Curl up on your couch in your Kierkegaard Snuggie and get ready for the universe to show up with some judgement — good times!. God's Comic, originally by Elvis Costello, covered by Craig Cardiff. Outro music is Veronica, by The Unwieldies, which we'll probably have to talk about some time on the show.
Whizbangers and swizzle sticks. Season two is really rocketing out of the mental Cape Canaveral of our mindspheres. I'm so thankful to have had some insanely talented guests so far and episode 4 (4 already?! DANG SON!) is NO different. But also different. Because yeah. We don't want to paint people with a broad brush here in Graventown. Broad brushes just leave more cleanup. Boy, I've really painted myself into a corner. Anyhoozleby...the next guest is not only a 613 pal and someone who I've collaborated with musically in different parts of Canada, but someone who crushes crowds in every venue she graces. On the podcast this week, Mike's hears the stories and lessons of Geoff Kulawick's life in the music industry. He's the founder and president of Linus Entertainment, which now has exclusive control of a catalogue of over 2,000 albums, with the overwhelming majority by Canadian artists. Linus is also the parent company to Spring Hill Music, Stony Plain Records, and True North Records, which makes it one of the powerful players in roots music in Canada, representing artists like Buffy Sainte-Marie, Matt Andersen, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Fred Penner, Craig Cardiff, and so many more. Here, Geoff recounts his entry into the music business, why he opted to launch his own label just as Napster was decimating the industry, his philosophy on doing business and working with artists, and a whole lot more. Then, for the second interview today, Mike happens to chat with someone from the Stony Plain Records roster. That is, Mike McDonald of alt-country pioneers Jr. Gone Wild. He and his old friends are back with the first album of new material from Jr. Gone Wild in 25 years. McDonald chats about how the industry has changed, how the band naturally found its then-unique sound that combines folk, punk, and country; growing up as friends and artists; and more.
First up on the podcast this week, Mike chats with highly-buzzed about Mohawk, Two-Spirited singer-songwriter Shawnee Kish (2:20). Shawnee has just released her debut, self-titled EP and in this conversation, she discusses songwriting, navigating the music business as a new artist, her decision to remain independent rather than sign to a label, and a lot more. Then, high-acclaimed veteran singer-songwriter Craig Cardiff (28:10) joins Mike for a wide-ranging conversation about the music industry, labels, being challenged to write more honestly by an elderly concert-goer, and a bunch else. To say Craig Cardiff is active as an artist is truly an understatement. While his latest LP, ‘All This Time Running,' is his first album of new material in six years, he has independently released an astounding total of 25 albums and EPs since his debut release in 1997. He has been nominated for a JUNO award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year for his 2012 album, Floods And Fires, as well as a Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer of the Year, in the same year.
Today I am speaking with Craig Cardiff, the celebrated Canadian folk artist who has released several albums over the course of his 25-year career in Canada. We talk about his latest song and album, how he is doing during COVID and much more. Craig Cardiff is a Canadian folk music musician who's intent on taking his songs to all corners of the world, big and small. Willing to play in the smallest town just to entertain people, Craig has a cerebral take on his music and life, which is also why he is such a wonderful teacher to young people. His new album is called All This Time Running, an ironic title when you consider that Covid has kept him from keeping up his typically hectic touring schedule. Come listen to his chat with WTM hosts Brett and Morten then go listen to the latest Craig Cardiff album, it's music worth going out of your way to listen to. A conversation with Canadian singer/songwriter - Craig Cardiff (https://www.craigcardiff.com/)
On today's episode I am joined by JUNO Nominated singer/songwriter Craig Cardiff, who on Friday, May 14th 2021 released his album “All This Time Running” - his first album of new songs in six years, and his debut on the iconic Canadian label, True North Records.Craig and Alex talk about the writing process for the album, the virtual concert he and his team organized for the release of the album that includes 100+ cities in support of local venues and music arts groups, and what he believes is one of the best songs he's ever written. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:Craig Cardiff's website - https://www.craigcardiff.com/All This Time Running Music Video - https://youtu.be/iqj5WrAezm8True North Records - https://truenorthrecords.com/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/
On March 26th Queens & Kings - aka Alissa Klug & Brendan Albert released "Going Through Hell", the third single from their forthcoming album. The song not only feels timely in a sense that - thanks to the pandemic, we have all felt like we're going through hell - but it paints a vivid image of the ups and downs that any kind of relationship may bring with it. Accompanied with the song is the music video, edited by Alissa - her first kick at editing a music video of any kind - that brilliantly takes you on the rollercoaster journey that she and Brendan have been through over the 10+ years they've known each other. We talk about the process of creating the video, and how the true team effort between the two of them has led to developing an unmistakable visual, and sonic identity. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:Queens & Kings website - https://queensandkingsmusic.com/Going Through Hell Music Video - https://youtu.be/8LMmh54cOGMBreakout West Nominees - https://breakoutwest.ca/blog/2021-western-canadian-music-award-nomineesBreakout West Nomination announcement https://www.facebook.com/breakoutwest/posts/3993511574073511IndieWeek 2021 - https://www.indieweek.com/"All This Time Running" Craig Cardiff - https://youtu.be/iqj5WrAezm8No Sleep Til Sudbury Podcast - https://nosleeptilsudbury.libsyn.com/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/

