Eric and Wendy are joined by Michelle Martinez, Wendy's grad school classmate and BFF, to discuss her favorite parts of “Nestor.” Michelle is a current poetry indexer and permissions coordinator for a large poetry organization, recovering academic, and chicana feminist crockpot fiend with a Ph.D. in English lit. A guest was necessary, since, until the recording, Eric and Wendy thought “Nestor” was … fine, but maybe feel differently by the end? Highlights of the conversation include Michelle's four-month-old's timely appearance as we discuss “amor matris,” discussion of Deasy's QAnon resonance, debate over what it means that God is a shout in the street, and, finally, the pod's casting of the perfect Ulysses movie Deasy. Cask Ales and camaraderie in Athens, GA A lot has changed in craft beer in the last 25 years, and Classic City Brew Fest has been there through it all. Organizer Owen Ogletree tells us about the changes over the years and the great cause the fest supports. We've been attending this event for several years now. We always grab a few of the brewers and chat a bit about what's happening with their brewery. This year we sat down with Carey Charles from Arches Brewing for some hot lager talk. Arches is one of the first breweries in Georgia to take the bold step of being lager-focused, and they're doing a damn fine job of it. Nick Tanner and Ramsay Florence from Cherry Street Brewing join to talk about Nick's two brewpubs, crazy beer laws, and why that helped them make the choice to open a production brewery across state lines in Chattanooga, TN. Note: Chery Street's Halcyon location has some of the best fish and chips I've tried. I want some more right now. Speaking of crazy beer laws... Joseph Cortes, Executive Director of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, joins us as well. He was new to craft beer when he took on his role, but not new to politics. Cortes shares that the political side of beer is a crazy place to be. We learn about some of the challenges facing brewers and what's on the agenda for the Guild. The beer scouts return to the Upstate to feature Jocassee Valley Brewing Company, one of the newest breweries in South Carolina, and for the moment, the only operating brewery in Oconee County! Jocassee Valley (also known as “JVBC” for short) just opened their taproom doors for business in May 2018, and offers an impressive selection of delicious craft beer paired with live music and tasty food trucks, all at a family-friendly venue in the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As a bonus, Eric also picked up some cans of an outstanding amber lager from Arches Brewing, a lager-centric microbrewery from the south side of Atlanta. Along with discussing the virtues of half-pints and craft-brewed kombucha, Justin also gives us a lesson on the chemistry behind prison hooch (which for the record was not acquired through personal experience). It takes some courage to open up a craft brewery focusing mainly on lagers. After all, lagers require a little more love...time...and temperature control before they're ready to serve. And for the most part, craft beer drinkers are mainly an ale-centric bunch. But for the men behind Hapeville's Arches Brewing, craft lagers are a way to showcase their brewing skills. Ryan Fogelgren and Jamey Adams joined us in the studios this week. Specializing in crisp, clean-drinking (mainly) German-style beers, the crew behind Arches have gained a good following in the community, and have even gained fans at the nearby Porsche headquarters. We talked about their start in the brewing business, their growth, and the future. A little history for you this week. Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle are with us today. Not only are they craft beer fans, they are the authors of “Atlanta Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the South” as well as “Prohibition in Atlanta: Temperance, Tiger Kings and White Lightning.” Atlanta and the south have had a love/hate relationship with alcohol over the past 250 or so years. From the Whitehall Tavern opening on the West End in 1835 (back when Atlanta was called Terminus), to the mayoral election of Moses Frumwalt (of the awesomely named "Free and Rowdy" party) over Jonathan Norcross (of the "Moral Party), the early years of the region were quite...interesting. Then, with the Civil War, reconstruction, and the abolitionist movement, the region underwent many, many changes. The opening of Atlantic Brewing in 1935 (it was located on the current site of the downtown Hilton) marked a turn in Atlanta's brewing history. After its closing in the 50s, Atlanta's only brewery was a branch of Canadian beer maker Carling (now made by Molson/Coors). And when it closed in 1973, Atlanta went nearly 4 decades without a brewery until Atlanta Brewing Company (now Red Brick) opened its doors in 1993. We really needed 3 hours to get in-depth with this topic, and we definitely plan on having Mary and Ron on the show in the future. In the meantime, we highly recommend picking up their two books: “Atlanta Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the South" “Prohibition in Atlanta: Temperance, Tiger Kings and White Lightning” Truck and Tap's Beers of the week: In keeping with the historical theme, we went with a couple from the vault, including: Red Brick 20th anniversary (2013) SweetWater 17th anniversary (2014) Terrapin Tiramisu Hoo (2015) And a newer one, Monday Night Brewing Blood Orange Blind Pirate IPA Headlines (sponsored by Your Pie Perimeter) Damien Schaefer, a stalwart in Georgia's craft beer scene, has passed away.
