A US vote of confidence in Lebanon?

Despite the Trump administration's 90-day freeze on foreign aid, the State Department announced it was unfreezing $95 million in military assistance to Lebanon. The move is seen as a vote of confidence from the US in the new political order emerging in Lebanon, and in its efforts to continue to degrade Hezbollah. Steven Howard, the Director of Policy and Outreach at the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL), and Sean Mathews, a journalist for the Middle East Eye covering the Middle East, North Africa and the Balkans, join Thanos Davelis to break down why these funds matter for Lebanon, which is looking to rebuild after years of crises, and for the region. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:US green lights $95 million in aid for Lebanon's armyTrump administration approves $95m in aid to Lebanon's militaryUS secretary of state hails Nicosia's strategic roleEU leaders holding emergency meeting in Brussels on defense, UkraineEmergency EU summit seeks to bolster defence to counter US pivot from alliance

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to visit Lebanon in the coming days, an important diplomatic move that underscores Greece's commitment to fostering stability and security in the region. It would also make Mitsotakis the first EU leader - as Kathimerini notes - to visit Lebanon since a ceasefire was reached between Israel and Hezbollah. Steven Howard, the Director of Policy and Outreach at the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL), joins Thanos Davelis ahead of this visit to look at the current situation on the ground in Lebanon, what to expect from the new US administration here, and how Greece and Cyprus can be helpful as we consider Lebanon's future. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Mitsotakis' Beirut visit signals intentPM Mitsotakis postpones Lebanon visit due to aircraft malfunctionTrump picks Massad Boulos to serve as adviser on Arab, Middle Eastern affairsExclusive: Blinken wants to give successor Rubio the 'strongest hand' possibleChristodoulides, Trump reaffirm commitment for strengthened Cyprus-US tiesNew SYRIZA leader aims for party overhaul

We go through the diplomatic failures, the formation of Israeli and Palestinian national identities, the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush era efforts to bring about a political solution, the 2000 Camp David Summit and its controversies, the ongoing Occupation by Israel of Palestinian territories since 1967, the BDS movement and why Hussein considers "Divestment" to be where activists should focus their energies as opposed to "Boycott" and "Sanctions", the two-state solution vs. the one-state solution, riparian rights (ie: issues related to water) concerns related to a two-state solution, the rise and fall of the American Task Force on Palestine, Condoleezza Rice's forgotten approach to Israel/Palestine in the Bush years, Elliot Abrams and how pushes for a two-state solution have been diminished by shifting focuses of administrations over the years, Israeli and Palestinian competing narratives over 1948 (for one it meant independence; for another it meant destruction and the "Nakba" or "Catastrophe"), Hamas and the psychology of rage in Gaza, the Israeli operation in Rafah, cycles of violence, Israeli obstinance and the one-state reality, Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud Party, the Gaza War, terrorism and how Israel's current approach is creating a recruitment boom for Hamas, the power asymmetry in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), the potentially for explosive violence in the West Bank to lead to an ethnic cleansing campaign, and much, much more. Earlier this month, the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research released a poll of Palestinian attitudes—attitudes towards Israel, towards Hamas, towards the Palestinian Authority, about the Hamas attacks of October 7, about the conduct of the war since that time, and more. The findings are eye-opening. Asked if the October 7 attacks were the right thing to do, in light of all that's happened since, 72% of Palestinians think they were. A further 85% said that they have not seen the videos of the October 7 attacks, and the vast majority do not believe that Hamas committed the atrocities that the videos show. Meanwhile, 66% of Palestinian respondents do not support the idea of a two-state solution. Approximately the same number, 63% of Palestinian respondents, believes that armed struggle is the best means of achieving, in the words of the poll, “an end to the occupation and the building of an independent state.” Ghaith al-Omari is a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the former executive director of the American Task Force on Palestine, and served as an advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team during the 1999–2001 permanent-status talks (in addition to holding various other positions within the Palestinian Authority). Here, in conversation with Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver, he breaks down some of this data and offers historical and political context for it. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. When the Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, Salt Lake City earned the nickname “Crossroads of the West.” Today, Utah rightfully claims the title as the “Crossroads of the World.” Our residents speak 137 languages, helping us sell products around the globe. To enhance our international outreach and welcome our state's foreign-born population, earlier this month the Salt Lake Chamber joined together with Go Utah, the World Trade Center Utah, and the state's Economic Development Corporation to convene, for the first time, Utah's New Americans Task Force. This statewide effort builds upon work started six years ago by Salt County and the Salt Lake Chamber to help the newest members of our nation. Nearly 260,000 people now living in Utah were born in another country. Others have fled persecutions and wars in Eastern Europe and Africa to build new lives in Utah. According to the latest data, Utah's newest Americans paid over one billion dollars in federal taxes last year and added nearly six-hundred million dollars in state and local taxes. As they thrive, we all thrive, which is the purpose of the New Americans Task Force – to help us grow together. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Hezbollah and its political allies have intensified Lebanon's political crisis and paralyzed the new government by trying to push the cabinet to dismiss Tarek Bitar, the judge in charge of investigating the 2020 Beirut blast. Last week, on October 14, clashes erupted in Lebanon's capital city over the probe into the explosion of Beirut's port, with deadly shootings taking place at a demonstration organized by Hezbollah and its ally the Amal movement. The incidents were described in reports as being reminiscent of moments from the bloody 1975-90 Lebanese Civil War. Steven Howard joins The Greek Current to discuss this latest incident, what's at stake for Lebanon, and look at what steps Washington can take to support the country.Steven Howard is the Director of Policy and Outreach for the American Task Force on Lebanon, a leadership organization of Americans of Lebanese descent.Read Steven Howard's latest piece in Providence Magazine here: Firefight on Beirut Streets Is a Warning to US and LebanonYou can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here: Hezbollah's campaign against Beirut blast judge paralyses Lebanon's governmentHezbollah brag of 100,000-strong force aimed at foes at homeEU says Turkey still 'backsliding' on reforms, gloomy on membership chancesAfter critical EU report, Turkey's bid to join bloc remains at a 'standstill'

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's visit to the White House this week is a timely reminder of potentially new political dynamics in Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Israeli has just exited the whirlwind of four elections in two years, replacing long-serving Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu with an extraordinarily diverse coalition. Meanwhile, the PA has postponed its first planned election since 2006 and is still led by President Mahmoud Abbas, who is reportedly eighty-six years old. For Israel, the question is whether the new government can survive the formidable challenges looming at home and abroad. For the Palestinians, many are wondering who will succeed Abbas and what will happen the day after he leaves the scene. To answer these questions, David Makovsky closes season 3 of Decision Points with political experts Ben Caspit, Tal Schneider, Ghaith al-Omari, and Ibrahim Dalalsha. Ben Caspit is a senior columnist for the Israeli daily Maariv. He has worked as both a print commentator and radio/television anchor during his distinguished three-decade career, focusing on politics, diplomacy, military affairs, and the peace process. Tal Schneider is a political correspondent for The Times of Israel and a former Washington correspondent for Maariv. In 2012, she won the Tel Aviv Journalists Association Award for Excellence in Digital Journalism. Ghaith al-Omari is a senior fellow at The Washington Institute and former executive director of the American Task Force on Palestine. He also served as an advisor to the negotiating team during the 1999-2001 permanent-status talks and held various positions within the Palestinian Authority. Ibrahim Dalalsha directs the Horizon Center for Political Studies and Media Outreach, a think tank based in Ramallah. Previously, he served as senior political advisor at the U.S. consulate-general in Jerusalem for two decades. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
