This week on the Cut to the Race Podcast, host Oli and his panel of Abby, Sam and James M tackle the first half of the 2022 season review. In this episode, it's the bottom seven teams from Constructors' Championship and their drivers. Who exceeded expectations, who failed to deliver, and what can we expect from their respective 2023s? Quiz '22 This week's quiz is all things 2022. How closely was the panel paying attention this season, as they try to count everything from drivers to retirements and list the calendar in order?  The battle for P4 An intense fight between the two was somewhat overshadowed by internal dysfunction. McLaren started terribly, but quickly recovered. Well, half their line-up did, at least… Alpine were quick from the get-go, but were plagued by poor reliability. Well, half their line-up was, at least… Personnel changes for next season will see shifts in team dynamic, but will they continue their fight for best of the rest? A tale of two teams Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin had divergent seasons yet converged at 55 points apiece. Alfa took a step forward, whilst Aston took a step back. Valtteri Bottas was a revelation Alfa, but how did his rookie teammate fare? A surprisingly slow start for Aston made way for a resurgent Sebastian Vettel, who provided his own summer surprise. Did Haas flatter to deceive? After an abysmal 2021 season, the only way was up for Haas. With Nikita Mazepin sacked during the off-season, Kevin Magnussen shocked and delighted in equal measure with P5 on his return to F1 at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Exciting early season form eventually tailed off, but Mick Schumacher remained costly for the team. KMAG dovetailed the campaign with feel good performances, whilst Schumacher peaked mid-year. That wasn't enough to save him, as Magnussen's old foe replaces Mick for 2023. Falls from grace Perhaps the teams most disappointed with 2022 will be AlphaTauri and Williams – though admittedly, that's to be expected as they finished P9 and P10. AlphaTauri ran Haas close, but Pierre Gasly was unable to extract as much from the car as he did in previous years. Yuki Tsunoda took a step forward, or so it seemed, but struggled after securing his future for 2023, when Gasly will enjoy pastures new. Can his replacement, Nyck de Vries, deliver on the promise of his Monza cameo? Williams might have provided that opportunity to De Vries, but it's Logan Sargeant who has benefitted from a changing of the guard there. He replaces Nicholas Latifi, whose season never really got going. He partners Alex Albon, who was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating season that saw Williams fall back to the foot of the standings. -- Keep up to date with all the latest Formula 1 News @ www.formulanerds.com -- Follow Us: Facebook - www.Facebook.com/FormulaNerds Twitter - www.twitter.com/Formula_Nerds Instagram www.instagram.com/FormulaNerds -- For Advertising & Sponsorship Opportunities:- Email Business@FormulaNerds.com Learn more about your ad choices. It's Brazil. It's always Brazil when the shit hits the fan. And of course, this year was no exception. George Russell completely dominated the 2nd half of the weekend after crashing and parking his Mercedes in qualifying. No, seriously. Of course he took full advantage of the Sprint, to take down a surprisingly curtailed Max Verstappen who had to start on the medium tyre, the only man to do so. But George was untouchable in the race itself, only a late Safety Car giving Lewis Hamilton any sort of chance at the W. Speaking of, Red Bull just can't help themselves. Two major incidents involving their team. The first, another chapter in the book of Max vs Lewis, with Max trying to pass Lewis on the outside of Turn 1... only for them to collide at Turn 2 putting Max down the back with a 5-second time penalty to boot. Who's fault? Bad stewarding again? We discuss it. But the real gem here is Max Verstappen refusing to give Sergio Perez 6th place back on a team orders call... just because he could. And of course, if there's one thing mostly everyone in F1 hates, it's a team orders call. And of course, the drama and spill over since then. Note: We recorded this before Red Bull's... lying apology, but the sentiment still rings true about how silly this can be, and the warped power dynamics behind team orders in F1. ...Oh, and did we mention Kevin Magnussen qualified on pole? Because Kevin Magnussen qualified on pole! Alpine came back from a literal meltdown and may have 4th wrapped up! All that and more on a heaped Motorsport101!

