Moors in America believe that they – and many Black Americans – are descendents of the Moroccan Empire, which they claim once extended all the way from North Africa to North America. This would make Moors indigenous to an America that far predates the United States. But beyond that shared credence, the movement is scattered. Some seek only to practice spiritual beliefs while others maintain that being a Moor means U.S. laws do not apply to them. A few even use their identity as Moors to justify violence, theft, and fraud. Vice News' correspondent Alzo Slade takes us inside the different facets of the Moorish movement, to try and understand the alternate history they believe in, and why the current social and political landscape is making Moorish nationalism more appealing. This episode was produced by Jen Kinney and Sam Greenspan. Last year, Alzo Slade took us to Jamaica, where residents are fighting against mining in the most ecologically sensitive part of the island: Cockpit Country. The Maroons who live there, descendants of indigenous people and formerly enslaved Africans who joined together to fight British colonizers, say mining would destroy their way of life. But this year, the government gave the go-ahead to start mining in Cockpit Country. And the Maroons have filed a lawsuit against the Jamaican government, trying not only to stop the mining, but also to finally get recognition of their sovereignty. This week, we're re-airing last year's episode with an update about the latest court battle. This episode was produced by Jen Kinney. Special thanks to Eric Weinrib, Andrea Davis and Patricio Matos who produced and reported a version of this story for VICE News. You can watch their film at Vice.com, or on Youtube. “Human beings, we are the same, right? Like when you come out of the womb, you need to eat, you need to sleep, you need to pee, you need to shit, and when it comes to emotional needs, you need to feel loved. You need to feel there's compassion, you know? You need to feel significant and of value. And when it comes to like the feeling of significance and feeling valued, I think that's where we start to get into trouble because the same things that you hold of value, I may not in the same way. […] And so if I can engage you and recognize the perspective from which you come, and at least give you an entry level or a human level of respect from the beginning, then the departure point for our engagement is a proper one, as opposed to an antagonistic one.” @alzoslade VICE on Showtime Cheat on Apple Podcasts 15:00 "Moment of Truth: The Day Dr. Christine Blasey Ford Told Her Story About Brett Kavanaugh" (VICE News • Oct 2018 2019) 20:00 "Season 1, Episode 2: India Burning & Russia's Fight Factory" (VICE on Showtime • Apr 2020) 25:00 "Season 1, Episode 5: Quitting WeWork & Losing Ground & Italy's Darkest Hour" (VICE on Showtime • Apr 2020) Learn more about your ad choices. Have you ever wondered about those people in life who don’t play by the rules? Maybe it was the person who looked over your shoulder in that exam. The person who got the job instead of you because they lied on their application or the nice fella on the phone who said he was from the bank and ended up taking all your money. We have a name for these people. We call them cheats. People who cheat the system, largescale cheats, social media cheats. We are fascinated by them. We read about them in paper. Or watch news stories about them on TV. We marvel at their rise and take a weird pleasure in their fall. But do we ever ask what makes these cheats actually do the bad things they do? What makes them cheat? From Somethin’ Else, makers of ‘Power: The Maxwells’ and ‘The Fault Line: Bush, Blair and Iraq’, hosted by storyteller Alzo Slade, ‘Cheat!’ tells the inside stories behind some of the biggest scandals in contemporary history and the flawed protagonists at their heart: controversial and contentious figures from the world of pop culture, business, sport, music, politics. Why do people cheat? Is it ever justifiable? And most importantly are cheats – these people we think of as the dregs of our society – actually not so different from ourselves? A Somethin' Else production.
