Today's episode is a little different. In https://authenticleadershipforeverydaypeople.com/podcast/susan-cattaneo-songwriting-leadership-creative-environments/ (Episode 36 ) singer-songwriter Susan Cattaneo and I discussed the lessons that leaders can learn from those who lead and teach in creative environments. Since she is my wife, we also discussed the pros and cons of working with your spouse. In this episode, Susan comes back and we talk about the process of writing, recording and producing her album All Is Quiet. Key Takeaways [02:40] – Let's talk about All Is Quiet and let's start with the type of record that it is. [03:51] – The last record took us six months to record, we had like 5 studios, and people were there. I remember talking about this record, let's just get two guitar players, a studio, and we'll do it in three days. [05:03] – What was the original title meaning? [07:39] – Don't be bummed out, everyone is having a different pandemic. [10:01] – It was a very trusted team, for us. [14:26] – I think it really is a testament to their artistry that allowed me to shine, and they supported me really beautifully. [17:28] – Recording remotely because we couldn't get together in real life. [18:16] – I want to talk for a second about the harmonies. [20:50] – Discuss the song All Is Quiet [22:44] – The album is done a little bit old school, in that the order of the songs is well thought out. [23:49] - A music track is being played. [26:04] – Another music track is being played. [26:48] – So one can say that the album begins with an end and ends with a beginning. [27:00] – Let's go back to the beginning. [28:20] – The spelling of the title, is intentional. [29:50] – The verb choices that I use are really important. [30:39] – Thank you and closing remarks. Authentic Leadership for Everyday People is the podcast where we investigate the connection between effective leadership and authenticity. If you are looking for inspiration and tips on how to become a better leader by being your true self, you are in the right place. Today's guest is award winning Americana singer-songwriter Susan Cattaneo. Susan started her career as a writer-producer in television, where she ended up running on air promotion for WPIX, New York's number 1 independent channel. She left that career to attend Berklee College of Music on a vocal scolarship and was hired to teach songwriting there upon graduation. Susan talks about what it is like to teach and work with creative people, and the lessons that leaders can take from that process. Since we are married, and I am also her manager, we also talk about what are some factors that make a work partnership between life partners successful. KEY TAKEAWAYS [03:36] - Susan, welcome to Authentic Leadership for Everyday People, how are you doing? [04:22] – Why don't you start by giving my listeners, our listeners, a background of how you started some key changes though your career. [07:31] – This interruption, part of our dynamic, you do have the tendency to under play your accomplishments. [09:42] – If any body listening here is interesting in learning about writing lyrics, check out Pat Pattison on Coursear. [10:21] – Take me to the moment when you actually made the decision to [11:12] – What was the moment, of saying, “that is okay, I am willing to step away from this” and what was the driver? [14:47] – You made the discovery of a new professional path, that you didn't know at the time, which was the staff-song writer. [16:33] – We both had to make an adjustment, I think, and we moved back to Boston. And that is when you started teaching. [17:56] – If you were to step in the shoes of a manager or senior leader who is coaching new younger employees that are coming, and they may have some skills, what are some of the things that you learn in terms of being effective? [20:48] – What are some of the elements that make a successful co-writing session? [24:15] – There is obviously the scenario where you know that you are writing something that is going to be for you. [25:22] – I remember the day I told you, “You went to Berkley cause you wanted to be an artist, you have this enormous catalog of songs, no body is buying records anymore, let's have you become an artist”. [27:27] – I think this is a really important part in this podcast, I always ask people was there a moment when something didn't go the way you wanted. So I made a decision to go and start out on my own as a marketing consultant with the idea that sixty percent of my time would be dedicated to that and the other forty percent would be dedicated to managing my wife's career as a musician, spending more time with my kids and doing the things I love doing.” (18:51) (Dino) “There's a very important balance when you're building a service practice, whether it's a consulting practice or an agency. And that is that you need to sell projects where on one hand you have the ability to execute and you're good at, but there also needs to be something new that you haven't done because that's how you build the capabilities of the firm.” (24:39) (Dino) “I felt that a podcast was essentially the place where I could be my true self and just create the podcast and share the content to really express what I believe about how leadership works and operates.” (30:47) (Dino) “The Arts are a really difficult world from a success standpoint. And the people who end up staying for the duration are the people that are rewarded by the creative process.” (46:26) (Dino) “Somebody recently said, ‘People who invest money to save time have a longer career in business than people who invest time to save money.'” (53:12) (Dino) RESOURCES MENTIONED https://fullcast.co/ (FullCast Website) https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastjunkiesjunkies/ (Podcast Junkies Junkies Facebook Group) https://podfestexpo.com/ (Link to Podfest Expo Virtual Summit) https://www.linkedin.com/in/dinocattaneo/ (Dino's LinkedIn) Dino's Email https://www.instagram.com/al4edp/ (Dino's Instagram) https://twitter.com/al4edp (Dino's Twitter) https://susancattaneo.com/ (Link to Susan Cattaneo's Website) https://www.amazon.com/Who-Not-How-Accelerating-Teamwork-ebook/dp/B0867ZJ151 (Link to Who, Not How) https://authenticleadershipforeverydaypeople.com/ (Authentic Leadership for Everyday People Website)...