We'll be honest, the F1 season has dragged on a bit in 2021. But the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend was a cracker, with action and excitement across the board. Kevin Magnussen got his first pole. George Russell got his first win, and then another one straight afterwards. But all everyone is talking about is how much of a colossal bellend Max Verstappen is. Cheeka, Phill and Terry spend most of an hour doing exactly that, and then Terry gives all the teams human names. ENJOY! On this week's episode we have two timely topics to dig into. Firstly, host Edd Straw and former F1 technical director Gary Anderson discuss how Mercedes have been able to turn a car that started the season as a bouncing, porpoising nightmare into a Grand Prix winner. They also ask what the Silver Arrows' Brazilian GP victory means for them being able to give Red Bull a run for their money in 2023. Secondly, Gary chats to Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, just a day after the team took a very popular - and very unexpected - pole position with Kevin Magnussen in Brazil. An engineer by trade, who once served as both a mechanic in rallying and as technical operations lead for Red Bull Racing, Gary asks Guenther about the benefits of being a technically minded team boss - and about the potential pitfalls. And finally, Gary answers another listener's burning tech question, which this week is about the single decision which contributed to Mercedes' 2022 struggles. Want to ask us a question? Phil and Josh return for E144 of the GSP to discuss George Russell's first career Formula 1 victory at the Sao Paulo/Brazilian Grand Prix.  The guys get into the feature and sprint races along with the qualifying, which saw Kevin Magnussen qualify on pole for Haas F1.  Controversy reigned with current double world champion Max Verstappen getting into it with Sir Lewis Hamilton yet again along with ignoring a team directive to move over for teammate Sergio Perez in his battle for 2nd in the driver's championship. Hamilton finished second to provide Mercedes their first 1-2 of the 2022 season with Carlos Sainz finishing third after taking an engine penalty.  Sainz teammate Charles Leclerc and Perez are tied with one race to go while Ferrari holds a 19 point lead over Mercedes heading to Abu Dhabi.  Other aggressive issues took place with the Alpine teammates while Nico Hulkenberg is returning to drive for Haas in 2023. Phil and Josh then got into a discussion about who they would add to the Top 50 drivers in NASCAR history with the 75th year celebration starting in 2023.  Some interesting choices were covered by both before Phil got into the GSP Roundup reviewing NHRA's finale at Pomona, WEC at Bahrain, WSBK in Indonesia last week and Phillip Island this week, WRC Rally Japan and a preview of the F2 finale at Abu Dhabi.   The NFL discussion gets into Josh and Phil's actual teams and fantasy teams before they previewed and made picks for the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix along with giving their thoughts at the end of Sebastian Vettel's legendary career.  Josh does his Sim Segment before the Show Close.

