Baku baby! Azerbaijan delivers another excellent race on the streets of The City of Fire. Was it best race of the season? DAD and I get into the nitty-gritty and give you our take on what went down on the streets of Baku. Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy
The Baku City Circuit is known for its long straight and narrow castle turns. That's why success here is a testament to a driver's quickness and daring. It's why in the lead up to the main event we saw Charles Leclrec, who many consider the quickest driver over a single lap grab pole, giving the Tifosi a golden opportunity to double their successes in as many weeks. But hold your horses because instead we were treated to a commanding performance by McLarens “second” driver. Oscar Piastri showed up big. And when coupled with Lando Norris' great recovery drive, helping the team secure the top spot in the constructor's championship. A position they haven't sniffed in years Take a listen as we dive deep into the suspenseful race that was the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Sean Barie and Nick Shook recap Week 2 in the NFL, including some stunning early trends (looking at you, Derek Carr), dive into the benching of Bryce Young and debate whether the Eagles made the right call on third-and-3 in their eventual loss to the Falcons. The two shift gears to F1 to recap an engrossing Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Oscar Piastri took a sledgehammer to the Papaya Rules with his excellent drive to the top of the podium. Was Carlos Sainz or Sergio Perez responsible for their penultimate lap crash? And is Lando Norris really going to close in on Max Verstappen this season?
Round 17 of the 2024 F1 World Championship had the sport head back to the streets of Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. And despite Charles Leclerc's early breakaway, it was Oscar Piastri who stunned the Monegasque driver with a brilliant pass into Turn 1 and then held off Leclerc's attacks to take his second career victory. Ben Hunt and Filip Cleeren join Bryn Lucas on this edition of the Autosport Podcast to discuss the epic battle for the win and the difficulty that Piastri's victory places on McLaren's driver management after their soft commitment to team orders for the rest of the season. Is it too quick for a U-turn now that Piastri's just 32 points behind Lando Norris in the standings? There's also a deep dive into the penultimate lap crash between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz and whether either driver could have done more to avoid the incident, the strong rookie drives of Franco Colapinto and Ollie Bearman, and how Red Bull's new floor upgrade will fair with their Singapore struggles of 2023 still fresh in the memory as F1 heads back there this weekend. It's almost time for Round 17 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship as the sport heads back to the streets of Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Joining Steph Wentworth on the Autosport Podcast is Stuart Codling and Haydn Cobb and together they discuss the big (Non-Newey) stories heading into the weekend. After Monza, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella gave the media his biggest hint yet that the team may start favouring Lando Norris in pursuit of both major titles. Will we see that in Baku? Charles Leclerc has always gone well at the track, with three straight pole-positons, but has played down his chances of back-to-back wins. Is he bluffing? There's also more on whether Red Bull can figure out the balance issues on their troublesome RB20, the return of Ollie Bearman and what to expect from his 2nd F1 start, and the latest on whether Alpine will drop their engine department and become a customer team for 2025. After more than 30 years in Formula 1, winning an unprecedented 25 World Championships with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, legendary designer Adrian Newey has signed a multi-year deal with Aston Martin to become their managing technical partner and a shareholder in the company. He'll start work with the team in March 2025. Why has Newey chosen Aston instead of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton? What will he bring to Lawrence Stroll's team? Do they have everything Newey needs to be successful? How will he work with Fernando Alonso? And is this the signing that will turn Aston Martin into World Champions? Tom Clarkson asks Aston ambassador Pedro de la Rosa all the key questions about a huge moment in the team's history, before discussing the other big talking points ahead of this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. *** GO INSIDE THE MIND OF ADRIAN NEWEY, ONE OF F1'S GREATEST DESIGNERS Hear Adrian Newey talk you through his thought-processes when designing Formula 1 cars, how his passion for engineering began and why he's had so much success on F1 Beyond The Grid with Tom Clarkson.

Legendary Formula 1 engineer & designer Adrian Newey will team up with Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll and several other star engineers at Aston Martin F1 Team from 2025 onward. Will it be yet another winning combination for Newey? A mega coupe by Canadian billionaire, Lawrence Stroll. Also, it's "race week" for Baku, the venue of the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The "City of Winds" has always entertained, given it's unique track layout, but for once, no one knows for sure who could win this weekend. Will Ferrari-McLaren lead Mercedes-Red Bull Racing OR would a team have pulled away that slight bit to have an advantage this weekend? Historically, this race has seen interruptions, but Formula 1 has also gone 7 races without a Safety Car! In this episode of the Inside Line F1 Podcast, Soumil Arora and Kunal Shah preview the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Oliver Bearman stepping in for Kevin Magnussen, McLaren's team orders saga and of course, if Lando Norris can get two things right. First, the start and opening lap, and second, taking a BIG chunk of points off Max Verstappen's 62 points lead. Also, for the first time in 2024 (possibly), we have 8 drivers who could genuinely be in the fight for the lead! Sergio Perez is the "King of Baku" as the only driver to score multiple wins AND most podiums. In only 7 years, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has etched a special place in the hearts of Formula 1 fans. Let's see how they all go this weekend. Tune in! (Season 2024, Episode 46) Follow our hosts on Twitter: Soumil Arora, @f1statsguru and Kunal Shah Image courtesy: Aston Martin F1 Team
This week On the Gravel was a dip between last week's Italian Grand Prix and our trip to Baku next week for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. In and around the paddock, the final episode of The Grand Tour airs this Friday, Mattia Binotto believes youth may be the answer for the final Audi seat, and Adrian Newey's move to AMR is being further confirmed this week. One more conversation on the flex wings used by McLaren and Mercedes, a staffing shake up at Ferrari, and Red Bull sacrificing next year's car to fix its current issues finished up our news portion. New this week was a segment centered around memorable moments, a rookie spotlight, and race predictions for the week's upcoming circuit. The week ended with recaps of EKO Acropolis Rally Greece (WRC), Lone Star Le Mans (WEC), and Formula Drift Utah to carry us over to next week at Baku. See you there!
As we still await the Adrian Newey news... Join Haydon and James as they discuss Ollie Bearman's move to HAAS for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Which F1 driver would do best at the Chelsea Flower Show and a legend of F1 safety that we believe isn't as well known as he should be!
