It started innocently enough when Kurt drove by a parking lot full of fire trucks, lights flashing, but no fire. And it got them thinking, what % of a firefighters day is actually spent fighting fires? (Answer given in the episode.) From there, Jon and Kurt decided it would make a fun game show to ask each other to guess what the % answer was to interesting questions….like what % of people pee in the shower? What % of people say they always read the Terms & Conditions (90%), what % of people send their pets Valentine's Day gifts? Well, you get the idea. What % of listeners will enjoy this episode (100%)?

Alonzo Bodden is a comedian and actor. He won Last Comic Standing (Season 3), he's a regular on the NPR show “Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me,” and that's barely touching his resume. I've known Alonzo for a long time and always loved crossing paths with him. I get to know a bit more about the man behind the content in this episode, though we definitely dive into the weeds of the current state of affairs. Tough not to.

Veteran comedian Paula Poundstone loves Ring Dings, her favorite little chocolate snack cakes only sold in a handful of East Coast states. She once told a very skeptical Michael Pollan, on NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, that they are her reason for living. So host Rachel Belle interviews the pastry chef/owner of The Ring Ding Bar in New York City, a bakery that’s recreated the confection with “real ingredients” in 25 flavors. Paula talks about how she lived on a Greyhound bus in the 80s, when she didn’t have enough money for motels, why you should read the recipe on the marshmallow fluff jar very carefully, and why Dick Van Dyke will most likely never have dinner at Paula’s house again. Hari Kondabolu has never been afraid to talk about sensitive topics on stage. The veteran comedian, who has appeared on Conan, Kimmel, Letterman, and NPR's Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me mined material about race, immigration, and other societal hot button issues. But unlike some comedians, he was hesitant to discuss himself and in particular the depression that has followed him for years. He goes there in this interview that also includes exploration of panic attacks, the ups and downs of therapy, and how Seattle helped him become who he wanted to be.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Hey there, hero!Sometimes, words come together to describe things that you don't expect. In a recent session with a coaching peer, she declared:"Every thing is everything."I tried to process that, and she gave me some assistance. What she meant was that as creatives, every thing we learn as performers in ANY category of work helps to build everything we do as actors and voice talent in ALL categories. In other words, if you get better at something in one area, it's going to help you be better at that thing in all areas.Example: if you learn to control and influence your vocal volume on camera, you'll be better at that vocal work on stage, and in the voice booth.Another: if you learn to give yourself permission to be less forced and more casual with your lines in a commercial (because it serves the story), you'll be able to pull off that same move in an audiobook or a video game.(We build a whole course around this concept in VOHeroes Pro, called Mutual Muscles. It's powerful stuff.)After you watch this episode, would you agree? Have you found this to be true? Has it helped you be a better actor? Jennifer Mills joined the conversation as well. She's a writer for "Wait Wait" and a Minnesota native. Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.