We have another great performance from our sister video show – The Sun Parlour Coffee House Sessions to bring you on Episode 574 of Folk Roots Radio. This time around we’re joined by Windsor ON based singer-songwriter Philip Scott Poli. Actually, we should say songwriter Philip Scott Poli because Phil is adamant that songwriting is what he loves to do and that he’s not that much of a singer or performer – but we’re going to let you be the judge of that. Phil gave us a great session late last year, and we’re pleased to bring part of that to you on this episode. As always, we also take a look at more of the latest new releases and this time around – it’s all by Canadian artists, as we hear from Bùmarang, Jean-Paul De Roover, Susan Ellenton, Craig Cardiff, Stéafán & Saskia, Scott MacKay, Shane Pendergast, David LaFleche. BEHIND THE DRIVE- SHORTCUTS - VOL.14 - CRAIG CARDIFF - DEC 6 2020 by Hunters Bay Radio
Craig Cardiff has been passing around a Book of Truths during his shows and asking his fans to share something truthful in it — a story, a confession, a hope, a secret. The book gives fans a chance to write down something they might be too afraid to say out loud, and it gives Cardiff an opportunity to connect with the people who take time out of their busy schedules to come to a show. Those entries aren’t always easy to read. The stories can be heartbreaking, and they can leave Cardiff wanting to do something, to find the person who wrote in his book and tell them to hold on for tomorrow, that things will be OK. Over the years, Cardiff has found himself writing songs that offer these little bits of hope for people to hold onto, and those songs are now reaching more and more people after he signed to New York-based AntiFragile Music, founded by Tom Sarig, who previously served as a Grammy-winning senior A&R executive at various major labels, in late 2018. Since founding Esther Creative Group, Sarig has worked with some of the most exciting musical artists in contemporary history, including Lou Reed, The Gaslight Anthem, Bryan Ferry, CAKE, the Violent Femmes, Miranda Cosgrove, Twin Atlantic, Blonde Redhead, Bebel Gilberto, and Against Me!, among others. Cardiff’s songs have now been streamed more than 100 million times, and he has been heard on NBC’s award-winning television series This Is Us. The sudden and shocking death of Rogue volunteer Mary Bentley dominated the show this week. We also lost Rachid Taha, the Algerian Rai singer who inspired The Clash to write Rock The Casbah. New music from Marc Ribot, Mike Farris, Richard Thompson, and stunning Haitian singer Moonlight Benjamin were also featured, and there was a spotlight on Craig Cardiff too.
Check out our guest playlist by OKRP's director of Groupon spots, Luis Peña, who curated hard-rocking and introspective tracks for adventure and the open road. Black Grease — The Black Angels Oh how I love The Black Angels. I almost made the whole mix with just their songs. This is what west Texas sounds like to me. Hustle And Cuss — Dead Weather The sexy duo of Jack White and Alison Mosshart going at it with tension brimming at the seams. We’re starting to break the speed limit. When The Levee Breaks — Led Zeppelin I love air drumming to this masterpiece. Can’t help myself. Full-on smashing the steering wheel to Bonham’s thunder. T.I.B.W.F.— Budos Band I get lost in this song. It’s like a soundtrack to a 60’s horror film about gogo dancers. I love it. Wish You Were Here — Lee Fields & The Expressions My first car was a Chevy Malibu and it only had an AM radio station. And the only station I listened to was KYOK — Soul. Driving and soul go hand and hand to me. You Don’t Love Me-No No No — Dawn Penn I went through a big reggae phase. Actually, I reckon I’m still in it. Dawn Perry’s vocals and the rhythmic bass line gets my head moving every time. Optimistic — Radiohead Ah, Radiohead. You could save the world with your music. I backpacked all throughout Central America in my mid-twenties listening to OK Computer. This is off Kid A. I love how this song builds and builds tension and then releases. Ball of Confusion — Leon Bridges I heard this song the other day and was struck on how current it is today. Leon Bridges does a masterful cover of it. And that bass line is ridiculous. Commit A Crime — Mr. Airplane Man Mr. Airplane Man is the duo of Margaret Garrett and Tara McManus — drums and guitar. Simple and stripped-down grungy blues. That guitar riff makes me want to do terrible things to a Challenger Hellcat. Miss Ohio — Craig Cardiff Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings are on my desert island record list. But this cover of their song by Craig Cardiff is amazing. Gorgeous jazz piano ramblings. “I wanna do right, but not right now.”
New Releases acquired at Tonder and Edmonton Festivals. Previews of Bluebird North #100, Craig Cardiff's concert next Thursday

Luckily, I made it off my duff and out to Neilfest this weekend, and it got me thinking (as I often do) about how amazing our local musicians are. Truly world class, and we’ve got some of the best today, including some songs from Hatcher Briggs, who do a rare live show next weekend. Also next weekend is the return of the amazing CR Avery (along with Wil). We’ve also got some neat new music, some requests, and even a trip to the opera/opry!

Personally, I’ve never really needed the changing of the calendar year as a reason to set and keep a resolution: so any promises I’m going to make are probably a continuation of what I’ve been working towards for the past few years; although I do have a few running-specific resolutions that I’ve set and intend to see through.2009 is finally over and 2010 is upon us. The phrase “Out with the old, in with the new” creates images of hope for a new year, where war and violence come to an end, where the hungry are fed, the sick are healed and the global economic crisis is resolved. Albert Einstein said it best when he said “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow”. The New Year gives us all a clean slate from which to re-create parts of our live for all the roles we play in life. Here’s a wish that the runners in us, have an injury free, PR setting 2010, and that we all enjoy the happiness of a year in motion.Happy New Year. Show Links:“Maybe You Should Drive” by Craig Cardiff