Being an artist often means you spend your life looking for a place that feels right, finding it, and then leaving it as quickly as you can. Creative fulfilment as Brigadoon. In 2021, Jenee Halstead released Disposable Love, an album that sounds in many ways like the one she was always meant to make. With producer Dave Brophy and collaborators like Susan Cattaneo, Halstead has crafted an elegant pop album with a sonic palette that spans from her earlier acoustic sound to horn-driven R&B to something more ethereal. She took some chances to do something different, part of which was allowing herself to sing happier pop songs, which she says can feel even more vulnerable than some of the more folky confessional songs she has written in the past. But then, she's always kept moving. She recently found new context in her writing after an Ayahuasca ceremony, and she's looking forward to incorporating chants into her next project. That is all covered in this conversation about the arc of her career and the sound of Disposable Love.  You can find her music on Apple and Google and Spotify and all the usual places. To keep track of the new stuff you can go to www.jeneehalstead.com and find her on Twitter and Instagram under @jeneehalstead. The new album is Disposable Love, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

It felt like I had this reset button on life. And I'll be honest, it's very hard for people to understand this, but this experience turned into – and I am not exaggerating – the greatest blessing of my life.” (08:38) “I remember having this ‘Aha' moment where I realized that if I didn't start talking about this, it would become exponentially harder for me every single day to talk about it at all.” (13:50) “I'm not afraid anymore. I'm not afraid of things. That doesn't mean that I don't have little fears that come up but I have a vision for the kind of life that I want to lead, and the kind of business that I'm building and the kind of impact I want to make. And it makes whatever little fears that come up feel like nothing.” (17:15) “Yeah, there's a rawness. But what that means is that I connect more deeply with people, I feel more deeply, I am inspired more easily. I am connected to life and to others in a way that I think I avoided for so much of my life. And to me it's the greatest gift that I ever could have asked for.” (19:28) “For me, there is no greater purpose than helping somebody else feel the strength and the courage to show up authentically and holistically as themselves.” (23:24) “I am a big believer in treating yourself to a decadent meal and savoring every single bit of it.” (36:13)  Links Mentioned:    Kasey Links LinkedIn –  https://www.linkedin.com/in/abetterjones/ (linkedin.com/in/abetterjones/)  Kasey's Twitter – https://twitter.com/ABetterJones (@abetterjones) Instagram: https://instagram.co/ABetterJones (@abetterjones ) Kasey's Website – https://abetterjones.com/ (abetterjones.com)  Kasey's 5 Easy Steps to Unapologetically Build a Powerful Personal Brand: https://go.abetterjones.com/ppb (go.abetterjones.com/ppb)   Authentic Leadership for Everyday People Email: dino@al4ep.com Website: https://authenticleadershipforeverydaypeople.com/ (al4ep.com) Facebook  - https://facebook.com/al4edp (facebook.com/al4edp ) Twitter: https://twitter.com/al4edp (@al4edp.com) Instagram:...

