Have you ever thought, “maybe I’ve missed my chance.” This weeks diarist started uni three separate times and dropped out every single one. Worked 50-hour weeks in retail management for minimum wage. Genuinely believed that without a degree, there was a limit to what she’d ever earn or achieve. Relatable. Then life happened. A baby. A relocation. A partner changing careers. Another baby. A mortgage. A massive amount of imposter syndrome. But somewhere in the middle of all of that, she met a leader who saw something in her before she could fully see it herself… and everything started to shift. Now she’s 33, earning $140k in HR with no degree, investing for the first time, raising two kids, navigating a very real mortgage, and trying to work out how anyone affords dining chairs without having a small emotional breakdown. This conversation felt really honest. Not in a “perfect with money” way. More in a “figuring it out while life is happening” kind of way. Ep 330: Differentiated Instruction for Multiple Prep Teachers: Plan Once, Not Three Times

On Your Prep Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2026 8:33

Middle and high school teachers juggling multiple preps, let's get real about “differentiated instruction for multiple prep teachers.” Somewhere along the way, most of us were told to plan for the average student—then tack on extensions for high achievers and interventions for strugglers. It sounds smart until you try living it with a full schedule and three, four, or five different classes to prep each day. You're burned out and barely holding it together, all because you're basically writing three versions of every lesson. Host Khristen Massic calls out this outdated advice, and she's got a better way.If you're stuck in the plan-for-the-middle rut, you know what happens: your top students breeze through the work and get bored, the strugglers get lost, and somehow “average” becomes a code word for “meh.” You scramble to come up with side quests for the kids who finish early, and you tape together interventions for those who can't get started at all. That's not differentiated instruction—it's full-blown teacher burnout.Let's flip that script. Host Khristen Massic learned a game-changer after supporting gifted and talented students: if you plan for your top students and then scaffold down, you create one challenge-rich lesson for everyone instead of splitting yourself into three teachers. The magic? Scaffolds turn one complex task into a flexible, differentiated experience—kids who need help use the supports, and kids ready for more ignore them. No more separate packets, no more watered-down busywork, no more grading nightmares across “levels.”Here's a practical glimpse inside Khristen's classroom: when teaching drafting, she used to dole out simplified drawings and cobble together random extra-credit options for fast finishers. But those extensions didn't always connect to the core lesson, and the struggling students ended up with a pile of work that missed the actual learning target. The new way? Everybody gets the complex 3D drawing problem. Students who need support get access to 3D-printed models, enlarged exemplar posters, or step-by-step checklists—any of which they can grab when and if they need them.Scaffolds aren't more work on your part. A checklist or exemplar might take you five minutes to make, rather than hours crafting a whole “extension activity.” Sentence stems, graphic organizers, vocabulary banks, or formula sheets—all optional, all ready when kids reach for them. It's not about lowering the bar; it's about keeping expectations high while honoring where each student is starting. This approach isn't just theory—it's a life raft for multi-prep teachers. You're not lazy for wanting to plan one strong lesson that works for every kid. You're strategic, and you're finally giving yourself the work-life balance you desperately need in the secondary classroom. Instead of grading three assignments on the same concept, you look at the end product and know each student had the chance to show real understanding—with or without the scaffolds, depending on what they needed.Khristen reminds us that when we make the scaffolds optional, we hand responsibility to the students. They get to decide what supports to lean on. You're not stuck labeling or sorting kids in front of the class, and you're not caught in a grading labyrinth. You set the bar high and believe that all kids can meet it when the right steps are in place.Multi-prep teachers: imagine shaving hours off your planning, freeing up your brain space, and finally having the energy to connect with your students, not just shuffle papers for them. Whether you're teaching science, ELA, math, or career/tech, this structure has your back. Pick the real challenge, build in flexible scaffolds, and watch your classroom routines—and your energy—transform for the better. If you've been told that differentiated instruction means reinventing every lesson three times, it's time to toss that myth out for good. One strong, scaffolded lesson gives you your life back and helps every student rise to the challenge.Cut your workload, not your standards. You don't have to choose between being effective and having a life. Plan for the top, scaffold down, and let students show you just how much they can do.Kick the “plan for the middle” advice to the curb—your classroom (and your sanity) deserve better.Too many preps and not enough time? Peter walked on water and sank. Swung a sword in a garden. Denied Jesus three times. And became the rock on which the church was built. Not despite his conflict story. Through it. This is what Vertical Alignment looks like when conflict meets recalibration. There's a man in scripture whose conflict story reads like this entire week. He had the faith to walk on water — and then looked down, saw the waves, and began to sink. Internal conflict. Faith and doubt in the same moment. Later, in a garden, when soldiers came for Jesus, this same man grabbed a sword and cut off a guard's ear. Escalation. Threat response. Protection mode activated. And Jesus — in the middle of his own arrest — stopped to repair. Not just the guard's ear. But Peter. And then, days later, after the pressure built in ways Peter wasn't prepared to hold, he denied Jesus. Three times in a single night. The rupture. The thing that could have ended everything. But that's not where the story ends. After the resurrection, Jesus found Peter on a beach and asked him three times: Do you love me? Not as punishment for the three denials. As recalibration. Three opportunities to return. And Peter — the man who lost himself in conflict more publicly than most of us ever will — became the rock on which the church was built. Not despite his conflict story. Through it.In this episode you'll sit with:• Peter's full conflict arc mapped to this week's pathway — recognition, release, reclamation, reinforcement, renewed momentum • Why Jesus didn't ask Peter to fix his conflict response before giving him foundational work • The beach conversation as recalibration — three denials, three invitations to return • How we approach God the same way we approach conflict — with defense, withdrawal, or over-explanation • What becomes available when you're willing to be met in the middle of your conflict story rather than waiting until you've mastered itToday's Micro Recalibration:Think about the conflict pattern you've been carrying this week. Ask: What would it mean to bring this to God — not as something to fix before you arrive, but as something to be met inside of? Peter, do you love me? Not: have you fixed your pattern? Just: do you love me? When you can answer that honestly, simply, without the thousand-word explanation — that's when the work becomes available.Explore Identity-Level Recalibration→ Schedule a conversation with Julie to see if The Recalibration is a fit for you→ Learn about The Recalibration Cohort→ Join the next Friday Recalibration Live experience → Take your listening deeper! They get into what it means to own your decisions publicly when the whole world is watching, why staying in a broken marriage doesn't protect your children — it just teaches them what dysfunction looks like — and why will he choose me? might be the wrong question altogether. Carolina says it best: it's less about you than you think. She means that as a mercy, not a dismissal.SUBMIT YOUR OWN STORYhttps://www.theotherwomanandthewife.com/submitHOW WE CAN HELPApply for 1:1 Coaching: https://towtw.com/coachingOUR LINKSWebsite: https://towtw.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theowandthewife/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theowandthewife

