“You're holding your baby too much.” “Just let them cry it out.” “You'll spoil them if you respond every time they cry.”If you've ever heard these words—or wondered yourself whether nurturing your baby too much could backfire—you're not alone. But the science is clear: responding to and connecting with our babies doesn't spoil them; it builds their brains for lifelong emotional resilience and mental health. In this episode of On Health, I'm joined by neuroscientist, doula, and infant sleep specialist Dr. Greer Kirshenbaum, author of The Nurture Revolution: Grow Your Baby's Brain and Transform Their Mental Health. We're diving into:Why babies need co-regulation, not early independenceThe neuroscience behind sleep training—and why much of it conflicts with infant brain developmentHow small, intentional nurturing acts can buffer against stress and even heal intergenerational traumaAnd because so many parents today are raising children without the village we deserve, we'll also talk about what it means to nurture our babies—and ourselves—sustainably. If you've ever felt torn between instinct and conventional parenting advice, this episode will give you clarity, confidence, and science-backed reassurance. In this episode, Max and Matt tackle one of the trickiest challenges of parenting—striking the balance between giving your kids a great life and ensuring they develop gratitude. On the one hand, you want to give them everything you can; on the other, being deprived of something can be a powerful teacher of gratitude. But when you have the means to give your kids what they want, how do you navigate that tension without sounding like a broken record about how good they have it? Max and Matt dive into the complexities of overindulgence and entitlement, discussing the natural ways kids learn and how to avoid pushing them too far into materialism or a lack of work ethic. It's not as simple as just saying, “Be grateful,” and they share their own struggles with finding that delicate balance. Peter Wood emailed about Stubby Shillelaghs: "Hi Mark, I wrote a few years ago about playing the show with my wife in the car on dates and on our wedding day, and now we are expecting our first child. We don't listen to the show together much anymore, but when we go to the Renaissance Faire we played it (just missed you again!) and I put it on when we went for a swim on a summer evening when she wanted music without getting interrupted by YouTube Music ads. Since this year's Renaissance festival she's asked a few times for Tartanic when she's been in the mood for "my" music. Recently I was listening to a different podcast that plays novelty songs around a theme (Bitslap with KBC if you're curious), and the theme of the week was Drinking, so of course some Celtic - sounding music came up, and for part of a set I thought I was listening to your show! Of the two songs in particular that got me confused, the first was the Vodka Song by Stubby Shillelaghs (https://youtu.be/h9YRbJSbPw0) which I'm unsure if it or the band have ever been played on your show. It was followed by Sober on St. Patrick's Day, and at first I thought I might have heard it on your show, but then when it got going I realized it wouldn't have fit in on your family friendly show. Turns out it's by Psychostick. I know you've got ties to the FuMP collective so you're probably already aware of it. The Vodka Song at least would be a fun one to play if you've got the permission." Patrick Rieger emailed photos from Ohio Renaissance Festival: "Hi Marc, My family and I, along with our friend Chenna from Nashville, spent Labor Day Weekend at the Ohio Renaissance Festival, three days of faire. Ohio is a big faire with plenty of celtic musicians, but even with three days we didn't see them all. We did see Captain John Stout (aka Richard Brentar), Donal Hinely, The Harper and the Minstrel, The Toasted Clover, The Jackdaws, Bettina Baudville, Seán Nós, and The Lady Victoria. I had never heard of a nose harmonica until I met Bettina Baudville; that is what she is playing in the photo. Also I never heard celtic music played on a ukulele until I met The Toasted Clover. Donal Hinely was featured on the Renaissance Festival Podcast years ago when you were still a host, but until this year I had not seen or heard him in person." Despite three long days of working the faire, Victoria was able to join us for a quick dinner one night. And before the weekend was done, the four of us already planned to go back next year."
I welcomed Wuhan-based Andrew Shaw onto the CHP to talk about his book. It's all about the plundering of China's cultural treasures and imperial artifacts by not just the British, French, and Americans. It seems everyone got in on the act. Even the local people. It's a miracle there was anything left for Chian's museums. Many of you are familiar with the stories about looting that took place in China between the 1840s and the turn of the century. In Andrew Shaw's book, "Spoil" we'll look at the extent of what happened. And on the next episode, we'll feature Andrew again, this time talking about his new book on the history of jade. That's coming February 16th. Of course, Patreon and CHP Premium subscribers will get to hear it a couple weeks earlier. Here's the link if you're interested. https://www.patreon.com/c/TheChinaHistoryPodcast Amazon Link to "Spoil" by Mr. Andrew Shaw: https://a.co/d/12c6kPF Learn more about your ad choices.