We deep dived into the fall out from Max Verstappen refusing to let his teammate through despite team orders, his collision with Sir Lewis Hamilton and reflected on the cost cap scandal. We also spoke at length about an incredible first win for George Russell and Mercedes' strong development this year. The Mercedes car is truly indestructible. We reflected on the career and character arcs of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo who may be racing for the last time in F1 next week at Abu Dhabi. Finally we had thoughts on the rumours of Mattia Binnoto's role as team principle at Ferrari being under threat and we have the return of Kevin Magnussen appreciation corner as the Dane scored his and Haas' first ever pole position. Digressions include Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspurs, who Eni supports, whether Mercedes should have a junior team talent management in F1, Toto Wolff learning from mistakes and when Niki Lauda tried to sign Verstappen for Mercedes. Eni is extremely considered and funny and presented Langa with a number of ideas that gave him food for thought. The Brazilian F1 Weekend was filled with as much drama, intrigue and exciting race storylines that we wish the Formula 1 grid raced here every other week.  Alex Kirry and Dan Jimenez talk about the insane storylines between Kevin Magnussen getting his first and Haas F1 Team's first poll position and Mercedes AMG off a 1-2 with George Russell cashing in on his first Formula One race win ever.  But one of the more interesting storylines is the apparent infighting between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at Red Bull where Verstappen defied team orders and shut out his teammate from extra points in that championship race.  We can't get enough of the drama.  MODE PUSH, BABY! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why, Max Verstappen, why? The two-time World Champion let go of the 'cheapest' way to secure Sergio Perez's loyalty at the 2022 Sao Paulo GP or the 2022 Brazilian GP (whatever you want to call it!). And then of course, we had a Verstappen vs. Lewis Hamilton on-track, that cost both teams a bit of body work. Fernando Alonso's fightback, Ferrari's inters for Charles Leclerc and refusal to swap places with Carlos Sainz, the team-mate battles, Yuki Tsunoda being 'forgotten' by Race Control, Lando Norris' illness, Mclaren's double DNF, Kevin Magnussen's pole and more. Welcome to this week's episode of the Lovecars On The Grid Podcast! Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman are here to bring us another roundup of motorsport events from the past week. We've had an exciting weekend, with Formula 1, World Endurance Championships, WRC and British Superbikes! But first, we pay our respects to Simon Arron, a motorsport journalist who sadly passed away last week. Formula 1 was in Sao Paolo, Brazil this week, with a fantastic story for Mercedes driver and Winner, George Russell who took his first Grand Prix Win this weekend. The weekend was full of firsts as Haas driver, Kevin Magnussen took pole position in qualifying. We had many controversies during the race too. Starting with the incident between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen during the race restart. Who was at fault? We had controversy between Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso. The Alpine team told Ocon to allow Alonso to overtake as Alonso was on fresher tyres. Ocon refused to do so as he was trying to overtake Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin. Let's not forget the Red Bull team incident, where Verstappen wouldn't allow Perez past despite another team order! We have the final race of 2022 coming up in Abu Dhabi. It's already clear who the Winner of the driver's championship is, but who will come 2nd? Tiff finally spills the beans where he was filming last week, as he was filming an item with BBC's Top Gear, with Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness and Freddy Flintoff! The final round of the World Endurance Championship took place in Bahrain this weekend. The Championship concluded with a final Toyota 1-2 win, with Alpine behind them in 3rd, just 2 laps behind the leaders. We had a dramatic rally in Japan for WRC, with a win for Hyundai on the tarmac with Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe. Indonesia saw the penultimate round of the World Superbikes. Alvaro Bautista took three wins and the overall Championship win with a round to spare, with Turkish rider, Toprak Razgatlioglu taking 2nd and British rider, Jonathan Rea in 3rd place. Next weekend, we have the Phillip Island round of the World Superbikes, plus the final round of Formula 1 in Abu Dhabi.

O dia chegou.

Another complicated week in the F1 circus as the sport headed to North America and the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. And we even got a special guest, Ryan Erik King from Jalopnik is here for the next two episodes! Max Verstappen made more history with his 13th win of 2022 making him just the third man ever with a 13 in a year. But he had to earn it after a botched 11-second final pitstop meant he had to chase down Charles Leclerc and a surprising Lewis Hamilton threat, in what turned out to be quite possibly F1's race of the year. We break down a thriller of a US race. And within that, we also had a frightening crash. A 185mph clash between Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso the future teammates as Stroll turning into Alonso, nearly put the Spainard into the catchfence. Amazingly, Alonso was able to keep the car going despite being airborne (Marcus Ericsson, anyone?), and finish in 7th... until a post-race controversy regarding the lack of a meatball flag led to a protest from Haas. Again, the boys take a look at whether Stroll was in the wrong and whether Alonso should have been punished. We also talk about the diffcult to handle news out of Red Bull that their own Dietrich Mateschitz passed away at the age of 78. He was responsible for so much of the funding and investment that's made modern day F1 what it is. But he's also made some horrific comments about the world at large with his platforms. Should you mourn someone like that? M101 debates it. All that and more on Sebastian Vettel's epic final lap fight with Kevin Magnussen, on a loaded Motorsport101!

His time in F1 was brief and ‘brutal', but he learned lessons he's passing on to his son. Jan Magnussen, father of Haas driver Kevin, arrived in Formula 1 in the mid-1990s feeling unbeatable. His confidence came from a stunning championship-winning season in British Formula 3, in which he broke records set by the great Ayrton Senna. F1 broke that confidence. ‘I don't think I understood the enormity of the task' Jan tells Tom Clarkson as he honestly looks back on a difficult time with McLaren and Stewart Grand Prix. Did the early success which launched him into F1 have a downside? Did a ‘driving lesson' from triple World Champion team boss Jackie Stewart do more harm than good? Jan remembers his sudden F1 exit, and how he rediscovered his love of racing. Today, he shares that love and the wisdom of his experience with Kevin as his father, sportscar teammate and mentor.
