holding out for that major moment which will give her the opportunity to dazzle us all. To help manifest those opportunities we have come up with some ideas of our own to share with you all. Ron, Steve, and John are looking for nice vacation spots and have narrowed it down to three choices: A remote quarry in the English countryside, New York City, or Barbieland. As research, they watched UK “hoodie horror” nail-biter Eden Lake (2008), Apple TV+'s adaptation of Victor LaValle's wild, scary, and emotional novel The Changeling, and an obscure little movie you probably haven't heard of called “Barbie.” Listen in to find out where the guys end up.
Spike and his resistance fighters discuss a multitude of topics including stealing thunder from a bride and groom at the reception, dragonfly rocket propulsion, Steve's birthday, and the crew's homework assignments. Spike recommends "Eden Lake".

The book is The Society of Shame and one of the many, many ways you can tell it's satire is that it keeps making people who don't get it mad. Satire is fiction, hopped up on humor and then amped up by all the things that seem like they couldn't quite happen and yet you know they might. (Another commonality of good satire? The most outrageous bits are often the ones that come straight from the headlines. The author is Jane Roper, who is also the author of a memoir, Double Time: How I Survived–and Mostly Thrived–Through the First Three Years of Mothering Twins, another novel, Eden Lake, numerous personal essays and humor pieces, and a very eclectic Substack, Jane's Calamity. She MAY be the first graduate of the famous Iowa Writer's Workshop to appear on the pod, and we talk about that, as well as the parenting memoir ghetto. But mostly we're focused on satire—what it is, how it's really playing with fire, and why it still needs heart. In this timely and witty combination of So You've Been Publicly Shamed and Where'd You Go, Bernadette? a viral photo of a politician's wife's "feminine hygiene malfunction" catapults her to unwanted fame in a story that's both a satire of social media stardom and internet activism, and a tender mother-daughter tale. Kathleen Held's life is turned upside down when she arrives home to find her house on fire and her husband on the front lawn in his underwear. But the scandal that emerges is not that Bill, who's running for Senate, is having a painfully cliched affair with one of his young staffers: it's that the eyewitness photographing the scene accidentally captures a period stain on the back of Kathleen's pants. Overnight, Kathleen finds herself the unwitting figurehead for a social media-centered women's right movement, #YesWeBleed. Humiliated, Kathleen desperately seeks a way to hide from the spotlight. But when she stumbles upon the Society of Shame--led by the infamous author Danica Bellevue--Kathleen finds herself part of a group who are all working to change their lives after their own scandals. Using the teachings of the society, Kathleen channels her newfound fame as a means to reap the benefits of her humiliation and reclaim herself. But as she ascends to celebrity status, Kathleen's growing obsession with maintaining her popularity online threatens her most important relationship IRL: that with her budding activist daughter, Aggie. Hilarious and heartfelt, The Society of Shame (Anchor, 2023) is a pitch-perfect romp through politics and the perils of being "extremely online"--without losing your sanity or your true self. This week Mike is joined by the wonderful Joe Lipsett (Horror Queers, Anatomy of a Scream podcast network) for a discomfort horror movie. We're packing our tents and sleeping bags and heading to the English lakeside for the incredibly unpleasant EDEN LAKE. It's hard to believe that this unsettling, gory little thriller gave rise to two massive stars with Michael Fassbender and Yellowstone's Kelly Reily. We dive into the “hoodie horror” phenomenon and explore the conservative messaging that helped fuel the boon this subgenre enjoyed during the aughts. We also explore the class issues at play, the mental health effects of systemic poverty, the challenges of parenting unruly bastards of kids, and just why the kids seem so scary when we get old(er). Despite never wanting to watch even a single second of this movie again, Mike had a fantastic conversation with Joe that we hope you'll enjoy.
