Warren Zanes is a “rockstar biographer” in more ways than one: he has experienced life as a rockstar, a biographer, and a biographer of rockstars. When Mack first met Warren in New Orleans sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, Zanes was then emerging from the wreckage of meteoric success. He'd been the teenage guitarist in critically acclaimed band The Del Fuegos, who briefly broke into the national popular consciousness—and then just plain broke up. But in the years since, Zanes remade himself into one of our most erudite and entertaining public scholars of popular music. Among other things, he's been Vice President of Education and Public Programs at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a consulting producer on the Oscar-winning film Twenty Feet from Stardom, a producer on the Grammy-nominated PBS/Soundbreaking series, and he conducted interviews for Martin Scorsese's George Harrison documentary. All while keeping up a solo recording career with collaborators such as the Dust Brothers. Warren's books include the first volume in the celebrated 33 1/3 Series, Dusty in Memphis; Petty: The Biography and Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records. His latest book is called Deliver Me from Nowhere. On its face, it's a book about the making of Bruce Springsteen's classic lo-fi album Nebraska. But it's also about sound technology, musicianship teetering in a moment between the analog and digital eras, what it means to be in a band, and the relationship between the four-track cassette recorder and social alienation in Reagan era. In this interview, Warren talks about his journey, the recent book, his craft as a writer, and—as part of our mini-theme this season on audiobooks—the process of narrating his own audiobooks and why he does so.  And for our Patrons we'll have Warren's What's Good segment, with something good to read, listen to, and do. Bet man šķiet, ka..." bilst Zane Daugule. "Arī tādēļ, ka krājumā ne tikai jaunie dzejoļi, bet viens otrs no senākajiem un pat no iepriekšējiem krājumiem. Tā kā mēs jau esam kopā no 2005. gada, šie dzejoļi arī tur iederas, jo tie arī ir tapuši šajā laikā," papildina Māris Salējs. Kādas ir tas sajūtas un brīži, kas nav izsakāmi tādā klasiskā iesim izrunāties valodā, bet ir izsakāmi tikai dzejā? Māris Salējs: Man šķiet, ka to, ko nav tajā brīdi vai tajā laikā iespējams izrunāt vienā līmenī, tas notiek citā līmenī, pārdzīvojuma līmenī.

You see, it was the finality of the last living connection I had to God's gift to all of our careers. The experiences we had with each other changed each of our lives in amazing ways. Sam will always be remembered because of what he gave out of his heart and spirit, along with Dave Prater, in the combination of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, some amazing gifts to the world.I believe his memory will be a blessing forever to the world. And now I am the last of that combination, so I must express what I know was in the origin of the spirit for each of us during the course of recording those records. They were always filled with passion, purity, individuality and believability grounded in soul. The combination made each of our lives major. I express my condolences to Sam's family. May his memory be a blessing. -PBS Concert Special Celebrating Bruce Springsteen's ‘Nebraska' Features Eric Church, Emmylou Harris & MoreRecorded in his New Jersey bedroom, Bruce Springsteen's 1982 album Nebraska has proved to be one of his most enduring works, a raw, haunted acoustic record populated by lost souls searching not for salvation but simply a reason to believe. On September 19, 2023, at Analog at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville, famed music biographer Warren Zanes — author of Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska — hosted an in-depth exploration of the album and the musician's process.Springsteen's songs were performed by multiple legends in their own right, with Zanes's spoken word storytelling in between.“I wrote a book about Nebraska because the recording stayed with me over decades,” said Zanes. “Every time there was trouble in my life I reached for Nebraska. When I started doing events around the book's publication, I quickly realized the best of them had music. When I went to Nashville, I had a remarkable cast of musicians to help me tell this story."Musical performances from Nebraska include Emmylou Harris (“The Price You Pay,” “Nebraska”), Noah Kahan (“Atlantic City”), Lyle Lovett (“Used Cars,” “My Father's House”) and The Lumineers (“Mansion on the Hill,” “State Trooper”). Two additional songs from Born in the U.S.A. are performed by Eric Church (“Dancing in the Dark”) and Lucinda Williams (“Born in the U.S.A.”). Between songs, Zanes offers insights from his book, about which The Boston Globe wrote: “Anyone interested in how music gets made — both the inspiration and the process — will be fascinated by Deliver Me From Nowhere, an amazing chronicle of one of the most unlikely albums ever recorded. And for students of Springsteen, it's an absolute must.”

