With a career that began in the attractions industry at Cedar Point, Tyler brings decades of experience in guest services, marketing, and operations. At Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky, he now leads one of the most immersive brand-based visitor experiences in the spirits industry. Buffalo Trace is not only a functioning distillery but also a destination attracting over 700,000 visitors annually. In this interview, Tyler talks about bourbon as an attraction, creating connections with consumers, and recovering before the crisis starts. Bourbon as an Attraction “A lot of our visitors say this was like an adult Disneyland for them.” Tyler describes the Buffalo Trace Distillery as a pilgrimage destination for bourbon enthusiasts. While some visitors may arrive with no prior interest in spirits, many leave with a deep appreciation for the experience. The distillery is steeped in history, with active production taking place on a site that has been distilling for hundreds of years. Unlike fabricated environments, guests witness the genuine operations, including forklifts and barrel transport, as part of their tour. This authenticity, paired with complimentary tastings and educational touchpoints, creates a unique environment where bourbon is not just a beverage—it's the centerpiece of a full-fledged attraction experience. The sensory immersion of walking through historic warehouses and experiencing the sounds and aromas of production connects guests to the brand in a meaningful way. Tyler highlights how guests often leave with a deeper understanding, even if they never become bourbon drinkers. This inclusive approach—paired with tangible takeaways like handcrafted items made from retired barrels—turns Buffalo Trace into a destination that mirrors the magic of traditional theme parks, but with the cultural and historic significance of Kentucky bourbon. Creating Connections with Consumers “Our whole mission is to create connections with our consumers to bring a brand to life.” At Buffalo Trace, the visitor experience is part of the marketing department—deliberately designed to transform consumers into brand advocates. Tyler compares the distillery to other brand homes like World of Coke or the Guinness Storehouse, but emphasizes that Buffalo Trace offers something distinct: authenticity without theming. Rather than a stylized walkthrough, guests engage with the actual production process in real time. These interactions create deep brand loyalty and foster connections not only between the brand and consumers, but also among guests themselves. Tyler notes that many visitors bond with each other during their tours, united by a shared passion. The distillery encourages storytelling, with team members who listen and respond to guests' personal narratives. Through elements like bourbon tastings and handcrafted woodcrafts, visitors leave with more than just a souvenir—they leave with a story and a relationship to the brand. Recovering Before the Crisis Starts “We were preparing for it. And we got to the point where we did everything we could… and actually started planning for recovery.” In early 2024, Buffalo Trace experienced a major flood due to record water levels in the Kentucky River. Tyler shares how the team used forecasting models to anticipate the crisis before it fully struck, allowing them to shift into recovery mode even before the peak flooding occurred. This proactive approach enabled them to reopen in phases—first with pop-up tastings, followed by partial retail access, and eventually full tours. Tyler emphasizes that the key to their successful recovery was collaboration and communication. The leadership team divided responsibilities based on both timing and physical space. Some team members focused on immediate cleanup, while others strategized for future phases of reopening. Communication was also prioritized across all 200 team members, including live video broadcasts and daily updates to ensure transparency. Tyler believes this level of engagement—both internally and externally—was not only critical to recovery, but also a reflection of the brand's value of authenticity. The crisis became a real-time demonstration of Buffalo Trace's commitment to its people and guests. Send us a textWe revisit bourbon history with a special tasting of a 1981 Old Taylor bourbon, which reveals the fascinating journey of this historic brand from Colonel EH Taylor through National Distillers to Jim Beam and eventually back to Buffalo Trace.