Does public opinion matter in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Do leaders pay attention to the changing views of their respective constituencies? Each situation presents unique challenges for analysts and scholars trying to answer these questions. And those challenges have grown exponentially more complicated in the wake of October 7, 2023, and the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.  How have Israeli and Palestinian attitudes evolved toward their leaders and the region, one another, the United States' role, and the war?  And how do Israelis and Palestinians on all sides of the divide imagine their  future, particularly whether there's a pathway out of the ongoing crisis and any prospects for ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?   Join Aaron David Miller as he engages in conversation with Dahlia Scheindlin, a political strategist and a public opinion researcher, and Khalil Shikaki, the director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, two analysts and pollsters of Israeli and Palestinian politics and public opinion, on these and other issues on the next Carnegie Connects.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Yesterday, Rettig Gur and Borschel-Dan attended a joint press conference for the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research and Tel Aviv University, where they heard the findings of the latest Palestine-Israel Pulse survey. They heard eye-opening perspectives of massive distrust in the other and how that influences any kind of vision of the future. They also learned that there is one sector -- Arab Israelis -- that is still optimistic and still thinks that peace can be achieved. The survey was conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) in Ramallah and the International Program in Conflict Resolution and Mediation at Tel Aviv University with funding from the Netherlands Representative Office in Ramallah and the Representative Office of Japan to Palestine through UNDP/PAPP. The lead authors were Dr. Dahlia Scheindlin, Dr. Khalil Shikaki and Dr. Nimrod Rosler. It polled 1200± Palestinians — over 800 from the West Bank and over 400 from Gaza in person — and 900 Israeli adults online, in the last half of July. Among other things, its findings addressed the impact of October 7 and the ongoing war on support for the two-state solution and support for various alternatives to the two-state solution, including one democratic state, one undemocratic state, a two-state confederation. We hear about attitudes toward the war and massive distrust of the other, extreme perceptions of the other and each side's sense of victimization. SD Worx, formerly Intelligo, a leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced the results of its latest research which reveals the high levels of financial stress being felt by employees in Ireland. It found that nearly half (44%) of employees in Ireland are experiencing financial stress, while a third (33%) do not believe that their organisation shows concern for their financial wellbeing or reducing this stress. The independent study was commissioned by SD Worx and carried out by iVOX among 1,000 employees in Ireland to gain insights into their financial concerns and wellbeing. As the cost of living continues to rise, 41% of those surveyed believe that their employer did not adequately compensate for inflation last year, while 44% said that they would like to be able to request a salary advance. Just 28% of workers feel like they have a significant influence in their salary negotiations. SD Worx, which has software solutions that can support dynamic salary adjustments, including inflation-based salary reviews, found that many employees in Ireland believe they are not adequately compensated. Some 27% say they are dissatisfied with their complete reward package, which includes their salary, bonus, and other fringe benefits such as health insurance. The same percentage are not satisfied with the monetary part of their package such as the base salary and bonus. Meanwhile, 29% reported that personal performance is not sufficiently rewarded within their workplace. The survey also suggests that financial stress among employees can have a major impact on businesses. Some 23% of employees say that they would leave a job if they were dissatisfied with their financial stability and job security. Eimear Byrne, Country Leader, SD Worx Ireland, said: "In the current economic climate, organisations must take into account the impact that adequate rewards packages have on employees' financial wellbeing. Our research shows that employees are grappling with rising costs and are concerned with their financial stability. When not reflected by proportionate salary increases, the increasing cost of living amplifies the stress and pressure that employees and their families are placed under. "It's crucial that employers take a step back and understand the influence that this stress can have on their employees, both inside and outside of work. Payroll shouldn't be a silo - payroll and HR are closely linked, and they must work together to ensure a happy and well-rounded workforce. SD Worx's integrated payroll and HR software can enable more efficient salary management to support cost of living adjustments, enhance employees' financial wellbeing through industry insights and benchmarking, and adjust rewards packages to more accurately reflect individual performance - providing a holistic approach to improving the employee experience." As peace efforts and proposed solutions abound, it is imperative that we listen to the voices of Palestinians themselves, whose aspirations and grievances have often been overshadowed or misrepresented. Matthew Petti from Reason shares that the latest polling data from the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research offers a rare glimpse into the sentiments and priorities of the Palestinian public, challenging preconceived notions in the news headlines. It is another example that we need to dig deeper and see past the personal agendas to look at the facts. As we do, we might just be able to pave the way for a more just and lasting resolution in the Middle East, one that genuinely addresses the hopes and concerns of all those affected by this enduring conflict.

