Today, we're diving deep into the raw, unfiltered reality of motherhood with writer, art historian and author of US national bestseller The Motherload, Sarah Hoover. You might know her from her sharp wit and searing honesty online, but in this conversation, Sarah opens up in a way that's deeply personal and profoundly important. From the trauma of her birth experience to the quiet devastation of postpartum depression, she walks us through what it really means to become a mother in a world that still doesn't know how to care for women.Sarah's story isn't just about pain—it's also about reclaiming agency, finding your voice after silence, and daring to say the things so many women feel but are too afraid to speak out loud. This week is Maternal Mental Health Week, and many organizations are joining us in being as loud as possible to spread the word that these conditions do exist, that mothers need support, and that resources are available. Sharing people's stories on this podcast is how I help spread the message, and today's episode focuses on Sarah's motherhood story and the memoir she has written to help others. Join us! Sarah Hoover is a writer, cultural critic, and former Gagosian director whose work spans art, fashion, motherhood, and feminism. She just released a new book, The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood, a beautiful, vulnerable, raw, and very real story of her motherhood experience. Her writing highlights some ways that we, as a society, are failing mothers, and Sarah's writing shares what she went through in her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. Her debut memoir is a darkly funny, unfiltered critique of modern motherhood, praised by Oprah Daily as a “long overdue reality check.” After earning degrees from NYU and Columbia, Sarah built a career in the art world before turning to writing. Her essays on motherhood, identity, and cultural expectations have appeared in multiple publications, and she is the co-founder of the accelerator committee at American Valley Theater, in addition to serving on the board of the Art Production Fund. She makes her home in Manhattan with her husband and two children. Show Highlights: Sarah's story of her first pregnancy triggered memories and disconnection from her baby A “perfect storm of triggers”! Sarah's situation: She wasn't enjoying anything about motherhood and lied to everyone with parroted responses about being “fine.” Rebuilding her identity without her career Instead of joy, Sarah felt depleted, stuck, and unseen. A breakdown of Sarah's relationship with her mother and her views of motherhood Finding support and help—finally! Huge gaps in the questionnaire for postpartum moms—we can do better! Breaking down the wall of shame to be honest and vulnerable It's healthy to complain! Share your feelings! Healing and finding connection with her son Sarah's second pregnancy, when she was determined to do things differently and advocate for herself An overview of Sarah's book—it's not just for moms! Lesly brings us three books about mothers across genres: All the Other Mothers Hate Me, a mystery novel by Sarah Harman; The Motherload, a memoir by Sarah Hoover; and Mothers and Sons, a literary fiction novel by Adam Haslett.
Today we are revisiting one of my fav episodes, with Sarah Hoover talking all about her incredible memoir, "The Motherload: Episodes From The Brink Of Motherhood". We have an honest conversation about the life-changing experience of motherhood, while pushing back against the rosy narrative we've been sold. Whether you are a mom, about to become a mom, or thinking about becoming a mom, this episode is for you!
In this episode, I had an engaging conversation with Sarah Hoover, an author and former art director, about her personal journey through motherhood and the challenges of postpartum depression, as detailed in her book "Motherload." We explored the misconceptions surrounding the instant bond between mother and child, as Sarah candidly shared her own struggles with disconnection and depression after giving birth. Her relationship with her husband, artist Tom Sachs, added another layer to our discussion, as he encouraged her to be brutally honest in her writing, even if it meant portraying him negatively. Sarah's insights were both relatable and thought-provoking, making this episode a powerful exploration of the realities many women face in their journey through motherhood.Timestamps:00:00:00 - Introduction to Sarah Hoover00:00:26 - Motherload and Postpartum Experience00:06:55 - Expectations vs. Reality of Motherhood00:30:46 - Joining RHONY? Sarah Hoover knows her new memoir, “The Motherload,” isn't flattering. She's made peace with the fact that “people will judge me on the internet,” as she says on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas. She's telling her story anyway because she believes an honest rendering of modern motherhood is necessary. “In my defense, birth and motherhood did not match up to the narrative I'd been fed, and it felt like a nasty trick,” she writes. “And while my mental breakdown was embarrassing at times, especially considering how it exposed me as a puerile and spoiled little fool, it also showed how pernicious it is to sell tales of motherhood as being so wonderful and feminine, the very essence of womanhood.” Hoover's memoir is brutally honest about the disassociation and rage she felt the year after her son was born, and how her eventual diagnosis of postpartum depression felt like like both a relief and a betrayal. She joined host Kerri Miller on this week's show to talk about the taboos of motherhood, the trad wife trend and why she was compelled to go public with her story. Guest: Sarah Hoover's new memoir is “The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood.” She lives in New York with her husband and two children. Also, Colin Jost joins for a fun game of “The Great Debate,” where some of the hottest internet topics are argued over. Plus, the story behind a wonderful organization in New York that's making the world a sweeter place. And, Sarah Hoover stops by to talk about her debut memoir, The Motherload, where she gives an honest and refreshing look at motherhood.
Debut author Sarah Hoover joins Zibby to discuss THE MOTHERLOAD, an unflinchingly honest and brutally funny motherhood memoir that turns the ecstatic narrative women have been fed on its head. Sarah reflects on her harrowing journey through postpartum depression, navigating identity shifts, new motherhood, marriage challenges, and a complex relationship with her own mother. She shares how the trauma of childbirth and her struggle to find herself in the New York art world inspired her to write a book she wished she'd had during her darkest moments. She also reflects on the joy she now feels in her relationship with her son and offers heartfelt advice for new moms.Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/4h95sMBShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens!