• Old Taylor transitioned from its original distillery (now Castle & Key) to Jim Beam production in the 1970s• This 1981 bottle represents the Jim Beam era when they used their 75% corn/13% rye/12% barley mash bill• Despite being only 86 proof and 6 years old, this dusty bottle achieves a perfect 18/18 on our rating system• The profile features burnt caramel corn and candy sweetness with an unexpected maple syrup finish• Buffalo Trace (Sazerac) eventually purchased the brand back in 2009, bringing it full circle• Middle West Spirits gets a brief mention for their unique weeded bourbon offerings• Upcoming events include Walker's farewell party at Amore Restaurant on May 9th• We'll be visiting Old Homestead, Spirits of French Lick, and Old Carter in upcoming travels• The Steel Valley Bourbon Association will host a dinner featuring our barrel pickJoin us next week for our special Derby podcast where we'll discuss Old Forrester, Brown-Forman and Woodford Reserve's connections to the Kentucky Derby.A sip of bourbon history awaits as we uncork a treasured 1981 Old Taylor – a 200ml time capsule gifted for my 60th birthday that connects us to bourbon's fascinating past. This dusty bottle represents a unique moment in Kentucky whiskey history when Jim Beam owned the legendary brand created by Colonel EH Taylor Jr., the father of modern bourbon and champion of the 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act.The journey of Old Taylor weaves through Kentucky's bourbon landscape – from Taylor's original distillery (now Castle & Key) through National Distillers during Prohibition, eventually landing at Jim Beam in 1972 where this particular bottle was produced using their classic 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley recipe. What makes this tasting extraordinary is experiencing how a modest 86-proof, six-year bourbon from four decades ago delivers exceptional quality that rivals today's premium offerings. Our Old Louisville Whiskey Company Barrel Bottle Breakdown reveals a perfect 18/18 score with remarkable tasting notes: burnt caramel corn aromatics, candy-like sweetness on the palate, and a surprising maple syrup finish that lingers impressively. The viscosity and mouthfeel defy its modest proof, creating an experience that transcends time and connects us directly to bourbon's golden era before the modern whiskey boom. For bourbon enthusiasts, these dusty treasures offer more than nostalgic sipping – they provide perspective on how distillation, aging, and blending techniques have evolved while highlighting the consistent craftsmanship that defines Kentucky's signature spirit. Whether you're a seasoned collector or curious newcomer, seeking out these liquid time capsules offers a unique window into bourbon's rich heritage.Join us next week for our special Derby podcast where we'll explore the deep connections between Old Forrester, Brown-Forman, Woodford Reserve and Kentucky's most famous horse race. UPCOMING EVENT: Access Louisville Live presented by Baird. Be on hand for a live recording of the Access Louisville podcast April 22. Details and registration here.Sometimes Mother Nature just has our number — and that's certainly been true so far in 2025. On this week's Access Louisville podcast we discuss the loss of Thunder Over Louisville — which is being canceled this year because of flooding. On a normal Thunder, about half a million people line the banks of both sides of the river. Kentucky Derby Festival pegs the Thunder economic impact at more than $120 million, while Louisville Tourism charts it at $10 million. A Louisville Tourism spokesperson detailed that their number only accounts for direct economic impact (and excluding things like sponsorship or advertising dollars or TV rights). On this week's show, we also discuss how the flooding has impacted businesses including The Galt House, Captains Quarters and Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort. After the flooding talk, we discuss work beginning on a project at the Kentucky Expo Center. Crews will begin demolishing parts of the existing center, including Newmarket Hall. The cleared space will pave the way for Phase I of the project, which is a new 350,000-square-foot multipurpose building designed to expand and redefine event capabilities at the facility. Additionally, we chat about Louisville Metro Government taking preliminary steps to restore Louisville Gardens. The city is planning to do exterior demolition around the entrance of the building at 525 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. And, lastly, Reporter Stephen P. Schmidt is on the show to discuss the latest on how tariffs will affect Kentucky's signature bourbon industry. Tariffs were causing wild fluctuations on Wall Street this week. But they're also something the bourbon industry has been talking about for far longer, including at LBF's recent Bourbonomics event.Access Louisville, sponsored by Baird, is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. It's available on popular podcast services including Apple Podcasts and Spotify (which are linked above.)