Those are generally the forces that shape us as human beings.” (12:22) “I would urge folks that if you want to focus on the financial side, I would focus on profits over sales and revenue. If you want to focus on happiness, I would worry much less about size. Most entrepreneurs I know who have businesses between five and fifty employees are much happier than those that have five hundred to five thousand.” (16:23) “I love proving people wrong. Oh man. When someone tells me ‘You can't do this. No way that's gonna work,' oh my God, there's nothing more I like more than proving them wrong.” (23:37) “What does it mean to be a conscientious and thoughtful and empathetic leader and founder and company? And what is the way we want to participate in the world around us. Those are big picture conversations.” (35:29) “I think it's pretty darn obvious to anyone and everyone that if all you're after is Google rankings: A.) That might not be the best thing in the world, you might want to diversify your marketing and B.) Our guest today is Marcel Quiroga, Founder and CEO of TQM Wealth Partners, a registered investment advisory firm. Marcel is not your typical founder of a wealth management firm. First of all, she is a woman in an industry that is still very much a male dominated industry. Second, she has a unique international perspective. She grew up in the US from Bolivian parents, went back to Bolivia to start her career and then came back to the US. Finally, she put herself through college while raising her kids as a single mother, and working her way up in the industry.  All of these experiences have given her a uniquely empathetic view of the role of a financial advisor, and have led her to start a firm where success is measured not just by the numbers, but by how wealth management can improve her clients' overall quality of life. Marcel is also the Founder of The Legacy Dialogues, a program geared at helping people to find a path towards living their legacy and making a difference in the world. In this episode, Marcel opens up about her leadership style, the inspiration to launch her own investment advisory firm and her experience navigating the male-dominated field of finance. Marcel shares her thoughts on authenticity, leaving a legacy and why everything she does is in service of her clients' values.  Key Takeaways: 01:27 – Introducing today's guest, Marcel Quiroga, who speaks to the inspiration to start her own investment advisory firm and her personal leadership journey  10:05 – Marcel speaks to navigating a heavily male-dominated field and how it has shaped her experience as a leader  15:59 – Marcel shares her thoughts on authenticity and her mission to help others  26:36 – Marcel expounds on the work she's doing at her latest initiative, The Legacy Dialogues  35:10 – Marcel talks about other passions of hers that influence the way she shows up at work  37:50 – The business phrase that drives Marcel absolutely crazy 39:56 – Marcel shares some food for your body and food for your soul  44:23 – Dino leaves the audience with the acoustic version of ‘Work Hard, Love Harder,' a song written and performed by his wife, Susan Cattaneo  Tweetable Quotes: “Oftentimes I felt like the places where I was working were not led by individuals who had as much focus on the human element as they did on the money element, for lack of a better term.” (04:24) “I think one thing that helped me realize what kind of a leader I wanted to be is becoming aware of the type of leader I did not want to be from a personal perspective. Meaning, the first time I had a team that I was in charge with, I didn't have enough self-confidence, I believe, at that time to lead the team.” (06:31) “Ultimately, I think humility is a key trait in leadership which means I can recognize the good, the bad and the ugly. I know where my strengths are. I know where my weaknesses lie, and I'm gonna work on improving those.” (09:38) “I want to attract other people who have that desire to do well and do good at the same time. And I want my clients to know that what we're doing for them is beyond the numbers.” (19:00) “The Legacy Dialogues seeks to empower and enable people to think about how they want to live their lives because we actually live our legacies. The way we live is going to influence our legacy more than what we leave behind.” (27:18) “It's also not easy to hear constructive criticism, but it's so important for growth. If everybody tells us how great we are all the time, we might actually believe it. Yes, we may be good, but we can always be better.” (39:36) Links Mentioned:  Marcel's LinkedIn – https://linkedin.com/in/marcelquiroga/ (linkedin.com/in/marcelquiroga/)  TQM Wealth Partners - https://www.tqmwealthpartners.com/ (tqmwealthpartners.com/ ) Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/tqmwealthpartners/ ( @tqmwealthpartners)...