THREE TIMES FREE: FROM COMMUNIST CUBA TO SPIRITUAL FREEDOM - RAMON GARCIA'S INCREDIBLE TRUE STORYThree Times Free: Autobiographical Story by Ramon GarciaThe true story and odyssey of a man who wanted to attain his freedom at all costs. It takes him through a perilous voyage at sea, during which he would rather face the possibility of death than remain enslaved by a totalitarian regime. In the course of this book, his liberty will be challenged and will cost the teller of this passionate story, Ramon Garcia, to have to recuperate not only his independence but also something much more important, his spiritual freedom, conquered minute by minute behind the bars of several prisons.Garcia's testimony takes us through intense moments of struggles, missteps, and redemption in a volume full of experiences almost novelesque, but which are the detailed account of a significant revelation that we may share with the enjoyment of this reading."That is why I am three times free, but not as those with liberty as a pretext to do wrong, but as a servant of God."The book Three Times Free: Autobiographical Story is a powerful memoir chronicling my life journey—from my daring escape from communist Cuba in 1963 to building a new life in the United States, and ultimately finding profound spiritual freedom through faith in God. It details the hardships under Castro's regime, the courage required to flee oppression, the challenges of starting over as an immigrant, my success in the jewelry business, and how true liberation comes not just from physical freedom but from surrendering to God's grace. The title reflects three layers of freedom: escaping political tyranny, achieving personal and economic independence in America, and attaining spiritual redemption. This book is dedicated to my three children and seven grandchildren (two granddaughters and one grandson). My oldest daughter is 54, my other daughter is 49, and my youngest son is 46. They were born in the United States and have never known the horrors of communism—the constant hunger, rationing, fear of imprisonment for dissent, or the total loss of personal liberty that I endured. In Cuba under that system, food was scarce, opportunities were crushed, and the government controlled every aspect of life; disobedience often meant jail or worse. My children and grandchildren have been blessed with freedom, abundance, and opportunity here in America—things I fought desperately to reach. Through this book, I want them to understand the true cost of the freedom they enjoy every day, so they never take it for granted. Thank God for the United States, the land that gave me a second chance.Yes, this is my first published work. At 82 years old (born in February 1944 in Barros Oriente, Cuba), I've finally put my story on paper after a lifetime of living it.It took several years to complete the book, as I wanted to ensure every detail was accurate and meaningful. Writing it involved reflecting deeply on painful memories, family stories, and spiritual insights, but the process was rewarding and healing.THREE TIMES FREEhttps://tharsisfilms.comhttps://www.kingpagespress.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/31926kpp2.mp3

Friday the 13th is BACK. And not just once this year, baby witches, but THREE TIMES. Yes, 2026 is absolutely unhinged and we should all be afraid. This week, Alicia and Terra are cracking open the folklore, the fear, and the full chaotic history of the most infamous date on the Gregorian Calendar. We're talking Norse mythology and the death of Baldr (yes, Loki is involved, obviously). We're talking the Last Supper, triskaidekaphobia, and why the number 13 has been considered cursed since at least the 1400s. We're talking real Friday the 13th disasters, including the 1972 Andes plane crash and the 2012 Costa Concordia shipwreck, because apparently this date has notes. And then we zoom out: Tuesday the 13th, the Ides of March, Italy's fear of the number 17, and the 1980 slasher film that turned a spooky superstition into a full cultural institution. Is Friday the 13th genuinely cursed? A Christian holdover? A Norse myth remix? A media invention? It's all of the above, and we couldn't be more delighted. Three Fridays the 13th in one year. Stay vigilant. Hosted by Alicia Herder and Terra Keck. Produced by Marcel Pérez. Creative Directing by Mallory Jordan. Music by Kevin MacLeod. Official Witch, Yes! Discord! Witch, Yes! on Patreon!
