Based on William Peter Blatty's novel, which itself was inspired by a real-life exorcism of a 13-year-old boy in Maryland, the film shocked audiences with its visceral depiction of demonic possession and spiritual warfare. But what happened behind the scenes was arguably even more chilling. Lisa Cannon tells us all about this Halloween horror.

In 1949, 13-year-old 'Roland Doe' became the victim of alleged demonic possession which lead to a harrowing series of exorcisms by a team of catholic priests. Roland's exorcism became the chilling real-life inspiration for famous horror film, The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty.

Sitting in the Bel-Nor neighborhood of St.Louis, Missouri is a house with a dark history. In March 2017 Lacy J Dalton was inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame, and in 2022 she was awarded a Lifetime Career Achievement Award from the Josie Music Awards, the largest independent music awards show in the country.   She's one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music – the woman People Magazine called “Country's Bonnie Raitt.” From the first time Lacy J Dalton caught the public's ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, has been a mainstay of Country Music. When you sit to listen to a Lacy J Dalton album, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she's not merely performing a ten-song set, she's bringing each and every tune to life. It's as if they were all written especially for her.   Prior to recording with Harbor Records in 1978 as Jill Croston, she like many before her, held many jobs to survive and support her family. As a truck stop waitress and singer, she would wait tables and then take the stage to sing a few songs. In June 1979, Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with Crazy Blue Eyes, which she wrote with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, and which raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts.  Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist of the Year.   Lacy's success was powered not just by the artist's recordings, but by a stage show that truly electrified audiences. In the winter of 1973, director William Friedkin released his iconic horror classic The Exorcist, a film that has shocked and terrified audiences for more than fifty years. Based on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name, The Exorcist tells the story of a young girl who becomes possessed by a demonic entity, and the two Catholic priests who attempt to exorcise the demon. Even more terrifying than the content of the film, however, was the fact that The Exorcist was supposedly based on a true story. William Peter Blatty had always stated The Exorcist was based on a supposedly true story he'd heard while at Georgetown University. According to Blatty, a Maryland boy, known as “Roland Doe,” had become possessed by a demonic entity and, among other things, underwent a negative personality change and began exhibiting impossible abilities including an ability to speak Latin. It was only through the dedication of one Jesuit priest that the boy was eventually freed of his possession and went on to live a normal life.Since the release of both the novel and the film in the 1970s, a great deal more has been learned about “Roland Doe” and the supposedly true story that inspired The Exorcist, raising many questions about the veracity of the original claims. This week's MK3D was the 100th edition and this special milestone show featured a fabulous and diverse array of conversations about film culture: some great friends of the show who have graced the stage before, and some new filmmaking talent. At the top of the show the CEO of the BFI Ben Roberts leaped onto the stage to congratulate everyone involved on being the longest running and most successful strand at the BFI, ever.First up Mark welcomes Samantha Morton on stage to talk about her work as an actress, director, writer and musician. Sam talks about her directorial feature The Unloved, as well as her role in She Said, and the changes needed in the film industry. Next, Alan Jones joins Mark to talk about his new book Discomania, a glorious celebration of Disco, Punk, and Alan's unique, trail-blazing career in the Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy film arenas.