Without Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen might not be who he is today. The natural follow-up to Springsteen's hugely successful album The River should have been the hit-packed Born in the U.S.A. But instead, in 1982, he came out with an album consisting of a series of dark songs he had recorded by himself, for himself. But more than forty years later, Nebraska is arguably Springsteen's most important record--the lasting clue to understanding not just his career as an artist and the vision behind it, but also the man himself. Nebraska is rough and unfinished, recorded on cassette tape with a simple four-track recorder by Springsteen, alone in his bedroom, just as the digital future was announcing itself. And yet Springsteen now considers it his best album. Nebraska expressed a turmoil that was reflective of the mood of the country, but it was also a symptom of trouble in the artist's life, the beginnings of a mental breakdown that Springsteen would only talk about openly decades after the album's release. Warren Zanes spoke to many people for Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska (Crown, 2023), including Bruce Springsteen himself. He also interviewed more than a dozen celebrated artists and musical insiders, from Rosanne Cash to Steven Van Zandt, about their reactions to the album. Zanes interweaves these conversations with inquiries into the myriad cultural touchpoints, including Terrence Malick's Badlands and the short stories of Flannery O'Conner, that influenced Springsteen as he was writing the album's haunting songs. The result is a textured and revelatory account of not only a crucial moment in the career of an icon but also a record that upended all expectations and predicted a home-recording revolution. Warren Zanes is the New York Times bestselling author of Petty: The Biography. As a member of the Del Fuegos, he has shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, and continues to write and record music. Box Car Racer is a weird and wild look into the mind of Tom DeLonge. At the height of Blink 182's success, Tom and Travis set out to make a harder record, a side project. Things are not always what they seem on this album. Songs that are seemingly breakup songs turn out to be about national tragedy. Tom DeLonge's songwriting is deceptively simple, obfuscating a more complex playing style. The band's existence and how it was communicated to the public seemingly put too much strain on Blink 182, and it went away before it truly got going. Since his first book twenty years ago, musician/author (and all-around music appreciator) Warren Zanes has deftly chronicled what it means to be a rock star without a road map. His acclaimed 2015 authorized biography on Tom Petty -- released just two years prior to his death -- gave readers an engrossing glimpse into the mind of one of rock's great everymen, and this year, Zanes has released a more granular look into arguably the darkest hour of perhaps rock's greatest everyman. 'Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska' is a jaw-dropping read front-to-back, taking readers into the modest bedroom where the Boss recorded his most mysterious and talked-about work. From exclusive interviews with Springsteen, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash and more, Zanes proves that what makes Nebraska so intriguing is not just the complete left-turn that it is musically, but how it's sandwiched between two career highs: His first number one album with The River in 1980, and the superstardom that Born in the U.S.A. would bring him in 1984.   On this week's episode, Zanes tackles Springsteen and Petty's similarities and differences, the hurdle of getting Springsteen's humble Nebraska demo tape transferred for vinyl and CD duplication, and the album's lasting impact over the last four decades. Visit warren-zanes.com for socials and other info. Plus, this episode features covers of Nebraska songs by Aoife O'Donovan. Click here to purchase them as a Bandcamp download.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

41 years ago this month, Bruce Springsteen released his sixth studio album, Nebraska. He recorded much of the album on one winter night, sitting on the edge of the bed in a rented house in New Jersey, playing acoustic guitar and singing, using a 4 track cassette recorder. The album would go on to have lasting influence, inspire other works of art including movies and books, and other records. And Springsteen would later muse that Nebraska may be his best album. Four decades later the story of Nebraska continues to be an object of fascination. Among those who obsessed over it was the musician and writer Warren Zanes. Zanes joined his brother Dan's band, The Del Fuegos, at age seventeen. The band toured with ZZ Top, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, INXS, and others during the time Warren was in the band, and also famously licensed one of their songs for a commercial which led to some serious criticism at the time. Warren then went on to build a career as an academic, a writer (including the best selling biography of Tom Petty, 2015's Petty) an educator (he teaches at New York University) a Grammy-nominated documentary producer, and a musical artist who has released multiple albums under his own name, most recently The Collected Warren Zanes. Throughout it all, he held on to his fascination with Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. He recently published the book Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. Warren and I spoke recently about his own personal journey, his thoughts on stardom, work, The Beach Boys, family, addiction, songwriting, betrayal, college towns, fatherhood, Taylor Swift, working with machines, The Kinks, drummers, Booker T. and the M.G.s, Garth Brooks, artificial intelligence, Joseph Campbell, and of course, Nebraska. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

EZ is now a producer / news guy.  However, the producer chops aren't really up to snuff, as we hear numerous technical fuck-ups and poor drop placement. Our Sponsors:* Check out Factor 75 and use my code zane50 for a great deal: https://www.factor75.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-eric-zane-show-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Depresh Mode with John Moe
The Dark Nebraska of Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen was coming off his first number one album and first top ten single when, in 1982, he retreated to a small New Jersey bedroom to record something unexpected. What he made, the album Nebraska, is darker, starker, simpler, and deeper than any of his previous work and it reflected some of the more painful components of Springsteen's mental makeup. Warren Zanes, a musician himself as well as an author and professor, interviewed Springsteen about all that went into Nebraska, how childhood trauma informs the mood of many of the songs, and why Springsteen's story compares neatly to that of Odysseus. The result is Zanes' new book, Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska.Get your copy of Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska wherever books are sold.