In mid-December of 2023 the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (details here) polled over 1200 adults from the West Bank and Gaza during the time of the latest ceasefire. With a 4+- margin of error, the following are highlights of that poll. Those who are theologically dispensationalists (explanation here) will likely continue to support Israel and their right to both protect themselves and exist as a nation. For them, it is not a function of who is right and who is wrong in the conflict. It comes from a view of Scripture that God's chosen people will return to Him as Messianic Jews (here). However, for those who reject dispensationalism, covenant theology (here) offers a more pragmatic view of the conflict. Whichever is valid, or some combination of the two, the fact remains that this small piece of land, (85 miles by 290 miles), has seen continuous conflict for thousands of years and will likely be the center of the conflict that ends all conflicts.

Earlier this month, the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research released a poll of Palestinian attitudes—attitudes towards Israel, towards Hamas, towards the Palestinian Authority, about the Hamas attacks of October 7, about the conduct of the war since that time, and more. The findings are eye-opening. Asked if the October 7 attacks were the right thing to do, in light of all that's happened since, 72% of Palestinians think they were. A further 85% said that they have not seen the videos of the October 7 attacks, and the vast majority do not believe that Hamas committed the atrocities that the videos show. Meanwhile, 66% of Palestinian respondents do not support the idea of a two-state solution. Approximately the same number, 63% of Palestinian respondents, believes that armed struggle is the best means of achieving, in the words of the poll, “an end to the occupation and the building of an independent state.” Ghaith al-Omari is a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the former executive director of the American Task Force on Palestine, and served as an advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team during the 1999–2001 permanent-status talks (in addition to holding various other positions within the Palestinian Authority). Here, in conversation with Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver, he breaks down some of this data and offers historical and political context for it. In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D analyzes a poll from the 'Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research' which asked a wide sample of Palestinians their thoughts on the conflict in Gaza. The polling suggests that not only do an increasing number of Palestinians support armed resistance, but that they believe the militants can and will achieve victory. The polling also dispels Israeli narratives about Palestinians being anti-Semitic and desiring to push Israeli Jews in to the sea. Moving on, Double D goes over some points laid out by an 'Electronic Intifada' roundtable, which suggests that despite Israeli rhetoric, Palestinian militant groups are fighting steadily and continue to have resolve. Double D also rolls a clip depicting Palestinian guerilla fighters. Double D points out that such clips depict the absolute free range of motion militants still have despite the Israeli bombardment. He also notes that these videos serve as far superior propaganda in the war for hearts and minds as compared to Israeli's cartoonish PR campaign. Ending the video, Double D dissects why he believe Israel's war is untenable, and that their final defeat is inevitable.Don't forget to support our Independent Media work on Patreon for only $1 a month!patreon.com/entitledmillennialsOne-time donations through PayPal are GREATLY appreciated!paypal.me/entitledmillennials

The Israel-Hamas war has pushed the Palestinian issue to center stage both in the region and internationally. Have Hamas's October 7 attack, Israel's blockade and airstrikes, and the ensuing humanitarian catastrophe altered Gazans' views on Hamas? What did Hamas hope to gain from the attack? Has the Palestinian Authority been weakened further by the escalating violence in the areas under its control, and would its influence be strengthened or weakened if Israel were to succeed in destroying Hamas's military capabilities? Are there any circumstances in which the Palestinian Authority might return to Gaza?Aaron David Miller sits down with pollster and analyst Khalil Shikaki, director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, in conversation on these and other issues.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveIn a charged and often emotional conversation, and welcome Robert Nicholson, the president of the Philos Project, to discuss the pro-Israel perspective as the war in Gaza intensifies. Many Israeli voices have veered sharply to the right. However much we may disagree with these views, we have to understand them. Robert, a Christian and self-described Zionist, expresses empathy for the Israeli perception of an existential threat next door. Hamas' attacks have undermined, perhaps fatally, any hope that Israelis might have had that peaceful co-existence is possible not just with Palestinians but with Arabs more broadly. The three consider alternative scenarios, including a reoccupation of Gaza or a policy of complete and total separation. In the United States, meanwhile, Arab Americans are reacting with despair at President Biden's stalwart support of Israel. Shadi finds himself in the unenviable position of writing a book subtitled “The Case for American Dominance.” If this is what American dominance looks like, Shadi wonders, can he really support it? And how is he supposed to make the case to Arabs and Muslims that America is, on balance, a force for good? In the full episode (for paying subscribers only), Shadi, Damir and Robert delve into tricky territory, debating whether “Islamic exceptionalism” makes it difficult for Muslims to ever really accept a U.S.