The team discusses how Stagg has become more accessible in Ohio and beyond, with multiple 2024 batches (A through D) hitting shelves this year.Perhaps most intriguing is the comparison between standard Stagg and George T. Lee lives on through his namesake single barrel bourbon, where we compare the newest 2025 release with a 2019 bottle to explore how this iconic whiskey maintains its high standards over time.• Elmer T. Lee was Buffalo Trace's fourth master distiller who revolutionized bourbon by launching Blanton's in 1984 as the first modern single barrel bourbon• The 2025 Elmer T. Lee delivers exceptional nose with caramel, vanilla, and oak notes, scoring 15/18 in our barrel bottle breakdown• Comparing 2019 vs 2025 releases shows the newer bottle has more pronounced flavors while the older release has mellowed into an easier-drinking experience• Elmer sought bourbon with vanilla notes, smooth taste, and no harsh aftertaste – qualities still present in today's releases• At 90 proof, Elmer T. Lee drinks well above its proof point with excellent viscosity and flavor complexity• Both releases showcase classic bourbon characteristics with the 2025 bringing more vibrant, attention-commanding flavorsJoin us on our Kentucky distillery tour as we visit Maker's Mark and Jack Daniel's in the coming days, with live updates planned throughout the journey. The enduring legacy of bourbon pioneer Elmer T. Lee takes center stage as we crack open the new 2025 release of his namesake single barrel bourbon. This exploration celebrates the man who revolutionized the industry by introducing Blanton's in 1984 as the first modern single barrel bourbon brand. The 2025 Elmer T. Lee immediately impresses with an exceptional nose that evokes vintage, dusty bourbons—rich caramel, perfect vanilla balance, and just the right amount of oak with zero ethanol burn. At 90 proof, this bourbon drinks well above its strength, offering remarkable complexity and a viscosity that creates beautiful, long-lasting legs in the glass. The flavor profile delivers everything Elmer himself sought when selecting barrels: pronounced vanilla-forward notes, smooth mouthfeel, and a balanced finish without harsh burn. What makes this tasting particularly fascinating is the side-by-side comparison with a 2019 bottle. While both expressions showcase the classic Elmer T. Lee character, the 2025 release presents more vibrant, attention-commanding flavors, while the 2019 has mellowed into an exceptionally smooth, approachable pour. This comparison highlights the subtle variations between single barrels selected years apart, while confirming the consistent quality standards established by the master distiller himself.Through rare interview footage, we hear Elmer describe his selection process in his own words, providing invaluable context for appreciating his bourbon legacy. For anyone fortunate enough to secure a bottle at its retail price of approximately $80, this expression delivers exceptional value and a direct connection to bourbon history. Lee continues to represent everything special about Kentucky's native spirit.voice over Whiskey Thief If You Have Gohsts Add for SOFLSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com

The guys were joined by special guest Freddie Johnson at an event hosted by the Bourbon Podcast to raise money for bulletproof vests for police K-9's. Here's some background on Freddie Johnson and what he means in the world of bourbon: Freddie Johnson is a third generation employee at Buffalo Trace Distillery and serves as its Distillery VIP Visitor Lead. Born in Paris, KY (Bourbon County), he spent some of his early childhood summers in the mountains of Breathitt County with his maternal grandfather who was a coal miner and friend to the moonshiners. The family moved to Frankfort, KY when he was five. Freddie enjoyed hunting, fishing and hanging out with his paternal grandfather, Jimmy Johnson Sr., and father, Jimmy Johnson Jr., at what is now known as Buffalo Trace Distillery. Freddie was in the middle of a successful career as a network/operations engineer in Atlanta, GA when he put all of it aside to fulfill a promise made to his father, Jimmy, more than 20 years earlier. He had promised his father that he would work at the Distillery during his lifetime so they could say they had three generations of the Johnson family that worked at Buffalo Trace. Freddie took early retirement and moved back to care for his father and brother. Jimmy got him a job as a tour guide at the Distillery in 2002 but Freddie has been in and around the Distillery since he was five years old. Freddie weaves together his childhood memories with the Distillery's rich history as his entertains thousands each year in various tours around Buffalo Trace. One of the Distillery's most popular and highly sought after tour guides, Freddie is the recipient of the 2015 ROSE (Recognition of Service Excellence) Award, the 2017 Lexington (Ky) Hospitality Award and was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2018.

About WAREHOUSE H: The Story of Blanton's Bourbon, America's Most Influential Whiskey The popularity of bourbon whiskey in America is at an all-time high. Over the past decade it has seen exponential growth and popularity. Legions of new fans are drawn to the spirit every year. What accounts for this growth? It can be traced—at least in part—to the 1984 introduction of Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey. Bourbon, a specific type of whiskey, is a distinctive product of the United States. Legally it can only be produced in America. During its previous heyday in the 1950s through 1960s it was the most popular distilled spirit in America. As the 1970s ushered in, the market collapsed, and bourbon sales plummeted as consumers turned to “lighter and whiter” spirits such as vodka and gin. Throughout the next 30 years the industry struggled, and distilleries were shuttered. Nobody wanted bourbon. The introduction of Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey in 1984 was historic. As the first single-barrel bourbon, it is bottled one barrel at a time as opposed to first mixing together multiple barrels. It helped define a new “super-premium” category for bourbon, where only the choicest barrels are selected and bottled. One author called the creation of Blanton's "the whiskey equivalent of a Hail Mary pass." Together with other super-premium brands launched in the years following Blanton's debut, they sowed the seeds of a 21st-century bourbon boom that saved the American whiskey industry from near collapse. Dominic Guglielmi is widely considered one of the most prolific and knowledgeable collectors of Blanton's bourbon. He has amassed a nearly unrivaled collection of known Blanton's releases, including nearly all extremely rare and limited bottles that have been produced. He has worked to document the brand's history through his website www.warehouseh.com. Warehouse H is Guglielmi's homage to Blanton's, capturing the story of the brand as it has never been told before, and chronicling all things Blanton's from its birth to the present day.