And, it's just so easy and gratifying to know that you might invest in others and because of it there may be a skip in their step or wind at their back.” (12:05) “Success for me is really two things: Has my tenure in a role resulted in progress for the business? Has it resulted in progress for the people I have been entrusted with?” (15:10) “I think it's important to be a whole person, not perhaps just narrow and focused on a career or an industry.” (18:49) “In a leader I look for energy. I look for ambition. I look for integrity. And, importantly – consistent with this whole conversation – I look for what I call, ‘whole people.' Yes, I want people who are good at their jobs, but it is my belief that people are more effective and seen as a role model and an aspirational leader to their team if there are multiple dimensions.” (24:11) “I think good leaders master feedback in an advocacy mode. As a native New Englander, Ric has spent nearly half his life as an acoustic musician, visual artist, and educator. Since attending the first Cape Cod Songwriters Retreat in January of 2014 and finding a loyal community of peers, his music pursuits have led to recognition as a finalist in two national performing songwriter competitions (2017) and the 2018 CT Folk Festival audition concert (2018). Among his most noteworthy features are the Club Passim Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Woodstock Tribute Nights, Club Passim 2018 Memorial Day Campfire Festival, The Spire Center of Performing Arts opening for Ray Wylie Hubbard, South Shore Folk Music Club opening for Susan Cattaneo, Amazing Things Arts Center opening for Archie Fisher, the Rose Garden Coffeehouse opening for Abbie Gardner, and Off The Common Coffeehouse opening for The Boxcar Lilies, Soule Homestead opening for The LIed To's, and Titicut Green Coffeehouse opening for Daring Angels (Kathy Phipps and Wendy Sobel). He's also actively performing throughout southeastern New England at markets, galleries, eateries, wine bars, and coffeehouses. Ric uses music as navigation, discovery, and anchoring. His songs, while personal, feel intuitively familiar. The listener is guided by an ease that is steady and supportive as a mast. Whether performing solo or in collaboration, Ric's playing style gravitates toward unique voicings, percussive frailing, and meticulous fingerpicking patterns that honor his influences – early folk & blues, singer-songwriters of the 80s and 90s, and traditional Celtic and British fingerstyle players. In late 2016, Ric joined a long-time friend, touring sound engineer Brian Evans, to record his debut CD titled Take It All In which includes eight original songs and one by another friend and collaborator Joe L'Esperance. The CD features violinist Katy Boc of Sparrow Blue, singer/instrumentalist Raianne Richards, drummer Jeff Armstrong, and San Antonio guitarist Bob Charles. The mostly-acoustic songs explore themes from throughout Ric's life, but primarily from 2007 to 2017 when his most significant personal growth would happen. Milestones like the passing of his parents, birth of his daughter, diagnosis and treatment for cancer, loss of a long-held career position in the arts, and the disillusionment of a close personal relationship would plunge him into a deep well of reflection. The results of his inner 'smithing' would be this collection of songs that pay gratitude to his mentors (Take It All In, Open Book), assure those lost in doubt (See What The Morning Brings), recognize losses (Little Wren, Thieves on the Shore, Changing Tide), honor partners and healers (Soldier's Armory), and reveal the quiet hope that lives behind our challenges (Morning Drive). When not playing music, Ric remains active in the visual arts, teaching illustration at Massachusetts College of Art & Design in Boston and designing identities for the Cape Cod Songwriters' Retreat, the New Haven Folk Consortium, and the Americana band Sparrow Blue; illustrated promos for Monica Rizzio and the Vinegrass Music Festival; concert posters for the Rose Garden Coffeehouse; and CD packaging for a number of releases including Andy & Judy's 'Reflections', and David Roth's 'Think Twice', 'Practice Makes Progress', 'So Far So Good', and 'Last Day On This Earth'.

Above The Basement - Boston Music and Conversation

Berklee College of Music in Boston is one of the premier music schools in the world. We have talked with many fantastic Berklee grads, including the folks from Honeysuckle, RIPE, Alison Keslow and Matt McArthur to name just as few as well as musicians and Berklee professors Bonnie Hayes and Susan Cattaneo. We wanted to talk with the man who helped make this school the institution it is today so we jumped at the chance to speak with drummer, humanitarian, entrepreneur and Berklee president Roger Brown. Roger has had a prolific career, including co-directing one famine relief program called Land Bridge on the Cambodia-Thailand border which was the largest emergency food distribution effort ever attempted and another called Save The Children in Sudan. Later he co-founded Bright Horizons Family Solutions, which provided on-site child care for client-company employees and is also the founder of the Horizons Initiative, which provides services for homeless children, and the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, which creates play spaces in homeless shelters. Mr. Brown became president of Berklee College of Music in 2004. We sat with Roger in a performance classroom at 1140 Boylston Street and talked about his humanitarian efforts, Berklee goals for its current and future students, how they prepare students for a successful career and why music is so important. Song List: Song one: Beautiful Ones (Roger Brown)