-led order and to ever accept a world in which Israel is as powerful as it is. Were the religious passions that are now being unleashed across the Arab world inevitable—or could they have been tamed and contained by democracy? Damir and Robert argue that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict isn't really about Israel or Palestine but is a proxy for a deeper set of religious, cultural, and civilizational fault lines. In this sense, there may be no way out and no room for compromise. And Arabs and Muslims—as well as much of the Global South—may feel compelled to choose between two drastically different visions of world order: one led by the United States and the other led by America's growing list of adversaries. There is, as they say, no alternative. Recently on the The Deep Map podcast, Robert Nicholson, founder of the Philos Project, a Christian Middle East advocacy group, said that he finds it “amazing” that “the people who claim to love Palestinians don't know anything about them, and they're not even trying to learn.”   In the interview, Nicholson emphasized findings of The Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. For example, over two-thirds of Palestinians reject a two-state solution. Ninety-three percent of Palestinians reject Israel's claim to the land, while 58% support armed confrontation. Even more shocking is that two-thirds (67%) of the residents of the Gaza strip support armed attacks on Israeli civilians.   Along with the capacity of fallen humans to do evil, there is also the power of cultural ideology. Radical Islamic ideology, such as is held by Hamas, has shaped that region for a long time. Westerners shaped by secularism tend to think of religion as personal and private, which makes the terror carried out in Israel even harder to understand.

In this episode, we discuss what cities can do - and are already doing - to combat climate change, while also considering how cities can communicate these policies. Communication means exchanging and listening to ideas; and in the climate context, to fight back against the propaganda of the fossil fuel industry, far-right political movements and online conspiracy theorists. Mayors and governments need to think about how they communicate with their constituents about their plans for phasing out fossil fuels and the path towards a healthier climate - especially our youth leaders, who deserve a seat at the table today to help shape the world they will inherit tomorrow. Another mass shooting with an AR-15 armed shooter brings more thoughts and prayers from NRA-owned politicians … and that's about all. In Washington. While Republicans in the U.S. House focus on protecting kids from drag queens and classic books … instead of protecting them from being shot in their classrooms … Michigan's Legislature continues to do just the opposite. Gun safety is the latest issue to move from campaign promises all the way to the Governor's desk. Also enacted in this hyper-active legislative session: returning union rights to workers and civil rights for all Michiganders regardless of sexual identity or orientation. Joining the discussion this week is Democratic Party pollster Celinda Lake with insights on how Democrats can leverage the MAGA takeover of the Republican Party and reclaim the allegiance of Midwest blue-collar voters. Celinda is one of the Democratic Party's leading political strategists. She was one of two lead pollsters for the Biden campaign in 2020 and continues to serve as a pollster to the Democratic National Committee (DNC), other national party committees, and dozens of Democratic incumbents and challengers at all levels of the electoral process. Celinda and her firm, Lake Research Partners, are known for cutting-edge research on issues including the economy, health care, the environment, and education. Celinda, a native of Montana—born and raised on a ranch—and one of the political world's most avid whitewater rafters, holds a master's degree in Political Science and Survey Research from the University of Michigan and her undergraduate degree from Smith College in Massachusetts, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She is co-author of a must-read book on political strategy, “A Question of Respect.” Celinda teamed up with Republican pollster Ed Goeas to provide a political resource and a compelling case for how the nation reached a moment of massive political divisions, where it needs to go, and what it will take to get there. She also led research on behalf of American Family Values of how the Democrats' brand in the Midwest is damaged in blue-collar counties. Uncertainty sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine has already pushed up the price of gasoline. Russia and Ukraine are major wheat and corn growers, and their conflict will raise prices at the grocery stores, said Charles Ballard, MSU economist and a member of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) podcast team.