This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes a ride to to explore Buffalo Trace Distillery and chat with Dominic Guglielmi, author of Warehouse H: The Story of Blanton's Bourbon, America's Most Influential Whiskey. Dominic tells listeners about his journey from being the ultimate Blanton's Tater and collecting everything ever produced with a horse on top of a bottle to writing his amazing book. Warehouse H is the ultimate guide of the original single barrel bourbon. With history, education and icon photos, this is one amazing read. Big Chief starts the show by sipping on Blanton's single barrel and Dom cracks open a Blanton's Japanese gold. To close out the first half the big man pours a Takara black label that is 80 proof. It reminds him of Irish whiskey. Big Chief starts the second half with Blanton's Gold, while Dom sips on a straight from the barrel. The big man then moves onto a straight from three barrel himself. To close out the show Big Chief cracks a sample of Blanton's from 1988. To him it has notes of freshly roasted peanuts. Nice and tasty. This ride on The Whiskey Trip showcases one man's love and passion for Blanton's Bourbon. Cheers to being this committed.

Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. is known as the father of the modern day bourbon industry. Not only is he a central figure in creation of what we now know and love as the Buffalo Trace Distillery, but he was also instrumental in the passing of the Bottled-in-Bond Act and even served as Mayor of Frankfort for 16 years. Though his beloved "EH Taylor" label has been owned by many different distilleries over the years, Sazerac purchased the label in 2009, effectively bringing Taylor home. This week, the guys uncork the once a year release of EH Taylor Barrel Proof Bourbon. This is the 12th release of its kind and clocks in at a whopping 131.1 proof. Will this bourbon be "hot to be hot" or will it delight our senses? Preston is the fourth generation member of the Van Winkle family to enter into the bourbon business. He is the great grandson of iconic bourbon maker Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr. and son of current Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery President, Julian P. Van Winkle, III. Preston grew up in the post Stitzel-Weller era of Van Winkle bourbon production, exploring his father's bottling hall and barrel warehouse in Lawrenceburg, KY, occasionally helping with the bottling and labeling. Preston graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2001 and immediately started working for his father. Initially he split time between the Louisville office and the Lawrenceburg bottling facility where he often processed bourbon for bottling and ran the bottling line as Julian had for the previous 20 plus years. In 2002 the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery partnered with the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY, freeing up Julian and Preston from production duties enabling them to focus on the sales and marketing of the brands. Preston assumed the role of Marketing Manager for Old Rip Van Winkle and has worked since then to help manage and market the Van Winkle brands.

This episode features Drew Mayville of Buffalo Trace and Sazerac. When Drew was originally looking for work he applied to a brewery and a distillery. The distillery turned out to be Seagram's. In hind sight this was his best move. He began in the distillery lab. After many years of working in different areas he was promoted to the Master Blender. We discuss his role at Buffalo Trace and some of the nuances for being a Master Blender. His first priority is being responsible for the consistency and quality of the spirit that goes into every bottle. Drew is always looking to make a better whiskey with Sazerac's Buffalo Trace Distillery. Today he's transitioning into being more of an ambassador and educating people about the products. After the interview, The Master Blender led us through a master class on some of Buffalo Trace's most coveted expressions. Almost 200 plus in attendance at Roger Wilco were grateful for this once in a lifetime experience. www.BuffaloTrace.com - www.Sazerac.com - Instagram Be sure to support our sponsor Brewscuits and use the code fa2024 at checkout for 15% off your entire order. We discuss the history of evangelicalism with Isaac B. Sharp. Or rather, the alternative history of evangelicalism, for it differs in some significant ways from what you may have heard about how evangelicalism in America developed, and how most of us understand what it is today. Would it surprise you to learn there were once proud theologically liberal evangelicals? That there was a time when being evangelical did not obviously imply a conservative political stance or being white or straight? If so, Sharp's analysis in his book The Other Evangelicals will give helpful context to why that seems strange to us now (hint: it wasn't accidental). The bourbon we taste in this episode is George T. Stagg from Buffalo Trace Distillery. To skip the tasting, go to 8:09. You can find the transcript for this episode here.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon.