“There's already been an effect,” he said during the podcast recording. “I don't think that will be enormous.” With war-strangled supply disruptions and shortages, along with rising demand powered by economic stimulus checks, extra unemployment benefits, consumers are likely to find goods and services in short supply or delayed, Ballard said. This month's IPPSR State of the State Podcast features IPPSR Director Dr. Matt Grossmann and IPPSR Associate Director Arnold Weinfeld.Other highlights from the monthly internet broadcast produced in partnership by IPPSR, a campus center for policy education, political leadership development and survey research, and WKAR Radio:·       Inflation, up 5.2% in January and the biggest annual gain since 1983, is likely to make a “negative dent” in President Biden's approval, Grossmann said. How large a dent depends on inflation's duration, how long inflation stays in the news and how strong public perceptions are in the wake of rising prices.·       Retirees' effect on the economy looks under the public radar, Ballard observed. In the past 20 years, Baby Boomers, the generation of people born from 1946 to 1964, have hit retirement years. In the past months, workers wrung out by the pandemic have left jobs. “That contributes to the supply disruptions,” he said. “It contributes to higher prices.”·       IPPSR's latest State of the State Survey (SOSS) shows an especially sour Michigan view of inflation and politicians. The latest survey, in December 2021, found that 70 percent of those responding to the survey expect the rate of inflation to rise; only 11 percent expect decline. In the 2020 survey, some 48 percent of SOSS respondents expected inflation's uptick, 12 percent foresaw downturn. “As we know, perception is everything,” Weinfeld commented.·       Rising gasoline prices is a particular distaste, Grossmann said. “Voters notice those gas prices. “Voters take note and react negatively. Voters don't like it.” Historically, rising gasoline prices are related to declining voter favor not only for the president, but also for election losses for the president's political party.·       Even Biden's Build Back Better initiative, addressing infrastructure and now before the U.S. Congress, came in for doubt in the State of the State Survey. When interviewers asked about Biden's Build Back Better plan, it was opposed 47 percent-30 percent, Grossmann said. When the plan's components were explained, it gained majority support from SOSS respondents.·       In statewide politics, Michigan still favors Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the state's 2022 gubernatorial race and Democrats in congressional voting, Grossmann said. However, races should narrow as November draws nearer, he cautioned.·       Tax cuts are on the table in Michigan's Legislature with budget surpluses, due primarily to federal economic stimulus, giving rise to proposals to cut taxes for individuals, corporations, retirees with pensions and certain 401(k) investments. ·       Resources are available now to pay down long-term debt, cut taxes and increase benefits, Grossmann said. During times of strong resources, decisionmakers can make changes “we then regret a few years later,” he added. Strong resources now don't mean “good times are here for good.”The Institute for Public Policy and Social Research is a part of the College of Social Science at Michigan State University. In the first State of the State Podcast of the new year, podcasters from Michigan State University's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research talk taxes, the economy, the elections near term, mid-term and long-term.Highlights:·      Institute Director Dr. Matt Grossmann: New surveys show Michigan's public and policy insiders believe Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will win re-election in November 2022's vote. National trends and election history predict the in-power party – the Democrats – are likely to lose to Republicans in off-presidential year elections. “The mood of the state is relatively sour” in survey results, but Whitmer was upbeat in her State of the State speech. “She said the word ‘bipartisan' three or four times. Nonetheless, “she still is vulnerable.”·      Associate Institute Director Arnold Weinfeld, host of the IPPSR Podcast, navigated the conversation through Whitmer's upcoming budget message, new General Motors Corp. investments in Michigan, the choice between short-term tax cuts and investment in long-term state needs, long-term concerns about the viral pandemic COVID-19.·      IPPSR Podcast Guest Simon Schuster, former IPPSR Graduate Fellow and now executive director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, outlined a general lack of transparency in campaign finance regulations in Michigan, especially compared to other states.·      Emeritus MSU Economics Professor Charles Ballard noted Whitmer State of the State speech call for more mental health funding, especially for K-12 pupils. He questioned Whitmer's call to repeal the “pension” tax, primarily on retirees. Affluent retirees still pay fewer taxes than those still in the workforce. He issued a strong call for efforts everywhere to reduce the spread and threat of COVID-19 and its variants. “If you haven't been vaccinated, please do so. It might save your life and the life of your loved ones.”The Institute for Public Policy and Social Research is a part of the College of Social Science at Michigan State University.
